MXene/TPU Hybrid Fabrics Enable Smart Wound Management and Thermoresponsive Drug Delivery

Yue Cheng,Mengfei Zhu,Mengqiao Chi,Yulin Lai,Bing Li,Rui Qian,Zhongrong Chen,Gang Zhao

Thermoresponsive wound dressings with real-time monitoring and on-demand drug delivery have gained significant attention recently. However, such smart systems with stable temperature adjustment and drug release control are still lacking. Here, a novel smart fabric is designed for wound management with thermoresponsive drug delivery and simultaneously temperature monitoring. The triple layers of the fabrics are composed of the drug-loaded thermoresponsive nanofiber film, the MXene-optimized joule heating film, and the FPCB control chip. The precise and stable temperature stimulation can be easily achieved by applying a low voltage (0–4 V) to the heating film, achieving the temperature control ranging from 25 to 130 °C. And the temperature of the wound region can be monitored and adjusted in real time, demonstrating an accurate and low-voltage joule heating capability. Based on that, the drug-loaded film achieved precise thermoresponsive drug release and obtained significant antibacterial effects in vitro. The in vivo experiments also proved the hybrid fabric system with a notable antibacterial effect and accelerated wound healing process (about 30% faster than the conventional gauze group).

Study on the modification of HMX/TPU composites with metal-phenolic network

Wenzheng Xu,Junyi Wang,Xiaolong Chang,Yulong Yang,Leyang Zhao,Shuying Lan,Ningxin Ma,Jiangtao Xing

Rapid and facile self-assembly coatings play a crucial role in surface functionalization of materials. In this study, a safe, fast, and environmentally friendly method is proposed to form a metal-phenolic network (MPN) through the assembly of gallic acid (GA) and iron ions (Fe 3+ ), which is used for the in situ polymerization coating of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5-7-tetrazacyclooctane (HMX). The surface of the modified HMX crystals become visibly roughened. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was coated on the surface of modified HMX by water suspension method to form HMX@MPN@TPU double-layer core-shell energetic composite material. Compared with the raw material HMX, the β-δ phase transition temperature of the double-layer core-shell structure composite increased by 12.36°C, the impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity decreased, and the compressive strength increased by 38%, which effectively improved its mechanical properties. Highlights It has been demonstrated that metal-phenolic networks can self-assemble on the surface of crystals. A water suspension method was employed to prepare energetic material powder into a polymer-bonded explosive (PBX). The modified PBX showed significant improvements in various properties, indicating that metal-phenolic networks can serve as excellent modifying materials.

Cellulose Nanocrystals-mediated Phase Morphology of PLLA/TPU Blends for 3D Printing

Wu Xiao,Liu Yun-Xiao,Wu Hai-Peng,Wu Hao,Wang Hai-Jun,Duan Yong-Xin,Zhang Jian-Ming

Incorporation of nanoparticles into polymer blend to obtain finely dispersed morphology has been considered as an effective strategy to prepare nanocomposites. Owing to the renewable and degradable characters, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been proposed to tailor the phase morphology of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) blend for producing high-performance fused deposition modeling (FDM) consumables. However, the main challenge associated with the ternary systems is the dispersion of the highly hydrophilic CNCs in non-polar PLLA blend by industrial melt blending without involving solution. Herein, with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) modified CNCs powder (a mixture of PVAc grafted from CNCs and PVAc homopolymer latex), the selective dispersion of CNCs in PLLA has been achieved by simple melt processing of PLLA/TPU (polyether polyurethane)/CNCs blend. This results in the ultra-fine TPU droplets at nanoscale in PLLA and improves the melt processibility of composites in FDM due to the decreased viscosity ratio of the dispersed/matrix and the enhanced melt elasticity of PLLA. Combined with the intensive shear and continuous stretch effect during FDM, aligned TPU nanofibers (TNFs) were in situ formed along the elongational flow direction during deposition, which in turn contributed to the improvement of PLLA/TPU/CNCs with 5 wt% filler loading in tensile ductility by 418%, inter-layer adhesion strength and notched impact toughness by 261% and 210%, respectively, as well as achieved good dimensional accuracy and very fine surface quality.

