TiO2/SnS/MoS2 ternary nanorod arrays were synthesized on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) conductive glass by a successive hydrothermal method. The morphology, microstructure, optical properties, photodegradation activity, photoelectrochemical performance, and charge transport mechanism of TiO2/SnS/MoS2 were systematically studied. It was found that SnS and MoS2 with a narrow bandgap can facilitate light absorbance of TiO2/SnS/MoS2 heterostructures across the visible range, improving the utilization of sunlight. TiO2/SnS/MoS2 exhibits the maximum photodegradation rate (61.54%) for Rhodamine B (RhB) in 60 min with a pseudo-first-order rate constant (0.0122 min−1), which is about 5.16 times better than that of TiO2. As a photoanode, TiO2/SnS/MoS2 has the highest photocurrent (0.841 mA cm−2), which is approximately 8.32 times better than those of TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2/SnS/MoS2 is ascribed to the Z-scheme mechanism determined by the detection of active species and the synergistic effect of SnS and MoS2 co-decoration.

In this study, a polyaniline-modified 3D-spongy SnS photocatalyst (PANI/SnS) has been prepared using an in-situ oxidative polymerization technique for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. PANI/SnS reached to a rate constant of 4.040 × 10 −2 min -1 > 2 times of that pure SnS and maintained a good stability after four cycling runs for methyl orange degradation. The better photocatalytic activity and stability of PANI/SnS catalyst were ascribed to the π-conjugated structure characteristic of PANI and the interaction between PANI and SnS. On the one hand, induced π-conjugated electrons transferred from PANI to SnS could effectually inhibite the electrons and holes recombination. On the other hand, the presence of C–S and Sn-N bonds between PANI and SnS could protect the S and/or Sn element from direct exposure to the corrosive environment, then restraining photocorrosion behavior. This study implies that conductive conjugated polymer (PANI) modified tin sulfide will be a potential reusable and stable photocatalyst for methyl orange removal from waste-water by photocatalysis .

To study the possibility of SnS as an earth-abundant and environmentally friendly thermoelectric material, the electrical and thermal transport properties of bulk materials prepared by combining mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering were investigated. It was revealed that SnS has potential as a good thermoelectric material, benefiting from its intrinsically low thermal conductivity below 1.0 W/m/K above 400 K and its high Seebeck coefficient over 500 μ V/K. Although the highest ZT value was 0.16 at 823 K in the pristine sample, further enhancement can be expected through chemical doping to increase the electrical conductivity. It was also revealed that changing the stoichiometric ratio and sintering temperature had less apparent influence on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of SnS because redundant S in the powders decomposed during the sintering process.

Layered tin monosulfide (SnS) is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries because of its high theoretical capacity of 1020 mA h g–1. Its large interlayer spacing permits fast sodium-ion transport, making it a viable candidate for sodium-ion capacitors (SICs). In this work, we designed and synthesized oriented SnS nanosheets confined in graphene in the presence of poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) by electrostatic self-assembly during hydrothermal growth. SnS nanosheets growing along (l00) and (0l0) directions are suppressed because of the confinement by graphene, which exhibit smaller thickness and particle size. These nanostructures expose abundant open edges because of the presence of Sn4+–O, which offers rich active sites and Na+ easy transport pathways. Vacancies formed at these edges along with S and N codopants in the graphitic structure synergistically promoted Na+ surface adsorption/desorption. Such nanocomposites with SnS nanosheets confined by N,S codoped graphene demonstrated significantly enhanced pseudocapacitance. The SICs delivered excellent energy densities of 113 and 54 W h kg–1 at power densities of 101 and 11 100 W kg–1, respectively, with 76% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 1 A g–1.

The development of flexible energy storage devices is the key to widen the application of flexible electronics and wearable devices . Flexible electrodes with superior electrochemical performance are critical components for flexible energy storage devices. Herein, we propose a simple and versatile electrospinning strategy to prepare the SnS/C nanofibers (SnS/C NFs) film. By using SnS/C NFs film directly as a free-standing anode in both lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), it can provide outstanding electrochemical performance. For LIBs, it delivers high capacities of 648 and 548 mA h g -1 at 200 and 500 mA g -1 respectively after 500 cycles. It even shows outstanding cyclability for 1000 cycles. For SIBs, it retains capacity of 481 mA h g -1 after 100 cycles at 50 mA g -1 . Moreover, the capacity remains as high as 349 mA h g -1 at 200 mA g -1 after 500 cycles. The outstanding electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the fact that the fine SnS nanoparticles dispersed in one-dimensional porous nanofibers with uniform diameters around 130 nm shorten the transport path of ions and electrons, and the presence of N-doped carbon enhanced the electrical conductivity as well as relieve the volume change caused by the alloying/de-alloying reaction. Besides, the ultra-robust mechanical flexibility of SnS/C NFs film makes it a promising anode candidate for flexible LIB and SIB in future.

