In this research, a novel interfacial enhanced thin film composite nanofiltration (TFC NF) membrane with nail-fixed like surface structure and wave line like cross-section structure, good permeability and superior interfacial stability was prepared by interfacial polymerization (IP) on one-step in-situ aminated polyvinyl chloride (APVC) support layer. The effects of amination agent (triethylenetetramine, TETA) content on the support layers and the effects of the support layers with different degrees of amination on the performance of the TFC NF membranes were studied comprehensively. Furthermore, the interfacial bonding strength of the TFC NF membrane was explored by the inverse permeation test. It was concluded from the results that higher TETA content in casting solution led to the APVC membrane to form macroporous surface structure, thinner top skin layer and larger mean pore size. Meanwhile, more TETA molecules were grafted onto the PVC chains through nucleophilic substitution to participate in IP in a synergistic manner. Accordingly, the corresponding TFC NF membrane formed a nail-fixed like surface structure similar to semi-free-standing polyamide (PA) layer and wave line like cross-section structure with thinner and denser active layer. The water flux of the TFC NF membrane prepared with the optimized APVC membrane as the substrate membrane was increased by 395% at 0.6 MPa compared with the TFC NF membrane prepared with PVC membrane as the substrate membrane, while Na 2 SO 4 rejection did not sacrifice and increased by 3.48%, which manifested that unique structure was favorable to speed up the water transmission and effectively conquered the trade-off effect. Moreover, the representative TFC NF membrane prepared with optimized APVC membrane as the substrate membrane with strong covalent bond between support layer and active layer demonstrated superior interfacial stability in the short-term circulating inverse permeation test.

Chitosan (CS) membranes have been widely applied in water/ethanol separation via membrane-based pervaporation, but a bottleneck in the practical application always exists due to their severe swelling behavior in aqueous solution and consequently low permeation flux due to the large membrane thickness. Here, thin film composite (TFC) hollow fiber (HF) membrane with an in-situ-crosslinked ultrathin CS selective layer is developed via multiple supramolecular interaction-crosslinking strategy for efficient water/ethanol separation via pervaporation. With Fe 3+ -phytic acid (PhA) complex pre-deposited on the substrate, the subsequently introduced CS selective layer is in-situ crosslinked via multiple supramolecular interactions, including coordination, electrostatic, and hydrogen bonding interactions. By varying the cycle number of Fe 3+ /PhA assembly and the species of employed organophosphorus acid, the anti-swelling properties of the resultant TFC CS membrane is enhanced and the separation performance is maximized. The optimal TFC-CS-Fe 2 PhA 2 membrane with two cycles of Fe 3+ /PhA assembly has a selective layer thickness of 60 n m and a corresponding ultrahigh flux of 2.87 kg/m 2 h, coupled with a permeate water concentration of 99.5 wt% and good long-term stability for the dehydration of 85 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 50 °C. The supramolecular interaction-crosslinking presented in this work provides an efficient and promising strategy for the construction of TFC CS membrane with excellent anti-swelling property and superior separation performance.

In this study, solvent-resistant polyamide (PA) thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were successfully prepared based on an ultrasolvent-resistant oxidized poly (arylene sulfide sulfone) (O-PASS) substrate. The effects of different substrates on interfacial polymerization (IP) process were systematically studied. The O-PASS-TFC membranes were activated to different degrees by a controlled activation process using the mixture solvent of DMF/H 2 O with different ratio of DMF, the solubility power can be designed by adjusting DMF volume fraction, as the activation solvent. The membrane followed pure DMF treatment was found to have the excellent performance: the surface morphology of TFC membrane was activated to smooth and high negative charged, yield nanofiltration (NF) performance with a solution permeance of 8.82 LMH bar −1 (~621 % increase) and a pure water permeance (PWP) of 11.59 LMH bar −1 (~607 % increase), Na 2 SO 4 rejection maintained above 98.7 %. On the other hands, the same O-PASS-TFC membrane activated with solvent mixture volume ratio of DMF/H 2 O = 0.5 exhibited enhanced Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 99 %, with greater solution permeance of 3.01 LMH bar −1 (~212 % increase). The correlations between the different activation treatment-membrane structure-separation properties of O-PASS-TFC membranes with different solvent activation degrees were investigated in detail. In this work, the ultrasolvent-resistant property of O-PASS substrate was combined to regulate its TFC membrane structure, and then further to endow the TFC membrane with multiple excellent filtration performance by fully utilizing the solvent activation effect of DMF. Through this strategy, it supplies a facile and promising route for preparation of high efficiency TFC membrane.