Sandwiched-resistive sensors based on the 3D printing of TPU/CNTs–ILs

Pan Hongwei,Wang Zhaokun,Wei Zhaoyang,Zhang Jiaping,Xu Minghan,Zong Chengzhong,Cao Lan,Wang Qingfu

In this study, a TPU/CNTs–ILs flexible sensor with a sandwich structure is prepared by a combination of coating and 3D printing method. First, to promote the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids (ILs) are used as modifier. Two layers of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) filaments are printed on the bottom plate via 3D printing and coated with a layer of CNTs–ILs as a conductive layer. Finally, two layers of TPU are printed to encapsulate the conductive layer. It is revealed that the printed TPU/CNTs–ILs flexible sensor exhibited a sensitive resistance response at small and large strains (GF value of 20 and 440 at strains of 5% and 50%, respectively) while retaining high mechanical strength (tensile strength of more than 30 MPa and 600% elongation at break). In addition, the fabricated flexible sensor still displayed good resistance response after being cyclically stretched in the range of 0–50% strain for more than 400 s. Comparing the signal response of different vocal cord vibration frequencies and loudness, it is shown that the flexible device with high sensitivity in sensing can monitor human motion behavior, indicating the TPU/CNTs–ILs flexible sensor with a sandwich structure has excellent application prospects as wearable electronic components. From anti-counterfeit polymer materials to dual-mode visualization sensor based on triboelectric nanogenerator

Yating An,Lin Peng,Yunjia Cui,Ce Zhang,Qiuxiang Yang,Jiandan Liang,Ning Wang,Xia Cao

With the rapid development of flexible electronics and intelligent sensing technologies, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have garnered significant attention in the field of human-computer interaction due to their ability to convert human mechanical energy into visible light. However, traditional TENG devices often face limitations such as single functionality, low transparency, and insufficient mechanical properties, which hinder their further application in high-end fields. To address these challenges, this study proposes a simple and low-cost fabrication method, utilizing a solution-drying process to prepare ZnS:Cu@TPU films. The morphology, structure, light transmittance, and mechanical properties of the films were systematically characterized. The films exhibited excellent tensile properties (with a maximum strain of 1300% and a corresponding tensile strength of 2.5   MPa) and high light transmittance. Additionally, the films displayed different colors under ultraviolet or infrared light irradiation. Based on the ZnS:Cu@TPU films, a contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator (ZnS:Cu@TPU-TENG) was constructed, demonstrating a high output voltage of 240   V and remarkable stability. Furthermore, the ZnS:Cu@TPU-TENG can convert touch information into both visible light signals and electrical signals, enabling real-time touch imaging and handwriting pressure sensing, thereby functioning as a dual-mode visual sensor. This study highlights the immense potential of ZnS:Cu@TPU-TENG in high-end applications, particularly in the fields of intelligent sensing, flexible electronics, anti-counterfeiting technologies, and interactive human-machine interfaces.

Nature-inspired wood-like TPU/CB aerogels for high performance flexible strain sensors

Wang Guanyu,Yang Yadong,Cao Wenzhe,Wan Caichao

Strain sensors based on porous conductive polymers (CPCs) have garnered growing research interest for their potential applications in motion detection, healthcare, human–computer interaction, and artificial intelligence. However, the complexity of CPC processing makes it difficult to achieve the controlled design of microscopic porous structures, leading to simple and random porous structures, thus limiting their further use in the field of pressure sensing. This paper presents a strain sensor with a high-performance, wood-like structure composed of flexible conductive carbon black/plastic polyurethane foam (BWCT) using a bidirectional freeze casting process. The results show that, compared with conventional random freezing and unidirectional freezing, the bidirectional freeze casting process can effectively realize multiscale control of the composite structure, which results in a good laminar porous structure of the prepared BWCT. This parallel laminar structure not only contributes to the layered transfer of stresses but also avoids the local concentration of stresses. At the same time, it significantly increases the directional electrical conduction ability, which results in high sensing stability performance. In particular, the BWCT sensors had a wide detection range (80%), a lower limit of detection (0.2%), rapid response and relaxation times (200 ms), as well as exceptional durability (>2000 cycles). Furthermore, the BWCT was integrated into a wearable sensor to monitor various human motions, including arm bending, squatting, and walking, demonstrating reliable detection performance. Altogether, the BWCT sensors are promising in expanding the application but also offer guidance for designing high-performance wearable strain sensors.