New SnS@SBA-15 was developed for the efficient adsorption and storage of iodine. • The iodine adsorption capacity was up to 2062 mg/g. • The iodine adsorption mechanism was chemical adsorption (SnS + I 2 → SnI 4 + S). • The retention rate of adsorption product SnI 4 was up to 76.5% after storage for 90 d. • Stable iodine storage was due to the in-situ reconstructed hydrophobic environment. Tin-based materials are expected to be excellent iodine adsorbent, but the stability of the adsorption product (SnI 4 ) poses challenge. Herein, a novel strategy based on the in-situ reconstruction of hydrophobic environment was presented for efficient iodine adsorption and storage. Stannous sulfide@mesoporous silica (SnS@SBA-15) was developed and employed for the adsorption of I 2 gas. The optimal material, SnS@SBA-15–50wt%, exhibited an excellent iodine uptake of 2062 mg/g. The adsorption was attributed to a chemical reaction (SnS + 2I 2 = SnI 4 + S). Notably, the retention rate of SnI 4 was as high as 76.5% after storage in air for 90 days due to the in-situ reconstructed hydrophobic environment. The obtained SnS@SBA-15 exhibited efficient iodine adsorption and excellent storage ability. This work presents a novel strategy to design iodine adsorbents, aimed at addressing the storage challenges of iodine adsorption products susceptible to hydrolysis. A SnS 2 /graphene/SnS trilayer vdW heterojunction was constructed. • Graphene promotes charge transport and suppresses dark current. • The device achieves 5656.3 A W −1 responsivity at 405 nm. • Broadband detection from 405 to 850 nm is demonstrated. • Self-powered operation and imaging applications are achieved. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising materials for broadband photodetection, benefiting from their favorable light–matter interaction and electrical properties. As an n-type layered semiconductor, SnS 2 is suitable for photodetection because carriers can move efficiently in it and incident light can be effectively absorbed, making it suitable for photodetection applications. In this work, SnS 2 /graphene/SnS (SnS 2 /Gr/SnS) trilayer van der Waals heterojunctions and corresponding photodetectors were fabricated and investigated. Owing to the graphene interlayer, which serves as both a carrier transport layer and a barrier layer, The detector responds to light over a wide spectral range, covering both the near-ultraviolet (NUV) and near-infrared (NIR) regions. Under 405-nm irradiation, the photodetector reaches an R value of 5656.3 A·W −1 and a D ⁎ value of 3.33 × 10 13 Jones. When the wavelength is extended to 850 nm, the responsivity remains 574.2 A·W −1 . The device also shows clear self-powered behavior, outperforming the conventional SnS 2 /SnS bilayer heterojunction photodetector. These results offer an effective strategy for improving SnS 2 -based broadband photodetectors and promotes their potential applications in optical communication and single-pixel imaging. The rational control of the nucleation and growth kinetics to enable the high-quality growth of two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting metal chalcogenide heterostructures is a key step for the realization of their applications in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. Here, we report a facile one-step chemical vapor deposition synthesis of 2D SnS–SnS2 heterostructures with controlled interfacial structures and stacking configurations via tuning S-precursor concentration during the growth. We demonstrate that the change of S-precursor concentration can drive growth transition from vertically stacking SnS2/SnS van der Waals heterostructures to SnS/SnS2 core–shell structures with both the lateral and vertical interfaces. Such a transition originates from a delicate competition between the nucleation of SnS and SnS2. High-resolution spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal these SnS–SnS2 heterostructures with the type-II band alignment, and the measured valence and conduction band offsets are 1.33 and 0.34 eV for vertical SnS2/SnS heterostructures and 1.43 and 0.54 eV for SnS/SnS2 core–shell ones, respectively. This work provides an efficient strategy to control the growth of 2D SnS–SnS2 heterostructures for optoelectronic applications, such as photodetectors and solar cells.

