Ti4+-induced dual-functional α-MnO2 nanowires: boosting transport kinetics and interfacial optimization for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Min Wang,Tianyi Li,Yuncheng Huang,Xin Liu,Yixuan Liang,Wen Zhang,Guoqing Yang,Fan Su,Wei Zhang,Chuan Ding,Qilin Gu,Chao Huangfu,Hailin Shen,Zhenghui Pan

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are attracting widespread attention for large-scale   energy storage due to their high safety, environmental friendliness, high theoretical capacity and favorable cost-effectiveness. Substantial research has focused on addressing side reactions such as corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and dendrite formation at the zinc anode interface. However, the absence of high-performance cathode materials hinders the commercialization of this battery system. Manganese dioxide as a promising cathode candidate for ZIBs suffers from severe capacity decay during cycling, which remains a critical challenge. Herein, an effective strategy for enhancing cyclic stability and specific capacity of α-MnO 2 nanowires via Ti 4+ -induced dual-functionality is provided. As expected, the Ti-doped sample exhibits superior cyclic stability and rate capability compared to the pristine material, delivering an initial specific capacity of 175 mAh·g -1 and maintaining 116 mAh·g -1 after 200 cycles. Notably, the Ti-doped electrode retains excellent long-term stability and comparable specific capacity upon reverting to the initial low current density after stepwise cycling at progressively increased rates, demonstrating enhanced structural and electrochemical reversibility. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the incorporation of Ti 4+ offers dual-functionality by reducing energy barriers for electron transitions and ion migration, while optimizing the electrode surface to suppress insulating by-products accumulation, thereby boosting overall electrochemical performance.

Ti4+ modified melamine foam in the pipette tip for effective solid-phase extraction of glyphosate in aqueous samples

Jinjie Xu,Yuehong Pang,Zhuying Yan,Xiaofang Shen

Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, is prone to residue in the environment that may cause harm to humans. In this work, titanium ion-modified melamine foams (MF/PDA/Ti 4+ ) were prepared as sorbents to achieve rapid extraction of glyphosate by pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PTSPE). The MF/PDA/Ti 4+ was characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS, and TGA, and its adsorption properties were evaluated by adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments. The porous structure and good mechanical properties of MF made the MF/PDA/Ti 4+ fill into the pipette-tip easily and could achieve low back pressure. The developed PTSPE method showcased short extraction time (<2 min) for glyphosate and the limits of detection (LOD, 3σ/k) was 4.9 μg/L. It was applied in aqueous samples (tap water, lake water, tea drink, and orange juice) with recoveries ranging from 82.8 % to 108.2 % and the relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 3) was less than 7.7 %, demonstrating broad perspectives on the extraction of glyphosate from the aquatic and terrestrial environment.

Amino-functionalized MIL-125(Ti) for photodenitrification of pyridine in fuels via coordination activation by unsaturated Ti4+ centers

Shihui Wang,Zhoujun He,Ling Wu,Deling Wang,Ruiru Si,Xiyao Liu,Ruowen Liang

Due to their explicit structure, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been supposed to be credible platforms to research the micro-mechanism of heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this study, amino-functionalized MOFs (MIL-125(Ti)–NH2 (denoted as MTi), UiO-66(Zr)–NH2 (denoted as UZr) and MIL-68(In)–NH2 (denoted as MIn)) with three different metal centers were synthesized and applied for the denitrification of simulated fuels under visible light irradiation, during which pyridine was used as a typical nitrogen-containing compound. The results showed that MTi had the best activity among the above three MOFs, and the denitrogenation rate increased to 80% after 4 h of visible light irradiation. On the grounds of the theoretical calculation of pyridine adsorption and actual activity experiments, it can be presumed that the unsaturated Ti4+ metal centers should be the key active sites. Meanwhile, the XPS and in situ infrared results verified that the coordinatively unsaturated Ti4+ sites facilitate the activation of pyridine molecules through the surface –N⋯Ti– coordination species. The coordination–photocatalysis synergism promotes the efficiency of photocatalytic performance and the corresponding mechanism is proposed.

