The co-mingled plumes of chloroethenes and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) raise a major challenge for groundwater remediation. This study is the first try to apply sulfidated nano zero-valent iron supported on calcined layered double oxides (S-nZVI@LDO) for simultaneous removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Our findings revealed that 2 g/L S-nZVI@LDO simultaneously removed 73.3 % TCE and 37.8 % PFOA in pure water, with 49.5 % TCE degraded to less chlorinated products and 23.8 % adsorbed or unquantified transformation of C 3 –C 6 hydrocarbons. Comparative experiments using individual and co-occurring TCE and PFOA revealed that co-existing PFOA and TCE minimally affected their respective removal efficiencies, highlighting S-nZVI@LDO’s suitability for co-contaminant remediation. Furthermore, S-nZVI@LDO achieved optimal TCE and PFOA removal under acidic conditions, surpassing non-composite S-nZVI and LDO. Based on the characterization of S-nZVI@LDO, TCE removal involved reductive dechlorination and sorption via hydrophobic interactions, while PFOA removal was primarily driven by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. In real groundwater, S-nZVI@LDO achieved 58.2 % TCE and 33.7 % PFOA removal. Additionally, S-nZVI@LDO simultaneously removed nine different PFASs from a 12-PFASs mixture and demonstrated greater effectiveness for long-chain PFASs and their alternatives (e.g., GenX) owing to their hydrophobic nature. These findings highlight the potential of S-nZVI@LDO as an effective material for TCE-PFOA co-contaminated groundwater.

Developing efficient, stable, and user-friendly adsorbents for removing uranium from radioactive wastewater is critical for ensuring the security of nuclear energy development. Here, a fixed adsorbent (nZVI@NC/CF), composed of in-situ derived N-doped carbon (NC) encapsulated nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) coated on carbon fiber (CF), was synthesized via carbonizing Prussian blue decorated CF, and used to synergistically adsorb and reduce UO 2 2+ from contaminated water. The optimized nZVI@NC/CF exhibited an extremely high adsorption capacity of 2120.27 mg g −1 with a superior adsorption rate, and about 56.8 % fixed uranium was reduced into insoluble U(IV) species. This outstanding adsorption activity could be ascribed to the strong reducing property of nZVI and the package of NC that effectively prevented the agglomeration of nZVI and facilitated the adsorption and reduction of UO 2 2+ due to the rich adsorption sites and good charge transport property. The nZVI@NC/CF also showed excellent anti-interference properties and regeneration performance that exhibited great potential in treating real uranium wastewater and extracting uranium from seawater. Mechanism study revealed that the fixation of UO 2 2+ was mainly achieved through the synergistical adsorption by NC and reduction by nZVI, complexation by hydroxyl groups, and hydrolytic precipitation by local OH − . This study underscores the potential of nZVI@NC/CF as a highly effective adsorbent material, and provides valuable insights into developing efficient, stable, and easily manageable materials for uranium recovery.

Cadmium (Cd) emissions have a negative impact on both human health and the environment. Although nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) offers a lot of potential for water pollution treatment, it has been constrained by its instability and ease of aggregation. For the elimination of Cd(II) from aqueous solution, nZVI/MCM supported nZVI (nZVI/MCM-41/rGO) was designed to improve its dispersion and stability. It had a rough, porous structure with apparent Fe (0) crystallinity and slight rGO crystallinity. On the surface of nZVI/MCM-41/rGO, several oxygen-containing groups were detected. The specific surface area was 15.94 cm 2 /g, and the pore diameter was concentrated at 23.82 nm. The best performance was occurred at pH 6 with an adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L, and a maximum adsorption capacity of 31 mg/g was achieved after 600 min. Cd(II) removal process was well fitted with second-order kinetic, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. The thermodynamic parameter was also analyzed and proved that it was an endothermic (ΔH° > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) progress. During adsorption, the crystal type and functional groups of nZVI/MCM-41/rGO did not change, but Fe (0) was oxidized.

