High-temperature oxidation behavior of slurry-derived YSZ coatings was clarified. • Oxidation kinetics slowed significantly during prolonged high-temperature exposure. • Particle sintering and pore-network evolution accompanied microstructural changes. • Particle sintering and interfacial stresses synergistically caused coating failure. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are important surface-engineered materials for protecting high-temperature components from thermal and chemical degradation. Slurry processing provides a flexible and cost-effective route for fabricating ceramic coatings. However, the oxidation-induced evolution of their particle-sintered microstructures and associated interfacial degradation mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. In this study, 8 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings were fabricated by the slurry method, and their oxidation behavior during isothermal exposure at 1100 °C was systematically investigated. The as-prepared coatings exhibited a porous particle-stacking structure with interconnected pores. During oxidation, the open pore structure initially facilitated oxygen access toward the coating/substrate interface and promoted the formation and growth of a thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer. With prolonged exposure, progressive particle sintering and microstructural densification reduced the overall pore connectivity, accompanied by a decrease in the oxidation rate. The evolution of the TGO and the redistribution of alloying elements near the interface occurred concurrently with changes in the ceramic-layer microstructure. Prolonged oxidation also reduced the strain tolerance of the ceramic layer and promoted the development of localized pores and horizontal cracks near the TC/TGO interface. After extended oxidation, the combined effects of TGO growth, thermal expansion mismatch, and oxidation-induced microstructural and phase evolution contributed to crack propagation and localized coating damage. These results clarify the coupled evolution of particle-sintered microstructures, interfacial oxidation, and damage development in slurry-derived YSZ coatings, providing insights into the microstructural design and durability optimization of slurry-derived ceramic thermal protective systems. The development of novel dense electrolyte membranes via three-dimensional printing (3DP) has garnered increasing attention for enabling high-performance solid oxide cells (SOCs). In this study, asymmetric yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte membranes featuring triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice structures were designed and fabricated using digital light processing (DLP) 3DP. To address cracking issues in the printed green bodies during drying and storage, a novel post-processing strategy involving a protective resin coating was introduced. By applying a thin layer of photocurable resin and curing it in situ, a robust protective barrier was formed, which enhanced structural integrity and significantly mitigated drying-induced defects. Owing to the asymmetric structure, the ionic conductance of the YSZ electrolyte membranes at 800 °C increased markedly from 0.13 S to over 5.38 S. This strategy demonstrates significant potential for the rapid and reliable fabrication of high-quality YSZ electrolytes via 3DP.

This study investigates the influence of Al 2 O 3 -20wt%TiO 2 (AT) modification on the hot corrosion resistance of YSZ coating. The YSZ coating, YSZ-AT composite coating, and YSZ/AT double layer coating were prepared using plasma spraying. An innovative dynamic corrosion method was conducted by plasma spraying NaCl under a heat flux density of 3350 kW/m 2 for 60 s, and the peak surface temperatures during corrosion exceeded 1500 °C during corrosion The results revealed that the YSZ coating suffered structural damage due to molten salt infiltration after corrosion, exhibiting a mass increase of 2.14 mg/cm 2 . In contrast, the composite coating exhibited the most severe damage due to the depletion and spalling of the AT phase, with a significant mass loss of 18.46 mg/cm 2 . However, the YSZ/AT double layer coating retained its structural integrity, experiencing only a moderate mass loss of 6.6 mg/cm 2 . The dense AT top layer (initial porosity about 0.378 %) effectively prevented molten salt penetration and acted as a sacrificial coating, reacting with the molten salt to consume corrosive media, thus demonstrating the best hot corrosion resistance.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is a promising candidate for abradable seal coatings (ASC) in aero-engines, yet its inherent high coefficient of friction (COF) limits further application. This study introduced dual solid lubricant phases consisting of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and silica-coated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN@SiO 2 ) with different mass fractions into YSZ, and their tribological performance was systematically evaluated from room temperature to 750 °C. The composite containing 15 wt% GNPs and 5 wt% h-BN@SiO 2 exhibited low and stable COF (below 0.3) and moderate wear rates. Notably, it achieved an ultra-low COF of 0.08 at 750 °C. This outstanding performance originates from the formation of a low-shear graphene/BN interlaced lamellar structure, while tribochemically formed silicate phases and molten boron oxide further enhance the overall tribological performance of the composite. This work proposes an effective design approach for the development of high-performance YSZ-based ASC materials across a broad temperature range.