SnO2-based solid solutions for CH4 deep oxidation: Quantifying the lattice capacity of SnO2 using an X-ray diffraction extrapolation method

Qi Sun,Xianglan Xu,Honggen Peng,Xiuzhong Fang,Wenming Liu,Jiawei Ying,Fan Yu,Xiang Wang

A series of SnO 2 -based catalysts modified by Mn, Zr, Ti and Pb oxides with a Sn/M (M = Mn, Zr, Ti and Pb) molar ratio of 9/1 were prepared by a co-precipitation method and used for CH 4 and CO oxidation . The Mn 3+ , Zr 4+ , Ti 4+ and Pb 4+ cations are incorporated into the lattice of tetragonal rutile SnO 2 to form a solid solution structure. As a consequence, the surface area and thermal stability of the catalysts are improved. Moreover, the oxygen species of the modified catalysts become easier to be reduced. Therefore, the oxidation activity over the catalysts was improved, except for the one modified by Pb oxide. Manganese oxide demonstrates the best promotional effects for SnO 2 . Using an X-ray diffraction extrapolation method, the lattice capacity of SnO 2 for Mn 2 O 3 was 0.135 g Mn 2 O 3 /g SnO 2 , which indicates that to form stable solid solution, only 21% Sn 4+ cations in the lattice can be maximally replaced by Mn 3+ . If the amount of Mn 3+ cations is over the capacity, Mn 2 O 3 will be formed, which is not favorable for the activity of the catalysts. The Sn rich samples with only Sn-Mn solid solution phase show higher activity than the ones with excess Mn 2 O 3 species.

Enhanced electrochemical properties of Ni-rich layered cathode materials via Mg2+ and Ti4+ co-doping for lithium-ion batteries

Jiale Wang,Yan Nie,Chang Miao,Yi Tan,Minyue Wen,Wei Xiao

To optimize the electrochemical performance of Ni-rich cathode materials, the 0.005 mol of Mg 2+ and 0.005 mol of Ti 4+ co -doping LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 composite powders, labeled as NCM-11, are successfully prepared by being calcinated at 750 °C for 15 h following by an appropriate post-treatment, which are confirmed by XRD, EDS and XPS. The results suggest that NCM-11 presents a well-ordered layered structure with a low Li + /Ni 2+ mixing degree of 1.46% and Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ ions are uniformly distributed across the lattice. The cell assembled with NCM-11 can deliver an initial discharge specific capacity of 194.2 mAh g −1 and retain a discharge specific capacity of 163.0 mAh g −1 after 100cycles at 2.0 C at 25 °C. Furthermore, it still maintains a discharge specific capacity of 166.7 mAh g −1 after 100cycles at 2.0 C at 60 °C. More importantly, it also exhibits a higher discharge specific capacity of about 150.7 mAh g −1 even at 5.0 C . Those superior electrochemical performance can be mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ co -doping, in which Mg 2+ ions can occupy the Li + layer to act as pillar ions and Ti 4+ ions can occupy the transition metal ions layer to enlarge the interplane spacing. Thus, the heterovalent cations co -doping strategy can be considered as a simple and practical method to improve the electrochemical performance of Ni-rich layered cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Suppressing Mn3+-induced Jahn-teller distortion in LiMnxFe1-xPO4 via synergistic Mg2+ and Ti4+ dopant toward robust battery performance

Xuejie Zhang,Huijie Zhang,Yanyang Jia,Guihua Liu,Aijia Wei,Yongguang Zhang,Jingde Li

