DBD enables simultaneous removal of SMX and BPA in water-sediment systems. • ·OH, 1 O 2 and ·O 2 − dominate plasma oxidation. • Phase distribution controls degradation efficiency. • Plasma transforms sediment structure and enhances pollutant desorption. • LCA/TEA show electricity use and cost limit scale-up feasibility. Emerging contaminants are frequently detected in environmental waters and sediments. However, limited attention has been given to their removal in coupled water-sediment systems. In this study, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was employed as a chemical-free advanced oxidation technology to achieve in-situ generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for simultaneous remediation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (water phase dominant) and bisphenol A (BPA) (sediment-associated) in a water-sediment system. The results show that degradation efficiency is strongly dependent on applied voltage, O 2 flow rate, and sediment-to-water ratio, while initial pollutant concentration is a limiting factor due to ROS availability. ESR and quenching experiments confirmed that ·OH, 1 O 2 , and ·O 2 − are the dominant reactive species, with 1 O 2 and ·OH playing primary roles. LC-MS and DFT analyses revealed multiple oxidative pathways involving hydroxylation, bond cleavage, and ring-opening reactions. Predictive ECOSAR and T.E.S.T. analyses suggested lower toxicity for most identified transformation products, and selected algal and seed-germination bioassays showed reduced toxicity-related effects after treatment. Plasma treatment also altered sediment structure and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which may facilitate pollutant desorption and interfacial mass transfer. Gate-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) identified electricity consumption and capital cost as the main burdens within the assessed boundary. This work demonstrates that DBD plasma enables simultaneous degradation of water- and sediment-associated contaminants through coupled ROS-driven oxidation and sediment matrix restructuring, providing a sustainable strategy for complex environmental remediation. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a pervasive and significant mycotoxin that poses serious health risks to humans and animals. The development of efficient biocatalysts for the enzymatic detoxification of OTA is of great importance. In this study, we enhanced the OTA-degrading activity of three amidohydrolases (ADHs) by up to ninefold. This improvement was achieved by reducing steric hindrance in the binding pocket and fine-tuning the hydrophilic interactions between the enzyme and substrate. The most efficient variant, Pw ADH/DM, was immobilized onto magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles functionalized by the co -deposition of dopamine and polyethyleneimine. Under optimal conditions, this immobilization process achieved a high immobilization efficiency (85.4%) and activity recovery (76.9%). The immobilized enzyme exhibited enhanced pH stability and thermostability, along with good storage stability, reusability, and recyclability. More importantly, the immobilized enzyme completely degraded 100 ng/mL OTA in contaminated milk without affecting the milk's properties. These findings expand our understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing substrate binding and catalysis in OTA-degrading ADHs. Furthermore, they provide a blueprint for enzyme-based OTA decontamination during food processing.

Ammonia dysregulation is a common pathological feature linking hyperammonemia—a severe metabolic disorder- and colorectal cancer (CRC), yet current treatment options remain inadequate. Here, a first-in-class dual-pathway ammonia scavenging system is introduced based on a bioengineered microalgae-hydrogel oral formulation (SPB-CV@ALG), designed to simultaneously treat hyperammonemia and suppress CRC progression. This multifunctional system integrates Chlorella vulgaris (CV), capable of biologically capturing intestinal ammonia via extracellular adsorption and intracellular assimilation, with sodium phenylbutyrate (SPB), a clinically approved metabolic ammonia scavenger. These agents are co-encapsulated within a semi-interpenetrating sodium alginate–carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel, which enhances gastrointestinal retention, protects biological activity, and ensures colon-targeted release. In murine hyperammonemia models, SPB-CV@ALG significantly lowered systemic ammonia levels, rescued cognitive and behavioral deficits, and mitigated hepatic and cerebral pathology. Remarkably, the same formulation also inhibited tumor growth in both subcutaneous and orthotopic CRC models. Mechanistically, the therapy reshaped gut microbiota composition by enriching beneficial taxa such as Akkermansia muciniphila and depleting pro-tumorigenic Pseudomonadota , supporting a microbiota-mediated anti-cancer mechanism. Long-term safety studies confirmed favorable biocompatibility without systemic toxicity. This study presents a transformative therapeutic paradigm that leverages microalgae's natural metabolic functions for dual-disease intervention. The SPB-CV@ALG platform offers a safe, effective, and translational solution to address two major unmet clinical needs through integrated ammonia detoxification, tumor suppression, and microbiome modulation.

