Petroleum-based food packaging causes substantial environmental damage through waste accumulation and microplastic pollution. Therefore, replacing it with biodegradable polymers to extend the shelf life of food products is highly desirable. In this work, a bilayer functional composite with barrier properties and antimicrobial activity was developed for pork preservation. The outer barrier layer of gelatin/laponite (Ge/La) was fabricated by the casting method, while the inner antimicrobial layer of zein/eugenol (ZN/Eu) was prepared through direct electrospinning on Ge/La. The incorporation of La enhanced the thermal stability, mechanical strength, and moisture barrier of the outer layer, while the encapsulation of Eu endowed the inner layer with excellent antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Furthermore, the Eu release from ZN/Eu fibers was found to follow Fickian diffusion. The bilayer composite of Ge/La@ZN/Eu can prolong pork shelf life by 1 d at 25 °C, demonstrating its great potential in active food packaging

Reasonable heteroatom doping and structural construction can improve the performance of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials. Eugenol-acrylate monomer (EAM) with rich double bonds is synthesized from eugenol and acrylic anhydride by esterification without solvation. EAM and acrylonitrile (AN) are used as raw materials, the EAM as a source of carbon, the AN as nitrogen source. According to different molar ratios, a series of eugenol-group polymer microspheres with particle size ranging from 0.8 to 1.5μm are prepared by precipitation polymerization through one-pot method. Furthermore, N-doped carbonization microspheres with excellent EMW absorption properties are prepared by a controlled carbonization process with particle size ranging from 0.4 to 1.0μm. In this study, the molar ratios of EAM and AN are adjusted to optimize the EMW absorption properties of the prepared EMW absorbing materials of carbonization microspheres. It is confirmed that carbonization microspheres have good EMW absorption performance at an EAM to AN ratio of 7:3 and a thickness of 3 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) is −40.89 dB (12.56 GHz), and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 5.01 GHz (10.01–15.02 GHz). In this work, derivatives of eugenol with rich double-bond from a wide range of sources are involved in the process of copolymerizing microspheres maintained morphological stability before and after carbonization, which provided an efficient and easy method for the preparation of nitrogen and oxygen doped carbon microspheres, enriched the types of wave absorbing materials, and laid a foundation for future work.

Edible films from chitosan (CH) containing various amount of acorn starch (AS) and eugenol (Eu) were developed by casting and solvent-evaporation method, and their physico-chemical, barrier, antimicrobial, antioxidant and structural properties were also investigated. The experimental data showed that an appropriate proportion of AS could improve the mechanical and barrier properties of the film, and the incorporation of Eu in the film significantly improved the flexibility, barrier, hydrophobicity , antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The results showed that the optimum comprehensive properties of the film were obtained when the mass ratio of AS to CH was 0.9 and the content of Eu was 9%. Possible intermolecular interactions between CH, AS and Eu were confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). SEM indicated that a good compatibility was present between CH and AS, and Eu was well emulsified and dispersed in the film matrix network. TG and DTG curves further confirmed Eu present in the film matrix network. Such edible films can provide new ways for packaging industries in developing active packaging materials.

Harvesting biobased silane coupling agent to enhance the connection between fillers and epoxy matrix is vital to achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly products. In this work, a eugenol based epoxy silane-coupling agent with high purity was prepared and used for the surface modification of nano-sized silica particles. The surface structure composition and physical properties of the modified nano-SiO 2 were characterized through nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transferred infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analyzer. An epoxy nanocomposite was subsequently prepared by incorporating the resulting modified nano-SiO 2 as an enhancing filler. The nanocomposites glass transition temperature, the morphology of fracture surface, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermostability were investigated. Results showed that the eugenol epoxy silane-coupling agent bearing a long chain structure of benzene ring in the molecular structure could improve the compatibility of silica fillers with epoxy resin and contribute to a better dispersion state in the matrix, thus enhancing the overall performance of epoxy-cured products.

The high volatility of eugenol severely restricts its application in long-lasting fragrances. While microencapsulation is a common solution, conventional materials face significant limitations: melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microcapsules raise safety concerns, while monolithic polymer shells often undergo swelling and rupture, leading to premature leakage. Herein, we present a novel and safe microencapsulation platform based on an in-situ core viscosification strategy. We designed double-shelled microcapsules featuring an inner sacrificial shell of poly (styrene-acrylic acid) and an outer rigid shell of cross-linked polystyrene. The pivotal innovation lies in the post-encapsulation dissolution of the inner shell by eugenol, which transforms the liquid core into a highly viscous, polymer-rich matrix. This transformation intrinsically retards fragrance diffusion, without compromising the initial capsule formation. Systematic optimization of fabrication parameters yielded microcapsules with exceptional mechanical strength, exhibiting a rupture force of 7.24 ± 0.39 mN and toughness of 2.42 ± 0.24 J/m 3 . Release kinetics and thermal analysis demonstrated a profound enhancement in sustained release, with exhibited remarkably sustained release behavior compared to conventional MF microcapsules, and a major release event shifted to a temperature over 100 °C higher. This work presents an in-situ core viscosification strategy driven by synergistic sacrificial-layer dissolution and molecular entanglement for sustained fragrance delivery, offering a high-performance, formaldehyde-free alternative for cosmetics and textiles.