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is widely used for decontamination . The main issues associated with nZVI are agglomeration and oxidation in the long term. In this study, the carbothermal reduction of cotton fiber was conducted for the synthesis of nZVI supported on cotton carbon fiber (nZVI/ CF ) to address the agglomeration and oxidation of nZVI. Synergistic adsorption and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation using nZVI/CF for removing levofloxacin (LEV) are reported herein. The nZVI concentration and morphology were conveniently adjusted by soaking cotton fiber in ferric nitrate solutions of various Fe 3+ concentrations. The carbothermal reduction of the cotton fiber at 900 °C contributed to the reduction of Fe 3+ into nZVI. A nZVI/CF-900-0.3 system was obtained through the carbothermal reduction of cotton fiber soaked in 0.3 M ferric nitrate. Favorable adsorption of nZVI/CF-900-0.3 to LEV facilitated LEV degradation under PMS activation. Approximately 93.83% of LEV (C 0 = 20 ppm) was removed within 60 min with 0.2 g/L of the catalyst and 1 mM PMS. It was preferable to use nZVI + CF-900 to activate PMS for degrading LEV, thus confirming the favorable effect of LEV adsorption on further degradation. The nZVI/CF-900-0.3 exhibited excellent long-term stability given that it was able to activate PMS after it was stored for 6 months. ·SO 4 − played an important role in LEV degradation in the presence of PMS.

The pollution problem of livestock manure generated by the rapid development of farming industry is becoming more and more serious, and its conversion into functional materials through a new way is of great practical significance for its resource utilization. For the first time, nano zero-valent iron (nZVI)/biochar composites (Fe-RMC-850) were prepared by carbonizing Fe 3 O 4 -rabbit dung and used to activate PMS for degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results showed that Fe-RMC-850 had high catalytic activity due to its rich pore, high graphitization and defective structure. When the dosage of Fe-RMC-850 and PMS were 0.3 g/L and 0.25 g/L respectively, the degradation rate of SMX could reach 100% within 20 min, and it still showed good catalytic stability after 5 cycles of experiments. The radical quenching, EPR and XPS results showed that radical and nonradical pathways acted synergistically in the degradation of SMX, in which nZVI, Fe 2+ -biochar and pyridinic N were used as the main active sites of the radical pathway. The nonradical pathway was attributed to the generation of C-O and COO by the oxygen-containing functional groups on the biochar surface. Moreover, the inherent P atoms formed P C and CPO 3 /C 2 PO 2 , thereby producing defective structures, while the graphitic carbon layer provided good electron transfer sites. Consequently, this study provides a nZVI-rabbit manure biochar composite PMS catalytic material with high organic pollutant degradation efficiency and offers a new option for the resource utilization of manure sources.

Anaerobic wastewater treatment is a promising technology for refractory pollutant treatment. The nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) assisted anaerobic system could enhance contaminant removal. In this work, we added nZVI into an anaerobic system to investigate the effects on system performances and metabolic mechanism for chloramphenicol (CAP) wastewater treatment. As nZVI concentrations increased from 0 to 1 g/L, the CAP removal efficiency was appreciably improved from 46.5% to 99.2%, while the CH 4 production enhanced more than 20 times. The enhanced CAP removal resulted from the enrichments of dechlorination-related bacteria ( Hyphomicrobium ) and other functional bacteria (e.g., Zoogloea, Syntrophorhabdus ) associated with refractory contaminants degradation. The improved CH 4 production was ascribed to the increases in fermentative-related bacteria ( Smithella and Acetobacteroides ), homoacetogen ( Treponema ), and methanogens . The increased abundances of anaerobic functional genes further verified the mechanism of CH 4 production. Furthermore, the abundances of potential hosts of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were reduced under high nZVI concentration (1 g/L), contributing to ARGs attenuation. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the mechanism in metabolic performance enhancement and ARGs attenuation during nZVI-assisted anaerobic CAP wastewater treatment.

