Efficient and Stable Photoelectrochemical Seawater Splitting with TiO2@g-C3N4 Nanorod Arrays Decorated by Co-Pi

Yuangang Li,Rongrong Wang,Huajing Li,Xiaoliang Wei,Juan Feng,Kaiqiang Liu,Yongqiang Dang,Anning Zhou

Co-Pi decorated TiO2@graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) nanorod arrays (denoted as CCNRs) with different mass ratios of g-C3N4 have been constructed on the FTO substrate through three processes, hydrothermal growth, chemical bath deposition and electrodeposition. First, TiO2 nanorod arrays were grown onto a FTO substrate by a hydrothermal method. Second, g-C3N4 was coated onto the TiO2 nanorod arrays by immersing the above substrate with TiO2 nanorod arrays into a solution of urea and then heated at higher temperature. In this procedure, the amount of the g-C3N4 on the TiO2 nanorod arrays can be controlled by tuning the concentration of the urea solution. At last, Co-Pi were decorated on the surface of the TiO2@g-C3N4 by electrodeposition. The as-prepared CCNRs were characterized by XRD, FESEM, TEM, XPS, UV–vis, and FTIR, respectively, which illustrated that Co-Pi moieties were successfully decorated on the hybrid TiO2@g-C3N4 nanorod arrays. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements have demonstrated that the prepared CCNRs serve as an efficient and stable photoanode for PEC seawater splitting. The photocurrent density reaches 1.6 mA/cm2 under 100 mW/cm2 (AM1.5G) light illumination at 1.23 V (RHE). More significantly, the CCNRs photoanode is quite stable during seawater splitting and the performance remain undiminished even after 10 h continuous illumination. Finally, a systematical photocatalytic mechanism of the Co-Pi decorated TiO2@g-C3N4 was proposed, and it can be considered as potential explanation of enhanced PEC performance.

Significant Improvement of Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2/g–C3N4 Composite Synthesized by the Aiding of Hydrothermal Method

Mengfan Wang,Wenbo Miao,Hongliang Xu,Chaoning Huang,Mingliang Li,Gang Shao,Hailong Wang,Hongxia Lu,Rui Zhang

g–C 3 N 4 nanosheets were first synthesized by calcining the mixture of hydrochloric acid-pretreated melamine and ammonium chloride. Then, by the aiding of solvothermal method and hydrofluoric acid as morphology modifier, 001-TiO 2 /g–C 3 N 4 (TCN-X, X = 5 , 3, 2, 1) nanocomposites were synthesized using g–C 3 N 4 nanosheets and tetrabutyl titanate, with the mass ratio of g–C 3 N 4 to TiO 2 was 5:1, 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1, respectively. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption method, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectrum, photoluminescence spectrum, etc. Their photocatalytic properties were evaluated under visible light irradiation with rhodamine B (RhB) as the target pollutant. The results reveal that the TCN-3 composites had a large specific surface area of 67.38 m 2 /g and consisted of g–C 3 N 4 nanosheets and anatase TiO 2 crystals about 10–20 nm in size. The (001) crystal planes of TiO 2 can be easily observed in TCN-X composites. All TiO 2 /g–C 3 N 4 composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity compared with the pure g–C 3 N 4 did. The photocatalytic property of TCN-X samples varied with the mass ratio of g–C 3 N 4 to TiO 2 , and TCN-3 presented the optimum photocatalytic performance. In total, 50 mg of TCN-3 completely degraded 50 mL and 100 mL of RhB solution (10 mg/L) in 15 min and 40 min, respectively. The reaction rate constant of TCN-3 was 6.7 times as large as that of pure g–C 3 N 4 . TCN-3 also presented outstanding activity for the photocatalytic degradation of the colorless tetracycline solution. The significant improvement in photocatalytic activity of TCN-3 was attributed to the evenly distribution of TiO 2 on g–C 3 N 4 , the enhanced specific surface area and the construction of 001-TiO 2 /g–C 3 N 4 heterojunction between the g–C 3 N 4 nanosheets and the (001) crystal planes of anatase TiO 2 , which greatly reduced the recombination rate of the photo-generated electron and hole.