This study was aimed at evaluating the potential of peach gum (PG) and gelatin in the microencapsulation of eugenol and the intervention of eugenol microcapsules on hepatic steatosis in vitro. Response surface method (RSM) was used to optimize the encapsulation conditions of eugenol microcapsules. The microcapsules were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and release behavior in vitro was determined. The effect of eugenol microcapsules on free fatty acids (FFA) treated hepatocellular cells (HepG2) cells was evaluated by oil red O staining and intracellular total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) determination. The results showed that the optimal encapsulation conditions were as follows: the PG-gelatin ratio was 1.6:1.4, the core-wall ratio was 1.6:1.4, the pH was 4 and the emulsification speed was 9000 r/min. The optimized microcapsules were smooth spherical with a size of about 3.09 ± 0.58 μm and the encapsulation was confirmed by FT-IR. In vitro release behavior showed that eugenol microcapsules could be released stably in a neutral environment for 72 h. Oil red O staining showed that 50 and 100 μM eugenol microcapsules could significantly inhibit the lipid accumulation and reduce the TC and TG in steatotic HepG2 cells induced by FFA. Therefore, PG and gelatin can be used as excellent carriers for the microencapsulation of volatile compounds in the field of biomedical industry, and eugenol microcapsules is a promising preparation for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Eugenol, as an active compound isolated from Acorus gramineus, has been shown to protect against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Nonetheless, the detailed neuroprotective mechanisms of eugenol in cerebral I/R injury have not been elaborated. In the present study, cerebral I/R injury model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats. HT22 cells were subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) to mimic cerebral I/R injury in vitro. The results showed that eugenol pre-treatment relieved cerebral I/R injury as evidenced by improving neurological deficits and reducing infarct volume. Autophagy was induced by MCAO, which was further promoted by eugenol administration. Moreover, rapamycin, an activator of autophagy, promoted eugenol-induced decreases in neurological score, infarct volume, brain water content, and apoptosis. However, pretreatment with 3-MA, an inhibitor of autophagy, led to the opposite results. Similarly, eugenol pretreatment increased the viability and restrained apoptosis of OGD/R-challenged HT22 cells. OGD/R-induced autophagy was strengthened by eugenol. Mechanically, eugenol promoted autophagy through regulating AMPK/mTOR/P70S6K signaling pathway in vivo and in vitro. In conclusion, pretreatment with eugenol attenuated cerebral I/R injury by inducing autophagy via AMPK/mTOR/P70S6K signaling pathway.

In order to reduce dependence on petroleum resources, three different biobased epoxy monomers (Eu-EP-1, Eu-EP-2, and Eu-EP-3) with a biobased carbon content of 76.9%–83.3% were prepared from eugenol, which can be derived from lignin. Three eugenol-based epoxy thermosets (Eu-EP-1/IPDA, Eu-EP-2/IPDA, and Eu-EP-3/IPDA) were then obtained by curing Eu-EP monomer with a commercial IPDA (isophorone diamine) hardener; the curing activation energy was in the range of 37.4–48.2 kJ/mol, the gel content ranged from 95.4%–96.5%, and the cross-linking degree reached 1185–2119 mol/m3, confirming that Eu-EP and IPDA were cured to form cross-linking network structures. Therefore, the Eu-EP/IPDA thermosets had excellent in-service performance with a Tg of 63.9–76.3 °C and a tensile strength of 34.7–43.1 MPa. However, the Eu-EP/IPDA thermosets with permanent chemical bonds were difficult to recycle. Since Eu-EP-2/IPDA had balanced performance, Eu-EP-2 was selected to develop recyclable Eu-EP/AFD epoxy vitrimers by curing with AFD (4,4′-dithiodiphenylamine). The resulting Eu-EP-2/AFD1.00 epoxy vitrimer had a Tg of 79.4 °C and a tensile strength of 39.2 MPa, and the remodeling of the Eu-EP-2/AFD1.00 epoxy vitrimer could be achieved by hot pressing at 200 °C for 6 h; the self-healing of the scratched material could be achieved by heating at 180 °C for 2 h, and the Eu-EP-2/AFD1.00 epoxy vitrimer could be dissolved in mercaptoethanol. Therefore, Eu-EP is a potential sustainable epoxy monomer for the development of epoxy materials with a balanced in-service performance and recyclability. This study offers a facile solution for the development of sustainable eugenol-based epoxy materials.

