Topology-Engineered Hyperbranched Zwitterionic Polymer Enabling Robust Hydration Lubrication in Osteoarthritic Joints

Jing Guo,Kun Luo,Xin-Yu Dai,Yao Li,Teng Fu,Lei-Xiao Yu,Ke-Ke Yang

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease, which is largely driven by the deterioration of cartilage lubrication. However, current lubricants, such as hyaluronic acid (HA), suffer from poor mechanical resilience and rapid enzymatic degradation. Herein, we develop a structurally engineered lubricant, HPG-g-pSBMA (HgS), constructed by grafting zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (pSBMA) chains onto a globular hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) core. The hyperbranched topology minimizes molecular entanglement and shear thinning, while the dense zwitterionic shell forms a robust hydration layer that resists compression and frictional wear. HgS exhibits superior lubrication efficacy at a low concentration (1 mg/mL) with enhanced injectability, significantly outperforming 10 mg/mL HA. Molecular simulations reveal strong hydration shell formation and hydration-mediated disruption of solute–solute interactions. HgS demonstrates excellent biocompatibility and enzymatic stability, prolonged intra-articular retention, and effective inhibition of OA progression in vivo. This work highlights a topology-guided design strategy for durable and efficient joint lubricants for OA treatment.

Low-temperature-tolerant hydrogels via a polyanionic hydration strategy for flexible sensors

Chuanyong Yan,Lei Liu,Shikun Wen,Yujie Wu,Wanjuan Huang,Chunyin Lu,Junjun Wang,Mingbo Yang

Polyanionic hydration enables anti-freezing to −80 °C without small-molecule agents. • Hydrogel shows 1000% stretchability, adhesion, and >88% recovery at −40 °C. • Polyanionic framework stabilizes ions/water, yielding 0.07-4.32 S/m conductivity. • Integrated sensors reliably monitor motion and temperature even at −40 °C. The freezing behavior of hydrogels at sub-zero temperatures significantly hinders their application in flexible electronics. However, the prevalent strategy of incorporating small-molecule anti-freezing agents often results in solute leaching, which undermines the environmental durability and long-term stability of the materials. In this work, we present a polyanionic hydration-based design incorporating carboxylate and sulfonate groups into the polymer network. This approach establishes a hydration architecture with hierarchical binding energies, thereby endowing the hydrogel with intrinsic anti-freezing properties and eliminating the requirement for conventional small-molecule additives. Within this system, the polyanionic framework stabilizes water molecules via hierarchical ion-dipole interactions, which disrupt the intrinsic hydrogen-bonding network and inhibit ice nucleation and crystal growth. Consequently, no detectable freezing transition was observed for the hydrogel within the tested temperature range down to −80°C. Meanwhile, the hydrogel demonstrated an ionic conductivity of 4.32 S/m, a recovery efficiency of 90%, an elongation of 1000%, and stable adhesion. Flexible sensors integrated with this hydrogel demonstrate the capability to monitor human motion reliably even under sub-zero conditions. This strategy offers a viable approach for the design of intrinsically anti-freezing hydrogels and establishes a basis for the development of sensing devices in cold environments. Hydrophilic microparticle reinforced polycarbonate-urethane for hydration lubrication in artificial joint applications

Fei Wang,Junwei Feng,Wenao Liao,Ting Li,Yidan Hu,Jing Chen,Xiaojing Wu,Xilin Liu

Polycarbonate-urethane (PCU), a versatile polymer distinguished by its remarkable mechanical robustness and superior biocompatibility, has garnered significant attention as a potential material for joint replacement implants. However, its suboptimal wettability in aqueous environments leads to elevated friction and wear under wet tribological conditions, limiting long-term clinical performance. Herein, a novel strategy to address this challenge by incorporating crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microparticles into PCU was proposed. The hydrophilic PVA microparticles enhance surface wettability and establish a robust hydration layer, significantly improving boundary lubrication. Remarkably, even at a minimal loading of 0.3 wt% PVA microparticles, the composite demonstrates a friction coefficient of 0.117 and a specific wear rate of 1.01 × 10 –6  mm 3 /N·m in calf serum, representing reductions of 68.8% and 90.3%, respectively, compared to pristine PCU. Furthermore, the composite retains outstanding tensile strength (36.6 MPa) and elongation at break (2528.7%), while exhibiting excellent biocompatibility. These findings suggest that the material holds potential for artificial joint applications, with improved durability and promising lubrication performance.