Microwave-assisted scalable CNTs/TPU yarns for highly durable and sensitive wearable sensors

Tong Zhang,Mingxuan Zhai,Minghui Zhao,Xingyu Ma,Zhiyuan wang,Lisha Wang,Yijian Liu,Da Chen

Elastic conductive yarn, with its soft, stretchable, conformable, and weavable properties, is an ideal material for wearable strain sensors. However, conventional rigid conductive coatings often exhibit poor interfacial bonding with highly stretchable polymer matrices, resulting in limited stretchability, unstable conductivity, and poor durability. Based on this, a microwave-assisted anchored porous CNTs/TPU yarn was proposed as a highly sensitive and durable stretchable sensor. The yarns with microcrack structures were fabricated using simple and scalable wet spinning and pre-stretching techniques, followed by microwave-assisted embedding or anchoring of CNTs onto the TPU yarn surface to enhance sensor durability and usability. The sensor exhibits exceptional performance, including a broad detection range (0–200 %), high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 1370.84), rapid response/recovery times (250 ms/260 ms), and reliable human motion signal monitoring. Importantly, the microwave-anchored yarn shows reliable stability over 15,000 cycles, with durability at least 10 times greater than unanchored yarn. Furthermore, the yarn exhibits excellent water resistance (withstanding 20 washes), making it suitable for underwater electronic applications. The proposed fabrication strategy combines simplicity, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, presenting a viable pathway for manufacturing next-generation durable smart textiles for wearable sensing, soft robotics, and aquatic electronic systems.

Synthesis and modification of non-isocyanate thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from recycled waste electrolytes

Xiaolong Li,Haiyue Wang,Liying Guo,Ruibo Wang,Zhijiong Wu

To realize green, high-value recycling of spent lithium-ion battery electrolytes and avoid isocyanate-based polyurethane toxicity, this study developed a non-isocyanate route for the green synthesis of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) via waste utilization. The low-boiling electrolyte-derived substances reacted with aromatic diamines as hard-segment diamino carboxylate precursors, while the high-boiling components condensed with dimethyl succinate (DMSu) to yield four hydroxyl-terminated polyethylene succinate (PES) prepolymers (Mη: 518.26, 1007.98, 1534.77, and 2023.62 g mol−1) by adjusting the reaction time. A green catalyst system consisting of 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), and sodium methoxide (2 : 2 : 1) produced eight unmodified non-isocyanate TPUs, with the PES-2-based sample showing the best overall performance despite its insufficient tensile strength. Orthogonal experiments using ethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,4-cyclohexanediol, and renewable isosorbide (ISB) as chain extenders optimized the modification process, generating high-performance products 1,8-TPU-17 and 1,4-TPU-18. Characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, 1H/13C NMR, GPC, DSC, TGA, universal testing machine, DMA, and Materials Studio simulations, TPU had the expected structure, including Tg values of −19.36 to −20.56 °C, Td,5% values of 184.09 to 253.64 °C, tensile strength values of 16.31 to 17.36 MPa, and elongation at break values of 438% to 451%. Isosorbide boosted chain rigidity, cohesive energy, and hydrogen bond density, with “O–H⋯OC” bonds supporting performance improvement. This work combines waste recycling and green polymer synthesis, offering eco-friendly and industrially scalable solutions.

