A WOx mediated interface boosts the activity and stability of Pt-catalyst for alkaline water splitting

Di Yin,Yun-Dong Cao,Dong-Feng Chai,Lin-Lin Fan,Guang-Gang Gao,Ming-Liang Wang,Hong Liu,Zhenhui Kang

Water splitting offers a clean way to produce hydrogen, in which, an efficient catalyst interface is one of the key factors to boot the activity and stability. Here, using polyoxotungstate (POT) as precursor, Pt-based bifunctional catalysts were fabricated, which are composed of Pt, WO x and graphene (Pt-WO 3−x @rGO). The Pt-WO 3−x @rGO (1.58% Pt-loading) catalyst shows an enhanced catalytic activity, namely, overpotentials of 37 mV for Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 174 mV for Oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and achieves a working voltage of 1.55 V at 10 mA cm −2 for water splitting in alkaline-medium. Electrochemical analyses and DFT calculation suggest that the WO x mediated interface (Pt 0 ⋅⋅⋅O − W) plays a key role to enhance the electron transfer and reduce the activation energy for both HER and OER. Moreover, this kind of Pt 0 ⋅⋅⋅O − W interface enhances the Pt based catalyst stability in alkaline-medium significantly.

Selective depolymerization of lignin into low-oxygen aromatic monomers over hydrothermal synthesized Pd/WOx-ZrO2 catalyst

Tao Ruan,Lifeng Li,Xinping Ouyang,Xueqing Qiu

Depolymerizing lignin is one of the most effective approaches for its high-valued utilization. However, the high oxygen contents in lignin depolymerized products cause the low calorific value, and hence limit their application in liquid fuels. A high efficiency 0.5 wt% Pd/WO x -ZrO 2 catalyst was designed and applied in the process for the depolymerization of lignin in this work. The effect of preparation methodology of catalyst support, the molar ratio of W to Zr, and Pd loading on both the structure of catalyst and catalytic activity to lignin depolymerization were investigated. It was found that the catalyst prepared by hydrothermal method exhibited a large specific surface area, more uniform distribution of supported Pd, as well as higher acid content and oxygen vacancies, which contributed a good catalytic activity. Moreover, the lower Pd loading and higher dispersion of Pd particles were beneficial for hindering the decrease in the specific surface area of the WO x -ZrO 2 support, and hence increasing the acidic sites of the catalyst, which also promoted both the cleavage of C-O bonds in lignin subunits and the alkylation of depolymerized products. When the catalyst prepared with 1:1 of W/Zr molar ratio and 0.5 wt% of Pd loading contributed to higher yields of bio-oil and aromatic monomers, achieving 83.30% and 35.49%, respectively. Among the aromatic monomers, 87.86% were demethoxylated alkylphenols, which significantly reduced the oxygen content of the depolymerization products.

The synergistic effects of Ru and WOx for aqueous-phase hydrogenation of glucose to lower diols

Yi Liu,Yuliu Liu,Yi Zhang

Aqueous-phase hydrogenation of glucose to lower diols (ethylene glycol (EG), 1, 2-propylene glycol (PG), and butanediol (BDO)) over bi-functional Ru-W supported catalysts was investigated in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor. A variety of catalysts based on different supports including mesoporous SiO 2 , activated carbon (AC), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), and bulk WO 3 were compared and examined by N 2 physisorption, H 2 chemisorption, XRD, TEM, ICP, H 2 -TPR, in-situ / ex-situ XPS, NH 3 -TPD, and Raman spectra. The results indicate that the lower diols yield is highly dependent on the synergistic effect of Ru metal sites and WO x acid sites, in other words, strongly depending on the competitive reactions of the glucose. Abundant W 4+ and Ru° sites on Ru-W/SiO 2 catalysts with large specific surface area effectively catalyze the selective cleavage of the C C bonds in glucose and subsequent hydrogenation to lower diols, resulting in 100% glucose conversion as well as highest diols selectivity (87.3%) over 50 h reaction at 478 K and 4 MPa H 2 . Meanwhile, the Ru/WO 3 with much lower surface area forms more W 5+ species, which is advantageous to producing more EG products (55.9%) at the same reaction conditions.

