In-situ construction of zinc-gel-ZIFs MMMs within metal gel towards enhanced gas separation

Shuai-ying Ding,Huang Du,Zhen-liang Tan,Ke-hui Gou,Yi-dan Hou,Ji-kun Yin,Xiu-xiu Guo,Bo Wang

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with the characteristics of intrinsic pore channels and adjustable pore structure, are deemed as potential membrane materials. Most researches aimed at constructing MOFs-based mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) within polymer as the matrix. Herein, we proposed the in-situ construction of a zinc-gel-ZIFs MMMs within a zinc-gel matrix, which shows the following features. First, the metal gel, with a high-density metal source, participates the coordination reactions, which induces the oriented growth of MOFs as independent gas transport channels; Second, the gel network, similar to polymers, not only maintain the structural densification but also enhance the interfacial compatibility during in-situ growth process. A 3-fold increase in the Young's modulus compared with polymer matrix counterparts explains the excellent bending resistance and high-pressure separation ability; Third, the stable solvent and residual metal gels in the gel network can further facilitate the gas adsorption, and the optimal zinc-gel-ZIFs MMMs shows competitive CO 2 /N 2 and CH 4 /N 2 separation performance compared with state-of-the-art membranes.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs)-derived NixCo3−xO4/CNTs nanocomposites with enhanced electrochemical performance for supercapacitor

Bei Xue,Kezhi Li,Shengyue Gu,Jinhua Lu

Coupling Co-Ni bimetallic oxides with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is recognized an effective strategy to enhance the performance of supercapacitors. In this work, porous Ni x Co 3−x O 4 /CNTs nanocomposites are prepared through in situ growth of ZIF-67 precursor onto CNTs followed by subsequent annealing. The obtained Ni x Co 3−x O 4 /CNTs combine the promising high storage performance of porous Ni x Co 3−x O 4 with the excellent conductivity of CNTs. When test in three-electrode system, the electrode materials exhibit a high specific capacitance of 668 F/g at 1 A g −1 , a good rate capability of 91.60% retention from 1 to 10 A g −1 and good cycling stability of 91.20% retention after 3500 cycles in 2.0 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the Ni x Co 3−x O 4 /CNTs are tested in two-electrode configuration, showing a high energy density of 23.56 Wh kg −1 at power density of 800.15 W kg −1 and outstanding cycling stability of 93.75% retention after 3000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of the designed nanomaterials can be ascribed to the synergy between the CNTs and Ni x Co 3−x O 4 .

Flower-Like ZnO-Assisted One-Pot Encapsulation of Noble Metal Nanoparticles Supported Catalysts with ZIFs

Lu Lin,Haiou Liu,Xiongfu Zhang

Rational design of efficient approaches to fabricate MOFs-coated core-shell composites is promising but challenging. We report here the encapsulation of Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) supported flower-like ZnO (F-ZnO) microspheres with ZIF-8 shell through a facile strategy, in which the formation and immobilization of Pd NPs on F-ZnO supports and the subsequent growth of ZIF-8 shells over them are effectively integrated into one-pot synthetic route. Importantly, the utilization of ZnO both as support of Pd NPs and Zn 2+ source of ZIF-8 is favorable for the implement of one-pot synthesis, due to its functions in anchoring Pd NPs and inducing ZIF-8 formation. Further insights into the morphological influence of zinc oxide particles on the resulting materials indicate that the flower-like microspheres with 2D nanosheets as subunits also benefit the coating of Pd NPs supported cores with ZIF-8, resulting in a well-defined core-shell catalyst. The achieved catalyst deliveries remarkable performance in terms of selectivity, anti-poisoning and recyclability in the liquid hydrogenations of alkenes.