Interlayer water absorption expansion and surface hydration properties of montmorillonite and kaolinite

Jingqi Zhang,Yaoli Peng,Chuanjia Wang,Wenhao Zhang,Xiaoman Luo

In this study, kaolinite, Ca-montmorillonite, and Na-montmorillonite were used as research objects to study the adsorption behavior of water molecules in clay minerals. The adsorption behavior of water molecules on the surface and interlayers of clay minerals was studied by density functional theory, XRD, Einstein viscosity theory, surface morphology, TG/DSC, and molecular dynamics. The experimental results show that under the same number of water molecules, the interlayer spacing of Na-montmorillonite increases slowly. After high-temperature dehydration, the interlayer spacing change of Na-montmorillonite is small. In the water-saturated state, the interlayer spacing of Na-montmorillonite is larger than that of Ca-montmorillonite. High-temperature removal of interlayer water has a small effect on the interlayer spacing of kaolinite. The thickness of the surface hydration film and the degree of hydration of Ca-montmorillonite are greater than those of Na-montmorillonite. The thickness of the surface hydration film of kaolinite (00-1) is greater than that of kaolinite (001), and the thickness of the surface hydration film and the degree of hydration of kaolinite are less than those of montmorillonite. The higher water absorption rate of Na-montmorillonite interlayers is the main reason for its higher water content than Ca-montmorillonite.

Clinkering and hydration of alite-belite-ye'elimite cement with increasing ye'elimite percentage

Yuanrui Li,Ying Ma,Xiaodong Shen,Qiang Meng,Yuwei Li

Alite-belite-ye'elimite (ABY) cement is considered to be eco-cements with adequate mechanical properties and fewer CO 2 emissions. The phase assemblage and ye’elimite content of ABY cement play a very important role in cement properties. In this study, ABY clinkers with increasing ye'elimite percentage (0.3 wt%-36.4 wt%) were prepared at 1300 °C and the phase composition was characterized by Rietveld Quantitative Phase Analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The ye'elimite formed with a calculated composition of Ca 3.92 Mg 0.02 Al 2.81 Fe 0.05 Si 0.04 S 1.16 , incorporating additional sulfur compared to the theoretical value. In addition, the hydration properties of heat evolution, hydration products and compressive strength of ABY cement are studied. The result shows that the increase of ye'elimite content leads to a more intense initial heat release and a higher cumulative heat release. The presence of ye'elimite inhibits the hydration of alite at early ages. ABY mortars with increasing ye'elimite (15.8 wt%) exhibited a higher strength (29.6 MPa) at 3 days by the contribution of ye'elimite hydration, and an increase (47.4 MPa) at 28 days. An adequate proportion of ye'elimite (<15 wt%) is favorable to the performance of ABY cement, and releases 12   % less CO 2 .

Effect of starch-based admixtures on the exothermic process of cement hydration

Yu Yan,Rui Wang,Wenbin Wang,Cheng Yu,Jiaping Liu

The effect of three types of starch-based admixtures, namely glucose and its derivatives, soluble dextrin with various degree of polymerization and a novel starch-based temperature rise inhibitor (TRI) with various degree of starch acidification on the exothermic process of cement hydration has been investigated through the calorimetry measurements. Except delaying the appearance of the main hydration peak as the retarding effect, starch-based admixtures can also reduce the heat flow during the acceleration period and induce a lower maximum heat flow as the depressing effect. Together with the dissolution and adsorption results, it can be concluded that the relationship between these two effects is determined by the action time of molecule in the cement paste . The soluble admixtures with fairly short action time focus mainly on disturbing the cement hydration during the induction period but have minor effect on depressing the main hydration peak. TRI with limited dissolution can persistently inhibit the cement hydration over a longer period of action time, inducing negligible retarding effect but apparent depressing effect.