Construction of highly active Pt-WOx interfacial sites for efficient hydrogenolysis of fatty acids to alkanes

Xincheng Cao,Jiaxi Li,Yao Zhang,Shiyu Wu,Yuwei Chen,Jun Ye,Xiaolei Zhang,Junming Xu,Jianchun Jiang

Redox-active WOₓ support regulates Pt dispersion and metal–support interactions. • Abundant Pt–WOₓ interfacial sites enable efficient fatty acid hydrogenolysis. • The high activity results from the synergy between Pt, oxygen vacancy and Brønsted acid sites. • The studies provide insights into the active sites of hydrogenolysis of carboxylic acids. The uniform dispersion of noble metals on the surface of metal oxides has attracted increasing attention because it can enrich interfacial active sites and often induce unexpected catalytic behaviors. While extensive efforts have been devoted to enhancing metal dispersion, the role of the support itself remains comparatively underexplored. Here, we report how the redox properties of the support (WO 2.72 ) can be used to improve the metal dispersion and stability, enabling remarkably efficient hydrogenolysis of bio-derived fatty acids. Using stearic acid as a model substrate, the Pt/WO x (R) catalyst, synthesized through the in-situ reduction of WO 2.72 , achieved 95% conversion with 97% selectivity to n -octadecane ( n -C 18 ) under mild conditions of 200 °C and 1.0 MPa H 2 . In sharp contrast, the conventional Pt/WO x (C) catalyst prepared from WO 3 exhibited negligible activity, affording only 5% conversion under identical conditions. Detailed characterization revealed that Pt nanoparticles were highly dispersed on the WO x support surface in Pt/WO x (R), generating abundant Pt−WO x interfacial sites that results in high catalytic activity. Moreover, due to the anchoring effect of defective WO x support on the Pt species, this allows the Pt/WO x (R) catalysts to retain its activity over three cycles without obvious deactivation. This research presents an effective strategy and valuable mechanistic insights for the rational design of highly efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalysts with abundant metal-support interfacial sites. Oxygen-Deficient Tungsten Oxide (WOx) Nanobelts with pH-Sensitive Degradation for Enhanced Sonodynamic Therapy of Cancer

Yangkai Zhou,Nailin Yang,Fei Gong,Yuanjie Wang,Xiaoyuan Yang,Yizhi Dai,Qiao Yu,Li Wang,Weifan Chen,Mingpeng Zhuo,Liang Cheng

The further bioapplications of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) were hindered by the inadequate efficiency and poor degradability of sonosensitizers and the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME). Therefore, it is ideal to develop pH-sensitive sonosensitizers that generate abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) and rapidly degrade in a neutral environment while slowly degrading in an acidic environment to reduce their long-term toxicity. Herein, the defective tungsten oxide nanobelts (WOx NBs) were developed as a type of pH-sensitive and biodegradable sonosensitizers with a high SDT efficiency and low toxicity for enhanced SDT. The defective oxygen sites of WOx NBs could inhibit the recombination of electrons and holes, making WOx NBs promising sonosensitizers that could generate abundant ROS under ultrasound (US) irradiation. Enhanced by the catalase (CAT) that reacted with H2O2 to generate O2, the WOx NBs exhibited better SDT performance against 4T1 cells in both normoxic and hypoxic environments. In addition, the WOx NBs could degrade by releasing protons (H+), resulting in intracellular acidification and inhibited cell motility that further enhanced the therapeutic effects of SDT. Assisted with CAT and ALG for hypoxia refinement and better retention, the WOx NBs enabled effective SDT and antimetastasis against 4T1 tumors in vivo. Most importantly, the WOx NBs could degrade rapidly in normal tissues but slowly in an acidic TME, which was favorable for their fast clearance, without any obvious long-term toxicity. Our work developed defective WOx NBs with a high SDT efficiency and pH-sensitive degradation for enhanced SDT, which extended the biomedical application of tungsten-based nanomaterials and the further development of SDT.

Chemoselective nitrilation of dimethyl adipate with ammonia over carbon encapsulated WOx catalysts under continuous flow conditions

Guang-Rong Ding,Yao-Feng Wang,Guo-Yi Duan,Tao Guo,Xiao-Feng Xu,Chun-Shan Li,Bao-Hua Xu

Adiponitrile (ADN) is a key intermediate for the industrial production of polyamides represented by nylon 66. In this study, the chemoselective nitrilation of dimethyl adipate (DMA) with ammonia (NH3) under continuous flow conditions was studied on carbon encapsulated oxygen-deficient WOx<3 catalysts (WOx@C/C). A combination of dispersed anchor sites at a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) template, the porosity of active carbon support, and the calcination procedure allows the formation of effective WOx@C-600-0.25-A1, persisting high BET specific surface area and WO2.83 active phase of appropriate size. It delivers ADN and methyl 5-cyanopentanoate (MCP) with an excellent selectivity of up to 95.8% at a weight hourly space velocity of DMA (WHSVDMA) of ∼0.64 gDMA gcat−1 h−1 and an NH3/DMA molar ratio of 13 : 1. A tandem reaction route from DMA to ADN via MCP was elucidated, wherein the second nitrilation of MCP to ADN proceeds very slowly. Besides, both CDMA and TONADN/TONMCP are significantly influenced by the physical dispersion and size of the active WO2.83 phase in WOx@C/C.