Mojtaba Rostami,Milad Jourshabani,Fatemeh Davar,Ghodsi Mohammadi Ziarani,Alireza Badiei

In this research, the ultrasound (US) technique was applied as a facile synthesis method for preparing the black TiO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 type II heterojunction, coupled with a Schottky junction MOF (ZIF-67)-derived x wt% Co 3 S 4 /nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) ( x = 3, 10, and 15) with hollow nanobox (HNB) morphology, as a smart nanoheteroarchitecture (NHA) photocatalyst to enhance visible-light photocatalytic activity. Additionally, the solvothermal synthesis route was employed to fabricate the MOF (ZIF-67)-derived Co 3 S 4 /NC cubic hollow nanoboxes (CHNBs) before the pyrolysis process. The black TiO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 wt% Co 3 S 4 /NC (TiCN-15% CoS/NC) NHAs exhibited high photocatalytic activity in degrading methylene blue. The synergetic effect of all components in black TiCN- x wt% CoS/NC NHAs resulted in efficient electron-hole pair separation and charge mobility on Co 3 S 4 /NC HNB and g-C 3 N 4 surfaces, which led to a highly effective recombination rate of charge carriers and an excellent improvement in photocatalytic performance.

Photocatalytic semi-flexible pavement for NO removal to alleviate urban automobile emissions pollution

Hang Diao,Bo Peng,Wenjing Kuang,Tianqing Ling,Ying Gao,Kaiyuan Luo

The escalating urban air pollution caused by vehicular nitrogen oxides (NO x ) necessitates sustainable solutions. Solar-driven photocatalytic NO removal represents a green approach, yet challenges remain in developing cost-effective photocatalysts with high removal efficiency. This study through the Fe-TiO 2 combined with thermal polycondensation method with g-C 3 N 4 build heterojunction generated Fe-TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst, in order to improve its NO catalytic efficiency. The optimized photocatalyst achieves a single-cycle NO removal rate of 52.3 %, demonstrating the 10.7 % improvement compared to pure TiO 2 . Following five cycles, the decay rate is only 5.52 %, which is significantly lower than the 12.45 % of TiO 2 , thus indicating superior long-term stability. Microscopic characterization shows that Fe can induce the generation of oxygen defects inside TiO 2 to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs; and induce the formation of a built-in electric field to enhance the separation of photogenerated charges with the heterojunction formed by the construction of g-C 3 N 4 . Moreover, the designed photocatalytic semi-flexible pavement incorporating this photocatalyst exhibits 65.33 % NO removal efficiency per cycle, 10.95 % higher than traditional TiO 2 based systems, with a total decay rate of 1.71 % after five cycles. Additionally, the pavement demonstrates excellent mechanical properties, including fivefold higher rutting resistance than conventional asphalt pavements. This study provides a new sustainable pavement removal scheme for mitigating urban exhaust agglomeration pollution.

A Hollow Flower-Like Ti3C2@TiO2/G-C3N4 Z-Scheme Heterojunction for Effective Visible-Light-Driven Tetracycline Degradation

Jinglin Wang,Yuntian Wei,Shikun Chen,Chan Zheng

Efficient interfacial carrier transfer and separation can effectively enhance photocatalytic activity. In this study, a high-performance Z-scheme Ti 3 C 2 @TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (TCTCN) ternary photocatalyst possessing a hollow flower-like architecture was synthesized using a reliable and effective method. Ti 3 C 2 @TiO 2 heterojunctions were constructed because exfoliated Ti 3 C 2 was partially oxidized to TiO 2 during the formation of hollow g-C 3 N 4 flower-like microspheres. In the Z-scheme heterojunction, the highly conductive metallic Ti 3 C 2 layers functioned as solid-state electron mediators, promoting electron–hole separation and migration efficiency. Under visible-light irradiation, the as-synthesized TCTCN photocatalyst possessed outstanding photocatalytic tetracycline (TC) degradation efficiency that was 2.03-fold and 1.25-fold higher than those of individual layered and hollow flower-like g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The excellent photocatalytic TC degradation efficiency is attributed to the unique hollow structure and synergy among the Ti 3 C 2 , TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 structures in the TCTCN composite, enabling the Z-scheme-mechanism-assisted rapid separation and slow recombination of photoinduced electron–hole pairs because of the increased photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the TCTCN ternary hybrid photocatalysts possessed good physical stability and reusability, and the TC degradation efficiency negligibly decreased after five cycles. This work is an important development to establish a sound foundation for designing g-C 3 N 4 -based hybrid photocatalysts possessing substantial charge carrier separation and transfer for efficiently degrading antibiotics.

