Addressing the challenges associated with noise pollution problem necessitates the development of composite materials exhibiting both sound absorption and fire resistance under extreme environmental conditions. Conventional foam materials are limited by inadequate heat resistance, insufficient moisture resistance, and suboptimal functionality, rendering them unsuitable for such harsh environments. A new SiO 2 /C/SiBOC ceramic matrix porous sound-absorbing material was fabricated through a combination of sol-gel process, electrospinning, and organic impregnation techniques. Polyurethane foam (PUF) served as a template to establish a porous structure, while the SiBOC ceramic matrix conferred high-temperature resistance, and SiO 2 /C fiber reinforced the mechanical properties. Compared to traditional sound-absorbing materials, the developed composite demonstrates efficient sound absorption at low frequencies (NRC = 0.46) and across a broad frequency range (25–6500 Hz, α > 0.8). Additionally, it exhibits excellent thermal stability at elevated temperatures (up to 1400 °C), low thermal conductivity at room temperature (0.03463 W/m·K), high compressive strength (2.21 MPa), superior moisture resistance (contact angle θ = 101.4°), and a lightweight structure. This study contributes by proposing and validating a new design concept for porous ceramic composites, which can simultaneously balance acoustic, thermal, and mechanical properties as well as moisture resistance, effectively filling the gap in application areas of existing material systems.

Abstract Unsaturated silicon oxide (SiOx) as one of the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) shows relatively high specific capacity, but its overall electrochemical performances remain to be improved. Herein, a facile synthetic approach is developed to deposit SiOx and amorphous carbon on spherical graphite particles getting core–shell structured graphite@SiOx/C (SG@SiOx/C) composites via tetraethyl orthosilicate and ascorbic acid as precursors. The homogeneous and dense SiOx/C layer can improve the structural integrity of the SG@SiOx/C anodes and afford the composites with manifest specific capacity for Li+ storage. To improve the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), the SG@SiOx/C composites are further chemically prelithiated. The prelithiated SG@SiOx/C exhibits an initial lithiation/delithiation capacity of 632.6/629.4 mAh g–1 with a remarkable ICE of 99.5%. The reversible specific capacity can remain at 390.5 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1C. This work offers technical guidance on how to synthesize high-performance graphite@SiOx composites, providing a pathway to high-energy-density LIBs.

Silicon monoxide (SiO) is a promising anode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its higher capacity than graphite and better cycle life than pure silicon. However, the issues of volume changes, low mass loading, and poor conductivity still exist. In this study, an economic battery manufacturing technique is developed to promote the performance of commercial SiO/C-based batteries. A novel triblock copolymer binder was synthesized and used to relieve the volume changes and improve ion transportation. Copper nanowires were adopted in the anode material to improve electrical conductivity. A high mass loading anode with a laminated conductive structure was fabricated by spraying a layer upon layer. The synthesized SiO/C exhibits a high specific capacity retention of 606 mA h g–1 after 200 cycles at a high areal mass loading of 10.26 mg cm–2. Furthermore, under a current density of 1 C (1255 mA g–1), it delivers a reversible rate capacity of 620 mA h g–1. This novel design paves a new way to fabricate high-performance SiO-based anodes for commercial LIB applications.

Commercialization of SiO/graphite (SiO/G) composite anode material has been partially conducted in modern-model Li-ion batteries but is still limited by its relatively high cost and inferior stability. Improving the Li-ion storage performance as well as lowering the manufacturing cost of SiO/G anode has been the ongoing target of many studies. Herein, a low cost SiO/G anode with good Li-ion storage performance is developed by facilely integrating SiO nanoparticles into spent graphite (SG) extracted from used LiFePO 4 batteries. The loose SG particles after repeated charge/discharge cycles can be easily exfoliated and combined with the SiO nanoparticles during the mechanical ball-milling treatment. Further processing the composite into spherical structure by spray-drying and pyrolysis results in practically applicable anode materials. The SiO/SG/C anode with a SiO mass ratio of 30 % exhibits the best overall performance including an excellent rate capability (385 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 ) and encouraging cycle stability (442 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). The coin-type full cells coupling the pre-lithiated spherical SiO/SG anode and NCM811 cathode delivers a high energy density of 461 Wh kg −1 (based on the active masses of both electrodes) and good cycle performance (74.4 % capacity retention at 0.5C after 100 cycles). This work not only provides a high performance yet low cost SiO/G anode material, but explores a high value added way for the reuse of SG, thus can practically push forward the development of LIBs .