Innovatively proposed Mg 2+ & Ti 4+ co-doped to efficiently suppress Mn 3+ -induced Jahn-Teller distortion and stabilize LMFP's olivine framework. • In-situ characterizations combined with DFT calculations clarify the intrinsic mechanism of co-doped regulating LMFP's crystal/electronic structures. • Co-doped significantly boosts LMFP's electronic conductivity and capacitive contribution, realizing superior high-rate performance and structural reversibility. • Co-doped LMFP@C-MT reduces Mn dissolution by alleviating Jahn-Teller distortion, further enhancing the cathode's structural and electrochemical stability. LiMn x Fe 1-x PO 4 (LMFP) cathodes are considered promising candidates for next-generation lithium-ion (Li + ) batteries due to their high safety, low cost, environmental benignity, and relatively high energy density. However, they suffer from severe Jahn-Teller distortion and sluggish Li + kinetics, leading to poor structural stability and rate performance. Herein, a synergistic Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ co-doping strategy is proposed to concurrently regulate the crystal structure and electronic properties of LMFP. Structural and electrochemical analyses show that Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ effectively suppress Mn 3+ -induced Jahn-Teller distortion. This helps stabilize the olivine framework while causing a small shrinkage in the crystal lattice, thereby improving Li + diffusion capability. In situ XRD reveals that un-doped lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP@C) undergoes a distinct phase transition during the high-voltage plateau, as evidenced by peak splitting, whereas Mg 2+ and Ti 4+ co-doped lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP@C-MT) exhibits a continuous peak shift, indicative of a solid-solution reaction with improved structural reversibility. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that Mg 2+ lowers the Li + migration energy barrier, while Ti 4+ stabilizes the Mn electronic structure near the Fermi level. This synergistic effect suppresses Jahn-Teller distortion, thereby enhancing both structural stability and electrochemical kinetics. This enables the LMFP@C-MT cathode to deliver a high initial capacity of 158.35 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, along with outstanding cycling stability, retaining 91.39% capacity after 500 cycles at 1C. This work both presents an effective structural modification strategy and supplies theoretical guidance for the development of high-performance LMFP-based cathode materials. The LMFP@C-MT synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method suppresses the Jahn–Teller distortion induced by Mn 3+ and stabilizes the lattice. Combined with the ordered carbon coating, it enhances the charge transfer kinetics, thereby achieving excellent structural reversibility and electrochemical performance. Synergistic Ti/F Co-doping for Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathodes via Ti3+/Ti4+ Redox and Structural Stabilization

Shengrui Cui,Chengliang Lin,Fangfang Dong,Mingxu Duan,Mengqiu Li,Abdul Majid,Ayaulym Belgibayeva,Yongcheng Jin

As a promising high-voltage cathode material candidate for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), spinel-type LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has attracted significant attention due to its high operating voltage (~4.7 V). However, its intrinsic structural instability and severe surfacial side reactions lead to poor cycling stability and rate capability. This study presents an innovative low-temperature calcination strategy to synthesize Ti/F co-doped LNMO (LNMO-TiF3-x) cathode materials, utilizing TiF3 as a dual-functional dopant. Both experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the introduced Ti3+/Ti4+ redox couple activates additional Mn-based capacity within the 4.2 V region, while contributing a minor yet measurable reversible capacity. Simultaneously, Ti/F co-doping strengthens the lattice through covalent bonding, effectively suppressing transition metal dissolution and synergistically enhancing cycling stability. Furthermore, Ti4+ doping expands the (111) lattice spacing, which facilitates Li+ diffusion kinetics and significantly enhances rate capabilities. The optimized LNMO-TiF3-4 exhibits outstanding performance, delivering 131.9 mAh g-1 at 10 C and maintaining 72.4% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 5 C. This work not only demonstrates the high electrochemical performance of LNMO-TiF3-x but also offers new insights into bulk-interface synergistic engineering for advanced high-voltage cathode materials.

