Ratcheting behavior of UHMWPE reinforced by carbon nanofibers (CNF) and hydroxyapatite (HA): Experiment and simulation

Jianhai Wang,Hong Gao,Lilan Gao,Yun Cui,Zhengyuan Song

Uniaxial tensile tests were performed to investigate the mechanical properties of the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with different modification conditions. It was found that the different modification conditions have great influence on the mechanical properties of the UHMWPE. Subsequently, the uniaxial ratcheting behaviors of the UHMWPE/CNF and UHMWPE/HA composite materials were observed under the stress-controlled cyclic tensile condition at room temperature. The dependence of uniaxial ratcheting of composite materials on the mean stress, stress amplitude , stress rate and nano-material content was investigated. The results show that the ratcheting strain and its rate of the two composite materials increase as the mean stress and stress amplitude increase, however, the ratcheting strain and its rate decrease with the increase of the stress rate and nano-material content. Furthermore, it is found that the ratcheting strain of the UHMWPE/HA composite material is more remarkable than that of the UHMWPE/CNF composite material. A new viscoplastic constitutive model is proposed to describe the ratcheting behavior of the UHMWPE composite materials. In this model, a new viscosity function and modified kinematic hardening law were employed. Comparison of simulation and experimental results shows that the simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Remarkable Promotion Effect of Sulfation over the SiO2-Supported Vanadium-Oxide-Based Catalysts for UHMWPE

Yulong Jin,Ning Zhao,Ruihua Cheng,Xuelian He,Zhen Liu,Boping Liu

The effects of sulfation on VO x /SiO 2 –MO y (M = Al, Zr, or Ti) are systemically studied for the synthesis of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), showing that the activity remains stable under the investigated polymerization temperature ( T p ) from 70 to 90 °C, and is almost doubled after sulfation. According to the results of NH 3 –TPD, pyridine-adsorption-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the enhancement effect in activity is likely related to the promoted acidity of the catalysts and the increased electron deficiency of the V center. Remarkable cocatalyst dependence is found and has the priority of diethylaluminum chloride (DEAC) > ethylaluminum sesquichloride > triisobutylaluminum > triethylaluminum, and the highest activity of 5200 kg PE mol −1 V could be obtained with DEAC as cocatalyst. The viscosity average molecular weight ( M v ) of the PEs can be regulated from 3 to 5 × 10 6 g mol −1 by decreasing T p from 90 to 70 °C. Based on the results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) annealing experiments, highly entangled UHMWPE is produced.

One pot synthesis of bimodal UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends with Cr/V bimetallic catalysts

Yulong Jin,Ning Zhao,Ruihua Cheng,Xuelian He,Zhen Liu,Dalin Dong,Yuezhen Bin,Xiaowei Chen,Liangbin Li,Boping Liu

Bimodal ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in-reactor blends (IRBs) are produced by the bimetallic catalysts, which are synthesized through co-supporting silylchromate and vanadium-oxide-based catalysts on silica or alumina, zirconia and titania-modified silica. After support modification, the activities of the catalysts for ethylene polymerization are substantially enhanced. The IRBs produced by the modified catalysts also contain more UHMWPE and low-molecular-weight polyethylene (LMWPE) fractions, and have much broader molecular weight distribution (MWD). The homogeneous nature of the IRBs is preliminarily confirmed by the differential scanning calorimetry melting curves, showing unique melting peak in both nascent and recrystallized states. The rheological results reflect that the viscosity of the IRBs is reduced more or less when compared with UHMWPE. The distinct elastic dominance of the IRBs is also observed, implying the UHMWPE characteristics in the IRBs. In addition, the intimate mixing of the IRBs is further verified by the similar slopes of Han curves for the polyethylene (PE) samples. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Modification of UHMWPE porous fibers by acrylic acid and its adsorption kinetics for Cu2+ removal