Infrared Spectroscopic Insight into Hydration Behavior of Poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) in Water

Shengtong Sun,Peiyi Wu

IR spectroscopy in combination with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) and the perturbation correlation moving window (PCMW) technique is employed to illustrate the dynamic hydration behavior of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) in water, which exhibits a typical type I continuous lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. PCMW easily determined the transition temperature to be ca. 43.5 °C during heating and ca. 42.5 °C during cooling and the transition temperature range to be 39.5–45 °C. On the other hand, 2DCOS was used to discern the sequence order of different species in PVCL and concluded that hydrogen bonding transformation predominates at the first stage below LCST while hydrophobic interaction predominates at the second stage above LCST. In combination with molecular dynamics simulation results, we find that there exists a distribution gradient of water molecules in PVCL mesoglobules ranging from a hydrophobic core to a hydrophilic surface. Due to the absence of self-associated hydrogen bonds and topological constraints, PVCL mesoglobules would form a “sponge-like” structure which can further continuously expel water molecules upon increasing temperature, while poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with self-associated hydrogen bonds forms mesoglobules with a “cotton-ball-like” structure without an apparent distribution gradient of water molecules and does not change much upon increasing temperature.

Enhanced CO2 Chemisorption Properties of Li4SO4, Using a Water Hydration–Calcination Technique

Zeguang Yin,Ke Wang,Pengfei Zhao,Xiaoli Tang

The water hydration and subsequent calcination (denoted as hydration–calcination) technique was used to modify the microstructure of lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) prepared by solid-state reactions. The original and modified Li4SiO4 sorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The cyclic capacity of these sorbents was further examined using a dual fixed-bed reactor. After treatment by water hydration, most of the Li4SiO4 transformed into LiOH and Li2SiO3. Moreover, following subsequent calcination, the sample exhibited a looser structure with a smaller particle size compared with the original Li4SiO4. This favorable structure was responsible for improved CO2 chemisorption properties, as measured by a higher capacity, faster absorption kinetics, and improved stability.

In Situ Characterization of the Hydration Structure at the Silica–Water Interface

Zhaoyang Sun,Jile Jiang,Jingyang Li,Zhonghuan Xiang,Hui Cao,Pengpeng Bai,Liran Ma,Yonggang Meng,Yu Tian

The structure of interfacial water at silica–water interfaces plays a key role in surface forces, colloidal stability, and interfacial transport processes. However, a quantitative understanding of how interfacial forces govern hydration-layer formation remains incomplete, particularly under varying electrolyte conditions. In this work, colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy (AFM) and three-dimensional AFM are combined to simultaneously characterize interfacial forces and hydration structures on silica surfaces in pure water and NaCl solutions. In pure water, the interface exhibits a bilayer hydration structure with relatively large layer spacing, whereas in electrolyte solutions, a transition to a more compact trilayer structure is observed. Force measurements reveal that the effective interaction evolves nonmonotonically with increasing ionic strength, reflecting the combined contributions of electrostatic double-layer forces, van der Waals interactions, and short-range hydration forces. Beyond identifying structural transitions, the key novelty of this work lies in establishing a quantitative correlation between real-space hydration-structure evolution and the synchronous, nonmonotonic variation of net interfacial forces on realistic oxide surfaces. By correlating force–distance profiles with hydration-layer thickness, we show that repulsive interactions are associated with expanded and loosely structured hydration layers, while attractive interactions promote confinement and reduced layer thickness. The results further indicate that surface silanol groups play a dominant role in stabilizing compact hydration structures across a wide range of ionic strengths. These findings provide a quantitative link between interfacial forces and hydration-layer organization at silica–water interfaces and contribute to a better understanding of hydration forces in aqueous systems.

