Amorphous boron-rich SiBCN were prepared by high-energy ball-milling of the mixtures of Si, graphite, h-BN, and inorganic boron, which acted as extra boron source. The solid-state amorphization, thermal stability, and crystallization of the boron-rich SiBCN were studied in detail. It was suggested that mechanical alloying can drive solid-state amorphization but also can be an initiation step for the nucleation of nanocrystals. The amorphous networks of Si-C, C-B, C-C, C-N, B-N, and C-B-N bonds are detected by XPS; however, solid-state NMR further confirms the formation of a new chemical environment around B atoms, BC 3 . The increases in boron content improve the thermal stability of SiBCN ceramics but weaken their oxidation resistance. Nano-SiC crystallizes first while BN(C) forms subsequently. Boron promoting SiC crystallization may result from the reduced hindering effects of B-N-C nanodomains that retard SiC crystallization.

Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber materials prepared by precursor conversion method have attracted extensive attention in recent years due to their excellent high temperature resistance and thermal insulation properties. Herein, a novel SiBCN/SiC dual network ceramic composite aerogel with the three-dimensional (3D) porous SiC fiber network obtained by direct electrospinning as the first network and SiBCN aerogel as the second network was prepared by combining electrospinning with sol-gel technology and supercritical drying technology. The microstructure, phase composition, pore size distribution , compressive resistance, thermal insulation and related mechanisms of the 3D SiC fiber network and composite aerogel at different heat treatment temperatures were investigated in detail. The results show that the constructed double-network structure can make up for the heat transfer problem of a single SiC fiber network and further reduce its thermal conductivity , so that the prepared composite aerogel exhibits a lower thermal conductivity (∼0.0316 W m −1 K −1 ). In addition, the unique double network structure endows the composite aerogel with excellent compressive properties (2.56–2.89 MPa).

Polyborosilazanes with controllable B/N ratio were synthesized using high-boron-contentm-carborane, dichloromethylsilane, and hexamethydisilazane. After high-temperature pyrolysis, Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics with SiC and B4C as the main phases were obtained. The B/N ratio in the precursors corresponded to the change in the feeding ratio of carborane and dichloromethylsilane. The effects of boron content and B/N ratio on the ceramic precursors and microphase structure in Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics were explored in detail through a series of analytical characterization methods. A high boron content results in a significant increase in the ceramic yield (up to 71 wt%) of polyborosilazanes, and at the same time, the B/N molar ratio was regulated from 28.4:1 to 1.62:1. The appearance of the B4C structure in the Si–B–C–N quaternary ceramics through the regulation of the B/N ratio, has rarely been reported. Keywords:polyborosilazane;SiBCN;carborane;polymer derived ceramics;B/N ratio;microphase evolution

High-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are required for advanced electronic devices and communication systems. Here, a nanocarbon-reinforced-silicon boron carbonitride film (denoted as SiBCN@CF/CNTs) with sandwiched structure was prepared via polyborosilazane (PBSZ) infiltration, lamination and pyrolysis by using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) films as surface layers and carbon foam (CF) as intermediate layer. The SiBCN@CNTs surface layer with high electrical conductivity effectively reflects most of electromagnetic waves, and the SiBCN@CF intermediate layer further increases the absorption of incoming waves via ohmic loss and multiple reflection loss. The construction of the conductive SiBCN@CF layer can effectively enhance the total EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE Total ) of the films up to 44.3 dB, much higher than that of 25.8 dB for the sandwiched film with nonconductive intermediate layer. Moreover, increased porosity in the SiBCN@CF layer endows the SiBCN@CF/CNTs film with a high specific EMI SE Total of up to 131.2 dB cm 3 g −1 causes by increased multiple reflection loss. Therefore, it is an ideal route to construct a conductive network and porous structure in sandwiched EMI material for achieving high-efficiency shielding performance.

Electromagnetic wave (EMW)-absorbing ceramic metamaterials without doping absorbers were prepared by direct pyrolysis of polymer-derived SiBCN ceramics (PDC-SiBCN). The pyrolytic behavior of the ceramics, the effect of the pyrolysis temperature on the mechanical strength , and the EMW absorption properties of the metamaterials are discussed in detail. The mechanism of the enhanced EMW absorption by the metamaterials was further analyzed. The results indicated that PDC-SiBCN demonstrated the optimum impedance matching and absorption performance at a pyrolysis temperature of 1500 °C. The metamaterial can effectively absorb the full X-band when its thickness is in the range of 4.3–5.7 mm. When the thickness was adjusted to 4.7 mm, the minimum reflection coefficient (RC) reached − 26.6 dB. In addition, the flexural strength of the metamaterial was 31.2 MPa, and the compressive strength was 96.9 MPa, which is 60 times higher than that of the solid structure. This study provides a feasible guide for the simple fabrication of lightweight, high-strength, and high-performance EMW-absorbing materials.

