Natural Kelp (Laminaria japonica) Hydrogel with Anisotropic Mechanical Properties, Low Friction and Self-Cleaning for Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Dongnian Chen,Hui Yu,Jiajia Hao,Qiang Chen,Lin Zhu

Kelp is a natural hydrogel material, which has been widely used in food industry. However, as a natural material, its properties have not been well explored. In this work, the surface and mechanical properties of kelp were investigated. The surface of kelp exhibited superoleophobicity and a self-clean property. The friction coefficient (COF) of the kelp surface was also low (<0.1). Interestingly, kelp demonstrated anisotropic mechanical properties either with or without metal ions. The tensile strength and toughness of kelp along with the growth direction (H) were better than those at the direction vertical to the growth direction (V). The adsorption of metal ions would significantly enhance the mechanical properties and ionic conductivity. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) was assembled using kelp with NaCl, which showed excellent output performance (open-circuit voltage of 30 V, short-circuit current of 0.73 μA and charge transfer on contact of 10.5 nC). A writing tablet was prepared to use as the kelp-based self-powered tactile sensor. This work provides a new insight into natural kelp, which may be used as a renewable material.

Triboelectric Nanogenerators Based on Super-Stretchable Conductive Hydrogels with the Assistance of Deep-Learning for Handwriting Recognition

Kangshuai Li,Dongzhi Zhang,Hao Zhang,Dongyue Wang,Zhenyuan Xu,Haolin Cai,Hui Xia

Nowadays, wearable electronic devices are developing rapidly with the internet of things and human–computer interactions. However, there are problems such as low power, short power supply time, and difficulty in charging, leading to a limited range of practical applications. In this paper, a composite hydrogel composed of polyacrylamide, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets was developed, which formed a stable double-chain structure by hydrogen bonding. The configuration endows the hydrogel with excellent properties, such as high strength, strong stretchability, excellent electrical conductivity, and high strain sensitivity. Based on these characteristics, a flexible multifunctional triboelectric nanogenerator (PHM–TENG) was prepared using the hydrogel as a functional electrode. The nanogenerator can collect biomechanical energy and convert it to 183 V with a maximum power density of 78.3 mW/m2. It is worth noting that PHM–TENG can be applied as a green power source for driving miniature electronics. Also, it can be used as an auto-powered strain sensor that distinguishes letters, enabling monitoring under small strain conditions. This work is anticipated to provide an avenue for the development of new intelligent systems for handwriting recognition.

Natural Polysaccharide Film-Based Triboelectric Sensor for Fruit Transportation Collision Monitoring

Jianyu Su,Ya Gao,Yuan Yang,Penghui Fan,Zhenlong Zhou,Zhongxiang Wang,Xiaoyuan Zhang,Liming Fang

Transportation-induced damage to fresh produce is a big challenge in logistics. Current acceleration and pressure sensors for collision monitoring face issues of power dependency, high cost, and environmental concerns. Here, a self-powered and environmentally friendly triboelectric sensor has been developed to monitor fruit collisions in transportation packaging. Microcrystalline cellulose/chitosan and sodium alginate films were prepared as positive and negative tribo-layers to assemble a natural polysaccharide film-based triboelectric nanogenerator (NP-TENG). The NP-TENG’s electrical output was proportional to the structure parameters (contact surface roughness and separation gap of the tribo-layers) and the vibration factors (force and frequency) and exhibited excellent stability and durability (over 100,000 cycles under 13 N at 10 Hz). The high mechanical-to-electrical conversion efficiency (instantaneous areal power density of 9.6 mW/m2) and force sensitivity (2.2 V/N) enabled the NP-TENG to be a potential sensor for monitoring fresh produce collisions in packaging during logistics. Transportation simulation measurements of kiwifruits verified that the sensor’s electrical outputs increased with the vibration frequency and stacking layer while varying at different packaging locations. This study suggests that the NP-TENG can effectively monitor collision damage during fruit transportation, providing new insights into developing intelligent food packaging systems to reduce postharvest supply chain losses.

