This study elucidates the mechanism by which hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] synergistically promotes malathion biodegradation in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Exposure to 5 mg/L Cr(VI) significantly enhanced the malathion degradation rate by 2.3-fold, achieving 96.79 % removal within 72 h under optimized conditions (5 % inoculum, pH 6). Analysis of cell membrane parameters combined with microscopic observation techniques indicated that Cr(VI) induced biofilm densification and membrane lipid peroxidation. Metabolomic profiling identified three critical Cr(VI)-activated pathways: (1)tryptophan-mediated redox homeostasis, (2)sulfur assimilation for antioxidant substances biosynthesis, and (3)cofactor biosynthesis for electron transport optimization. These metabolic adaptations increased membrane permeability and accelerated reactive oxygen species diffusion. The findings highlight Cr(VI) as a metabolic modulator that reprograms microbial catabolism via redox signaling, providing a mechanistic basis for developing biocatalysis strategies in multi-pollutant environments.

The high residual nature of organophosphorus pesticides poses a potential risk to the environment and human health through bioaccumulation . Herein, by using Fe 3 O 4 nanoclusters (NCs) as the nucleation center and polyvinyl pyrrolidone as the stabilization layer, Cu-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) were directly grown around Fe 3 O 4 NCs to form core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @Cu-MOFs composites (FCF). Then, the fluorescence properties of FCF were used to construct a fluorescence biosensor for the detection of organophosphorus pesticide residues in vegetables. The bi-enzyme function between acetylcholinesterase and choline oxidase can produce hydrogen peroxide, which can oxidize ferrous ions to ferric ions thus influencing the fluorescence of FCF. Based on the ability of malathion pesticides to inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity, the biosensor demonstrated a linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration of the malathion in the range of 5 ng/mL to 50 μg/mL with a detection limit of 4.2 ng/mL. Furthermore, the FCF was combined with agarose gels to realize the visualization detection of malathion. This novel fluorescent nanocomposite offers promising applications for the visual detection of malathion and in situ imaging of vegetables, establishing a new pathway to develop high-performance fluorescent materials for environmental and food safety.

An enzyme-free electrochemical method is described for the determination of trace levels of malathion. It is based on a nanostructured copper-cerium oxide (CuO-CeO 2 ) composite prepared by calcination of a Cu(II)/Ce(III) metal-organic framework. The morphology, crystal structure and elemental composition of composite was studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The principle for malathion determination is based on the fact that the redox signal of CuO (best measured at around −0.1 V vs. SCE) (at 100 mV/s) is inhibited by malathion due to affinity between CuO and the sulfur groups of malathion. The introduction of CeO 2 into the composite system further improves the analytical performance. This is attributed to the unique microstructure and the synergistic effect between CuO and CeO 2 . Experimental parameters like solution pH value, Cu/Ce molar ratio, accumulation potential, accumulation time, and CuO-CeO 2 volume on the electrode were optimized. The assay has a linear range of 10 fM to 100 nM and a 3.3 fM detection limit (at S/N = 3). The electrode is selectively inhibited by malathion even in the presence of potentially interfering substances.
A sensitive and effective enzyme-free electrochemical sensor has been developed for the detection of malathion based on CuO-CeO 2 composite derived from bimetallic metal-organic frameworks.

Herein, a novel electrochemical sensor based on zirconium-doped cobalt oxyhydroxide (ZrCoOOH) was proposed for highly sensitive non-enzymatic determination of malathion (MAL). The doping of Zr can improve the electrical conductivity of CoOOH, of which the transfer resistance was reduced from 241.1 Ω to 140.2 Ω. Furthermore, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that part of Co 2+ was converted to Co 3+ due to the introduction of Zr. The Co 3+ in ZrCoOOH could react with MAL to form Co 2+ , which enhanced the electrooxidation current of Co 2+ . Therefore, the peak current of Co 2+ was served as detection probe for MAL. Under optimal conditions, the developed sensor established the linear relationship for MAL in the concentration range of 0.001–10.0 μM with a low limit of detection (0.64 nM). The constructed sensor was employed to detect MAL in food samples (peach, kiwi fruit, spinach and tomato), verifying the accuracy and practicability of the sensor.