Regulation of early hydration and microstructure of cement slurry by cellulose nanofibers

Kaiqiang Liu,Wenli Tang,Lieqiang Luo,Guihai Li,Haiping Wang,Xingguo Zhang

In this study, cellulose nanofibres (CNFs) with different structures were prepared using ball-milling and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-mediated (TEMPO) oxidation. Then, microcalorimeter, scanning electron microscope, electrical conductivity, and micro-CT were used to investigate the interaction mechanisms between the CNFs and cement slurry. The results showed that the combination of ball-milling and TEMPO oxidation produced CNFs with carboxyl functional groups. When the NaClO concentration was 2 mmol/g and oxidation time was 2 h, the carboxyl content on the surface of the nanofibres was 0.0856 mmol/g. Based on the hydration rate and electrical conductivity results, the carboxylated CNFs reduced the hydration rate of the cement slurry and delayed the exothermic peak by 0.5–2.3 h. The decrease rate of the electrical conductivity of the cement slurry during transition stage increased from 2.805 to 3.543–5.142 mS/(cm·h). The electrical conductivity of the solid–liquid two-phase cement slurry was mainly provided by the pore solution. The decrease in the electrical conductivity of the cement slurry during the transition stage could mainly be attributed to the formation of hydration products that changed the microstructure of the cement slurry from ‘dispersed particles’ to a ‘gel grid’ during the hydration acceleration stage, the porosity and pore connectivity of cement slurry are reduced. The zeta potential results indicate that CNF in the cement slurry provides a location for the nucleation and growth of early hydration products through adsorption and bridging effects, changes the microstructure of the cement slurry, and accelerates the transition from liquid to solid state.

Hydration of Alkali Metal and Halide Ions from Static and Dynamic Viewpoints

Zhuanfang Jing,Yongquan Zhou,Toshio Yamaguchi,Koji Yoshida,Kazutaka Ikeda,Koji Ohara,Guangguo Wang

Ion hydration in aqueous solutions plays a paramount role in many fields. Despite many studies on ion hydration, the nature of ion hydration is not consistently understood at the molecular level. Combining neutron scattering (NS), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and molecular dynamics (MD), we quantify the ionic hydration degree (hydration ability) systematically for a series of alkali metal and halide ions based on static and dynamic hydration numbers. The former is based on the orientational correlation of water molecules bound to an ion derived from the positional information from NS and WAXS. The latter is defined as the mean number of water molecules remaining in the first coordination shell of an ion over a residence time of bound water molecules around the ion from MD. The static and dynamic hydration numbers distinguish hydration from coordination and quantify the ionic hydration degree, which provides a valuable reference for understanding various phenomena in nature.

Multi-Hydration Induced Zwitterionic Hydrogel with Open Environment Stability for Chemical Sensing

Tianshi Zhang,Jiguang Li,Baiyi Zu,Xincun Dou

Hydrogels with open environment stability are of great significance in the fields of microelectronics, organ regeneration, and hydrogel-based sensors. Although a series of strategies for exploring highly robust hydrogels have been proposed, it is still challenging to improve environmental stability while maintaining the original dispersed medium feature. Here, 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium (VBIM) and acrylic acid (AA) are used as the anionic and cationic monomers to prepare zwitterionic hydrogels through the thermal initiation polymerization. The prepared PAA-IL (polyacrylic acid- co -ionic liquid) hydrogel forms a large number of multi-hydration, including hydrogen bonds and ion-dipole interactions with water to inhibit the freezing and volatilization of water, and it possesses good structural stability due to the formation of ion bond self-association through interchain charge interaction. The robust stability of the chemical sensor with PAA-IL hydrogels as the substrate at different pH and temperature verifies the validity of the proposed design strategy. It is expected that the present zwitterionic hydrogel design strategy would shine a light on the exploration of environment-stable hydrogels and hydrogel-based chemical sensors.