Wan Caixia,Cao Tian,Li Jing,Lv Fei,Zhang Wenhua,Li Liangbin

Polyacrylic acid-grafted ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE- g -PAA) fibers were prepared by radiation-induced grafting of acrylic acid onto UHMWPE porous fibers and were examined for Cu 2+ removal from aqueous solutions. The developed fibers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanics test, scanning electron microscopy and energetic dispersive spectroscopy analysis. It was demonstrated that the UHMWPE fibers were modified successfully with grafted acrylic acid, which conferred excellent hydrophilic performance to UHMWPE porous fibers. The mechanics test indicated that considerable mechanical strength (~0.4 GPa) still reserved for the UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers in spite of somewhat radiation degradation. The high-strength, hydrophilic and porous natures render UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers promising as economical adsorbent in wastewater treatment. Prepared under different radiation dose and different degree of grafting of polyacrylic acid (PAA), the adsorption kinetics of the UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers was investigated using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The results reveal a large adsorption capacity of 63 mg g −1 for the UHMWPE- g -PAA fibers and the adsorption behavior follows perfectly a pseudo-second-order kinetics model regarding the Cu 2+ solution adsorption.

Ultrathin and Super Strong UHMWPE Supported Composite Anion Exchange Membranes with Outstanding Fuel Cells Performance

Wei Yuan,Lingping Zeng,Ying Li,Jianchuan Wang,Xi Wang,Qiang Liao,Li Li,Zidong Wei

For high-performance anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), the anion exchange membrane (AEMs) should be as thin as possible to reduce the ohmic resistance. However, the mechanical stability of ultrathin AEMs cannot be guaranteed, as well as a huge risk of gas (H 2 &O 2 ) permeation. In this work, composite AEMs based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) are prepared by in situ bulk polymerization. The as-prepared composite membranes can be as thin as 4 µm, and possess super high strength beyond 150 MPa. It also shows extremely low hydrogen permeation, low water uptake, low dimensional swelling, high conductivity, and good alkaline stability. In addition, the fuel cell performance based on the ultrathin composite AEMs exhibits outstanding peak power density of 1014 and 534 mW cm −2 for H 2 -O 2 and H 2 -Air (CO 2 -free) at 65 °C, respectively, as well as good short-term durability.

Particle size effects on silyl-chromate/VOx/silica bimetallic catalyst for UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends

Yu Du,Hang Tao,Yang Yang,Changzhi Su,Junrong Wang,Yongnian Wang,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

In this work, four kinds of silica with similar textural properties but different particle size (PS) from 6 to 60 μm were selected as support to prepare silyl-chromate/VO x /silica bimetallic catalysts for ethylene polymerization, thus making it possible to conduct convincing investigation on the effects of catalyst PS over catalytic behaviors and polymer properties. It is found, owing to mass- and heat-transfer limitations, the catalysts with smaller PS showed higher initial activity, while the deactivation in the later stage was more remarkable. Meanwhile, catalysts with smaller PS synthesized bimodal ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/high-density polyethylene in-reactor blends (UHMWPE/HDPE IRBs) with higher molecular weight ( MW ) and narrower molecular weight distribution (MWD). Four PE sample couples with MW increasing from 5 × 10 5 to 10 × 10 5 g mol −1 and PS from 40 to 460 μm were selected for tensile and rheological tests. For each couple with similar MW and MWD, the sample with smaller PS always had larger tensile strength and breaking elongation. The cryogenically fractured surface of the samples made by smaller PE particles showed fewer delamination defects and unfused small particles. The rheological results indicate that higher homogeneity was achieved for the sample with smaller PS, which was reflected by the unexpected higher viscosity and storage modulus.

Economical fabrication of multifunctional UHMWPE fibre composite paper for electromagnetic shielding, thermal camouflage and green heating