Although LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) has been widely used in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as cathode materials, the high content of nickel typically leads to performance deterioration and other safety issues due to the catalytic decomposition of electrolyte. Herein, we propose a strategy to improve the stability of electrolyte by adopting anhydride-based additives with benzene group (e.g., 6FDA, FPA, and PSA). The theoretical calculation, electrochemical test, and structural characterization indicate that the addition of PSA enables NCM811 to better cycling performance at high, ambient, and low temperatures for pouch cells with SiO/graphite as the anode owing to its higher reduction potential in comparison with that of 6FDA and FPA.

Graphical Breaking the ICE : The SiO anode in Li-ion batteries has low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) because of the irreversible formation of Li 2 O and lithium silicates. Sn-mixed SiO shows great promise to address these issues by reactivating Li 2 O, in the inverse reaction to that occurring at the metal oxide anodes. Sn is shown to form an outstanding conductive phase, which boosts the reaction kinetics and also reactivates Li 2 O. The application of SiO anodes in Li-ion batteries is greatly restricted by its low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE). Usually, a pre-lithiation procedure is necessary to improve the ICE, but the available technologies are associated with safety issues. Metal (M)-mixed SiO shows great promise to address these issues by reactivating Li 2 O through the reaction M+Li 2 O→MO x +Li + , which is the inverse reaction to that occurring at MO x anodes. Sn is found to be a good choice of metal for this concept. Nanoscale Sn-mixed SiO composites are prepared by mechanical milling. Sn forms an outstanding conductive phase, which boosts the reaction kinetics and also reactivates the Li 2 O byproduct. Sn/SiO (1:2 w/w) delivers a significant improvement in ICE from 66.5 % to 85.5 %. A higher ICE value of >90 % is obtained when the Sn content is ≥50 wt %. However, additional electrolyte decomposition occurs, which is catalyzed by Sn. In addition, coarsening of the nano-Sn material reduces the inverse conversion reactivity of Sn/Li 2 O and subsequently results in rapid capacity fading. The quantitative analysis indicates that, in contrast to transition metals, the alloying and dealloying nature of Sn gives a 50 % improvement in reversible capacity, attributed to Sn/Li 2 O. This work gives a general strategy to choose metals for increasing the ICE of SiO x and metal oxides.

The micro-sized SiO-based composite anode material (d-SiO/G/C) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is achieved via the disproportionation reaction of SiO followed by a pitch pyrolysis reaction. The d-SiO/G/C composite exhibits an initial reversible capacity of 905 mAh g −1 and excellent cycling stability. The initial Coulombic efficiency of the d-SiO/G/C composite can be significantly improved from 68.1% to 98.5% by the prelithiation of the composite anode using stabilized lithium metal powders (SLMP), which counteracts the irreversible capacity loss caused by the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and irreversible conversion reaction during the first lithiation . The micro-sized d-SiO/G/C composite anode with SLMP prelithiation maintains an excellent cycling stability, suggesting its great potential in practical application for high specific energy lithium ion batteries .

Conventional polymer film capacitors suffer from significant performance degradation at high temperatures due to increased conductivity loss. This study aims to enhance the high-temperature energy storage performance of polyetherimide (PEI) films by constructing a PZT/SiO 2 heterojunction composite dielectric structure. PEI films were prepared by solution casting and then modified by magnetron sputtering to deposit PZT and SiO 2 layers. At 150 °C, the composite films exhibited a high breakdown strength of 636.7 MV/m, a discharged energy density of 4.28 J/cm 3 , and a charge–discharge efficiency exceeding 90%. The PZT/SiO 2 heterojunction effectively inhibited charge injection, reducing leakage current and improving cyclic stability with minimal degradation after 50000 charge–discharge cycles. This scalable method offers a promising approach for developing high-performance polymer-based energy storage materials suitable for high-temperature applications.