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) are typically prepared as ceramic-based microwave absorption materials by doping with high-dielectric materials or transition metals, which may lead to the issue of uneven mixing. This study achieves uniform blending at the molecular level by using poly(dimethylsilylene)diacetylenes (PDSDA) to modify hyperbranched polyborosilazane (PBSZ). The alkynyl group and Si−H bonds crosslink to form a ceramic precursor, which is then pyrolyzed to prepare SiBCN ceramics with excellent microwave absorption performance and high temperature stability. The introduction of PDSDA significantly improved the ceramic yield, resulting in the in situ formation of more ordered carbon, SiC nanocrystals, and ceramic nanowires within the SiBCN ceramics. These nanophases are uniformly dispersed throughout the ceramic matrix, enhancing the ceramic's dielectric loss and microwave absorption properties. After pyrolyzed at 1400°C, the ceramic derived from the precursor with a PBSZ:PDSDA mass ratio of 10:1 exhibits excellent electromagnetic wave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss of −50.11 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 3.11 GHz. Moreover, ceramics maintain excellent stability at 1500°C in both argon and air environments. This study fully exploits the designability of precursor molecules, providing a new approach for the preparation of microwave absorption materials from PDCs route.

SiBCN ceramics have a wide range of applications in the field of high temperature electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption owing to their excellent EMW attenuation and oxidation resistance. However, excessive SiC and insufficient Si3N4 in the SiBCN ceramics deteriorate the impedance matching characteristics, and weaken the absorption ability for EMW. In this paper, the amount of SiC and Si3N4 is balanced by a competitive reaction strategy, in which HfZr atoms are introduced to modulate the dielectric phases in the SiBCN ceramics. The formation of a HfZrCN compound produces a cage-like structure around Si3N4, inhibiting the reaction of Si3N4 with carbon to form SiC. The appropriate amounts of SiC and Si3N4, and the abundant interfaces and defects jointly enhance the EMW absorption capability by simultaneously improving the impedance matching and attenuation capability. Thus, an effective absorption band of 4.96 GHz (11.20–16.16 GHz) is reached with a thickness of 1.7 mm for the HfZr-SiBCN ceramics. This work provides a new strategy for simultaneously improving the impedance matching and EMW attenuation capability of polymer-derived ceramics by introducing difficult-to-migrate atoms to regulate the content of the dielectric phase.

Silicon boron carbonitride (SiBCN) ceramics have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional high-temperature stability, resistance to creep, and favorable electrical properties. However, the ceramicization mechanism of covalently bonded boron atoms in polyborosilazane (PBSN), which is crucial in determining the structural and crystalline phase evolution of silicon boron carbonitride (SiBCN) ceramics through the polymer-to-ceramic process, still needs further clarification for the design of advanced ceramics. Therefore, PBSN precursors constructed with B–C bonds were systematically investigated in the polymer-to-ceramic conversion process. B–C bonds were transformed into B-N bonds between 300°C and 600°C, ultimately resulting in the formation of h-BN at high temperatures. Meanwhile, higher levels (8.11–14.12%) of B facilitated the formation of SiC at equivalent temperatures but hindered the formation of Si 3 N 4 crystal nuclei. That is due to the formation of B–N and NB 3 units, which inhibited the formation of Si–N bonds and SiN 4 units, thereby interfering with the nucleation process of Si 3 N 4 and facilitating the crystallization of SiC. This study offers valuable insights for regulating the microphase evolution and properties of PDC nanocomposites.

Metal-ceramic composites have emerged as a research hotspot due to their combined advantages of both ceramic and metallic properties. This study presents an innovative strategy for fabricating In718/SiBCN cermet composites via light-curing 3D printing and systematically investigates their mechanical properties, interfacial structure, and strengthening mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the composites exhibit outstanding performance, including a low density of 6.89 g/cm 3 , a high flexural strength of 751.68 MPa, and a specific strength of 109.10 MPa/g/cm 3 . Notably, chromium precipitates from the metal and undergoes a carburization reaction, forming Cr 23 C 6 in situ. This carbide exists as a precipitate phase within the metallic matrix, establishing a strong interfacial bond with the matrix. Nanoindentation measurements reveal that the average hardness and modulus of the composites reach 12.85 GPa and 216.23 GPa, respectively, which are significantly higher than those of monolithic SiBCN and In718. Finally, the fracture mechanisms indicate that cracks propagate along the secondary phase particles in a transgranular manner, promoting crack deflection and generating extensive microcracking. These mechanisms facilitate substantial energy dissipation, thereby markedly improving both the strength and toughness of the composites.