NUCLEAR RNA POLYMERASE D1 is essential for tomato embryogenesis and desiccation tolerance in seeds

Yixuan Feng,Yiming Wang,Tai Wang,Lingtong Liu

Plant-unique RNA polymerase IV (RNA Pol IV) governs the establishment of small RNA (sRNA)-directed DNA methylation (RdDM). In dicotyledon, elevated RdDM activity is often associated with embryogenesis; however, the loss of RdDM frequently results in indiscernible phenotypes. Here, we report that the absence of SlNRPD1 , encoding the largest subunit of RNA Pol IV, leads to diminished RdDM and abnormal embryogenesis in tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ). Hypermethylation at pericentric transposable elements (TEs) and a burst of 21/22-nt siRNA from the distal and pericentric genes are observed in slnrpd1 embryos. The specific activation of endoribonuclease Dicer-like 2 ( SlDCL2b / c / d ) is correlated with 21/22-nt sRNA accumulation. Auxin and WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) signaling gene expression is altered by mCHH hypomethylation, which may lead to defective embryos. Due to improper maturation, the slnrpd1 embryos cannot withstand post-harvest desiccation. This study provides insights into how DNA methylation regulates plant embryogenesis.

W-induced formation of Ir-WOx(W) flattened nanoparticles anchored on TiN support for acidic oxygen evolution

Bosheng Zhang,Na Zhou,Panchao Zhao,Junqiu Guo,Hemu Pi,Yuanbin Qin

W induces flattened Ir-WO x (W) nanoparticles for high Ir utilization. • Alloy-heterojunctional composite interfaces tune Ir electronic structure for OER. • W optimizes OER intermediates and restrains Ir agglomeration to amplify Ir catalytic activity. • TiN-supported Ir-WO x flattened nanoparticles synthesized through a green approach. • Enhanced acidic OER activity vs commercial IrO 2 . Reducing the Ir loading in anode reaction catalysts is crucial for the scalable commercialization of proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. Herein, W-induced formation of Ir-WO x (W) flattened nanoparticles with alloy-heterojunctional composite structure anchored on TiN support (Ir-WO x (W)/TiN) catalyst via a spray drying and heat treatment process is designed. For Ir-WO x (W)/TiN catalyst, TiN serves as the catalyst support, effectively achieving high dispersion of Ir as nanostructure on the support and enhancing the atomic utilization of Ir. W induces the formation of Ir-WO x (W) flattened nanoparticles to further improve atomic utilization efficiency of Ir and optimize its surface electronic structure during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Meanwhile, alloy-heterojunctional composite interfaces formed between Ir-WO x (W) and Ir-Ti can further optimize the adsorption/desorption capability of Ir toward oxygen-intermediates, lowering the energy barrier of the rate-determining step in the OER and enhancing the overall activity of catalyst, which is confirmed by a DFT calculation. The Ir-WO x (W)/TiN catalytic material demonstrates excellent OER performance, achieving overpotential of 221 mV and 296 mV at current densities of 10 mA·cm −2 and 50 mA·cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, respectively, with a low Ir loading of 0.15 mg·cm −2 . Furthermore, this work demonstrates a green and scalable synthetic route without wastewater generation.

Tuning Ni-WOx@C Catalysts via Pyrolysis-Driven Structural Evolution for Conversion of Cellulose into Ethylene Glycol

Huang Haiyun,Chen Lungang,Zhang Xinghua,Zhang Qi,Zhuang Xiuzheng,Ma Longlong

Effective utilization of lignocellulosic biomass as value-added fuels and chemicals is of great significance for achieving the dual goals of sustainable biorefinery and carbon neutrality. Here, Ni-WOx@C catalysts were synthesized for efficiently catalytic conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol (EG). The catalyst was prepared through a one-step pyrolysis method by using citric acid and SiO 2 as the carbon source and structural template, respectively. A series of controlled experiments demonstrated that the pyrolysis temperature and the particle size of the SiO 2 template significantly affected the physicochemical properties of the catalyst, including the surface morphology, active sites provided by the loaded metals, and the distribution of Lewis acid sites. The optimized catalysts of Ni-WOx@C 600−2 , which was prepared by the pyrolysis at 600 °C with a 2 μm SiO 2 template, delivered the best performance characterized by its high specific surface area (124.86 m 2 /g), well-defined pores, as well as the cooperation between metallic species and Lewis acid sites. Under the optimized reaction conditions (220 °C, 4 MPa H 2 , 3 h), this as-prepared catalyst achieved nearly complete cellulose conversion (> 99%) and EG yield of 60.1%. Generally speaking, the design of Ni-WOx-based catalyst provides new insight for effective catalysis and has considerable application potential in cellulose conversion. Graphical

