Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) bearing rich accessible Lewis acidic/basic active sites and hierarchical pores are favorable to catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides with high yields of the target product under mild conditions. In this context, a facile etching and regrowth method is developed here to convert unstable leaf-like zinc-based ZIF-L to one kind of bimetallic ZIF (namely, ZnFe-ZIF) with a rough surface, a porous and accessible three-dimensional structure, and abundant Lewis acidic sites. Owing to the high Fe-doping content functioning as rich Lewis acidic sites and the high CO2 adsorbing capability together with the structural advantages to favor the mass diffusion, the yield of target cyclic carbonate can be up to >99% for the cycloaddition of CO2 and epichlorohydrin by ZnFe-ZIF at 6 h under mild conditions (0.1 MPa and 80 °C) with the selectivity of 100%. More importantly, unlike ZIF-L, which is unstable in the reaction system, the synthesized ZnFe-ZIF displays a satisfactory chemical stability without a loss in catalytic activities after five recycling runs as well as good substrate tolerance, making ZnFe-ZIF a potential high-performance catalyst for CO2 conversion.

In recent years, transition metal-based catalytic materials have garnered considerable attention, particularly those exhibiting high catalytic efficiency toward both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, a self-supporting ternary transition metal phosphide (CoFeNi0.2P) with a hierarchical structure was synthesized using the Prussian blue analogue (PBA)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L) template. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure of the PBA/ZIF-L precursor and the electronic structure modulation induced by Ni doping, the resulting CoFeNi0.2P demonstrates impressive bifunctional electrocatalytic activity. Specifically, in 1 M KOH electrolyte, the CoFeNi0.2P catalyst requires an overpotential of only 88 mV to deliver 10 mA cm−2for the HER and 248 mV to achieve 50 mA cm−2for the OER. Moreover, it demonstrates satisfactory stability toward both the HER and OER. When integrated into a two-electrode electrolyzer, CoFeNi0.2P enables a current density of 10 mA cm−2at a cell voltage of 1.59 V, maintaining robust performance for over 25 h. This study provides a feasible strategy for the rational design of hierarchical electrocatalysts for efficient overall water splitting.

Membrane fouling remains a critical obstacle for the application of polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration in industrial wastewater treatment. In this work, a novel multifunctional composite membrane was developed by co-embedding carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and ZIF-L-derived carbon-doped ZnO (C-ZnO) nanoparticles into a PES matrix via the reverse thermally induced phase separation (RTIPS) method. The optimized membrane M3 contains 0.05 wt% CQDs and 0.02 wt% C-ZnO. It exhibited a remarkably hydrophilic surface with a water contact angle of 51.8°. Compared to membranes fabricated by conventional non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS), the RTIPS method produced a structure with a highly porous surface and an interconnected sponge-like support, effectively breaking the permeability-selectivity trade-off. The optimized composite membrane exhibited a superior pure water permeability of 1555 L m −2 h −1 while maintaining a high humic acid rejection of 91.9%. This membrane also demonstrated robust long-term antifouling stability and a photocatalytic flux recovery rate of 65.8% under visible light. Furthermore, it achieved nearly 100% antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus , attributed to a dual-defense mechanism combining a physical hydration layer with the chemical action of photocatalysis and Zn 2+ release. These findings highlight the significant potential of this RTIPS-fabricated CQDs/C-ZnO/PES membrane as a robust solution for high-performance wastewater treatment.

The ideas of high effective specific surface area, multi-component and multi-phase synergistic are introduced to construct high-performance and high-stability electrodes. After etching and exchanging with Lewis acid (nickel ion) and annealing selenization, the hierarchical multi-phase Ni x Co 1-x Se 2 /carbon–nitrogen frameworks (CNFs, Zeolitic-Imidazolate-Framework-L derivatives) on CoO is synthesized. After systematic research, it is found that the concentration and reaction time of the Lewis acid and selenization conditions can directly affect the structure and composition (bimetal) of the electrode. In the optimal electrode, CNFs with the larger effective specific surface area can fully expose the active material to the electrolyte, the bimetal synergy (Ni-Co), and the multiphase synergy ((Ni, Co)Se 2 and CoSe 2 ) can effectively enhance the performance. The anode demonstrates a high mass-specific capacity of 207.8 mAh g −1 . A hybrid supercapacitor (Ni x Co 1-x Se 2 /CNFs/CoO@CC//activated carbon) is fabricated and displayed superior performance and stability: high energy density (45.0 Wh kg −1 , 800.0 W kg −1 ), and a cycle retention rate of 98.0% (12,000 cycles). LEDs in parallel were lit up by the devices, showing their practical value and potential.

