Molecular Insights Into the Barrier and Reinforcement Mechanisms of HNBR/SWCNT Composites: A Combined Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Study

Ke Yang,Longjun Cheng,Hongxing Zhang,Chao Yu,Qionghai Chen,Qingli Cheng

To develop high-performance sealing materials for harsh high-temperature and high-pressure oil-gas environments in tank breather valves, this study incorporated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR). The systematic investigation of SWCNT content (0–2 phr) revealed that at a critical 2 phr loading, SWCNTs can significantly accelerate vulcanization (t90 reduced by 12.6%), enhancing crosslink density (17.7%) and modulus (141%), while reducing gas permeability by over 50% and suppressing oil-swelling (18%) and thermal-oxidative aging (99.4% tear strength retention). Molecular dynamics simulations elucidated the mechanism: strong interfacial interaction (~128 eV) restricts polymer chain motion (MSD reduced 36%), fundamentally inhibiting molecular diffusion (oil diffusion coefficient reduced > 60%). This work provides critical formulation and theoretical guidance for designing extreme-environment rubber seals. Highlights SWCNT enhances mechanical properties and reduces gas permeability of rubber. SWCNT suppresses oil swelling and aging for ensuring long-term seal stability. SWCNT-HNBR interactions restrict polymer-chain mobility and entanglements.

Highly Sensitive Electrochemical Sensor Based on PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode Enables Trace Analysis Shikonin

Jingdang Chai,Jie Zhang,Yangping Wen,Lie Zou,Xinxin Zhang,Xing Xin,Muhan Zhou,Jingkun Xu,Ge Zhang

An electrochemical sensor based on PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH/GCE for highly sensitive analysis of shikonin (SHI) in PBS buffer solution was reported. PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH composite was obtained by using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) and carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT-COOH) to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies. In optimized conditions, PEDOT:PSS-β-CD-SWCNT-COOH had a high sensitivity to SHI and it could detect SHI in linear ranges 6 nM to 30 μM with a low detection limit of 1.8 nM. And a series of experiments showed that the modified electrode exhibited good repeatability, reproducibility, and selectivity to electrochemical determination of SHI.

Allyl sulfide-based visible light-induced dynamically reshaped liquid crystalline elastomer/SWCNT nanocomposites capable of multimode NIR photomechanical actuations

Zhongying Wu,Pin Cheng,Weiguang Zhao,Jianglin Fang,Tianchi Xu,Dongzhong Chen

Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) combine the ordering character of a liquid crystal and the elasticity of a polymer network. The development of fully light-driven LCE-based soft actuators with good reshapeability and recyclability is in high demand. In this work, we prepared SWCNT/LCE composite films through the introduction of allyl sulfide-based dynamic covalent crosslinks in the LCE matrix and the well-dispersed filler single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a strong photothermal effect. The SWCNT/LCE composite films were facilely fabricated with reorientation and remouldable capabilities regulated by 405 nm visible light. The monodomain composite films demonstrated multimode actuations of contraction, bending, curling, stretching recovery, and even shape memory driven by 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light. Moreover, the monodomain spiral ribbon or stretching flat strip and the original polydomain composite film can be readily transformed into each other, and reshaped through easily achievable fabrication conditions. Therefore, the well-prepared SWCNT/LCE composite films with exchangeable covalent crosslinks showed promise as candidates for the development of multimode NIR photomechanical soft actuators with fully light-driven controllability and good remouldability.

Flexible and Foldable Films of SWCNT Thermoelectric Composites and an S-Shape Thermoelectric Generator with a Vertical Temperature Gradient

Shasha Wei,Li Liu,Xuan Huang,Yichuan Zhang,Fusheng Liu,Liang Deng,Emiliano Bilotti,Guangming Chen

Organic thermoelectric (TE) composites and flexible devices have gained a rapid development in recent decade. Herein, a flexible and foldable film of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate)/single-walled carbon nanotube (PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT) composite is fabricated by post-treatment with an ionic liquid (IL), and an S-shape TE generator (TEG) is designed to harvest heat from human body via a vertical temperature gradient. After being post-treated with IL of bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI), the PEDOT:PSS/SWNCT composite displays an improved electrical conductivity from 1063 ± 80 to 1562 ± 170 S cm–1, with an almost constant Seebeck coefficient of ∼21.9 μV K–1 with a 30 wt % content of SWCNT. The TE properties exhibit excellent stability against repeated bending or folding cycles. Furthermore, an S-shape architecture is designed for TEG assembling, which enables effective utilization of a vertical temperature gradient between the human body and surroundings. The present study proposes a universal strategy for harvesting heat using a wearable TEG via a vertical temperature gradient, which represents great prospects for application in self-powered wearable electronics.