Huiqiao Xu,Kaijun Wang,Yunping Li,Jing Wang,Jiale Wu,Jiangfeng Mou,Rui Chen,Yafei Wang,Xinyue Wang,Jin Hu

To overcome the challenges of insufficient flexibility and limited absorption performance in conventional electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers, this study synthesized a flexible ternary composite composed of EGaIn/TPU/Fe 3 O 4 via ultrasonic dispersion and magnetic stirring encapsulation. Due to the synergistic interaction between the liquid metal conductive network, Fe 3 O 4 magnetic loss units, and the elastic TPU matrix, the composite simultaneously exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility and EMW absorption. With 5 vol% Fe 3 O 4 loading, the composite achieves a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −41.4 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 2.25 GHz at 1.5 mm, while maintaining outstanding mechanical properties (including tensile strength of 10.9 MPa, elongation at break of 658.7%, and elastic modulus of 3.56 MPa). This “conductive-magnetic-flexible” synergistic design provides valuable guidance for the developing of next-generation flexible stealth coatings and wearable electromagnetic shielding materials. Highlights Conductive-magnetic-flexible design is enabled by EGaIn/Fe 3 O 4 /TPU composites. Composites exhibit strong mechanical stability and wearable properties. The synergistic EGaIn/Fe 3 O 4 /TPU structure achieves excellent MA performance.

Strong and Tough TPU Fibers with Orientedly Aligned CNTs Reinforced by Amorphous ZrO2

Li Yangbei,Liu Shaojia,Zhao Hewei,Guo Lin

High strength and high toughness are vital for fibers’ engineering applications, but are hard to simultaneously achieve. Herein, we synthesize a carbon nanotube(CNT)-thermoplastic polyurethanes(TPU) fiber reinforced by an amorphous ZrO 2 layer through the wet-spinning method. The amorphous ZrO 2 layer is in-situ grown on the surface of CNT and the hybrid nanowires are orientedly aligned with TPU to form the ternary fiber. The fiber possesses an excellent combination of high strength(84.6 MPa) and toughness(126.7 MJ/m 3 ), which is outstanding when compared with previously reported CNT-TPU fibers. The pull-out of nanowires attributed to the oriented alignment structure and the enhanced interface and restriction of deformation obtained from the amorphous ZrO 2 layer are considered as the primary strengthening and toughening mechanisms. We anticipate that our fiber synthesis strategy gives a new path to design strong and tough fibers.

Effects of a new compatibilizer on the mechanical properties of TPU/PEBA blends

Xin-Zhu Wang,Jing-Wen Wang,Hou-Qing Wang,Guo-Chao Zhuang,Jian-Bao Yang,Ying-Jie Ma,Yang Zhang,Hua Ren

In this work, to improve the mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polyether-block-amide elastomer (PEBA) was used to modify it through a blending method. Due to the low compatibility of the two, a polyurethane with one end blocked with an isocyanate group and one end blocked with two epoxy groups was prepared as a compatibilizer, named as E-PU-I. And a series of TPU/PEBA blends with different components were prepared using a torque rheometer, and the effects of E-PU-I on the microstructure, phase interface interaction, rheological properties and mechanical properties of the blends were investigated. It proves that E-PU-I improves the compatibility between TPU and PEBA, resulting in more uniform dispersion of PEBA in TPU and smaller particle size, thus improving the overall performance of the blends. In addition, when the critical E-PU-I content is around 3.2 parts, the mechanical properties of the blends have been significantly improved.

Sustained release of brimonidine from BRI@SR@TPU implant for treatment of glaucoma

Yujin Zhao,Chang Huang,Zhutian Zhang,Jiaxu Hong,Jianjiang Xu,Xinghuai Sun,Jianguo Sun

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide, and reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only factor that can be interfered to delay disease progression. As the first line and preferred method to treat glaucoma, eye drops have many shortcomings, such as low bioavailability, poor patient compliance, and unsustainable therapeutic effect. In this study, a highly efficient brimonidine (BRI) silicone rubber implant (BRI@SR@TPU implant) has been designed, prepared, characterized, and administrated for sustained relief of IOP to treat glaucoma. The in vitro BRI release from BRI@SR@TPU implants shows a sustainable release profile for up to 35 d, with decreased burst release and increased immediate drug concentration. The carrier materials are not cytotoxic to human corneal epithelial cells and conjunctival epithelial cells, and show good biocompatibility, which can be safely administrated into rabbit’s conjunctival sac. The BRI@SR@TPU implant sustainably released BRI and effectively reduced IOP for 18 d (72 times) compared to the commercial BRI eye drops (6 h). The BRI@SR@TPU implant is thus a promising noninvasive platform product for long-term IOP-reducing in patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