Hydrogen-induced Ptσ+–O–Ti4+–(H–oxygen vacancy) interfacial sites in Pt/TiO2 for enhanced low-temperature CO oxidation

Junbo Tian,Peng Zheng,Shuang Deng,Yongjun Ji,Tengfei Zhang,Zhiyi Sun,Wenxing Chen,Yi-Chi Wang,Lin Gu,Dong Su,Guangwen Xu,Ziyi Zhong,Fabing Su

Understanding reconstructed interfacial sites is crucial for enhancing the catalytic conversion efficiency, as these sites can facilitate reactant adsorption, transformation, and desorption. Herein, we report an unconventional interfacial structure of Pt σ + –O–Ti 4+ –H δ + –oxygen vacancy (OV), in which atomic hydrogen binds to Ti 4+ sites via a charge-compensation mechanism involving subsurface OVs. This restructuring induced by hydrogen creates electron-rich Pt centers and interfacial oxygen, resulting in spatial elongation of the Pt–O and O–Ti bonds. This Pt σ + –O site, stabilized by –Ti 4+ –(H–OV), promotes the activation of CO adsorption/interfacially absorbed oxygen and interfacial lattice oxygen, effectively coupling the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-van Krevelen pathways. These sites facilitate the rapid CO 2 formation and desorption. Consequently, this system achieves complete CO conversion at 120 °C with an ultralow Pt loading of 0.17 wt% (even in the presence of 0.005% SO 2 and 10% vol H 2 O) and a 59-fold increase in turnover frequency compared to the control sample lacking this interfacial structure.

Construction of Monoatomic-Modified Defective Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ Nanofibers for Photocatalytic Oxidation of HMF to Valuable Chemicals

Mufan Wang,Shiying Fan,Xinyong Li,Jugong Shi,Yan Mao,Yaqi Yang,Gao Li

Efficiently upgrading 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into high-value-added products, such as 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), through a photocatalytic process by using solar energy has been incessantly pursued worldwide. Herein, a series of transition-metal (TM = Ni, Fe, Co, Cu) single atoms were supported on Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ nanofibers (NFs) with certain defects (Ov), denoted as TM SAC-Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ NFs (TM = Ni, Fe, Co, Cu), aiming to enhance the photocatalytic conversion of HMF. A super HMF conversion rate of 57% and a total yield of 1718.66 μmol g–1 h–1 (DFF and FDCA) surpassing that of the Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ NFs by 1.6 and 2.1 times, respectively, are realized when TM is Co (Co SAC-Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ NFs). Experiments combined with density functional theory calculation (DFT) demonstrate that the TM single atoms occupy the Ti site of Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ NFs, which plays a dominant role in the photo-oxidation of HMF. Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterizations confirm the strong electron local exchange interaction in TM SAC-Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ NFs and demonstrate the substitution of Ti by the TM SACs. The projected density of states and charge density difference reveal that the strong interaction between metal-3d and O-2p orbitals forms Ti–O–TM bonds. The bonds are identified as the adsorption site, where TM single atoms on the surface of Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ NFs reduce HMF molecule adsorption energy (Eads). Furthermore, the TM single atom modulates the electronic structure of TM SAC-Ti4+αTi3+1-αO2−δ NFs through electron transfer, leading to narrow band gaps of the photocatalysts and enhancing their photocatalytic performance. This study has uncovered a newer strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic attributes of semiconducting materials.

Effects of Ti4+ Doping on the Structural Stability and Electrochemical Performance of Layered P2-Na0.7MnO2.05 Cathodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Kexin Zheng,Jiawei Wang,Haifeng Wang,Zhengqing Pei,Qian Wang,Xinjie Zhou,Dehua Ma,Ju Lu

The P2-Na0.7MnO2.05cathode material has long been constrained by phase transitions induced by the Jahn–Teller (J–T) effect during charge–discharge cycles, leading to suboptimal electrochemical performance. In this study, we employed a liquid phase co-precipitation method to incorporate Ti during the precursor Mn3O4synthesis, followed by calcination to obtain Na0.7TixMn(1−x)O2.05materials. We investigated the effects of Ti doping on the structure, morphology, Mn3+concentration, and Na+diffusion coefficients of Na0.7TixMn(1−x)O2.05. Our findings revealed that the 7% Ti-doped NTMO-007 sample exhibited reduced grain agglomeration and smaller particle sizes compared to the undoped sample, thereby enhancing the electrode–electrolyte contact area and electrochemical activity. Additionally, Ti doping increased the crystal cell volume of Na0.7MnO2.05and broadened the Na+transport channels, significantly enhancing the Na+diffusion coefficient. At a 0.5 C rate, the NTMO-007 sample demonstrated a specific capacity of 143.3 mAh g−1with an 81.8% capacity retention after 100 cycles, markedly outperforming the undoped NMO sample, which had a capacity retention of only 61.5%.