Polyamide (PA) chemistry-based nanofiltration (NF) membranes have an important role in the field of seawater desalination and wastewater reclamation. Achieving an ultrathin and defect-free active layer via precisely controlled interfacial polymerization (IP) is an effective routine to improve the separation efficiencies of NF membranes. Herein, the morphologies and chemical structures of the thin-film composite (TFC) NF membranes were accurately regulated by tailoring the interfacial reaction temperature during the IP process. This strategy was achieved by controlling the temperature (−15, 5, 20, 35, and 50°) of the oil-phase solutions. The structural compositions, morphological variations, and separation features of the fabricated NF membranes were studied in detail. In addition, the formation mechanisms of the NF membranes featuring different PAs were also proposed and discussed. The temperature-assisted IP (TAIP) method greatly changed the compositions of the resultant PA membranes. A very smooth and thin PA film was obtained for the NF membranes fabricated at a low interfacial temperature; thus, a high 19.2 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 of water permeance and 97.7% of Na2SO4 rejection were observed. With regard to the NF membranes obtained at a high interfacial temperature, a lower water permeance and higher salt rejection with fewer membrane defects were achieved. Impressively, the high interfacial temperature-assisted NF membranes exhibited uniform coffee-ring-like surface morphologies. The special surface-featured NF membrane showed superior separation for selected heavy metals. Rejections of 93.9%, 97.9%, and 87.7% for Cu2+, Mn2+, and Cd2+ were observed with the optimized membrane. Three cycles of fouling tests indicated that NF membranes fabricated at low temperatures exhibited excellent antifouling behavior, whereas a high interface temperature contributed to the formation of NF membranes with high fouling tendency. This study provides an economical, facile, and universal TAIP strategy for tailoring the performances of TFC PA membranes for environmental water treatment.

To effectively separate Mg 2+ and Li + from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio salt lake brine, positively charged thin film composite polyamide (TFC-PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared by the interface polymerization involving polyethyleneimine (PEI) with benzenetricarbonyl chloride (TMC). In this work, the structures and performances of PEI based TFC-PA NF membrane prepared on polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration substrates from the normal interface polymerization process PSF(NIP), was compared with those on the same substrates from the reverse-phase interface polymerization (RIP) process PSF(RIP), and those on polyethylene substrates from RIP process PE(RIP). Results showed that PSF(RIP) showed improved Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor S Li/Mg from PSF(NIP) with an increased surface positive charge, but with greatly reduced water flux values due to reduced surface roughness , increased surface hydrophobicity , and decreased MWCO Stokes pore radius. PE(RIP) NF membrane showed not only higher Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor S Li/Mg , but also higher water flux values due to increased surface roughness, decreased PA cross-linking degree, reduced PA separation layer thickness, and increased MWCO Stokes pore radius. PE(RIP) NF membrane also showed high rejection rates to a variety of divalent metal salts with high separation factors S Li/Mg of 40–49, high brine permeability values of 10.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , and excellent chemical and operational stability.

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) offers an energy-efficient alternative to conventional thermal distillation processes for organic solvent separations. However, the fabrication of polymeric OSN membranes with adequate chemical stability in strong polar aprotic solvents remains a remarkable challenge. In this work, chemically robust polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) OSN membranes were fabricated by utilizing an innovative chemical modification of polyimide (PI) nanofiber substrate via one-step crosslinking and thermal cyclodehydration of terephthalic hydrazide (TPDH). The crosslinking and cyclodehydration reaction mechanisms were thoroughly elucidated and the effects of TPDH loading and thermal treatment conditions on solvent resistance and pore structure of the resulting TPDH/PI nanofiber substrates as well as the formation of the polyamide selective layer were systematically studied. The resulting TFC membranes show excellent stability in polar aprotic solvents (i.e., DMF, DMAC, and NMP), and a high DMF permeance of 9.4 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 was achieved with a 99.8% rejection to Rose Bengal at 2.0 bar. The outstanding long-term performance stability revealed the robust structure of the developed TFC OSN membranes. This work demonstrates a facile strategy to address the chemical stability limitations of TFC OSN membranes through a multifaceted yet generalizable approach of chemical crosslinking and thermal cyclodehydration. We believe this strategy can be broadly applied to different substrates, enabling TFC membranes to address a wide variety of unmet OSN needs.

