2D hybrid perovskites (HPs) have great potential for high-performance X-ray detection due to their strong radiation absorption and flexible structure. However, there remains a need to explore avenues for enhancing their detection capabilities. Optimizing the detection performance through modification of their structural properties presents a promising strategy. Herein, we explore the impact of modifying the organic spacer layer in two distinct 2D layered HPs, namely, Ruddlesden–Popper (R-MPA)2PbBr4 (R-1, R-MPA = methylphenethylammonium) and (R-MPA)EAPbBr4 (EA = ethylammonium) (R-2) with alternating cation intercalation (ACI), on their X-ray detection performance. The insertion of EA into R-2 results in a flatter inorganic skeleton, narrower spacing, and higher density compared to R-1. This structural modification effectively optimizes carrier transport and X-ray absorption in R-2, enhancing the X-ray detection performance. Notably, R-2 exhibits a polar structure with intrinsic spontaneous polarization, contributing to a bulk photovoltaic of 0.4 V. This feature enables R-2 single-crystal detectors to achieve self-driven X-ray detection with a low detection limit of 82.5 nGy s–1 under a 0 V bias. This work highlights the efficacy of the ACI strategy in structural modification and its significant effect on X-ray detection properties, providing insights for the design and optimization of new materials.

Metal halide perovskites exhibit great promise for utilization in X-ray detection owing to their excellent optoelectronic properties and high X-ray attenuation capabilities. However, fabricating large-area thick films for high-performance perovskite X-ray detection remains challenging. This study develops an in situ crystal growth and fusing-confined approach to prepare high-quality, large-scale perovskite quasi-monocrystalline thick junctions. The perovskite crystals are grown in situ using a highly concentrated perovskite colloidal solution in 2-methoxyethanol. Introducing methylammonium chloride enhances grain reorganization during in situ growth and fusing-confined processes, effectively reducing grain boundaries and surface defects. This allows for the preparation of quasi-monocrystalline thick junctions of large grains (>100 μm) with high crystallinity, uniform orientation, and vertical penetration across the film thickness. Additionally, the carrier mobility and lifetime of the thick junctions are significantly enhanced. The optimized MAPbI3 detectors demonstrate an X-ray sensitivity of 2.6 × 104 μC Gyair–1 cm–2 and an exceptionally low detection limit of 1 nGyair s–1. Furthermore, inspired by a honeycomb structure, these detectors realize X-ray imaging in 64 × 64 pixels through a pixelated separation design, effectively reducing the charge-sharing effect. This study offers valuable insights into the preparation of large-scale perovskite quasi-monocrystalline thick junctions for highly sensitive X-ray detection and imaging applications.

CaZnOS-based semiconductors are the only series of material system discovered that can simultaneously realize a large number of dopant elements to directly fulfill the highly efficient full-spectrum functionality from ultraviolet to near-infrared under the same force/pressure. Nevertheless, owing to the high agglomeration of the high temperature solid phase manufacturing process, which is unable to control the crystal morphology, the application progress is limited. Here, the authors report first that CaZnOS-based fine monodisperse semiconductor crystals with various doping ions are successfully synthesized by a molten salt shielded method in an air environment. This method does not require inert gas ventilation, and therefore can greatly reduce the synthesis cost and more importantly improve the fine control of the crystal morphology, along with the crystals’ dispersibility and stability. These doped semiconductors can not only realize different colors of mechanical-to-optical energy conversion, but also can achieve multicolor luminescence under low-dose X-ray irradiation, moreover their intensities are comparable to the commercial NaI:Tl. They can pave the way to the new fields of advanced optoelectronic applications, such as piezophotonic systems, mechanical energy conversion and harvesting devices, intelligent sensors, and artificial skin as well as X-ray applications.

Multi-energy X-ray detection is sought after for a wide range of applications including medical imaging, security checking and industrial flaw inspection. Perovskite X-ray detectors are superior in terms of high sensitivity and low detection limit, which lays a foundation for multi-energy discrimination. However, the extended capability of the perovskite detector for multi-energy X-ray detection is challenging and has never been reported. Herein we report the design of vertical matrix perovskite X-ray detectors for multi-energy detection, based on the attenuation behavior of X-ray within the detector and machine learning algorithm. This platform is independent of the complex X-ray source components that constrain the energy discrimination capability. We show that the incident X-ray spectra could be accurately reconstructed from the conversion matrix and measured photocurrent response. Moreover, the detector could produce a set of images containing the density-graded information under single exposure, and locate the concealed position for all low-, medium- and high-density substances. Our findings suggest a new generation of X-ray detectors with features of multi-energy discrimination, density differentiation, and contrast-enhanced imaging.

Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) exhibiting intrinsic anomalous photovoltaic (APV) effects have attracted considerable attention due to their exceptional optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties. However, the ionizing radiation-induced APV effect, a promising mechanism for self-powered X-ray detection, remains underexplored in OIHPs. Here, this study reports for the first time the radiation-induced APV in 2D OIHPs for efficient self-driven X-ray detection. Specifically, the 2D chiral alternating cation-intercalated perovskite ( R )-PPA(MOPA)PbBr₄ (where PPA = 1-phenylpropylammonium and MOPA = 3-methoxypropylammonium) demonstrates an intrinsic radiation-induced APV of 4 V, which facilitates the separation and transport of X-ray-generated carriers. Remarkably, leveraging this intrinsic APV, highly efficient X-ray detection is achieved with a high sensitivity of 475 µC Gy⁻¹ cm⁻ 2 at zero bias, surpassing most existing self-powered X-ray detectors. These findings underscore the potential of radiation-responsive APV effects in advanced self-driven X-ray detection and pave the way for future practical applications.

Metal halide perovskite single crystals exhibit a significantly lower defect density and superior charge transport properties compared to polycrystalline materials, demonstrating outstanding performance in X-ray and γ-ray detection. However, the surface defect density of single crystals is substantially higher than that of the bulk, which severely limits the development of perovskite single crystal devices. In this study, we explore a surface passivation strategy for single crystals by constructing a 2D/3D heterojunction on the surface of 3D perovskite single crystals. Specifically, we directly grew a layer of ThMA 2 PbBr 4 with nanometer-scale thickness on the surface of FAPbBr 3 single crystals, which effectively suppressed the formation of secondary phases at the 2D/3D interface and passivated the surface defects of the 3D perovskite single crystals. As a result, the surface trap density was reduced by more than an order of magnitude, and the carrier diffusion coefficient was enhanced by over twofold. When applied to soft X-ray detection, the treated FAPbBr 3 single crystals exhibited a response time that was reduced by two orders of magnitude compared to untreated crystals. The sensitivity is comparable to the best performance of planar structured (M−S−M) soft X-ray detectors. In devices based on the Bi/FAPbBr 3 /Au structure, the dark current density of the treated single crystal device was reduced by an order of magnitude, and an energy resolution of 6.3 % was achieved for 662 keV γ-rays, which was not attainable before treatment.

2D Dion−Jacobson (DJ) perovskite single crystals (PSCs) usually demonstrate better X-ray detection performance than Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) PSCs. However, the mechanism of the improved performance is still elusive. Here, by the aid of strong interactions between dimethylbiguanide (DGA) and PbI 2 , a novel DJ-perovskitoid (DGA)PbI 4 is designed. From the comparison of (DGA)PbI 4 to other 2D PSCs, it is discovered that the tiniest lattice distortion and increased hydrogen bonds in the atom-scaled analysis strengthen lattice rigidity and weaken electron-phonon coupling to suppress disordered scattering of carriers, resulting in significantly improved carrier transport and stability. Therefore, high carrier mobility (78.1 cm 2 V −1 s −1 ) and a pronounced sensitivity of 4869.0 µC Gy air −1 cm −2 are achieved using (DGA)PbI 4 , which are the best in 2D Pb-based PSC devices to date. Finally, the (DGA)PbI 4 devices exhibit good spatial resolution in X-ray imaging and excellent long-term stability to work as a promising candidate for medical diagnostics and nondestructive determination.

The anomalous photovoltaic (APV) effect in organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) has attracted massive interest for developing high-performance optoelectronic devices. However, exploring the ionizing radiation responsive APV effect remains blank, let alone its potential applications. Herein, the unprecedented APV behavior in a 1D lead-free OIHP, (4-AMP)BiI 5 ( ABI , 4-AMP = 4-(aminomethyl)pyridine) under X-ray irradiation is reported, exhibiting a large above-bandgap bulk photovoltage of ≈10 V. Such a strong APV effect is closely related to the intrinsic electric polarization in polar ABI , which acts as the driving force for X-ray-generated carriers’ separation and transport, thus allowing it to be self-powered. As a result, sensitive self-powered X-ray detectors based on high-quality ABI single crystals are successfully fabricated, possessing a high sensitivity of 66.84 µC Gy −1 cm −2 , a low detection limit of 482 nGy s −1 , and superior operational stability. This work first demonstrates the ionizing radiation-responsive APV effect in OIHPs, which further enables passive radiation detection.

