Trap-assisted recombination loss in the cathode buffer layers (CBLs) is detrimental to the electron extraction process and severely restricts the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a novel organic–inorganic hybrid film composed of zinc oxide (ZnO) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8, 8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) is designed to fill the intrinsic charge traps of ZnO-based CBLs by doping F4TCNQ for high-performance inverted OSCs. Thus, constructed ZnO:F4TCNQ hybrid film exhibits enhanced surface hydrophobicity and adjustable energy levels, providing favorable interfacial condition for electron extraction process. Consequently, trap-assisted recombination loss in the CBLs was efficiently suppressed, leading to the significantly improved fill factor and PCEs of both fullerene- and non-fullerene-based OSCs using the ZnO:F4TCNQ hybrid CBLs. This work illustrates a convenient organic acceptor doping approach to suppress the internal charge traps of traditional inorganic CBLs, which will shed new light on the fabrication of high-performance CBLs with facile electron extraction processes in inverted OSC devices.

Most photochromic ceramics can back up post-irradiation to achieve color state transition. Unfortunately, color recovery usually requires exposure of material to external physical fields (such as light and heat), which severely limits the application as a convenient energy building material such as smart windows. Here, we report a kind of sodium niobate translucent ceramics whose photochromic effect can be completely self-recoverable without any external physical field stimulation. Based on the analysis of time-response transmittance, up-conversion emission spectra and thermoluminescence spectra, the behavior of carrier migration and trap capture/release in the process of self-recovery photochromic reaction has been proposed. It is believed that the emergence of intermediate trap level is an important factor to produce this spontaneous behavior. Moreover, by controlling the amount of rare earth doping and designing two types of materials with different carrier behaviors, Sm/Er-codoped NaNbO 3 ceramics are regarded as an appropriate candidate for tracing the time of light irradiation and intelligent regulation of smart building materials. This work can promote the fundamental understanding and practical applications of self-recoverable photochromic bulk materials.

Persistent luminescence materials are promising for night-vision displays, background-free medical diagnostics, and high-resolution radiography, yet achieving efficient violet, yellow, and red emission within a single robust and scalable host remains a longstanding challenging. Here, we overcame this limitation by constructing Gd 3+ -mediated cluster traps within alkaline-earth fluorochlorides to minimize energy loss during electron migration. These clusters serve as both intrinsic emitters and efficient energy transfer platforms for various activators, including Eu 2+ , Sm 2+ , Tb 3+ , and Mn 2+ , enabling bright and spectrally tunable multicolor persistent luminescence upon X-ray irradiation. The persistent luminescence intensity of Eu 2+ is enhanced by up to 32.7-fold upon Gd 3+ codoping. Moreover, violet persistent luminescence from Eu 2+ is employed to excite perovskite quantum dots for full-color time-domain dynamic displays, while Sm 2+ emission facilitates low-dose, high-resolution delayed X-ray imaging. These findings establish a generalizable strategy for designing efficient multicolor persistent materials for advanced multifunctional optical technologies.

Different concentrations of NH 4 Cl are introduced to MAPbI 3 precursor solution, planar MAPbI 3 perovskite films, and solar cells’ performance with or without NH 4 Cl have been studied. The NH 4 Cl/MAPbI 3 films exhibit increased grain size and narrowed grain boundaries. The light absorption of perovskite films with different concentrations of NH 4 Cl was also evaluated. To understand the growth of perovskite films with NH 4 Cl added to perovskite precursor solutions, XRD and XPS spectroscopy were conducted on different perovskite film samples. By adding NH 4 Cl, the MAPbI 3 film shows good crystal quality and the shift of Pb peaks indicates that NH 4 Cl is not physically mixed but chemically incorporated into MAPbI 3 films. We attribute the effect to Cl ions of NH 4 Cl combining with free lead ions of MAPbI 3 so as to fill the vacancy of volatile I ions in the NH 4 Cl–MAPbI 3 films. The 20 mg NH 4 Cl-based device showed an enhanced performance of a PCE of 13.67% compared to the device without adding NH 4 Cl with a PCE of 10.24%. The introduction of 20 mg NH 4 Cl achieved the best passivation effect. Using a 20 mg NH 4 Cl device, the trap density can be reduced to 0.84 × 10 16 cm −3 , resulting in more efficient charge removal from the surface and improved performance.

Achieving multimodal response to various stimuli in a single luminescent material is crucial for advanced anti-counterfeiting and encryption. However, the simultaneous realization of multimodal luminescence and photochromism (PC) properties in one matrix remains a significant challenge. Here, a multimodal luminescent ceramic phosphor was developed via Bi 3+ doping into inverse spinel structure MgGa 2 O 4 lattice, which exhibits response upon ultraviolet (UV), near-infrared (NIR), X-ray, and thermal stimuli, specifically showing temperature-dependent multicolor luminescence (blue-white-red), high thermal stability of 397 nm emission (90%@473 K), and rapid PC properties (within 1 s). Through experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that the multi-color luminescence is mainly associated with interstitial oxygen and antisite defects, whereas PC is related to color centers formed by oxygen vacancies; anti-thermal quenching originates from the compensation of non-radiative luminescence by electrons in trap levels at high temperatures. Based on these findings, precise control over the optical properties of the MgGa 2 O 4 :Bi 3+ ceramic phosphors are achieved for applications such as temperature monitoring and information encryption. This work provides valuable insights for the design of multimodal stimuli-responsive systems.