Flexible and stretchable triboelectric nanogenerator fabric for biomechanical energy harvesting and self-powered dual-mode human motion monitoring

Meng He,Wenwen Du,Yanmin Feng,Shijie Li,Wei Wang,Xiang Zhang,Aifang Yu,Lingyu Wan,Junyi Zhai

Simultaneous monitoring of human motion and collecting ambient energy are important for the development of personal healthcare monitoring and artificial intelligence. Here, a flexible and stretchable coaxial triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) yarn is designed and fabricated by using coil spring as the inner support layer and mechanoluminescent ZnS:Cu/PDMS composite as the outer friction layer. By weaving coaxial TENG yarns, or mix-weaving with other yarns, a multifunctional TENG fabric can be manufactured for energy harvesting external mechanical energy from human motion or ambient environment. More important, it can self-powered sense human motion in both electrical (through TENG) and optical (from mechanoluminescent ZnS:Cu/PDMS composite) methods. This work provides a new strategy for wearable TENG fabrics with dual-mode sensing and energy harvesting which have potential applications in long-term medical monitoring and human-machine interaction systems.

Perovskite quantum dot-based tandem triboelectric-solar cell for boosting the efficiency and rain energy harvesting

Jingbo Yuan,Xiya Yang,Duo Zheng,Jiangtao Guo,Weize Lin,Jiawei Liao,Yudi Wang,L. Vaillant-Roca,Jialong Duan,Qunwei Tang

Silicon (Si) solar cell efficiently convert solar energy into electricity under the sun illumination , but its inherent intermittent power generation due to diurnal and seasonal cycle has usually allowed for the requirement for alternative power sources. Owing to the abundance, diversity and availability, rain drop energy is one of the most promising green energy sources. Hence, hybrid energy harvesting could be a promising strategy of achieving preferential hybrid performances without sacrificing the advantages in individual devices. Herein, we proposed a hybrid solar and rain energy harvesting device featuring the integration of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) top-cell and a crystalline Si solar cell bottom-cell by laminating perovskite quantum dots-embedded polydimethylsiloxane composite film (PQDP) onto the Si solar cell, which endows enhanced electrical output performances under rainy days. To overcome the limitation of low external quantum efficiency (EQE) in the ultraviolet region of the Si solar cell, the PCE of the hybrid solar cell is significantly enhanced from 18.47% of bare Si solar cell to 20.16% owing to the anti-reflection effect of PQDP film and the down-conversion property of CsPbBr 3 QDs doped with Ce 3+ ions. Meanwhile, this hybrid solar cell presents excellent durability after continuous measurement over 7 days. This tandem hybrid solar cell provides a promising strategy to simultaneously scavenging the solar and rain energy and boosting the power conversion efficiency by introducing the perovskite QDs without affecting the efficiency of bare Si solar cell.

Gas-Sensing Study and Applications of Triboelectric Nanogenerator-Powered CuO-Modified CeO2 Nanomaterials for Ammonia Sensor at Room Temperature

Junsheng Ding,Yingang Gui,Hua Huang

Ammonia (NH3) is a common agricultural gas, and its accurate detection is critical to agricultural production. In this study, nano-CuO/CeO2composites were prepared to achieve a wide range of ammonia detection at room temperature. Characterization data verified the composite heterojunction structure of CuO/CeO2, which demonstrates an outstanding large specific surface area for ammonia detection. It provides more active sites for NH3molecules, which brings a very high response to ammonia (70.3% @100 ppm NH3), a large detection range (0.5–200 ppm NH3), and a fast response/recovery time (13 s/17 s @20 ppm NH3). Systematic testing showed that the nano-CuO/CeO2composites also exhibit excellent extended-term stability and selectivity. Further studies showed that the p-n heterojunction structure of CuO/CeO2allowed the composite to retain its gas-sensitive properties to ammonia, in addition to the improved ammonia-detection range of the composite based on the synergistic effect of these two materials. The mechanism of CuO/CeO2heterojunction nanocomposites towards ammonia detection was also elucidated from a microscopic perspective at the molecular level. Finally, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that can be driven by wind power has been prepared, upon which the feasibility of the combination of the TENG and the ammonia sensor to realize environmental monitoring was investigated.