Efficient visible light catalytic degradation of toxic organic pollution by hollow urchin-like TiO2@g-C3N4/GQDs composite

Gang Liu,Sheng Xu,Wenting Li,Zhenxi Wang,Jinlong Cui

In order to expand the photoresponsive spectrum of TiO 2 and improve its catalytic activity under visible light, the hollow urchin-like composites of TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 /GQDs (TCN/GQDs) with a core-shell structure heterojunction was synthesized through a hydrothermal method and calcination. Potassium titanium oxalate, melamine, and citric acid were utilized as the raw materials for this synthesis process. The TCN/GQDs composites were subjected to a range of analyses to examine their microstructure and photoelectric properties. The findings indicated that the synthesized composites effectively enhanced the absorption spectrum of TiO 2 in the visible light range by creating the stable heterojunctions among TiO 2 , g-C 3 N 4 and GQDs. Additionally, the ability of these composites to degrade toxic organic pollutants under visible light was studied by using several different organic dyes and antibiotics. The results demonstrated that the TCN/GQDs composites exhibited efficient visible light catalytic degradation capability on organic pollutants, and the degradation efficiency could approach to 100 % under visible light in a short time. Furthermore, the photocatalyst exhibited hardly change of degradation efficiency towards organic pollutants even after 5 cycles of testing, suggesting its commendable performance in visible light catalysis and potential for repeated utilization.

Beyond drop-casting: A laser-sputtered TiO2/g-C3N4 photoanode for high-reproducibility photoelectrochemical immunosensing of PIVKA-II

Qingmei Yang,Yirui Lin,Yihui Qiu,Chengxiu Wu,Xiaojiao Zhang,Wanxiong Lin,Beibei Wang,Ying Hou,Yanping Lin,Yue Jia

Achieving consistent fabrication of photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors remains a challenge, largely due to the variability introduced by manual drop-casting of photoactive materials. To address this limitation, we report a one-step laser-sputtering technique that enables the construction of a standardized sensing platform for ultrasensitive detection of Protein Induced by Vitamin K Absence or Antagonist-II (PIVKA-II), a clinically relevant biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma. In this process, a mixed target of titanium and melamine is irradiated, where laser-induced thermal and photon pressure effects simultaneously synthesize a TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction and uniformly sputter-deposit it onto an ITO electrode. This laser-engineered photoanode exhibits excellent batch-to-batch consistency. After immobilizing anti-PIVKA-II antibody, the resulting immunosensor quantifies PIVKA-II based on the specific immunocomplex-triggered photocurrent decrease, achieving a wide linear range from 0.5 ng/mL to 1 μg/mL and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.13 ng/mL with high specificity, stability, and reproducibility. Beyond offering a dependable tool for clinical PIVKA-II analysis, this work establishes a generalizable laser-based manufacturing strategy that paves the way toward standardized production of next-generation PEC biosensors.

TiO2/g-C3N4 photoanode prepared with polydopamine inspiration for photocatalytic fuel cells towards simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation

Yuxin Liu,Lin Chen,Jinwang Li,Rong Chen,Xun Zhu,Dingding Ye,Yang Yang,Qiang Liao

Photocatalytic fuel cell is a promising wastewater treatment technology, which can degrade pollutants and generate electricity simultaneously. However, the development of high-performance photoanode remains a challenge for photocatalytic fuel cells. Inspired by the bionic material of polydopamine, we propose to apply polydopamine to prepare the TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photoanode for enhancing the adsorption of protonated g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets onto TiO 2 via electrostatic interaction, which greatly promotes charge transfer and inhibits electron-hole recombination. Moreover, the polydopamine particles can be converted into plenty of pores during the calcination process, which enhances light scattering and mass transfer. Consequently, the TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photoanode prepared with polydopamine inspiration exhibits superior photoelectrochemical activity than the TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photoanode prepared without using polydopamine and the pristine TiO 2 photoanode, presenting an improvement in the maximal power density by 8.7 % and 70.4 %, respectively. In addition, the effect of the adsorption time of the protonated g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets is also studied. It is shown that an excessive amount of the protonated g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets by increasing the adsorption time leads to more serious recombination and thereby decreases the photoanode performance. This study provides a novel and efficient way to prepare composite photoanode for photoelectrochemical applications.