A Wide-Range, Highly Stable Intelligent Flexible Pressure Sensor Based on Micro-Wrinkled SWCNT/rGO-PDMS with Efficient Thermal Shrinkage

Lei Fan,Zhaoxin Wang,Tao Yang,Qiang Zhao,Zhixin Wu,Yijie Wang,Xue Qi,Lei Zhang

Flexible pressure sensors have drawn growing attention in areas like human physiological signal monitoring and human–computer interaction. Nevertheless, it still remains a significant challenge to guarantee their long-term stability while attaining a wide detection range, a minute pressure testing limit, and high sensitivity. Inspired by the wrinkles on animal skins, this paper introduces a flexible pressure sensor with wrinkled microstructures. This sensor is composed of a composite of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). After optimizing the proportion of the composite materials, the flexible pressure sensor was manufactured using highly efficient heat-shrinkable films. It has a sensitivity as high as 15.364 kPa−1. Owing to the wrinkled microstructures, the sensor can achieve an ultra-wide pressure detection range, with the maximum reaching 1150 kPa, and is capable of detecting water wave vibrations at the minimum level. Moreover, the wrinkled microstructures were locked by PDMS. The sensor acquired waterproof performance and its mechanical stability was enhanced. Even after 18,000 cycles of repeated loading and unloading, its performance remained unchanged. By combining with an artificial neural network, high-precision recognition of different sounds and postures when grasping different objects was realized, with the accuracies reaching 98.3333% and 99.1111%, respectively. Through the integration of flexible WIFI, real-time wireless transmission of sensing data was made possible. In general, the studied sensor can facilitate the application of flexible pressure sensors in fields such as drowning monitoring, remote traditional Chinese medicine, and intelligent voice.

Facile preparation of self-supporting electrode through phenolic resin-based activated carbon sphere/SWCNT and its application in symmetric supercapacitor

Xicheng Gao,Yaling Gao,Liming Qiu,Chao Zheng,Fei Wei

Activated carbon (AC) is a material possessing an excellent specific surface area and significant potential for application in electronic double-layer supercapacitors, especially when it shows a spherical morphology. Among various types, phenolic resin-based AC exhibits optimal performance. AC derived from phenolic resin forms spheres through an emulsion method, with the particle size controlled by adjusting the ratio of phenolic resin/deionized water and the dispersant content. Further, a self-supporting electrode is fabricated by a scraping method using single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) slurry and activated carbon spheres. Using this electrode, symmetric supercapacitors are assembled with aqueous KOH (SS-K) and organic electrolyte (SS-T), respectively. The SS-K performs a high specific capacitance of 201.9 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g, while the SS-T features a wide potential window of 2.3 V. Moreover, SS-K displays a high energy density of 15.77 Wh/kg at a power density of 750 W/kg, whereas SS-T achieves an excellent energy density of 20.9 Wh/kg at 1150 W/kg. This work presents an efficient method for preparing high-capacity AC spheres and assembling high-performance self-supporting electrodes, facilitating the development of AC based supercapacitor applications.