Layered assembled membranes of 2D leaf-like zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-L) nanosheets have received great attention in the field of water treatment due to the porous structure and excellent antibacterial ability, but the dense accumulation on the membrane surface and the low permeate flux greatly hinder their application. Herein, we synthesized mHNTs (modified halloysite nanotubes)/ZIF-L nanocomposites on modified mHNTs by in situ growth method. Interestingly, due to the different size of mHNTs and ZIF-L, mHNTs were packed in ZIF-L nanosheets. The hollow mHNTs provided additional transport channels for water molecules, and the accumulation of the ZIF-L nanosheets was decreased after assembling mHNTs/ZIF-L nanocomposites into membrane by filtration. The prepared mHNTs/ZIF-L membrane presented high permeate flux (59.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), which is 2–4 times of the ZIF-L membranes (14.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). Moreover, mHNTs/ZIF-L membranes are intrinsically antimicrobial, which exhibit extremely high bacterial resistance. We provide a controllable strategy to improve 2D ZIF-L assembles, and develops novel membranes using 2D package structure as building units.

The development of effective and accurate catechol (CC) electrochemical sensors is critical for environment and life health perspectives. A facile pyrolysis of 2D bimetallic (Zn/Co) zeolitic imidazolate framework (Zn/Co-ZIF-L) was employed to prepare Zn and Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped porous carbon (Zn/Co@NPC). Prussian blue (PB) was synthesized in situ via the co-precipitation of ferricyanide ([Fe(CN)6]3−) and iron (II) ion originated from the reduction of Fe3+ by Zn/Co@NPC and then served as the main active substance of CC detection. The morphology and composition of the final composite Zn/Co@NPC-PB were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The Zn/Co@NPC-PB modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits two concentration linear ranges of 4.13 μM − 1.08 mM (R2 = 0.999) and 1.08 mM−11.82 mM (R2 = 0.999) for CC electrochemical detection with a limit of detection 1.05 μM (S/N = 3). At the same time, the Zn/Co@NPC-PB/GCE shows great selectivity to electrochemical oxidation behavior of CC in presence of 20 folds dihydroxybenzene interferents such as hydroquinone and resorcinol. Furthermore, it showed a long-term stability and near 100% recovery for the detection of a real sample in Yellow River water.

A novel fluorescent composite (CDs@ZIF-L) was synthesized for the selective detection of Fe 3+ based on the encapsulation of Carbon dots (CDs) into Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) with a two-dimensional leaf-like structure. The physicochemical structure, surface morphology, and composition of the adsorbent were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that unlike the conventional three-dimensional rhombic structure (ZIF-8), the synthesized two-dimensional leaf-like nanosheets (ZIF-L) not only maintained the structural integrity but also had a permeable pore structure. Importantly, at an excitation wavelength of 350 nm, the composite's had significant fluorescence emission at 445 nm and was effectively quenched in the presence of Fe 3+ , which can be used as an effective fluorescent scaling probe. Under the optimal conditions, CDs@ZIF-L was used as a fluorescent probe to detect Fe 3+ with good linearity in the range of 0.02–2 mM (R 2 = 0.9948) and a low detection limit of 0.891 μM. The fluorescent probe can also be used for the determination of Fe 3+ in fruit samples with good recovery and accuracy, showing great potential for applications in environmental monitoring and agricultural pollutant control. It has good recovery and accuracy and shows great potential for environmental monitoring and agricultural pollutant control.

Membrane separation has emerged as a competitive energy-efficient approach for carbon capture and flue gas treatment. Membrane materials and structures are the core of gas separation membranes, which collectively govern gas molecular mass transfer and separation behaviors. Two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) porous nanosheets hold great promise for gas separation due to their nanoscale thickness and structural tunability, but they are often limited by low permeability. Herein, we propose a supramolecular strategy to fabricate ZIF-L/GO/Pebax mixed matrix membranes with intercalated network architectures for efficient CO 2 /N 2 separation. Leaf-like ZIF-L expands the interlayer spacing of GO nanosheets and constructs high-speed continuous gas transport pathways within the membrane. This unique intercalated structure provides abundant CO 2 -philic sites, significantly enhancing CO 2 solubility and enabling highly selective gas molecular sieving. Moreover, hydrogen bonds and chelation coordination interactions between ZIF-L/GO and polymer matrix ensure excellent interfacial compatibility while reinforcing structural stability. This supramolecular structural engineering approach effectively mitigates the limitations of traditional membranes, achieving CO 2 permeability of 1000.8 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 45, exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bound and approaching the 2019 limit. Additionally, the membrane displays superior mechanical properties and long-term operational stability, providing a promising avenue toward high-performance materials for efficient CO 2 capture.