Enhanced nitrate reduction in hypotrophic waters with integrated photocatalysis and biodegradation

Bingjie Xue,Li Tian,Yaqi Liu,Lingxiu Peng,Waheed Iqbal,Liangzhong Li,Yanping Mao

Addressing nitrate contamination in water bodies is a critical environmental challenge, and Intimately Coupling Photocatalysis and Biodegradation (ICPB) presents a promising solution. However, there is still debate about the effectiveness of ICPB in reducing nitrate under hypotrophic conditions. Further research is needed to understand its microbial metabolic mechanism and the functional changes in bacterial structure. Here we explored microbial metabolic mechanisms and changes in bacterial structure in ICPB reactors integrating a meticulously screened TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with biofilm. We achieved a 26.3% increase in nitrate reduction using 12.2% less organic carbon compared to traditional biodegradation methods. Metagenomic analysis of the microbial communities in ICPB reactors revealed evolving metabolic pathways conducive to nitrate reduction. This research not only elucidates the photocatalytic mechanism behind nitrate reduction in hypotrophic conditions but also provides genomic insights that pave the way for alternative approaches in water remediation technologies.

Architectural engineering of yolk-shell TiO2@g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunctions via a peroxidation strategy for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Dongfeng Sun,Jiaxin Liu,Yu Kang,Yanning Qu,Yuan Yu,Shukai Ding,Guohui Dong

The widespread application of TiO 2 in photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution is severely hampered by its wide bandgap and rapid charge carrier recombination. Herein, a well-defined yolk-shell TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterojunction was rationally engineered via a facile peroxidation-assisted strategy to significantly enhance photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The synthesis included stepwise fabrication of a TiO 2 @SiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 dual-core–shell intermediate, followed by selective etching of the sacrificial SiO 2 interlayer to form the tailored hollow structure. This unique architecture enhances light harvesting via internal scattering, shortens carrier migration distance and facilitates charge separation relying on the spatially confined ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 shell. The optimized TCN-2 photocatalyst achieves a prominent H 2 evolution rate of 134 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light, which is 6.4 times that of pure TiO 2 . Systematic characterizations (XRD, XPS, TEM, UV–Vis DRS, PL, TRPL, photoelectrochemical and Mott-Schottky analyses) verify the successful heterojunction formation, efficient interfacial charge transfer and favorable internal electric field for S-scheme carrier migration. This work offers a controllable strategy for advanced yolk-shell heterostructures and highlights architectural engineering’s pivotal role in realizing photonic-electronic synergy for high-efficiency solar fuel generation.

Effect of TiO2 crystal phase on the construction of TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient sunlight photodegradation of naphthalene

Yu Huang,Xinyang Xu,Guangjian Fan,Xiaoxuan Zhu,Lin Zhu,Xi Chen

The effect of TiO 2 crystal phase on the photocatalytic properties of TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photocatalyst under sunlight irradiation was investigated through experiments and theoretical calculations. Results reveal that for TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photocatalyst, anatase phase TiO 2 can adjust the band edge positions to ensure the generation of strongly oxidizing radical species (·O 2- and ·OH), and rutile phase TiO 2 can effectively reduce the band gap to more efficiently utilize sunlight. Consequently, the combination of g-C 3 N 4 with P25 TiO 2 composed of both anatase and rutile phases is the most favorable combination for sunlight-driven photocatalyst among the obtained three TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photocatalyst. P25 TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 form a type-II/type-II heterostructure with stepped heterojunction and concave heterojunction. The P/CN photocatalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity with degradation efficiencies for naphthalene reaching 100% within 120 min of sunlight irradiation, as well as considerable stability. The combination of P25 TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 has shown significant potentials in improving the separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, as well as enhancing the utilization of sunlight in photocatalytic process. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of highly active TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photocatalyst for the effective treatment of naphthalene from water.

In-situ self-assembly of Z-scheme TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance for degrading phenolic pollutants

Ming Yi,Jiangwei Shang,Yunqing Liu,Xiuwen Cheng

In recent years, eliminating impurities from wastewater has become increasingly crucial. Photocatalytic technology has become a viable strategy for degrading organic pollutants. This study created novel Z-scheme TiO 2 -modified g-C 3 N 4 using a solvent-tunable, two-step method. The optimized TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 -Et/vis system demonstrated a removal efficiency of 94.4 % for acetaminophen (ATP) within 40 min and 91.0 % for methylparaben (MPB) within 100 min. Furthermore, the system maintained 92.7 % ATP degradation efficiency after five cycles, indicating excellent recoverability and sustainability. Photochemical tests and mechanistic studies revealed that solvent modulation and TiO 2 modification increased the specific surface area and facilitated the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions. These heterojunctions effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhanced the degradation efficiency of organic pollutants, primarily driven by •O 2 − . LC-MS analysis found the intermediates of ATP and MPB, and several potential routes of degradation were suggested. This work sheds fresh light on the production of high-performance TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nanoparticles for applications related to energy and the environment.