In this study, a polydopamine (PDA) modified attapulgite (ATP) supported nano sized zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite (PDA/ATP-nZVI) was rapidly synthesized under acidic conditions, and employed to alleviate Cr(VI) toxicity from an aqueous solution. Kinetic studies revealed that Cr(VI) adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order model, suggesting chemisorption was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Liu isotherm adsorption model was able to better describe the Cr(VI) adsorption isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity of 134.05 mg/g. The thermodynamic study demonstrated that the adsorption process occurred spontaneously, accompanied by the increase in entropy and endothermic reaction . Low concentrations of coexisting ions had negligible effects on the removal of Cr(VI), while high concentrations of interfering ions were able to facilitate the removal of Cr(VI). Reactive species test revealed that Fe 2+ played a key role in Cr(VI) reduction by PDA/ATP-nZVI. PDA enhanced the elimination of Cr(VI) via donation of electrons to Cr(VI) and acceleration of Fe 3+ transformation to Fe 2+ . Furthermore, PDA was able to effectively inhibit the leaching of iron species and generation of ferric hydroxide sludge . Mechanistic study revealed that 72% of Cr(VI) elimination was attributed to reduction/precipitation, while 28% of Cr(VI) elimination was due to the surface adsorption.

The degradation of organic pollution by sulfur-modified nano zero-valent iron(S-nZVI) combined with advanced oxidation systems has been extensively studied. However, the low utilization of nZVI and low reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield in the system have limited its wide application. Herein, a natural organic acid commonly found in citrus fruits, citric acid (CA), was combined with the conventional S-nZVI@Ps system to enhance the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). The addition of CA increased the NOR removal by about 31% compared with the conventional S-nZVI@Ps system under the same experimental conditions. Among them, the enhanced effect of CA is mainly reflected in its ability to promote the release of Fe 2+ and accelerate the cycling of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ to further improve the utilization of nZVI and the generation of ROS; it also promotes the dissolution of the active substance (FeS) on the surface of S-nZVI to further improve the degradation rate of NOR. More importantly, the chelate of CA and Fe 2+ (CA-Fe 2+ ) had higher reactivity than alone Fe 2+ . Free radical quenching and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments indicated that the main ROS for the degradation of NOR in the CA/S-nZVI@Ps system were SO 4 •- and OH•. CA-bound sulfur-modifying effects on NOR degradation was systematically investigated, and the degradation mechanism of NOR in CA/S-nZVI@Ps system was explored by various techniques. Additionally, the effect of common anions in water matrix on the degradation of NOR in CA/S-nZVI@Ps system and its degradation of various pollutants were also studied. This study provides a new perspective to enhance the degradation of pollutants by S-nZVI combined with advanced oxidation system, which can help to solve the application boundary problem of S-nZVI.

A modified membrane-loaded iron composite PDA/PAN/BC-Fe 0 (PPBN) was successfully prepared using sisal fibre biochar (SF-BC) and poly(dopamine) (PDA) functionalized modified hydrophilic porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes and used to support nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) for the first time. The effect of different reaction conditions and interfering factors on the degradation performance for the removal of tetracycline (TC) was investigated. In addition, the cycling and stability performance of PPBN was assessed. The agglomeration and release of NZVI particles were effectively inhibited, and the reactivity and stability of PPBN were enhanced. The results showed that under the same reaction conditions, the removal efficiency of PPBN for TC could reach 90.16% in 120 min and has increased by 36.16% compared with NZVI. After 6 regeneration cycles, the removal efficiency of TC by PPBN only decreased by 10.22%. The reaction kinetic process conformed to the two-parameter pseudo-first-order kinetic model , and three degradation pathways for TC removal were proposed. The removal mechanism included the synergistic action of physical adsorption , chemical oxidation and reduction, and the key role was played by redox reactions induced by hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) and superoxide radicals (∙O 2 − ). The results of the study provide a simple, efficient and stable material for the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