Organophosphorus nerve agents are among the most hazardous chemical warfare agents, posing serious risks to human health. Developing efficient catalysts and composite materials for their detoxification remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present the first example of zirconium oxide (ZrOx) nanozyme derived from a zirconium-based metal–organic framework (Zr-MOF), which exhibits outstanding catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of a nerve agent simulant, dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP). Moreover, ZrOx was incorporated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (dabco) as a base, forming a hydrogel composite membrane, named ZrOx@PD. Notably, ZrOx@PD demonstrates superior catalytic efficiency for the solid-phase hydrolysis of DMNP under ambient conditions, outperforming many previously reported catalytic materials and highlighting its potential as a protective material against nerve agents.

The growing demand for sustainable proteins has highlighted cottonseed meal (CSM) as a promising high-protein byproduct. Addressing the challenge of valorizing the annual global production of over 10 million tons of CSM in cottonseed processing, this study investigated the use of choline chloride-ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent (DES-4) for efficient protein extraction from CSM while reducing toxic gossypol content. Through Box-Behnken response surface optimization, we established optimal conditions (56 °C/3 h/40% water) that achieved 86.85% protein yield while remarkably reducing bound gossypol content from 10.24 mg/g to 2.76 mg/g. Molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) revealed that DES-4 enhance protein recovery and gossypol separation through synergistic mechanisms involving stabilizing solubility, relaxing matrix structure, and disrupting complexes. The obtained protein (CSMP-E) demonstrated superior solubility, emulsifying properties, and antioxidant activity compared to alkali-extracted counterparts. Furthermore, hydrolyzed DES-extracted protein (CSMP-EH) exhibited enhanced DPP-IV inhibitory activity (IC 50 = 1.949 mg/mL), suggesting its potential for type 2 diabetes management.

With the aid of radical and non-radical reactive species (RS), advanced oxidation processes can efficiently degrade emerging organic contaminants including antibiotics but may generate toxic transformation products (TPs). However, the detoxification capacity of popular RS has not been well elucidated. This study compared the detoxification of enrofloxacin (ENR) with three RS-dominated systems: 1 O 2 , SO 4 •- + • OH, • OH. The toxicity of ENR TPs generated from those systems was evaluated with multiple methods. It was found that the 1 O 2 -dominated system detoxified ENR more effectively than the other systems in terms of microbial respiratory inhibition, developmental toxicity in zebrafish embryos, and three typical molecular biomarkers, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Based on their chemical structures of ENR TPs projected with UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, the toxicity prediction tool (T.E.S.T) revealed that the 1 O 2 -dominated system led to more harmless TPs than the others. The results of this study underscore the great potential of 1 O 2 -dominated system in the detoxification of organic contaminants.

Bio-remediation are low-cost and environmentally friendly, but microbial enzymes tend to lose their activity when treated antibiotic contaminants due to its high toxicity. In this study, Bacillus megaterium Y-4 was demonstrated to in situ synthesize Pd 0 @cells, and detoxify oxytetracycline (OTC) through enhancing electron transport chain via Pd 0 -dependent F O F 1 -ATPase (proton pumps). Toxicity analyses showed that increasing Pd 0 loading significantly reduced acute and chronic bio-toxicity as well as ecological risk of OTC effluent, as evidenced by the promoting cellular response to oxidative stress with increasing enzymes GSH-Px and IDH activities (4.24 and 1.20-fold). Electrochemical (I-t, LSV, DPV and EDC) showed that the incorporated bio-Pd 0 mainly promoted FDH/Hase-based short chain (gradually took precedence over CoQ-based long chain), diverting OTC extracellular degradation to markedly detoxify OTC to cell. Inhibition (DCCD and TBA) assays and structural equation modelling indicated that bio-Pd 0 upregulated ATP and NADH synthesis. It also acted as transmembrane F O F 1 -ATPase proton pump, which enabled the backward of protons out of the restriction of PMF , eventually maximizing the energy utilization. This study sheds new insights into the detoxification of antibiotics by bio-nanoparticles through proton transmembrane transfer/redistribution.

Imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid pesticide that was reported to induce intestinal damage at low doses, necessitating effective intervention strategies. As a common component in food, glycine (GLY) has the capacity to alleviate intestinal damage. However, whether it can relieve the damage caused by imidacloprid leave to be clarified. This study investigated the protective effects of GLY (2% and 5%) against imidacloprid induced (0.06 mg/kg bw/day) intestinal injury in male Wistar rats. GLY supplementation attenuated intestinal permeability and enhanced the expression of tight junction proteins. Further, the pregnane X receptor-myosin light chain 2 signaling pathway that mediating imidacloprid-induced intestinal toxicity was also found repaired. GLY intervention increased the enzyme activities of cytochrome P450 3A4 and glutathione-S-transferase, which were responding for phase I and phase Ⅱ imidacloprid metabolism. Meanwhile, reduced levels of imidacloprid and its phase I metabolites, as well as increased phase Ⅱ detoxifying glutathione conjugates, both suggesting the protective role of GLY intervention through enhancing imidacloprid detoxification metabolism. Importantly, the amino acid signaling pathway related fecal metabolic profiles and microbiota composition in imidacloprid treated rats were also modulated and improved by GLY. Totally, our findings demonstrated the protective effect of GLY on intestinal damage caused by imidacloprid exposure, which provided ideas for preventing and controlling the toxicity of food contaminants.