Solid-phase hot-pressing of POMs-ZIFs precursor and derived phosphide for overall water splitting

Yu-Jia Tang,Hong-Jing Zhu,Long-Zhang Dong,A-Man Zhang,Shun-Li Li,Jiang Liu,Ya-Qian Lan

Rational design of electrocatalyst with high performance for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction is attracting considerable attention in recent years. However, most electrocatalysts are powders and require to deposit on conductive substrates with binders, leading to complicated steps and hindering the improvement of long-term stability. This work exhibits a solid-phase hot-pressing method to prepare polyoxometalates based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (POMs-ZIFs) precursor on carbon cloth (CC) rapidly and mildly. After phosphidation treatment, nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon layers coated phosphide on CC (CoP/MoP@NC/CC) is synthesized. CoP/MoP@NC/CC has excellent electrocatalytic performance for water splitting due to the synergistic effect of CoP, MoP and as-formed oxide/hydroxide layers. It shows the low overpotentials of 94 mV for HER and 270 mV for OER at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline medium, which is superior to most of the reported phosphide-based electrocatalysts. Notably, the ultra-high current density of 1000 mA cm −2 can be reached at the overpotentials of only 475 mV for HER and 657 mV for OER. As both cathode and anode for overall water splitting, CoP/MoP@NC can achieve the current density of 50 mA cm −2 at the cell voltage of 1.71 V. The solid-phase hot-pressing method ensures the tight and uniform growth of the fast nucleating and stable materials on substrate and applies for more electrochemical reactions.

Preparation of Co/C Composites Derived from Zn/Co-ZIFs and Their Microwave Absorption Properties

Shi Chonghua,Fu Hang,Nie Jiajin,Yao Shaowei

A composite material of Co/N-doped porous carbon was derived from a zeolite imidazolate framework (Zn/Co-ZIF) precursor, which exhibited a controllable microstructure and high specific surface area. In order to study the microwave absorption properties of the composites, the Zn/Co-ZIFs were heat-treated at 930°C in a N 2 atmosphere to obtain the composites, in which Co nanoparticles were distributed uniformly in N-doped porous carbon (Co/C composites). Through N 2 adsorption and desorption testing, the specific surface area of the Co/C composites was about 333.5 m 2  g −1 , and the Barrett−Joyner−Halenda (BJH) pore size distribution was 5.7131 nm, with the majority of pores at mesoporous scale. The microwave absorption properties of Co/C composites with different content were then analyzed, revealing that the Co/C composite with absorbent content of 15 wt.% had the smallest reflection loss (−46.36 dB) at a thickness of 3.1 mm. Based on these results, the Co/C composites not only have the advantages of high specific surface area and special porous structure, but with the appropriate absorbent content, the Co/C composites show excellent microwave absorption performance.

Construction of 3D star-shaped Co–NCs for high-performance supercapacitors

Qi Lun,Tu Dan,Shi Yu,Liu Jingjing,Zhao Xinyuan,Xu Jianhua,Yang Yajie,Yang Wenyao

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have greatly attracted attention in supercapacitors research due to their porosity and structural controllability. In this paper, a series of Co–nitrogen carbon (Co–NCs) were obtained via a facile one-step calcination process using 3D star-shaped Co–ZIF as a precursor. The energy storage mechanism is analyzed and it is concluded that Co–NCs show excellent capacitance and cycling stability, attributed to its star-shaped porous morphology and high pseudocapacitance contribution. The optimized Co–NCs/550 exhibits a specific capacity of 825 F g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 , and a highly stable cycling performance over 5000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g −1 . This work provides a practical strategy for designing stable electrode for high-performance supercapacitors.

Self-cleaning of metal-organic framework membranes achieved by photocatalytic ZIFs for dye and antibiotic separation

Jie He,Rui Zhang,Dong Chen,Ziyin Chen,Jiacheng Jiang,Maoqing Xu,Yujie Liu,Zixi Li,Lin Peng,Yong Shu,Luming Jiang,Guixiang Zhao

The progress of membrane-based applications is hindered by widespread membrane fouling , which leads to a significant decrease in separation effectiveness and lifespan, even though membrane separations have shown great potential in the treatment of dye wastewater. The metal-organic framework MOFs (ZIF-8) display strong thermal and chemical stability and an exceptional capacity to degrade organic molecules under visible light, making them extremely promising for the development of self-cleaning membranes. In this investigation, a ZIF-8/L-DOPA/PVDF mixed matrix membrane with excellent self-cleaning properties was constructed using the in-situ growth technique. The characterization results confirmed the formation of a continuous ZIF-8 coating layer , considerably increasing the surface roughness of the composite membrane from 22.9 nm to 76.3 nm compared to L-DOPA/PVDF substrates. The ZIF-8 layer deposited on the L-DOPA/PVDF membrane surface reduced the contact angle from 75.71° to 40.94°. The highest-performing ZIF-8/L-DOPA/PVDF membranes show a higher water permeability of 159.63 (L·m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and superior dye rejection rates (Congo red: 97.3 %, Methylene Blue: 98.32 %, Methyl Blue: 98.62 %), along with enhanced removal of antibiotics (e.g., Tetracycline: 95.3 % and Ciprofloxacin: 93.34 %), and long-term nanofiltration stability. Furthermore, the treated membrane recovers almost all of its initial separation efficacy after exposure to visible light due to the successful removal of attached dyes from the membrane surface through photocatalysis . This work presents the potential to fabricate membranes with advantageous photocatalytic properties and effectively treat dye wastewater using self-cleaning membranes.