Miniaturized High-Harmonic-Suppressed Circulators with Integrated Design Enabled by Cu2+/Ti4+ Co-Doped NiCuZn Ferrites (High-εr) and LTCC Technology

Zelai Cheng,Xingyu Huo,Zhen Zhao,Feng Qiao,Xiuling Yang,Ying Chen,Mingshan Qu,Hua Su

This work presents a miniaturization strategy for ferrite circulators by enhancing the dielectric constant ε r of NiCuZn ferrites and LTCC technology. Highly polarizable Cu 2+ and Ti 4+ substitutions for Ni 2+ and Fe 3+ increase dielectric constant, while non-magnetic Ti 4+ reduces magnetocrystalline anisotropy and narrows ferromagnetic resonance linewidth ΔH , with Cu 2+ concurrently lowering sintering temperatures. In the Ni 0.42-x/2 Cu 0.18+x Zn 0.4 Ti x/2 Fe 1.98-x O 4-δ system, the x = 0.1 composition (sintered at 975 °C) achieves minimal ΔH (82 Oe), ε r ≈ 14.6, and 4π M s ≈ 4219 G, whereas x = 0.6 (sintered at 925 °C) balances ε r ≈ 20.8 with magnetic performance ( ΔH ≈167 Oe, 4π M s ≈ 2117 G), confirming LTCC compatibility. A heterostructured substrate fabricated by co-firing Ni 0.12 Cu 0.78 Zn 0.4 Ti 0.3 Fe 1.38 O 4-δ ferrite (x = 0.6) with a microwave dielectric (50 wt.% SrCu 0.95 Mn 0.05 Si 4 O 10 + 50 wt.% Sr 3 V 2 O 8 ) exhibits controlled interfacial diffusion. HFSS simulations demonstrate that the integrated circulator-filter achieves significant miniaturization with >30 dB harmonic suppression (14-24 GHz) while maintaining in-band performance (| S 21 | < 1 dB, | S 11 | and | S 12 | < -20 dB at 7-12 GHz). The validates high- ε r NiCuZn ferrites and LTCC composite substrates for compact multifunctional microwave components.

Novel Ti4+-chelated magnetic nanostructured affinity microspheres containing N-methylene phosphonic chitosan for highly selective enrichment and rapid separation of phosphopeptides

Zhi-Gang Wang,Ji-Lin Zhang,De-Hui Sun,Jia-Zuan Ni

Magnetic composite particles immobilized with metal affinity ions show high potential in the phosphoproteome mass-spectrometric (MS) analysis. However, the preparation of this kind of material still suffers from a complicated synthesis procedure and high cost. In this work, the magnetic nanostructured composite microspheres (MPCS) incorporated into N-methylene phosphonic chitosan were first fabricated via a facile one-pot synthesis strategy and titanium ions (Ti4+) were subsequently immobilized onto the MPCS to form MPCS-Ti4+ affinity particles. The uniform spherical MPCS-Ti4+ affinity particles with abundant chelated titanium ions have a particle size distribution between 126 nm and 280 nm, and they display superparamagnetism with a saturation magnetization (Ms) value of 44.75 emu g−1. The amount of the immobilized Ti4+ ions was estimated to be 11.6 wt% by EDS. The MPCS-Ti4+ exhibited excellent dispersibility in aqueous solution, high affinity selectivity for phosphopeptides and quite fast magnetic separation within 10 s as well as good reusability. Thus, the prepared magnetic MPCS-Ti4+ nanostructured affinity materials will possess great potential in phosphoproteome research.