A novel copolymer architecture integrating anti-fouling, bactericidal, and fouling-release functions has been developed for thin-film composite (TFC) membranes to effectively address biofouling concerns. The approach involves growing three functional polymers from membrane surface in sequence. The first polymer has low surface energy, the second has bactericidal properties, and the third has a strong hydration capacity. The presence of the multifunctional layer significantly increased water permeability, which is due to the swelling property of the functional polymer. The extended Derjauguin-Landau-Verway-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory analysis shows that the introduction of the multifunctional copolymer architecture increased membrane-foulant total interaction energy ( Δ G T O T ) from 22.6 to 35.6 mJ/m 2 , indicating promising anti-adhesive properties. These properties have been confirmed by an 86 % decrease in E. coli adsorption during static bacteria assay. In addition, the fluoropolymer in modified membrane enhances its self-cleaning ability, which has been verified in static fouling-release assays where the TFC membrane can release attached cells under gentle agitation. Our long-term biofouling experiments further confirmed the superior multi-defense properties of the modified TFC membrane. Comparatively, the multifunctional membrane significantly reduced flux decline by 58 % and TOC biomass by 69 % during the dynamic biofouling process, and notably enhanced flux recovery of ∼97 % after cleaning. Our new copolymer architecture highlights the potential to enhance the efficiency and longevity of TFC membranes in a variety of applications.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent form of hair loss, which significantly affects both aesthetics and quality of life. Hair regeneration in AGA requires the transition of hair follicles from the telogen phase to the anagen phase, alongside a healthy microenvironment, analogous to seed germination, where breaking dormancy and providing fertile soil are essential. In this context, we propose that targeting the "seed-and-soil" model by activating autophagy in hair follicles (seeds) and alleviating oxidative stress in the hair follicle microenvironment (soil) could be an effective strategy for AGA treatment. Through network pharmacology and cell-based experiments, we identified curcumin (Cur) as a potential agent capable of activating autophagy and alleviating oxidative stress—both critical processes for hair follicle regeneration. To facilitate biomedical application, we developed a novel nanoparticle formulation, TFC, achieved by self-assembling Cur and tannic acid with Fe 3+ via metal coordination. TFC nanoparticles demonstrated excellent colloidal stability, high Cur loading capacity (52 %), and potent antioxidant properties. In vitro studies showed that TFC effectively scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) and activated autophagy in human dermal papilla cells, offering significant protection against oxidative stress. In an AGA mouse model, TFC delivered via microneedles accelerated hair growth, promoted hair follicle proliferation, and enhanced angiogenesis, with superior efficacy compared to minoxidil and minimal side effects. This study suggests that Cur-loaded TFC, by targeting oxidative stress and autophagy in hair follicle cells, represents a promising novel approach for AGA treatment.

A post-treatment strategy, involving immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution, was found to be specifically effective in improving the reverse osmosis (RO) performance of polyethylene (PE) based thin film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes prepared from reverse phase interface polymerization (RIP) processes. RIP processes produced abundant amine groups on the PA surfaces to allow the formation of abundant PA-N(H)Cl intermediates, while the inertness of the PE substrates preserved them for self-coupling into azo linkages, -N N-. Due to the formation of the azo cross-linking structure, the salt rejection rate of the PA layer was enhanced, while the degradation of part of the -C( O)-NH- groups increased surface ionic groups at pH 8, improving water permeance. Experiments were conducted to determine the most suitable concentration, pH value, and treatment time of the sodium hypochlorite solution. Treatment with a sodium hypochlorite solution at 500 ppm and pH 8 for 4 min increased the permeance of the PA/PE TFC membrane from 1.59 ± 0.02 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 to 1.63 ± 0.03 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , while the salt rejection rate increased from 98.64 ± 0.06% to 99.24 ± 0.08%. The membrane also maintained good operational stability, antifouling property, and enhanced alkaline stability.