In-situ growth of ZIFs on cotton fabrics for enhanced gas absorption by hierarchical porous structures

Nuo Xu,Shuai-Xia Yuan,Yixin Liu,Zong-Yu Guo,Minghua Li,Duan-Chao Wang

Odors from sweat and skin secretions not only cause discomfort but may also signal microbial contamination in textiles, posing health risks. To address this, we report a multifunctional composite textile prepared via in-situ growth of two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67 and ZIF-8) on cotton fabrics. Cotton was chosen for its comfort, hydrophilicity, and modifiable cellulose structure, with woven and knitted variants offering complementary mechanical and elastic properties. The integration of ZIFs imparts high surface area, tunable microporosity, and intrinsic antibacterial performance. Structural characterization confirms uniform deposition of ZIFs forming a functional shell on the cotton fibers. Notably, X-ray micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) and BET analysis jointly reveal a hierarchical porous architecture from the textile macrostructure to ZIF microdomains, enabling efficient adsorption of both alkaline (NH 3 ) and acidic (CH 3 COOH) odor molecules. The ZIFs exhibit a surface area of 1451.0 m 2 /g, retaining 89.2 m 2 /g post-integration. The resulting fabrics demonstrate >90 % odor removal, excellent water absorbency and breathability, and 99.9 % antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. This study offers a promising strategy for designing next-generation functional deodorizing textiles for daily hygiene applications.

In situ synthesis of polymer grafted ZIFs and application in mixed matrix membrane for CO2 separation

Yongqiang Gao,Zhihua Qiao,Song Zhao,Zhi Wang,Jixiao Wang

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) provide an efficient implementation that overcomes the bottleneck of individual inorganic or polymeric membranes for gas separation, but still face challenges. Here, we put forward a strategy of using in situ synthesized polymer grafted metal organic frameworks (MOFs) to eliminate both interfacial and carrier problems existing in the MMMs. Specifically, polyethyleneimine (PEI) grafted ZIF-8 (PEI-g-ZIF-8) was synthesized in situ by using Zn2+, 2-methylimidazole, and hyperbranched PEI through a rapid method at room-temperature. The chemical composition and porous structure of PEI-g-ZIF-8 were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption measurement, etc. The results indicated that the synthesized PEI-g-ZIF-8 achieves an enlarged pore volume and aminated surface. The improved interfacial compatibility between PEI-g-ZIF-8 nanoparticles and poly(vinylamine) (PVAm) was confirmed through high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry and zeta potential measurements. According to the CO2/gas separation tests, the MMMs incorporating with PEI-g-ZIF-8 achieved 1990 GPU of CO2 permeance and 79.9 of selectivity for CO2/N2 (15/85 vol%) separation, and 1790 GPU of CO2 permeance and 40.7 of selectivity for CO2/CH4 (10/90 vol%) separation, under 0.30 MPa gas pressure.

ZIFs-modified GO plates for enhanced CO2 separation performance of ethyl cellulose based mixed matrix membranesf