Self-powered biosensing system driven by triboelectric nanogenerator for specific detection of Gram-positive bacteria

Congyu Wang,Peng Wang,Junhuan Chen,Liyang Zhu,Dun Zhang,Yi Wan,Shiyun Ai

Gram-positive bacterial concentration , such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) , is a crucial criterion for evaluating water quality and influencing human health, developing effective and specific detection of Gram-positive bacteria is important for prevention of their threats. In our proof-of-concept work, a self-powered biosensing system based on the vertical contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) was developed to specifically detect Gram-positive bacteria in solution. In the biosensing system, vancomycin was utilized to identify and capture Gram-positive bacterial cells via specific vancomycin-bacteria wall interactions, guanidine functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT-Arg) was adopted as signal amplification material due to its high electrical conductivity , and TENG was adopted as a stable voltage signal source. Thus, the self-powered biosensing system could specifically detect the Gram-positive bacteria in solution by determining the measured voltage variation of biosensor. It was proven that the self-powered biosensing system was applied to detect S. aureus (employed as a model) with a linear relationship, low limit of detection (2 × 10 3 CFU mL −1 ) and high selectivity. Moreover, a warning program of Labview was written in this work, and the warning program could convert the voltage signal into visual signal for convenient observation. This work provides a design concept for self-powered biosensing system with TENG, and by replacing the molecular probes, the system can facilitate the application of TENG in many relevant fields, such as environmental pollution, iatrogenic diseases and microbiological corrosion .

A high-performance transparent and flexible triboelectric nanogenerator based on hydrophobic composite films

Gui-Zhong Li,Gui-Gen Wang,Ya-Wei Cai,Na Sun,Fei Li,Hai-Ling Zhou,Hai-Xu Zhao,Xiao-Nan Zhang,Jie-Cai Han,Ya Yang

The modern portable and wearable electronic devices have been put forward a claim on flexibility, transparency and lightweight. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has attracted great attention as basic component of independent power source due to its outstanding characteristics. Here, a simple and efficient approach was demonstrated to modify poly-(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) in order to both improve the output electrical performance of TENG and optimize its hydrophobility as well. The 4 cm 2 TENG consisting of PDMS-perfluorododecyl trichlorosilane (FDTS) friction layer and copper nanowires (Cu NWs)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) electrode, exhibits high output voltage and large transfer charge quantity of 125 V and 80 nC, where the corresponding electrical performances are larger with several times than that of pristine PDMS-based TENG. A voltage of 105.8V can be obtained even under the ambient condition with high humidity of ~60%. The improvements are attributed to the reaction between FDTS and PDMS, introducing fluorine element to absorb more electrons and increasing dielectric constant. Moreover, the fabricated TENG remains high visible transmittance (70.1%) and good flexibility as energy sources which can satisfy the demands of portable and wearable electronic devices.

Integrated All-Fiber Electronic Skin toward Self-Powered Sensing Sports Systems

Yapeng Shi,Xuelian Wei,Kaimeng Wang,Dongdong He,Zhihao Yuan,Jiahui Xu,Zhiyi Wu,Zhong Lin Wang

The development of wearable electronic skins (E-skins) requires devices with high flexibility, breathability, and antibacterial activity, as in sports sensing technology. Here, we report a flexible, breathable, and antibacterial triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based E-skin for self-powered sensing in volleyball reception statistics and analytics, which is fabricated by sandwiching a silver nanowire (Ag NW) electrode between a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) sensing layer and a poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan (PVA/CS) substrate. Benefiting from an outstanding breathability of 10.32 kg m–2 day–1 and biocidal properties of CS and Ag NW, the E-skin offers excellent thermal-moisture comfort and a remarkable antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. A pressure sensitivity of 0.3086 V kPa–1 is demonstrated in the sensing range of 6.65–19.21 kPa. Besides, a volleyball reception statistical and analytical system is further developed based on a 2 × 3 E-skin array. According to this work, the integration of wearable electronic devices with self-powered sensors may expand practical applications in sports.

2D Bismuthine/PDMS Composite Membrane as a Potential Electrode Material for High-Output Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Minmin Wang,Qinglin Chen,Wenwu Zhao,Yanfeng Tang

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with great potential in the field of energy collection and self-powered sensing have attracted great attention. However, most of the TENGs are limited by their unsatisfactory electrical output performance and mechanical properties in utilized as wearable and flexible microelectronic devices. Herein, a flexible single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator composed of bismuthene (Bi-ene) nanosheets embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film is proposed. The Bi-ene nanosheets embedded in the PDMS film act as micro-capacitors, which enable the Bi-ene@PDMS film to withstand high voltage and store more electrical energy. As a result, the Bi-ene@PDMS based TENG exhibits 26 times more power density than that of the pure PDMS based TENG at the optimum Bi-ene content. Moreover, the prepared TENG based e-skin can meet the practical needs of power supply, motion sensing, and tactile sensing. The results can provide fundamental insights for the design of high-performance flexible TENG.