Synergy of Si, Sn, and SWCNT Enables a Superior Mixed-Conductive Slurry-Coated Anode for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Yu Chen,Long Li,Jinfeng Huang,Jinwei Hong,Qiaocong Zhang,Wenjian Chen,Deyu Qu,Dan Liu

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) with sulfide electrolytes and high-capacity alloy anodes are among the most promising technologies for achieving high safety and energy density. Herein, we demonstrate a slurry-coated sheet-type electrode consisting of a 99.8 wt % Si–Sn hybrid active material and a 0.2 wt % single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) binder, which could be used as a superior anode in ASSLBs. Compared to the typical composite powder electrode, the sheet-type Si–Sn electrode is free of electrolytes and extra carbon additives, enabling higher energy density at the electrode level but dominantly depending on Li+ diffusion and electron transport within the Si–Sn active material. It is identified that the lithiated Si–Sn hybrid is an excellent mixed ion-electron conductor that overcomes insufficient electronic or ionic conductivities of lithiated Si and Sn individuals. In addition, using SWCNT instead of ordinary polymer binders can improve electrode integrity and preserve electrical connections during cycling. When paired with a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode (a mass loading of 11.3 mg cm–2), the Si–Sn–SWCNT||NCM811 full cell shows stable cycling for more than 200 cycles at 0.5C with a capacity retention of 85.9%. Even at a high NCM811 loading of 36.4 mg cm–2, the full cell exhibits a considerable capacity retention of 85.0% (50 cycles, 0.1C) and a maximum areal capacity of 5.8 mAh cm–2. This work provides an industry-compatible method to produce high-performance alloy anodes for ASSLBs.

Preparation of large-area, high-performance single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-based heater films by roll-to-roll gravure printing

Qin Zhang,Yunfei Ren,Zhenguo Wang,Xiaolian Chen,Luis Portilla,Litao Sun,Dongyu Zhang,Jianwen Zhao

In this work, we have developed an eco-friendly and fast method for the preparation of large-area high-performance single-walled-carbon-nanotube (SWCNT)-based conductive thin films on polyethylene terephthalate substrates by roll-to-roll (R2R) gravure printing technology. Large-area (16 cm × 32 cm) conductive films, consisting of SWCNT or SWCNT/silver nanowire (AgNW) films, were fabricated for the first time by R2R gravure printing technique. The conductivity, transmittance, mechanical flexibility and heating ability were evaluated in detail. For example, the square resistances of the SWCNT thin film and SWCNT/AgNW composite film were 69.92 and 17.44 Ω/□ and the optical transmittance at a wavelength of 550 nm were 50.70% and 66.77%, respectively. Meanwhile, the prepared SWCNT and SWCNT/AgNW composite films exhibit excellent heating stability, temperature uniformity and resistance to bending. The composite films can withstand 6000 bending cycles at a curvature radius of 3.5 mm and obtain a temperature of up to 100 °C with a low driving voltage (6 V), a fast heating response (within 15 s) and heating rate (about 4.933 °C s−1). These properties reflect the potential of SWCNTs in improving the mechanical and heating properties of composite films, which are promising for low power, large area, flexible and customizable electronic devices.

Acid-doped polyaniline and its vertically aligned SWCNT composites: Influence of acid type and concentration on structural and electrochemical properties

Jiawei Hai,Chuang Zhan,Xunwei Chen,Biwei Qiu

This study explores how acid type (hydrochloric acid [HCl], p-toluenesulfonic acid [TSA], and formic acid [FA]) and concentration affect the structure of polyaniline (PANI) and the electrochemical properties of its composite with vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). PANI doped with TSA (PANI-TSA) exhibited improved dispersion and conjugation attributed to the larger anion volume, which mitigates interchain spacing, in contrast to PANI doped with HCl (PANI-HCl) and FA (PANI-FA). Additionally, varying the organic acid concentration affected PANI's morphology and the concentration of quinone structure, with TSA leading to a fibrous structure and enhanced electrochemical characteristics. The study further investigated the SWCNTs/PANI composite, revealing that higher TSA concentrations enhance conductivity and specific capacitance of the composite membrane due to sulfonic acid group. Notably, HCl-based SWCNTs/PANI only at higher acid concentrations exhibits superior electrochemical characteristics than TSA-based SWCNTs/PANI, achieving charge transfer resistance down to 5.514 Ω cm 2 at 1.0 mol/L. Moreover, applying an electric field during membrane synthesis significantly increased the specific capacitance of composite prepared with PANI-TSA, highlighting the role of voltage in optimizing electron transport efficiency within the composite.