Poplar wood flour, a low-cost and abundantly available material, was modified by grafting β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD) in the presence of citric acid or 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic acid, aiming to expand the application of wood flour. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the technique of phenolphthalein probe. The grafting conditions of β -CD onto wood flour including curing temperature, β -CD concentration in impregnation solution and catalyst were also evaluated by the technique of phenolphthalein probe. Besides, eugenol (EG), an antibacterial fragrant guest molecule, was loaded on the modified wood flour by lyophilization, and its release characteristics were investigated by Thermo-gravimetric. The results revealed that the modified wood flour material had a thermo-protective effect on the volatilization of EG and the encapsulated EG content was reached to 1.31 %, which could demonstrate a potential application in the finishing and packing areas.

To explore the dihydromyricetin or eugenol loaded nanofiber's potential as food active packaging, 0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0% dihydromyricetin or eugenol loaded nanofibers were fabricated by electro-blowing spinning, which increased the yield of nanofibers by a factor of 10 times compared to that of traditional electrospinning. The morphology observation by scanning electron microscopy showed similar morphology and diameter distribution of the dihydromyricetin or eugenol nanofibers. Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis indicated that eugenol or dihydromyricetin interacted with proteins through hydrogen bonding. X-ray diffraction profiles of the nanofibers indicated that dihydromyricetin was uniformly distributed within the nanofibers. Nanofibers encapsulated with various concentrations of eugenol or dihydromyricetin showed better barrier properties against water vapors than the free nanofibers, which indicated that the hydrophobic eugenol and dihydromyricetin inhibited the permeation of water molecules through the nanofibers. Tensile tests showed that the nanofibers loaded with 0.5% eugenol or 1.0% dihydromyricetin exhibited relatively higher elastic moduli and lower elongation at break. The nanofibers loaded with dihydromyricetin showed comparable antioxidant activity to that with eugenol in the aspect of ferric and cupper reducing activity, while that with 0.1%–1.0% dihydromyricetin showed superior DPPH radical scavenging activity. Furthermore, both eugenol and dihydromyricetin loaded gelatin/zein nanofibers showed effective antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Overall, the dihydromyricetin loaded gelatin/zein nanofibers showed comparable physical and functional properties compared to eugenol, which suggests the application of dihydromyricetin nanofibrous films on food active packaging and the potential application of dihydromyricetin on functional food delivery systems.

To develop novel antiviral agents, some novel conjugates between ferulic acid and eugenol or isoeugenol were designed and synthesized by the link reaction. The antiviral activities of compounds were evaluated using the half leaf dead spot method. Bioassay results showed acceptable antiviral activities of some conjugates against the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Compounds A9, A10, E1, and E4 showed remarkable curative, protective, and inactivating effects on TMV and CMV at 500 μg mL–1. Notably, these compounds exhibited excellent protective effects on TMV and CMV. The EC50 values of compounds A9, A10, E1, and E4 against TMV were 180.5, 169.5, 211.4, and 135.5 μg mL–1, respectively, and those against CMV were 210.5, 239.1, 218.4, and 178.6 μg mL–1, respectively, which were superior to those of ferulic acid (471.5 and 489.2 μg mL–1), eugenol (456.3 and 463.2 μg mL–1), isoeugenol (478.4 and 487.5 μg mL–1), and ningnanmycin (246.5 and 286.6 μg mL–1). Then, the antiviral mechanisms of compound E4 were investigated by determining defensive enzyme activities and multi-omics analysis. The results indicated that compound E4 resisted the virus infection by enhancing defensive responses via inducing the accumulation of secondary metabolites from the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway in tobacco.

Tribolium castaneum ( T. castaneum ) is a worldwide pest of stored grain that mainly harms flour, and not only causes serious loss of flour quality but also leads to deterioration of flour quality. Chemical detection plays a key role in insect behavior, and the role of odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) in insect chemical detection has been widely studied. However, the mechanism of OBPs in insect defense against exogenous toxic substances is still unclear. In this study, biochemical analysis showed that eugenol , the active component of A. vulgaris essential oil , significantly induced the expression of the OBP gene OBPC12 from T. castaneum ( TcOBPC12 ). The mortality of late larvae treated with eugenol was higher than that of the control group after RNA interference (RNAi) against TcOBPC12 , which indicates that the OBP gene is involved in the eugenol defense mechanism and leads to a decrease in sensitivity to eugenol. Tissue expression profiling showed that the expression of TcOBPC12 in the epidermis, hemolymph, and intestine was higher than in other larval tissues, and TcOBPC12 was expressed mainly in the epidermis, head, and fat body of adults. The developmental expression profile showed that the expression of TcOBPC12 in late eggs, early and late larval stages, and late adult stages was higher than in other developmental stages. These data suggest that TcOBPC12 may be involved in the absorption of exogenous toxic substances by the larvae from T. castaneum . Our results provide a theoretical basis for the metabolism and degradation mechanism of exogenous toxic substances and help explore more potential target genes of insect pests .