Defect-engineered Cu–TCPP/ZIF-L nanosheet membrane: tannic acid coordinates with Cu 2+ to create defect sites, while ZIF-L serves as an interlayer spacer to suppress π–π stacking and restore transport. • The optimized membrane achieves 691.20 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 , a 75.5× increase over pristine Cu–TCPP. • Efficient dye removal under static conditions: 97.77% (CV) and 97.87% (MG), suitable for agricultural water purification. • Adsorption–degradation self-cleaning via single-layer chemisorption/ion exchange and catalytic oxidation by O₂· - / 1 O₂; cucumber seedling tests confirm irrigation safety. Dye-laden wastewater from aquaculture and agricultural runoff poses serious environmental challenges, calling for membranes that can deliver both high water flux and efficient dye removal. However, MOF-based composite membranes often still face trade-offs between permeance and separation efficiency, and their practical performance is limited by fouling and insufficient self-regeneration. We hypothesize that defect engineering of Cu–TCPP via tannic-acid-mediated metal–phenolic network (MPN) disruption, together with ZIF-L nanosheet interlayer modulation, can create favorable transport pathways and strengthen adsorption/ion-exchange interactions while enabling ROS-driven self-cleaning. A defect-engineered Cu–TCPP/ZIF-L nanosheet-modified PVDF membrane was prepared using an MPN strategy with tannic acid, and its dye removal performance toward malachite green and crystal violet, together with the underlying mechanisms, was systematically investigated. The optimized membrane achieves a 75.5-fold increase in water permeance to 691.20 L/(m 2 ·h·bar) while maintaining high removal efficiencies of 97.87% for malachite green and 97.77% for crystal violet, and it exhibits self-cleaning behavior enabled by superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen. This work demonstrates an integrated Cu-TCPP–TA/ZIF-L/PVDF membrane design that combines MPN-mediated defect regulation with ZIF-L-assisted lamellar structure modulation for adsorption–degradation-based dye removal in agricultural water-related scenarios. Bacterial susceptibility testing and real-time inactivation are critical for safeguarding public health with broad applications in food safety monitoring and clinical diagnostics. For pH-dependent bacterial determination and hyperthermal inactivation applications, we developed needle-shaped ZnO/ZIF-L systems through a zeolitic imidazolate framework coating of zinc oxide by a self-template strategy. The pH-dependent ZnO/ZIF-L-embedded hydrogels were prepared by UV light-mediated olefin photopolymerization using acrylamide, N,N’-methylenebis(acrylamide), hydroxyethyl methacrylate, bromothymol blue (BTB), and ZnO/ZIF-L. The hydrogel achieves rapid visual detection of bacterial infections through a pH-responsive colorimetric transition, leveraging BTB to signal acidic microenvironmental shifts characteristic of bacterial proliferation. The ZnO/ZIF-L photosensitizers can enhance charge separation and transfer and generate highly reactive oxygen species. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus can be effectively inactivated for ZnO/ZIF-L hydrogels by a physical disruption/photodynamic synergistic antibacterial mechanism. The antibacterial efficiency can reach as high as 99%. The proposed strategy not only provides a sensitive strategy for bacterial determination but also implements efficient inactivation of bacteria simultaneously. This strategy combines real-time bacterial biosensing with on-demand antimicrobial action in a single platform, overcoming the limitations of conventional sequential detection-treatment approaches.

3D metal N-doped carbon frameworks (M-NCFs) are produced from the direct pyrolysis of 2D zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-L Zn and Co) in a reducing atmosphere. The effects of the thermal treatment were studied in order to achieve the desired catalyst. The results show that metal nanoparticles and N-doping species present in the carbon matrix have a direct influence on the catalytic performance. Zn/NCF-1000 displayed quantitative conversion and selectivity towards the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide through the cycloaddition with epoxides. Furthermore, the magnetic property of the newly synthesized Co/NCF-600 was used to demonstrate its superior stability and recyclability, retaining the same catalytic activity for more than 10 cycles.

CoS 2 /Co-Ni layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with a rational tailored pore structure are developed by partial sulfurization of Co-ZIF-L and subsequent Ni 2+ etching for the transformation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to layered double hydroxides . The as-synthesized CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs maintain the leaf-like structure and have rich hierarchical pores. More importantly, CoS 2 nanoparticles are uniformly embedded among Co-Ni LDH layers, facilitating mass diffusion and favorably exposing more active sites. Benefiting from these desirable compositional and structural features, a remarkable specific capacitance (capacity) of 1784 F/g (223 mAh/g) at 1 A/g is delivered by CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs. Furthermore, the as-assembled CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDH//activated carbon as the asymmetric supercapacitor device also exhibits a high energy density of 125 Wh/kg at a power density of 800 W/kg and a superb capacitance retention of 98 % after 5000 cycles, outperforming many Co-Ni LDH based electrode materials reported in the literature.