Nowadays, attempts emerge in an endless stream to explore an efficient active interlayer to break the “trade-off” relationship between permeability and rejection of conventional thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. Biochar, which is often used as an economically efficient material in soil remediation and wastewater treatment, however, is usually neglected in the application of TFC membrane. This study fabricated a series of polydopamine (PDA)/TFC membranes incorporated with different concentrations of ball-milled biochar (BMBC) interlayer by the combination of conventional interfacial polymerization and bar coating method and employed them in antibiotics wastewater removal. Results indicated that water permeability of the optimized membrane (PDA/TFC-2) improved nearly two-fold (32 ± 1.8 LMHB (L.m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) versus 18.6 ± 1.6 LMHB for control membrane), and the rejection rates were also the highest (91.9% for chlortetracycline, 90.3% for tetracycline, 81.8% for Ciprofloxacin and 91.3% for oxytetracycline). Furthermore, the fouled PDA/TFC-2 membrane could be easily regenerated by NaOH washing and remained ~70.6% permeability flux of that of fresh membrane even after five times washing, while the rejection rate was still more than 60%. The findings of our study not only provide a promising material for the separation of antibiotic wastewater but also give a new sight towards the application of biochar in wastewater treatment.

A secondary pore-forming method for improving support surface porosity to enhance the flux of TFC RO membrane was proposed. With this method, well-dispersed SiO 2 nanospheres were used for preparing polysulfone (PSf)/SiO 2 nanocomposite supports via immersion precipitation, and then the supports were treated by a hot NaOH solution. The PSf/SiO 2 nanocomposite supports prepared by this method can experience two pore formation processes, which include the leaching out of the SiO 2 nanospheres during immersion precipitation (the first pore formation process) and the removal of those SiO 2 nanospheres embedded in the support surface by alkali treatment after the solidification of support (the second pore formation process). These two pore formation processes were studied. The results showed that (1) these two pore formation processes occurred during the preparation of PSf/SiO 2 nanocomposite support, (2) the secondary pore-forming method was better than the immersion precipitation method for improving support surface porosity and (3) the support surface porosity was improved at most 291% by the secondary pore-forming method. TFC RO membranes were fabricated on pure supports, nanocomposite supports experiencing the first pore formation process only and nanocomposite supports experiencing two pore formation processes via interfacial polymerization, respectively. The brackish water desalination performance of the TFC RO membranes was evaluated using 2000 ppm NaCl solutions under the condition of 1.55 MPa transmembrane pressure. The influence of support surface porosity on the flux and rejection of TFC RO membrane was firstly analyzed by experimental approach. The results showed that improving the support surface porosity was beneficial for the improvement of the flux and rejection of TFC RO membrane. The flux and rejection of the TFC RO membranes fabricated on PSf/SiO 2 nanocomposite supports experiencing two pore formation processes were improved compared to those fabricated on the other two supports. At an optimal condition, the flux was improved obviously with the rejection increasing simultaneously compared to the TFC RO membranes fabricated on the pure supports: a 55.4% increase in flux from 35.4 to 55.0 L/(m 2 *h) with an increase in rejection from 98.74% to 99.10%.

To explore the application of forward osmosis (FO) technology in the organic solvent recovery field, we prepared a new solvent-resistant triple layer thin film composite (TFC) membrane on the PI (polyimide) substrate. The deep eutectic supramolecular polymers (DESPs) interlayer was constructed on the substrate to improve the separation performance and solvent resistance. DESPs interlayer was formed by mixing and heating with cyclodextrin as the hydrogen bond acceptor andL-malic acid as the hydrogen bond donor. The chemical changes, surface property and morphology of the composite membrane with DESPs interlayer were characterized. The separation performance and stability of the triple layer composite membrane in organic solvent FO were studied. For the monascorubrin-ethanol system, the permeation flux of TFC/DESPs5-PI membrane could reach 9.51 LMH while the rejection rate of monascorubrin was 98.4% (1.0 M LiCl/ethanol as draw solution), which was better than the pristine membrane. Therefore, this solvent-resistant triple layer composite FO membrane has good potential for the recovery of organic solvents. Keywords:organic solvent forward osmosis;composite membrane;interlayer;ethanol;monascorubrin