The pollution of silver ion (Ag( i )) has become a serious environmental threat and hazard to ecosystem and human health. Thus, the nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI)-doped polypyrrole-based carbon nanotube (nZVI/CNT) composites were synthesized by a facile method to remove Ag( i ) from wastewater due to the toxicity and scarcity nature of Ag( i ). In this process, Fe 3+ initiated the self-assembly of polypyrrole tubes in the presence of methyl orange, while it also served as an iron source generated nZVI/CNTs by carbothermal reduction method. The nZVI/CNT composites exhibited a homogeneous tubular structure, and the nZVI formed were uniformly dispersed in the nZVI/CNT composites. The nZVI/CNT composites were used as an adsorbent for the removal of Ag( i ) and showed a higher adsorption capacity compared to nZVI and CNTs, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 522.41 mg g −1 . Ag( i ) was adsorbed on nZVI/CNT composites by ion exchange and chelation, where Ag( i ) was reduced to non-toxic Ag due to the redox reaction among pyrrolic-N, nZVI, and Ag( i ). The adsorption process of Ag( i ) on nZVI/CNT composites was dominated by monolayer adsorption. According to our results, nZVI/CNT composites can be used as economical treatment for wastewater containing Ag( i ).

The widespread occurrence of emerging brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) has become a major environmental concern. In this study, a nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) impregnated organic montmorillonite composite (nZVI-OMT) was successfully prepared and utilized to degrade TBBPS in aqueous solution. The results show that the nZVI-OMT composite was very stable and reusable as the nZVI was well dispersed on the organic montmorillonite. Organic montmorillonite clay layers provide a strong support, facilitate well dispersion of the nZVI chains, and accelerate the overall TBBPS transformation with a degradation rate constant 5.5 times higher than that of the original nZVI. Four major intermediates, including tribromobisphenol S (tri-BBPS), dibromobisphenol S (di-BBPS), bromobisphenol S (BBPS), and bisphenol S (BPS), were detected by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), indicating sequential reductive debromination of TBBPS mediated by nZVI-OMT. The effective elimination of acute ecotoxicity predicted by toxicity analysis also suggests that the debromination process is a safe and viable option for the treatment of TBBPS. Our results have shown for the first time that TBBPS can be rapidly degraded by an nZVI-OMT composite, expanding the potential use of clay-supported nZVI composites as an environmentally friendly material for wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation.

To provide superior substrates and determine the specific species of immobilized nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) system, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane was functionalized by bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) and poly( l -DOPA) (PDOPA) for efficient immobilization of NZVI. The synthesized composites were denoted as PAN/PDA-NZVI (PPN) and PAN/PDOPA-NZVI (PON), respectively. Analyses of XRD, SEM/EDS and XPS show that the aggregation and release of iron nanoparticles had been successfully controlled by improving membrane hydrophilcity and iron-chelating capacity via the graft of functionalized groups (i.e. OH and COOH) of PDA and PDOPA on PAN membrane. Both PPN and PON composites exhibited superior reactivity for Cr(VI) removal (Cr(VI) removal efficiency and reaction rate were 2.21–2.22 and 9.90–10.14 times higher than that of bare NZVI, respectively). The stability and recyclability of PPN and PON composites could be maintained over repeated cycles. Further analyses indicate that PON is more capable for Cr(VI) elimination than PPN due to the proprietary carboxyl of l -DOPA. With the addition of 1,10-phenanthroline, membrane-chelated Fe(II) was determined to be the major species in Cr(VI) removal system, accounting for 56.9% and 53.8% with regard to PPN and PON composites, and Fe 0 was responsible for the reduction of residual Cr(VI). Analyse of reacted composites revealed that Cr(VI) was completely converted into Cr(III), followed by formation of dominant Cr(III)/Fe(III) (oxy)hydroxides and partial desorption from NZVI reactive sites. This study suggested that both synthesized PPN and PON composites have potentials for Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater treatment .