Xinyu Yao,Hong Zhang

To address the complex integrated challenges of electromagnetic interference (EMI), infrared (IR) detection exposure, and extreme cold environments, it is critical to develop materials that integrate EMI shielding, IR stealth, and active heating functions. However, the infrared stealth function is in stark contradiction to the electromagnetic/optical heating effect, and it is difficult to control the thickness of the material. Therefore, finding solutions to the aforementioned problems poses a challenge for both the materials and the structure. In this study, a multi-layer structure composite paper of UHMWPE/Fe 3 O 4 /MXene is fabricated. By enhancing spatial steric hindrance and regulating buoyancy, we increase the contact distance between ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres, reduce their buoyancy in aqueous media, and achieve their natural sedimentation and uniform dispersion. The PE paper exhibits EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of up to 29.6 dB (in the X band) due to the differentiated interlayer impedance of the multifunctional structure. The mechanical strength of the MXene layer is enhanced by the fibre layer, resulting in a paper tensile strength of 14.87 MPa. The dense MXene layers arranged along the surface orientation have enhanced the IR stealth performance of the PE paper (maximum temperature difference of 35.23 °C from a 70 °C heat source) and photothermal capability (peak temperature of 81.5 °C for infrared light and 58.5 °C for natural light). All the functions are achieved through 0.44 mm. It holds significant potential to serve as a promising material for the multifunctional protection of both electronic devices and personnel.

Interfacial Cross-Linking-Driven Hierarchical Crystal–Amorphous Design Enables UHMWPE with Superior Mechanical and Thermal Resistance

Hui Jing,Laiyao Geng,Youquan Ling,Yinfu Luo,Mei Liang,Zhengguang Heng,Huawei Zou,Xiaoqiang Pan,Ying Wu,Shaoyu Qiu,Runliu Qian

Polyethylene is widely used as a matrix resin for nuclear radiation protection due to its lightweight, high economic efficiency, and high hydrogen content. However, the intensification of the linear molecular chain motion of polyethylene and the sharp deterioration of mechanical properties at high temperatures have severely limited its application. In this study, polyethylene composites with a hierarchical crystal–amorphous structure have been prepared using the interfacial cross-linking strategy. The enhancement of the mechanical and heat-resistant properties of the composites was realized by modulating the crystalline-cross-linked structure. The intrinsic mechanism of the performance enhancement lies in the construction of a micrometer-scale interfacial three-dimensional cross-linking skeleton, which can effectively inhibit the slip of molecular chains. Meanwhile, the interfacial cross-linking technique greatly preserves the internal nanoscale highly crystalline structure, which promotes improvement of thermodynamic properties. This method improves the heat resistance of the material without compromising the neutron shielding properties. Compared with the uncross-linked polyethylene, the tensile strength increased by 67.1% and creep resistance by 40.2% at 70 °C. The Vicat softening point was increased to 136.6 °C. At a thickness of 10 mm, the neutron transmittance of the cross-linked polyethylene was 81.87%, showing good neutron shielding capability. Interfacial cross-linking-driven hierarchical crystal–amorphous technique is a simple and effective method for the preparation of highly heat-resistant polyethylene shielding materials.

Surface modification of UHMWPE fibers with chlorination and polydopamine for enhancing the mechanical properties of composites

Rui Yuan,Zheng Chu,Xiaolian Wu,Fanmin Kong,Guodong Jiang,Yucai Shen,Dong Zhao

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers had many excellent mechanical properties, but their applications in composites were limited due to the weak interfacial adhesion between UHMWPE fibers with non-polar methylene and resin matrix. This paper explored an efficient method for the damage-free modification of fibers by chloride grafting followed by polydopamine (PDA) deposition to obtain UHMWPE-Cl-PDA fiber while maintaining the excellent mechanical properties of the fiber. The chemical components of surface treated fibers were observed by XPS and FTIR-ATR, and the results proved that the fiber surface has been successfully chlorinated and then coated with PDA layer. The surface morphologies of fibers measured by SEM showed the rough surface of UHMWPE-Cl-PDA fibers was beneficed to anchor the resin matrix. The different mechanical properties of composites were studied, such as interfacial shear strength (IFSS), impact strength, flexural strength and modulus, especially the IFSS between UHMWPE-Cl-PDA and epoxy matrix and the impact strength of UHMWPE-Cl-PDA composite were increased by 29.1% and 53.8%, respectively, compared with UHMWPE fibers deposited by PDA.