A yttria-stabilized zirconia mixed silica nanofibrous membrane (YSZ/SiO 2 NFM) was fabricated by the electrospinning method. The well-aligned 3D membrane structure and the composite nanocrystalline-amorphous structure with fine zirconia grain and amorphous silica network, which greatly improved the mechanical properties of YSZ/SiO 2 NFMs. The strength of the ceramic fibrous membrane after heat treatment at 1300℃ was reported for the first time, the tensile strength can reach 4.0 ± 0.7 MPa and the strain can reach 5.3 ± 1.1 %. The use temperature of YSZ NFMs was increased by nearly 300℃. The maximum strength was up to 5.9 ± 0.8 MPa, which is currently reported that the highest strength of oxide ceramic nanofibers at the same temperature. The YSZ/SiO 2 NFMs after high temperature treatment not only had a good thermal insulation performance, but also had a hydrophobic performance. These attractive properties may provide new opportunities for flexible materials such as high-temperature insulation, fire insulation, and flexible electronics.

The mixed solution precursor was prepared by adding the yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nano-particles into the YSZ solution precursor to obtain the ceramic-based abradable sealing nanostructure coatings with the plasma spraying . The stability of the solution precursor must have the fluidity and take precautions to prevent the nano-particles sedimentation too quickly in the tube, resulting in clogging during the spraying process. The measurement of Zeta potential and rheology with varying dispersant were used to research the stabilization and the viscosity of the mixed solution precursor. The microstructure changed, and the phase composition of the mixed solution precursor coatings were evaluated via scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractograms (XRD). The result showed that the Zeta potential value and the liquidity of mixed solution precursor improved after using Poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) as a dispersant. The viscosity significant changed as the PAA content, the nano-particles, and the concentration of the precursor solution increased. The suspension plasma spraying (SPS) and solution precursor plasma spraying (SPPS) were combined to obtain a more complex structure in the coating microstructure of the mixed solution precursor with macropores and micropores. This contributed to further improve the structure diversity of coatings. More importantly, the mixed solution precursor coating has the lowest friction coefficient is 0.3 and exhibited the characteristic of excellent tribological performance .

The mixed conductor porous layer was prepared by introducing the electronic conductor NiO into the oxygen ion conductor YSZ for the impedimetric NO 2 sensor. By changing the ratio of YSZ/NiO in the porous layer , the morphology and electron-ion conduction properties of the mixed conductor porous layer were tuned to obtain the high-performance sensing electrode/electrolyte/gas three-phase boundary (TPB) and improve the response characteristics of the sensor. The results show that the number of pores in the porous layer decreases with increasing NiO doping, while the average pore size shows an opposite trend. The results of AC impedance and NO 2 -TPD measurement show that the introduction of NiO in the YSZ porous layer significantly improves the electrochemical activity of the sensor at TPB and the NO 2 adsorption capacity , which in turn improves the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor based on the YSZ:NiO= 1:0.5 (mass ratio) porous layer exhibits the highest Θ (Δ Θ = 19.13° for 300 ppm) and |Z| (S |Z| = 0.35 for 300 ppm) response value. The sensor also has good anti-interference ability. The changes of Δ Θ caused by CH 4 , CO 2 , H 2 , NO and NH 3 are 0.6%, 1.6%, − 2.6%, 3.3% and − 2.4%, and the Δ|Z| are 2.5%, 3.2%, − 2.7%, 5.6% and 1.2%. Meanwhile, the humidity has almost no effect on the |Z| and Θ response.

In order to improve the performance of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs), the effect of partial substitution of the transition metal M = Co, Cu, Fe and Mn for Ni in Nd 2 NiO 4+δ on the crystal chemistry, electrical conductivity , thermal stability, chemical reactivity with YSZ electrolyte and electrochemical performance has been systematically investigated. The electrochemical performances of the cathode materials are tested on planar NiO-YSZ anode-supported cells fabricated with YSZ as electrolyte in size of 50 mm × 50 mm. Compared to Nd 2 NiO 4+δ , each Nd 2 Ni 0.9 M 0.1 O 4+δ material shows a decrease in electrical conductivity and an increase in lattice volume, oxygen vacancy concentration and chemical reactivity with YSZ electrolyte. The cell with Nd 2 Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 O 4+δ cathode achieves the maximum power density of 530 mW cm −2 at 0.7 V at 800 °C. The cell with Nd 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4+δ cathode is the most stable in short-term test. A small amount of B-site doping in Nd 2 NiO 4+δ does not cause any change in the cathode microstructure. The study demonstrates that a tradeoff between oxygen transport properties and electrical conductivity can be accomplished by appropriate selection of transition metal and level of cation B-site doping in Nd2NiO4+δ. Nd2Ni0.9M0.1O4+δ (M = Co, Cu) can be considered to be potential cathode materials in IT-SOFCs.