Kai Yang,Yan Dai,Wenji Zheng,Xuehua Ruan,Hao Li,Gaohong He

Graphene oxide (GO) has been employed as filler in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to enhance gas selectivity as its high-aspect ratio structure makes the path of gas diffusion longer and tortuous, improving diffusivity selectivity of gases with different molecular sizes. However, the stacking and folding structure of GO nano-sheets leads to gas barrier effects which reduce gas permeability. In this paper, a strategy of modifying continuous ZIF-8 layer with ultra-microporosity and high gas permeability on the surface of GO nano-sheets was proposed to increase the size and connectivity of gas transfer passage. ZIF-8@GO nano-sheets were successfully prepared by two-step ultrasonic synthesis method of growing ZIF-8 on GO surface at room temperature and the flexibility of nano-sheets could be easily tuned by different reaction times. CO 2 permeability of ethyl cellulose (EC)/ZIF-8@GO MMMs achieves continuous enhancement with the increased loading of ZIF-8@GO compared with pure GO based MMMs which shows rare effective improvement in CO 2 permeability. EC/ZIF-8@GO membrane containing 20 wt% fillers exhibits CO 2 permeability of 203.3 Barrer together with CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 33.4, increased by 139% and 65% from that of pristine EC membrane respectively, and this performance is also higher than that of MMMs containing independent GO or ZIF-8. Having distinct improvement of CO 2 separation performance, the modification strategy using ultra-porosity MOFs to enhance gas transfer of 2D nano-sheets is promising for fabrication of high performance CO 2 separation membranes.

Rational design of hollow N/Co-doped carbon spheres from bimetal-ZIFs for high-efficiency electrocatalysis

Xiaodong Chen,Kui Shen,Junying Chen,Binbin Huang,Danni Ding,Lei Zhang,Yingwei Li

To explore efficient non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), herein we developed a facile bottom-up approach for the fabrication of a hollow porous carbon sphere codoped with ultra-small Co nanoparticles and uniform nitrogen distribution (Co-HNCS) via one-step pyrolysis of a core-shell type precursor composing of polystyrene (PS) core and bimetallic ZIF (zeolite imidazolate framework) shell. The bimetallic Co-Zn-ZIFs (BMZIFs) was selected as the sacrifice template due to not only its high nitrogen content and regular porosity but also the superiority that Zn species in BMZIFs can both spatially separate Co species to suppress the aggregation of ultra-small Co NPs and be evaporated to afford extra pores during high-temperature pyrolysis. As expected, by adjusting the starting molar ratio of Zn to Co, we were able to prepare Co-HNCS- x ( x represent the molar ratio of Co to total starting metal feeding) that exhibited unique hollow structure with large surface areas, enhanced mass transport, high porosities, tunable particle sizes and graphitization degrees, abundant highly active CoN x sites, and thus significantly improved ORR performance. Particularly, the optimal Co-HNCS-0.2 exhibited the remarkable ORR activity (the onset and half-wave potentials were 0.94 and 0.82   V   vs. RHE, respectively) via an efficient four-electron-dominant ORR process in alkaline medium, which outperformed that of commercial Pt/C (20   wt%, the onset and half-wave potentials were 0.93 and 0.80   V   vs. RHE, respectively) and most of previously reported Co-based catalysts. Moreover, it also displayed much superior stability and tolerance to methanol as compared to Pt/C, further highlighting the merit of this facile synthesis approach. Our findings might inspire new thoughts on the development of precious-metal-free, highly-efficient and cost-effective ORR electrocatalysts derived from MOF.

Encapsulation of metal precursor within ZIFs for bimetallic N-doped carbon electrocatalyst with enhanced oxygen reduction

Mengchen Wu,Xianxiang Hu,Congling Li,Jian Li,Haijun Zhou,Xia Zhang,Rui Liu

High-performance non-precious metal-doped carbon catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) are viable candidates in lieu of platinum-based catalysts. It has been universally reported that active Co–N sites combined with Fe–N sites embedded in carbon matrix represent the most promising active sites for ORR process. Benefiting from the cage-encapsulated-precursor pyrolysis strategy, herein, we fabricated a Fe–N and Co–N homogeneously doped carbon framework by one step. TEM demonstrated the ultimate product had well-defined morphology with Fe (0.54 at%), Co (0.31 at%) and N (2.94 at%) uniformly distributed into the carbon skeleton. The N 2 absorption-desorption isotherms indicated the MOF-derived catalyst had a high specific surface area of 647.6 m 2  g −1 and inherit hierarchical porosity . Significantly, such FeCo–NC catalyst outperformed a current density (5.6 mA cm −2 ) at 0.70 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) 1.18 times higher than that of a commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (5 mA cm −2 ) catalyst in alkaline medium , and more positive peak potential of 0.63 V than its counterparts. Its high cycling stability and immunity towards methanol crossover in a wide range pH value showed good potential to be used as cathodes in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for long term operation. This simple synthesis strategy would to some degree leverage a cage-encapsulated-precursor for tailored utility of active sites for ORR in a porous carbon framework.