The significant capacity loss and pulverization caused by the dramatic increase in volume of Sn-based anodes during redox reactions severely limit their practical application in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, with the ultralong cycle life and high capacity Sn-based compounds (SnS-C/NS@CNFs), a self-supporting anode was prepared by electrospinning followed by the calcination scheme, which is a superb material for lithium storage since the buffer matrix reduces the volume expansion of Sn. In this strategy, SnS nanoparticles are scattered into a porous carbon framework using Sn-MOFs as a pore-forming template, which allows for easier extraction–insertion of Li-ions due to their inherent layered structure. Moreover, the nitrogen and S-doped carbon nanofibers not only serve as a barrier to impede the aggregation and volume expansion of SnS during cycling but also act as electrical pathways to enhance the conductivity of the electrodes. Having profited from the desirable nanostructures, the flexible three-dimensional cross-linked nanofibers were straightly used as a self-supporting anode for LIBs, displaying ultralong cycle life (455.8 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 1 A/g) and exceptional rate performance (481 mAh/g at 2 A/g). This work offers a reliable and efficient method for fabricating flexible self-standing and durable electrodes.

Tin sulfides are promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) for their high theoretical capacity and fast kinetics for Na storage. However, the severe volume expansion and intrinsically low charge conductivity fundamentally compromise their electrochemical performance. Addressing at the issue, SnS 2 /SnS heterostructures are decorated on three-dimensional graphene nanosheets (3D GNS) framework, which is then shielded with a nanocarbon layer. In this nanocomposite, the SnS 2 /SnS p-n heterostructures induce an internal electric field on the heterointerfaces to promote the charge transfer inside the material, which effectively ensures the rate capability of the material. Moreover, the 3D GNS provides a porous conductive network to accelerate the long-range transport of electron further enhancing its rate performance. Meanwhile, the dual-carbon structure would alleviate the volume expansion of SnS 2 /SnS during cycling, ensuring improved stability. The integration of these merits leads to excellent battery performance for the material, including high reversible capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. This concept of simultaneously enhancing the ionic, electronic, and mass conductivity as well as the structural stability by combining heterogeneous structures, 3D conductive networks, and protective shields can further shed light on not only SIB materials but also other energy storage materials or devices.

Metal sulfide-based gas sensors have the advantage of high sensitivity at room temperature, enabling high integration and low power consumption. However, a trade-off between low baseline resistance and good long-term stability at room temperature still needs to be addressed. Therefore, a single-atom Ce-targeted regulation strategy for p-SnS/n-SnS 2 was proposed. By doping different amounts of Ce, the amount and size of SnS quantum dots on the surface of SnS 2 can be regulated. Furthermore, Sn-S-Ce bonds are formed by combining single-atom Ce with SnS, which effectively hinders the growth and oxidation of SnS quantum dots, as evidenced by STEM, XPS, DFT, FTIR and EAXFS methods. Due to the unique energy band structure of p-SnS and n-SnS 2 , Ce-doped SnS quantum dots serve as electronic sensitizers, effectively increasing the carrier concentration in SnS 2 . The optimal gas sensor based on the 1% Ce-doped SnS/SnS 2 composites enables high sensitivity (with a response of 22.1 to 1 ppm NO 2 ), ultralow detection limit (1 ppb), excellent long-term stability at room temperature, and a lower baseline resistance. This engineering strategy of metal sulfide semiconductor heterostructures through single-atom targeted regulation provides new insights for further optimizing the composite system.

Among the tin-based composites, stannous sulfide (SnS) is a prospective material to serve as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) owing to its high theoretical-capacity, layer-structure for fast Li+ diffusion paths, and low toxicity. However, severe volume expansion/shrinkage exfoliates the electrode coating, leading to the severe loss of active materials. Herein, free volume was introduced into SnS to relieve the sequelae of volume expansion/shrinkage creatively, which effectively improved the cyclability of the SnS-based anode. The as-synthesized SnS/G-15% exhibited overall optimal electrochemical performances, i.e., the highest reversible capacity and best cyclability over pure SnS, SnS/G-5% and SnS/G-25%. Ex situ scanning electron microscopy images also illustrated that no cracks were generated in the cycled SnS/G-15% electrode. This work highlights an efficient and cost effective approach for the synthesis of long-cycle life and high-cyclability anodes.