Ionic liquids (ILs), also known as green solvents, are widely acknowledged in several fields, such as chemical separation, synthesis, and electrochemistry , owing to their excellent physiochemical properties. However, their poor biodegradability may lead to environmental and health risks, posing a severe threat to humans, thus requiring further research. In this study, the biotoxicities of the imidazolium-based ILs were evaluated in Tetrahymena pyriformis . Moreover, IL detoxification was investigated by addition of glutathione (GSH), cysteine, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) initiated by different IL types caused damage to Tetrahymena , while glutathione, cysteine, and NADH eliminated ROS, achieving the detoxification purposes. Detoxification results showed that NADH exhibited the best detoxification ability, followed by glutathione and cysteine. Finally, RT-PCR results suggested that metallothionein might have participated in IL detoxification.

BACKGROUND Boscalid is often used to extend the storage time of postharvest cherry tomato. Pesticide residue has become an issue of food safety. This study sought to investigate the spatial distribution of boscalid residue in cherry tomato fruits and to determine the effect of 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) in promoting boscalid degradation. RESULTS Boscalid could quickly penetrate into cherry tomatoes, but mainly remained in the peel. The migration of boscalid from the peel into the core was a time-consuming and complex process during storage. After 72 h, boscalid residues in the pulp and the core began to accumulate gradually. The exogenous application of EBR activated peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione S -transferase, and effectively promoted the degradation of boscalid by a maximum decrease of 44.8% in peel, 54.0% in pulp and 71.2% in core. CONCLUSION As one of the common pesticides, boscalid had a strong ability to enter the cherry tomato and thus become a potential risk for public consumption. Therefore, rational use of pesticides is recommended. The results of this study indicate that the possible risk of boscalid residue could be alleviated by EBR pretreatment through activating detoxification enzymes. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

In this work, the effects of different types of molecular intercalations on the morphology, photoelectrochemical performance, specific surface area and photocatalytic degradation propranolol (PRO) of BiOCl semiconductor-organic frameworks were studied by using different types of carbonate beverages (CBs) as solvents synthesized at room temperature. Interlayer organic molecules, as circuits of charge transmission can increase the strength of the electric field of the BiOCl layered structure and enhance the electronic coupling between layers. This, in turn, gives rise to narrowed bandgap energy and inhibited charge carrier recombination. Sugar (including fructose and glucose) molecules in the CB are helpful to insert into the BiOCl layer to make the thickness thinner, thus improving the specific surface area and light absorption capacity of BiOCl. Additionally, caramel molecules in CB can help broaden the light absorption and accelerate the charge transfer capacity of CB-BiOCl. The interaction of various molecules in the CB-BiOCl system significantly enhanced the photocatalytic degradation performance of PRO. Noticeably, twelve possible degradation intermediates were identified, and their toxicity decreased along with the degradation pathways. More importantly, the inhibiting effect of the degradation solution on zebrafish swimming activity weakened during the degradation process, indicating that the toxicity of the degradation solution gradually weakened. Furthermore, the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of PRO with molecules as the circuit of charge transmission of the BiOCl semiconductor-organic framework was proposed.

To identify the effects of poplar secondary metabolites on Lymantria dispar , six poplar secondary metabolites (i.e., caffeic acid , salicin , rutin , quercetin , flavone , and catechol) and three mixtures containing characteristic secondary metabolites in poplar were selected. Mixture 1 contained flavone and salicin, mixture 2 contained salicin, caffeic acid, and catechol , and mixture 3 contained flavone, catechol, and caffeic acid. Mixtures were added to artificial diets used to feed 2nd instar L. dispar larvae. The effects of different secondary metabolites on larval growth and development , antifeedant activity, nutrient utilization, and detoxifying enzymatic activity were investigated. Results revealed that there were different influences on L. dispar larvae. The maximum antifeedant rate of flavone was 87.58%. Larvae treated with mixture 2 had a significantly longer development time of 5.61 d with a survival rate of 38.75% for 15 d, which is lower than a single secondary metabolite. No L. dispar larvae survived on feeding diets containing flavone for 7 d. An increase in GST and P450 activities in larvae was significantly induced during the 72 h feeding on artificial diets containing experimental secondary metabolites. After treatment containing salicin and flavone for 24–72 h, P450 activity increased at first then decreased. These results provide a foundation for further investigation on the host selection and underlying adaptation mechanisms in L. dispar .