Oxygen-vacancy mediated acidity and redox properties on WOx/Cu-doped CeO2 for the removal of NOx

Zhifei Hao,Guoquan Liu,Nan Ma,He Zhang,Yi Li,Yuguo Xia,Dongpeng Zhang,Sihui Zhan

Acidity and redox properties of the catalyst are two crucial factors affecting the performance of NH 3 -SCR. Herein, we design a novel WO x /Cu-CeO 2 oxide catalyst in which the WO x species are highly dispersed on the {111}/{100}-terminated surface of Cu-doped CeO 2 nanospheres , which exhibits great deNO x activity advantage and wide operating temperature window (200–400 °C, over 85% NO x conversion with a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 60,000 h −1 ), as well as good sulfur resistance and N 2 selectivity . The relationship among the composition, acidity and redox properties of the WO x /Cu-CeO 2 catalyst is established in the NH 3 -SCR reaction. The combined experimental studies and spectroscopic characterization reveal that the introduction of Cu into the lattice of CeO 2 not only increases the surface Ce 3+ and oxygen vacancy concentration but also provides more sites for capture and dispersion of WO x species, thus mediating and improving the Lewis and Brønsted acid sites and reducibility of catalyst. XPS and DFT calculations further demonstrate that electronic interaction between WO x and Cu-doped CeO 2 is enhanced duo to the existence of interactions of short-range Ce-O-Cu and Ce-O-W. Moreover, the NH 3 -SCR reaction over WO x /Cu-CeO 2 may follow both Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal reaction pathway according to the in situ DRIFTS.

Interface-engineered ZrO2@W2C-WOx heterojunctions with a built-in electric field for selective, 1O2-dominated oxidative desulfurization

Huirong Zhang,Xueer Luo,Yang Bai,Bin Li,Hao Fu,Kunlin Wu,Bo Wang,Yun Zhang

The non-selective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals often plagues heterogeneous oxidation, critically limiting its chemoselectivity for applications like oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Here, we demonstrate a strategy to program the H 2 O 2 activation pathway by designing a ZrO 2 @W 2 C-WO x heterostructure. Interfacial electron transfer from ZrO 2 to W 2 C establishes a built-in electric field, inducing an amorphous, mixed-valent WO x shell. This unique electronic interface enables synergistic dual-site activation of H 2 O 2 at adjacent Zr and WO x motifs, promoting a surface peroxo-intermediate pathway that selectively yields singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). The catalyst exhibits a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 470 h −1 for ODS under mild conditions. Crucially, it demonstrates exceptional chemoselectivity, with reactive oxygen species (ROS) partitioning dominated by 1 O 2 ( 1 O 2  ≫ •O 2 −  > •OH). This selectivity ensures robust performance across high sulfur loadings (500–2000 ppm S) and in the presence of fuel-relevant interferents. The catalyst's proven stability and low leaching highlight its industrial potential. By engineering an interfacial charge-transfer heterojunction with a built-in electric field coupled with a redox-active WO x shell, this work provides a blueprint for steering ROS generation toward non-radical pathways for precise, selective oxidation.

Fabricating highly-dispersed W-O-Si structure via silanols modulation over WOx/SiO2 catalyst enables efficient olefin metathesis

Haoxuan Tan,Jianhao Jiao,Yun Zu,Qiang Li,Yucai Qin,Ye Yang,Kai He,Zhongxing Geng,Lijuan Song

Silica-supported tungsten oxides (WO x /SiO 2 ) as industrial catalysts are widely applied for the metathesis of ethylene and butylene to propylene, yet often suffer from limited dispersion and stability due to ill-defined interactions between tungsten species and surface silanols microenvironment of silica support. In this work, the type and density of specific surface silanols in silica were successfully tailored by precisely controlling thermal pretreatment temperature. Multiple advanced characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that vicinal-silanol-rich surface microenvironments were strongly associated with the formation of highly dispersed and stable isolated dioxo W (VI) -O-Si structure, while effectively suppressing the formation of less-active W-O-W aggregates. Under the comparable conditions, the optimized WO x /SiO 2 ‑ 550 catalyst with rich W (VI) -O-Si sites delivered an enviable propylene yield of over 67.9% in the olefin metathesis with a lower deactivation rate (0.069 h −1 ), far outperforming conventional catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated satisfactory long-term stability over 200 h on stream and partial activity recovery upon oxidative regeneration. Mechanistic studies further suggested that the dioxo W (VI) -O-Si structure enhanced the adsorption and activation of olefins and favored the formation of surface species consistent with literature-proposed metal‑carbene intermediates, thereby improving both catalytic activity and propylene selectivity. These findings provide a fundamental understanding and a practical strategy for the rational design of highly-dispersed and stable supported tungsten catalysts for olefin metathesis.