Bio-inspired copper ion-chelated chitosan coating modified UHMWPE fibers for enhanced interfacial properties of composites

Jingde Yang,Binjie Zhang,Li Wang,Wenda Song,Bo Li,Zhengzhi Mu,Yufei Wang,Shuang Zhang,Junqiu Zhang,Shichao Niu,Zhiwu Han,Luquan Ren

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers are broadly applied in lightweight and high-strength composite fiber materials. However, the development of UHMWPE fibers is limited by their smooth and chemically inert surfaces. To address the issues, a modified UHMWPE fibers material has been fabricated through the chelation reaction between Cu 2+ and chitosan coatings within the surface of fibers after plasma treatment, which is inspired by the hardening mechanism, a crosslinked network between metal ions and proteins/polysaccharides of the tips and edges in arthropod-specific cuticular tools. The coatings improve the surface wettability and interfacial bonding ability, which are beneficial in extending the application range of UHMWPE fibers. More importantly, compared to the unmodified UHMWPE fiber cloths, the tensile property of the modified fiber cloths is increased by 18.89% without damaging the strength, which is infrequent in modified UHMWPE fibers. Furthermore, the interlaminar shear strength and fracture toughness of the modified fibers laminate are increased by 37.72% and 135.90%, respectively. These improvements can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the surface activity and the tiny bumps of the modified UHMWPE fibers. Hence, this work provides a more straightforward and less damaging idea of fiber modification for manufacturing desirable protective and medical materials.

Nanoscale effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on the rheological behaviors of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)

Yang Sui,Yi Cui,Peng Wei,Chuanbo Cong,Xiaoyu Meng,Hai-Mu Ye,Qiong Zhou

Considering the molar mass between entanglements to be an intrinsic property of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), the number of entanglements per chain increases with increasing molar mass, correspondingly making the UHMWPE intractable. Herein, we dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles with different characteristics into UHMWPE solutions to disentangle the molecular chains. Compared with the UHMWPE pure solution, the viscosity of the mixture solution declines by 91.22%, and the critical overlap concentration increases from 1 wt% to 1.4 wt%. A rapid precipitation method was utilized to obtain UHMWPE and UHMWPE/TiO2 composites from the solutions. The melting index of UHMWPE/TiO2 is 68.85 mg, which is in sharp contrast to that of UHMWPE which is 0 mg. We characterized the microstructures of UHMWPE/TiO2 nanocomposites using TEM, SAXS, DMA, and DSC. Accordingly, this significant improvement in processability contributed to the reduction of entanglements and a schematic model was proposed to explain the mechanism by which nanoparticles disentangle molecular chains. Simultaneously, the composite demonstrated better mechanical properties than UHMWPE. In summary, we provide a strategy to promote the processability of UHMWPE without sacrificing its outstanding mechanical properties.

Pyrogallol adhesion and mineralized bionic hybrid layer decorating UHMWPE fiber for enhancing the interfacial and mechanical properties

Kui Wang,Lu Shen,Xiang Ji,Jiale Gong,Chenchen Cui,Jiahong Xie,Liang Hong

An organic–inorganic bionic hybrid layer was created to improve the interfacial and mechanical properties of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber-reinforced epoxy (UHMWPE/Epoxy) composites by utilizing the adhesion of pyrogallol and the mineralization of Cu 2+ ions. The findings indicated that the effective application of the hybrid layer introduced a significant quantity of polar groups and inorganic Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 particles. Mineralization treatment remarkably increased the fiber’s surface energy from 20.64 mN/m to 31.24 mN/m, achieving 51 % improvement in wettability. The interfacial interactions between the organic–inorganic hybrid layer and epoxy resin were markedly enhanced, increasing the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) from 2.38 ± 0.28 MPa to 7.62 ± 0.74 MPa. Compared with the pristine composite, the modified UHMWPE/Epoxy exhibited up to 63 %, 69 %, and 113 % improvement in mechanical performance, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and transverse fiber bundle tension (TFBT), respectively. Upon application of an external force, the bionic hybrid layer facilitated numerous deflections and intricate crack paths at the interface. As a result, a uniform and swift force transmission was established from the epoxy resin to the fiber.