Silicoboron carbonitride (SiBCN) ceramics are developed as microwave absorption material for high-temperature environments under multicomponent doping and in-situ crystallization. In this study, amorphous SiBCN microwave absorption ceramics was derived from single-source hyperbranched polyborosilazanes containing benzene rings synthesized by the one-pot method. The carbon element and ordered carbon ratio of the pyrolyzed SiBCN ceramics enhanced with an increase in the proportion of dichlorodiphenylsilane. By adjusting the monomer ratio and pyrolysis temperature of ceramic precursor, the polymer derived ceramics (PDCs) could achieve good microwave absorption properties while remaining amorphous, with minimum reflection coefficient (RC min ) up to -30.79 dB and maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) up to 4.07 GHz. Meanwhile, the PDC-SiBCN ceramics exbibited outstanding high temperature stability with essentially no mass loss in argon (Ar) and air atmospheres until 1400 °C. This novel, convenient PDC-SiBCN preparation with potential for scaled-up production provides new ideas for microwave absorption materials for applications in extreme environments.

Developing lightweight materials that displayed excellent thermal stability, strong electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance, and low thermal conductivity was essential to meet the integrated requirements of thermal protection and electromagnetic stealth in hypersonic vehicles. Among the promising candidates, polymer-derived SiBCN ceramic aerogels stood out owing to their low density, exceptional high-temperature stability, and tunable dielectric properties. However, their intrinsic dielectric loss capability remained insufficient, which limited their applications in the field of EMW absorption. To address this issue, a precursor molecular engineering strategy was employed to fabricate SiBCN ceramic aerogels with in-situ sp 2 hybridized carbon networks, wherein divinylbenzene (DVB) was introduced to regulate polyborosilazane (PSNB) at the molecular level. The results demonstrated that the cross-linking effect of DVB strengthened the aerogel skeleton, and the compressive strength of the SiBCN aerogel increased from 0.16 to 0.35 MPa. The well-dispersed carbon nanodomains introduced by DVB effectively optimized the balance between impedance matching and attenuation capability. The optimized SiBCN aerogel, prepared with a Si–H/C=C molar ratio of 1:2, achieved a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −53.4 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.14 GHz, while maintaining a low thermal conductivity of 0.055 W m -1 K -1 and a low density of 0.12 g/cm 3 . The study provided an effective approach for the rational design of multifunctional and high-temperature-resistant integrated materials.

Hypersonic vehicles operate under conditions of extreme aerodynamic heating, which presents significant challenges for the design of thermal protection system (TPS). Carbon-bonded carbon fiber (CBCF) composites, known for their exceptional thermal stability, lightweight and oxidative resistance, are highly desirable materials for TPS; nevertheless, their inherent anisotropy in thermal conductivity constrains the efficiency of in-plane heat transfer under severe thermal gradients. Herein, we developed an innovative CBCF composite impregnated with SiBCN–ZrO 2 aerogels (CBCF/SiBCN–ZrO 2 ), which establishes a synergistic architecture to enhance the efficiency of in-plane heat dissipation, thereby mitigating temperature gradients and improving thermal management. The precursor aerogel intended for the matrix was primarily investigated. The CBCF/SiBCN–ZrO 2 composite was synthesized through a solvothermal reaction following infiltration. Microscopic morphology analysis revealed that the aerogel matrix effectively encapsulated and filled the interior of the modified CBCF framework. The lightweight CBCF/SiBCN–ZrO 2 composite exhibited a density of 0.25–0.26 g/cm 3 , with compressive strengths of 2.82–3.19 MPa and 1.30–1.39 MPa in the in-plane (IP) and through-the-thickness (TTT) directions, respectively. The dual functionality of both thermal insulation and in-plane conduction was characterized and verified through quantitative thermal conductivity testing, as well as qualitative assessments of its insulation and in-plane heat‑leading properties. The sample with a single 0.2 mm-thick heat‑leading layer exhibited thermal conductivities of 29.35 W/(m·K) in the IP direction and 0.075 W/(m·K) in the TTT direction. This nearly 400-fold anisotropic difference endows the sample with highly efficient thermal management capabilities, potentially addressing the critical requirements for multifunctional TPS in aerospace applications.