Ultrahigh Power Factor of Ternary Composites with Abundant Se Nanowires for Thermoelectric Application

Linan Feng,Penglu Yu,Chan Liu,Jinle Lan,Yuan-Hua Lin,Xiaoping Yang

In this work, ultrahigh-performance single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/Se nanowire (NW)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) ternary thermoelectric (TE) nanocomposite films are successfully designed by rational design of CNT/Se/PEDOT:PSS ternary nanocomposites. The addition of CNTs apparently improves the electrical conductivity of composite films, resulting in a relatively huge growth of the power factor. The PEDOT:PSS interface layers uniformly attach on both sides of the Se NWs and CNTs effectively, forming a tightly interleaving and interconnected three-dimensional network. As a consequence, a maximum power factor of 863.83 μW/(m·K2) has been achieved for the sample containing 26 wt % CNTs at 434 K. Ultimately, a flexible TE generator prototype consisting of 5-unit freestanding composite film strips is fabricated using the optimized composite films, which can generate a maximum output power of 206.8 nW at a temperature gradient of 44.7 K. Therefore, the present work has a further potential to be used for the flexible polymer/carbon TE nanocomposite films and devices.

Highly transparent, low sheet resistance and stable Tannic acid modified-SWCNT/AgNW double-layer conductive network for organic light emitting diodes

Ze-Ru Zhu,Wenming Geng,Qingxia Zhu,Anita Sagadevan Ethiraj,Tao Wang,Li-Chao Jing,Yu-Jie Ning,Yi Tian,Wen-Hao Geng,Lei Wu,Hong-Zhang Geng

In this paper, we used tannic acid (TA) functionalized carbon nanotubes (TCNTs), and silver nanowires (AgNWs) to construct a new type of transparent conductive film (TCF) with a double-layered conductive network structure. The hybrid film exhibits excellent light transmittance, high electrical conductivity, ultra-flexibility, and strong adhesion. These outstanding performances benefit from the filling and adhesion of hydrophilic TCNT layers to the AgNW networks. Besides, we introduced the post-treatment process of mechanical pressing and covering polymer conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS, which obtained three layers of TCNT/AgNW/PEDOT hybrid film and greatly improved the comprehensive properties. The hybrid film can reach a sheet resistance of 9.2 Ω sq−1 with a transmittance of 83.4% at 550 nm wavelength, and a low root mean square (RMS) roughness (approximately 3.8 nm). After 10 000 bends and tape testing, the conductivity and transmittance of the hybrid film remain stable. The resistance of the film has no significant degradation after 14 d of exposure to high temperature of 85 °C and humidity of 85%, indicating excellent stability. The organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with TCNT/AgNW/PEDOT hybrid film as anode exhibit high current density and luminosity, confirming this process has considerable potential application in photovoltaic devices.

Boosting the Electrochemical Performance of PI-5-CA/C-SWCNT Nanohybrid for Sensitive Detection of E. coli O157:H7 From the Real Sample

Wang Huan,Fan Yanmiao,Yang Qiaoli,Sun Xiaoyu,Liu Hao,Chen Wei,Aziz Ayesha,Wang Shenqi

Redox activity is an important indicator for evaluating electrochemical biosensors. In this work, we have successfully polymerized indole-5-carboxylic acid into poly-5-carboxyindole nanomaterials (PI-5-CA), using its superior redox activity, and introduced carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotubes (C-SWCNTs) to synthesize a composite material. Finally, a synthesized composite material was used for the modification of the glass carbon electrode to fabricate the PI-5-CA/C-SWCNTs/GCE-based immunosensor and was successfully applied for the sensitive detection of E. coli O157:H7. The fabricated immunosensor exhibited an outstanding electrocatalytic activity toward the detection of E. coli O157:H7 with a remarkably lowest limit of detection (2.5 CFU/ml, LOD = 3 SD/k, n = 3) and has a wide linear range from 2.98×101 to 2.98×107 CFU/ml. Inspired from the excellent results, the fabricated electrode was applied for the detection of bacteria from real samples (water samples) with a good recovery rate (98.13–107.69%) as well as an excellent stability and specificity. Owing to its simple preparation, excellent performance, and detection time within 30 min, our proposed immunosensor will open a new horizon in different fields for the sensitive detection of bacteria from real samples.