To address the urgent need for integrated thermal-electromagnetic protection in hypersonic vehicle hot-end components, this study combines the wave-absorbing material La 0.5 Sr 0.5 FeO 3 (LSF) with the thermal insulation material Y 2 O 3 -stabilized ZrO 2 (YSZ) to prepare LSF-YSZ-based high-temperature functional coatings (referred to as LSFZ coatings) via atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). At 1000 °C, a 1.3 mm-thick coating achieved full X-band RL ≤ −4 dB, with thermal conductivity as low as 1.2 W/(m·K), and produced a temperature drop of 303 °C. Further analysis reveals the formation of a multiphase composite porous nanostructure in the coating. The electromagnetic loss mechanism gradually shifted from polarization loss to conductivity loss dominance as temperature increased. This study provides new insights for the design of thermal/electromagnetic synergistic protective coating under extreme environments.

Improving the fracture toughness of agricultural soil-engaging components can mitigate the detrimental effects of hard particles in the soil while maintaining the wear resistance of the components, thereby improving the service performance. The wear resistance of the parts can be improved by surface treatment, but the surface toughness after treatment still needs to be further improved. In this study, WC10Co4Cr@YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) core-shell structured composite powder was synthesized by modifying commercial WC10Co4Cr powder using the sol-gel method, and WC10Co4Cr coatings were prepared using the powders before and after modification. The microstructure of the powder and coatings were characterized. The mechanical properties and wear resistance of the coatings were evaluated through microhardness , nanoindentation , and friction testing. The hardness of the YSZ-modified composite coating was comparable to that of the unmodified coating, yet it exhibited lower porosity and twice the fracture toughness. Wear test results indicated that the coating's wear loss was greatly reduced compared with the substrate. In addition, the wear rate of the YSZ-modified coating was 71.11 % lower than the unmodified coating, demonstrating its exceptional wear resistance. The findings show that incorporation of YSZ into the coating system further enhanced wear resistance. The strengthening mechanisms resulting from the YSZ inclusion include the pinning effect, which controls the size and distribution of the WC grains, the shell structure that prevents overheating, and the improved fracture toughness of the coating. This work provides a new way to extend the service time of agricultural soil-engaging components.

A UV-curing-assisted dip-coating strategy enables controllable fabrication of ultrathin YSZ membranes on porous anodes. • The membrane-forming mechanism of photocurable resin slurries is systematically elucidated. • The thickness of electrolyte membranes is precisely regulated, with the minimum down to 2 μm. • NiO-YSZ/YSZ/LSM cells with ultrathin electrolytes achieve 750 mW cm −2 at 800 °C with good stability. Ultrathin yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes can reduce ohmic losses and improve solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) efficiency, yet fabricating dense, gas-tight micrometer-scale membranes on porous supports remains challenging. Herein, a UV-curing-assisted dip-coating strategy is developed for the controllable fabrication of ultrathin YSZ membranes. Rational regulation of slurry wettability and rheology mitigates capillary-driven infiltration into the porous support, whereas UV-triggered cross-linking offers transient structural stabilization to preserve membrane integrity throughout the drying process. Based on thermal decomposition analysis, a stress-managed sintering process is established to obtain dense and defect-free YSZ electrolyte membranes with a thickness of ∼2 μm. The optimized single cell delivers a peak power density of 750 mW cm −2 at 800 °C and over 140 mW cm −2 at 650 °C, respectively, together with excellent operational and thermal cycling stability. These results demonstrate great potential of UV-curing-assisted dip coating strategy for fabricating ultrathin electrolyte membranes for high-efficiency SOFCs. High-entropy oxides are promising thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials owing to their low thermal conductivity. However, they have poor fracture toughness. To overcome this limitation, this study designed a core–shell structural composite oxide. By combining low-toughness La 2 (Zr 0.2 Y 0.2 Yb 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ti 0.2 ) 2 O 7 (L(ZYYNT)O) high-entropy oxide and high-toughness yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), a new La 2 (Zr 0.2 Y 0.2 Yb 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ti 0.2 ) 2 O 7 @YSZ composite was designed and chemically synthesized. Subsequently, the properties of the composite oxide were evaluated. Results show that the thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion of the L(ZYYNT)O@YSZ composite-structure ceramic are approximately 1.103 W·m − 1 ·K − 1 at room temperature, after correcting for porosity, and approximately 9.5356 × 10 − 6 K − 1 at 1000 °C, respectively. Moreover, its fracture toughness is approximately 3.45 MPa·m 1/2 , which is 43% higher than that of the L(ZYYNT)O high-entropy oxide. However, the interface formed between L(ZYYNT)O and YSZ was incoherent. The interfacial binding energy between the L(ZYYNT)O high-entropy oxide and the YSZ was determined using a Materials Studio simulation and is approximately 3.315 J/m 2 . Thus, the study demonstrates that the L(ZYYNT)O@YSZ composite-structure oxide exhibits potential as a TBC material.