Multifunctional phosphors that integrate background-free ultraviolet-C (UVC) persistent luminescence with rewritable optical memory are highly desirable for smart photonic applications. However, achieving such systems remains challenging, as it requires the integration of long-lived carrier storage and reversible photochromic switching within a single defect landscape. Here, we report a single-activator multifunctional phosphor, LiCaBO 3 :Pr 3+ (LCBO:Pr), which couples multi-responsive UVC luminescence with reversible photochromism. Under 248 nm excitation, LCBO:Pr exhibits intense UVC down-shifting emission (276 nm). Remarkably, the same Pr 3+ centers also enable anti-Stokes UVC emission under 450 nm excitation, allowing blue-light-driven UVC output. Beyond X-ray-excited radioluminescence, LCBO:Pr demonstrates efficient energy storage and releases dual-channel UVC/red persistent luminescence (>24 h) after excitation ceases. This process is accompanied by a reversible white-to-brown photochromic transition with a high coloration degree of 61.2%, which can be nearly completely erased by heating or blue-light bleaching, achieving recovery efficiencies of 98.7% and 97.1%, respectively. Experimental analyses and first-principles calculations reveal that defect states associated with V O3 and B i govern both carrier trapping and color-center formation. The coupling of these defect-mediated processes enables integrated optical functionalities within a single material platform, allowing multichannel information writing, readout, and erasure, and offering a versatile platform for solar-blind photonic applications.

Infected skin wounds, particularly those complicated by mature biofilms and metabolically quiescent bacteria, often evade antibiotic monotherapy. Such challenging scenarios call for localized, resistance-resilient strategies that concurrently address pathogen eradication and tissue repair. Herein, we develop a neutrophil extracellular trap (NET)-inspired, ultrasound-responsive fibrous reticular dynamic hydrogel (POPP gel) that integrates bacterial enrichment/capture with sonodynamically amplified killing within an injectable matrix. Mildly cationic porphyrin-grafted poly(pyrimidine) nanoparticles (POPP NPs) are embedded in a dynamically crosslinked network of oxidized hyaluronic acid-phenylboronic acid (OHA-PBA), forming a nanofibrous reticular architecture with high interfacial exposure and adhesion toward LPS/polysaccharide-rich infectious microenvironments. Upon ultrasound activation, POPP NPs generate reactive oxygen species and synergize with charge-mediated membrane perturbation, enabling broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including biofilm-embedded and drug-resistant phenotypes. The OHA-PBA network additionally confers shear-thinning injectability, rapid self-healing, wound-conforming coverage, and preserved fibroblast viability and migration. In murine full-thickness infected wounds and rat deep second-degree burn infections, ultrasound-activated POPP gel markedly reduces bacterial burden, accelerates wound closure, and promotes mature tissue reconstruction, characterized by continuous re-epithelialization, organized collagen deposition, and attenuated inflammation. Collectively, this NET-inspired sonodynamic hydrogel provides a modular design framework for localized antibacterial biomaterials aimed at refractory infected wounds. Statement of significance Infected skin wounds with mature biofilms often resist antibiotics. Drawing inspiration from neutrophil extracellular traps, we develop an injectable sonodynamic hydrogel (POPP gel) that captures bacteria via a nanofibrous cationic network and kills them upon ultrasound activation. The gel also supports fibroblast function and wound healing. In murine infected wound and burn models, it reduces bacterial burden and accelerates tissue repair. This work offers a strategy for localized treatment of refractory infected wounds. Download: Download high-res image (343KB) Download: Download full-size image

Nondestructive X-ray imaging techniques provide insights into the internal structure and deformation defects of electronic components. Abnormal heating is a common phenomenon that often occurs with electronic component failure. However, the significance of invisible thermal signals is often overlooked due to the limitations of conventional scintillator and X-ray imaging techniques. Rare-earth-doped fluoride scintillators, known for their high-energy irradiation response and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) properties, offer the potential to simultaneously utilize thermal signals and nondestructive X-ray imaging. Herein, we present a thermal mapping-assisted X-ray 3D tomographic application based on a trap-modulated LiLuF 4 :Tb,Zn (LLF:Tb,Zn) scintillator. By controlling the trap density in the energy range of 0.66 to 1.77 eV, LLF:Tb,Zn microcrystals achieve over 60 days of X-ray energy storage and a 7.7-fold increase in TSL. Additionally, the light yield is 143 % higher than that of the previous level, and the detection limit reaches 3.83 nGy s −1 . Furthermore, utilizing refractive-index matching between LLF:Tb,Zn microcrystals and polyacrylate, a high-loading, large-area flexible scintillation film is developed for thermal and high spatial resolution X-ray imaging of electronic chips. The film has an imaging spatial resolution of 35 LP mm −1 . Finally, we demonstrate the application of LLF:Tb,Zn films for thermal mapping-assisted 3D X-ray tomography reconstruction of an electronic component, offering a novel approach to multimodal X-ray imaging.