Scintillating fibers have been widely used in medical diagnostics, high-energy physics, and industrial inspection. However, the fabrication of scintillating fibers with excellent radiation stability and high luminescence remains a major challenge. Here, we report a new plastic scintillation fiber with Eu (TTA)3(TPPO)2 as the core scintillator (Eu-PSF). The Eu-PSF can avoid the self-absorption phenomenon and has a high light yield of 9000 photons per MeV. The luminescence of Eu-PSF decreases by only about 5% after one hour of X-ray exposure at 0.555 μGy s−1 and 8.325 μGy s−1. Attractively, Eu-PSF has an excellent linear relationship with X-ray dose, with a detection limit of 555 nGy s−1, well below the standard dose for X-ray diagnosis (5.5 μGy s−1). This suggests that Eu-PSF can be used to detect low doses of radiation, particularly in medical diagnosis. In addition, we have conducted X-ray imaging studies using Eu-PSF fiber arrays, demonstrating the feasibility of Eu-PSF for X-ray imaging. Due to the good light conductivity of optical fibers, Eu-PSF has great potential for radiation detection over long distances.

Deep sea mineral analysis with X-rays requires ultra water-stable and large-scale X-ray sensitive materials. Perovskite nanocrystals are promising for X-ray detection. However, their surface defects usually affect luminescence properties and long-time stability. Herein, a strategy combining polymer encapsulation and vitamin doping is proposed in this work. The perovskite nanocrystals are in situ grown in the polymer matrix, which can maintain over 96% of the initial luminous intensity in water and ambient conditions for 480 and 2880 hours, respectively. Moreover, the perovskite film exhibits excellent stability in high pressure/salted/sulfur-rich environments. In addition, vitamins are introduced into the perovskite precursor, which promote the crystallization of the perovskite film, reducing the grain boundaries and adequately passivating the surface defects. The photoluminescence and radioluminescence intensity of the perovskite film are improved nearly 2-fold. By the in situ spraying growth method, the perovskite film is obtained over 100 cm2 with high uniformity (root-mean-square roughness of 1.06 nm). The perovskite scintillator film exhibits a light yield of 9001 photons per MeV and high spatial resolution of 9.0 lp mm−1. This work is expected to promote deep-sea mineral detection by X-rays.

X-ray photodetection are frequently used in medical diagnoses industrial inspection and environmental radiation detection. Currently, there is an ongoing effort to develop bendable or flexible x-ray photodetectors (PDs) to meet the demand on light weight and arbitrary shape detection system. Here, a highly bendable indirect x-ray PD is designed by coupling a P3HT:PC61BM organic photodetectors (OPDs) with a flexible perovskite quantum dots (QDs) embedded polymer scintillator. The flexible perovskite QDs scintillator exhibits high radioluminescence with emission peak centers at the 537 nm, which falls in maximum absorption range of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). The OPD, with 2\,\mu {\text{m }}active layer, exhibits low dark currents in the range of tens of nanoampere per square centimeter over a wide reversed biased range. The OPD demonstrates detectable light signal down to {\text{0}}{\text{.1}}\,\mu {\text{W}}\,{\text{cm}}{{\text{ }}^{ - 2}} and low dose detection capability. The coupling of perovskite QDs scintillator and OPD shows a sensitivity of 638 e nGy−1 mm−2 \left( {{\text{10}}{\text{.2 }}\mu {\text{C G}}{{\text{y}}^{ - {\text{1}}}}{\text{ c}}{{\text{m}}^{ - {\text{2}}}}} \right) at a dose rate of 1 mGy s−1, which brings the possibilities of realizing highly bendable x-ray PDs.

Graphical A novel hybrid bismuth bromide perovskite with centimeter size and high transparency was synthesized via antisolvent-assisted crystallization, exhibiting promising X-ray detection behavior. Hybrid bismuth halides perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for X-ray detection, due to the strong absorptivity of high-energy X-ray photons, high resistivity, large carrier diffusion length and low toxicity. However, the mostly investigated hybrid bismuth iodides single crystals are usually opaque and require a harsh synthesis process. Herein, novel one-dimensional (1D) pentamethylenediamine bismuth bromide (PDA)BiBr 5 single crystals were synthesized via an antisolvent-assisted crystallization method at room temperature. Bulk (PDA)BiBr 5 single crystals have sizes of 10×1.3×1.5 mm 3 and high transparency. They are shown to have low density of defects of 2.0×10 10 cm −3 and obvious photoconductivity. Moreover, they exhibit large bulk resistivity of 2.13×10 11 Ω cm and good X-ray attenuation coefficient. Consequently, the vertical structured (PDA)BiBr 5 single crystal X-ray photoconductor produces a sensitivity of 3.8 μC Gy air −1 cm −2 . This study provides a facile strategy for synthesizing bulk hybrid bismuth bromides single crystals with potential X-ray detection application.