Cuproptosis is a copper-dependent programmed cell death triggered by mitochondrial dysfunction, offers significant anti-tumor potential but requires tumor-specific copper delivery to avoid systemic toxicity. Here, we developed a synergistic nanoplatform (Cu₂O@SiO₂-Ce6, CSC) integrating cuproptosis induction with photodynamic therapy (PDT). Cuprous oxide (Cu₂O) core was encapsulated in silicon dioxide and covalently linked to the photosensitizer Ce6. After accumulating in tumors regions via the EPR effect, CSC releases a surge of copper ions upon encountering the acidic tumor microenvironment and lysosomes. These ions induce mitochondrial cuproptosis by aggregating lipoylated TCA cycle proteins and depleting Fe-S cluster proteins. Concurrently, laser irradiation activates Ce6 to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), actively disrupting tumor membranes. The experiments showed that the nanoplatform significantly enhanced the tumor cell killing effect and reduced the toxicity to normal tissues through a dual mechanism, which provided a new strategy for overcoming the drug resistance of PDT and the precise regulation of cuproptosis.

The conservation of sandstone cultural relics has gained increasing attention due to their scarcity, historical and cultural value. However, they exhibit a vulnerability that must endure degradation caused by prolonged outdoor exposure, particularly the hazards caused by water infiltration. Herein, we have designed and developed a hydrophobic composite coating for safeguarding outdoor-exposed sandstone relics. The coating has integrated the silica nanoparticles modified by perfluorodecyl triethoxysilane (FAS-17) with fluorinated resin and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to achieve waterproofing for outdoor-exposed sandstone. The protective effect of the coating has been systematically evaluated through water contact angle (WCA) measurements under various environmental tolerances such as acid rain resistance, mechanical bearing capacity, and adaptability for wide temperature range adaptability (-20 ℃ and 80 ℃). The tested results demonstrate that the coating on sandstone shows superhydrophobic ability and stability. For example, the coating exhibits exceptional hydrophobicity (WCA > 150°) and self-cleaning properties after various accelerated aging cycles such as under acidic rain, mechanical peeling, sand impact, high and low temperature environments. Importantly, the coating on sandstone can preserve the inherent permeability of sandstone substrates while providing robust interfacial adhesion. These outcomes highlight the potential of the FAS-SiO 2 based composite coating as a durable and compatible coating for mitigating outdoor environment-induced deterioration in sandstone cultural heritage conservation.

To enhance oxidation resistance of carbon/carbon (C/C) composite materials at 1973 K in static air, a novel bilayer Yb 2 O 3 -HfB 2 -SiC/SiC (denoted YHSS) coatings were engineered via a two-step process combining pack cementation and slurry method. A substantial loading of ceramic phases (∼60 wt %) was incorporated into the SiC ceramic layer to improve thermal stability of the oxide scale at 1973 K. Following pre-oxidation, the YHSS coatings impart effective oxidation protection to C/C composite materials for over 228 h at 1973 K. Coupled experimental and theoretical analyses confirm that Yb and Hf atoms diffuse into the thermally grown SiO 2 layer, thereby reinforcing the SiO 2 network structure. Furthermore, the coating's exceptional performance is attributed to its dense, flaw-free surface morphology and the homogeneous dispersion of high-content ceramic phases throughout the SiC layer, collectively suppressing oxygen permeation.

Decorating transition metal oxide in combination of carbon coating has been verified as an effective way to boost the cycling stability of SiO anode. However, the weak bonding between the transition metal oxides and SiO matrix tends to weaken the modification effect. Herein, SiO@C anode is modified with in situ formed Mn 2 SiO 4 interphase through solid-state reaction between SiO and the hydrothermally grown MnO 2 at the presence of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) resin coating layer. The Mn 2 SiO 4 interphase buffers the volume change of the composite anode through a reversible conversion reaction, leading to greatly enhanced cycle stability. For the optimized SiO/Mn 2 SiO 4 @C anodes, capacity retention ratios higher than 84% are preserved after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 , significantly outperforming that of the SiO@C anode (65%). This work provides a facile strategy to fully exploit the modification effect of transition metal oxide on SiO-based anode, thus paving the way for high energy density Li-ion batteries with superior cycling stability.