Pulmonary fibrosis resulting from recurrent lung inflammation due to pathogen infection may lead to serious problems and death. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), consisting of DNAs and proteins released by neutrophils in response to infection, are major pathogenesis factors for pathogen-associated pulmonary fibrosis. By mimicking nucleic acid hydrolase, polymeric artificial DNases bearing imidazole units (PEG-PIm) are developed to degrade the DNAs and thus deconstruct NETs, inhibiting pulmonary fibrosis. By tailoring the PIm segments with varied imidazole units, the polymer hydrolase with a defined number of imidazole units outperforms other samples in the cleavage of DNAs and inhibits the transition of pulmonary fibroblasts to myofibroblasts. This polymer digests the DNAs complexed with cationic peptides, unlike natural DNase I. By aerosol inhalation, it reduces NET infiltration in lungs and significantly alleviates inflammatory cytokines and fibrosis. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the optimized polymer may expose more effective imidazole units to the DNA backbones and thus enhance the affinity and hydrolysis of phosphodiester linkages. The function is also confirmed by systematic administration of PEG-PIm to rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, a strategy is provided for treating pulmonary fibrosis that can be applied in a pandemic to reduce high mortality because of pathogen infection.

Blood-contacting medical devices are essential for sustaining cardiovascular patients' lives. Advanced antithrombotic materials serve as pivotal components to enhance device reliability, as non-physiological hemodynamics and materials provoke thrombus that compromises device functionality and patient safety. Liquid-infused surfaces (LIS), as a bioinert surface modification technology, have been proven effective in inhibiting thrombus formation by suppressing the adhesion of plasma components. However, the loss of lubricants under hemodynamic shear stresses imposes limitations on their clinical application. Enhancing the durability of LIS in blood-contacting environments remains a critical challenge. Natural fluid-retentive systems, such as mucus cells, utilize secretory mechanisms and microvilli structures to anchor fluids effectively. Inspired by these biological paradigms, this study engineered a microstructured lubricant-secreting antithrombotic surface (ms-LSAS) to address the sustained antithrombogenicity requirements of medical devices. The gel-based laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) fabricated via femtosecond laser and soft lithography mitigate surface lubricant displacement caused by hemodynamic shear stress through enhanced surface area and capillary forces, while continuous secretion of the gel ensures sustained lubricant replenishment. Furthermore, the surface topographic microstructures maintain platelet adhesion suppression through steric hindrance even under lubricant-depleted conditions. Synergistic effects of the lubricating layer and flexible submicron topology suppress protein adsorption and platelet adhesion, achieving robust static and dynamic antithrombogenicity. ms-LSAS can mitigate the critical challenge in blood-contacting devices: thrombus formation induced by platelet activation on material surfaces under non-physiological hemodynamics. This bioinspired strategy may thus pave the way for achieving anticoagulation equilibrium in next-generation medical implants.

The colloidal synthesis of a new type of lead-free halide quadruple-perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) is reported. The photoluminescence quantum yield and charge-carrier lifetime of quadruple-perovskite NCs can be enhanced by 96 and 77-fold, respectively, via metal alloying. Study of charge-carrier dynamics provide solid demonstrate that the PL enhancement is due to the elimination of ultrafast (1.4 ps) charge-carrier trapping processes in the alloyed NCs. Thanks to the high crystallinity, low trap-state density, and long carrier lifetime (193.4 μs), the alloyed quadruple-perovskite NCs can serve as the active material for high-performance photodetectors, which exhibit high responsivity (up to 0.98 × 10 4 A W −1 ) and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 3 × 10 6 %. These numbers are among the highest for perovskite-NC-based photodetectors.

The tremendous menace of the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgency for antipathogen masks to stop the transmission of airborne infectious diseases. Most prevailing antipathogen masks manifest a slower sterilization rate that lags behind the pathogen momentum traversing the masks, thereby engendering an elevated susceptibility to infection. Here we tailor nanofibrous meta-aerogel electric traps, 3D-assembled from self-knotted carbon nanotube networks in an all rigid nanofibrous skeleton. This superior configuration revolves around the creation of numerous “dielectrophoretic–aerodynamic grippers”, which are capable of directional manipulation of microbes toward the region of the lethal intensive electric field. Based on this, we present a disinfection unit comprising a pair of aerogel electrodes that demonstrate a rapid killing rate (>99.99% biocidal efficacy within 0.016 s) and long-term durability (12 h of continuous operation). Additionally, a microbutton lithium cell is employed as a power supply to fabricate an antipathogen face mask with this disinfection unit, which exhibits superior pathogen inactivation efficacy compared to commercial masks. This scalable biocidal protective equipment holds great potential for use in emergency medical services.
