Polysulfide nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide composite aerogel for efficient solar-driven water purification

Fantao Meng,Yuang Zhang,Shufen Zhang,Benzhi Ju,Bingtao Tang

Along with the environmental pollution, the scarcity of clean water seriously threatens the sustainable development of human society. Recently, the rapid development of solar evaporators has injected new vitality into the field of water purification. However, the industry faces a considerable challenge of achieving comprehensive purification of ions, especially the efficient removal of mercury ions. In this work, we introduce an ideal mercury-removal platform based on facilely and cost-effectively synthesized polysulfide nanoparticles (PSNs). Further development of PSN-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PSN-rGO) aerogel evaporator results in achieving a high evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2  h −1 with energy efficiency of 90.8% under 1 sun. With the merits of interconnected porous structure and adsorption ability, the photothermal aerogel presents overall purification of heavy metal ions from wastewater. During solar desalination, salt ions can be rejected with long-term stability. Compared with traditional water purification technologies, this highly efficient solar evaporator provides a new practical method to utilize clean energy for clean water production.

Bidirectionally catalytic polysulfide conversion by high-conductive metal carbides for lithium-sulfur batteries

Genlin Liu,Cheng Yuan,Pan Zeng,Chen Cheng,Tianran Yan,Kehua Dai,Jing Mao,Liang Zhang

Utilizing catalysts to accelerate the redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) is a promising strategy to alleviate the shuttle effect of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Nevertheless, most of the reported catalysts are only effective for LiPSs reduction, resulting in the devitalization of catalysts over extended cycles as a consequence of the continuous accumulation of Li 2 S passivation layer. The situation gets even worse when employing mono-directional catalyst with poor electron conductivity because the charge transfer for the decomposition of solid Li 2 S is severely hampered. Herein, a high-conductive and dual-directional catalyst Co 3 C decorated on porous nitrogen-doped graphene-like structure and carbon nanotube (Co 3 C@PNGr-CNT) is fabricated as sulfur host, which not only promotes the precipitation of Li 2 S from LiPSs during discharge but also facilitates the decomposition of Li 2 S during subsequent charge, as evidenced by the reduced activation energies for both reduction and oxidation processes. Furthermore, the long-term catalytic stability of Co 3 C is corroborated by the reversible evolution of Co–C bond length over extended cycles as observed from X-ray absorption fine structure results. As a consequence, the fabricated Co 3 C@PNGr-CNT/S cathode delivers a low capacity decay of 0.043% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2C. Even at high sulfur loading (15.6 mg cm −2 ) and low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio (∼8 μL mg −1 ) conditions, the battery still delivers an outstanding areal capacity of 11.05 mAh cm −2 after 40 cycles. This work provides a rational strategy for designing high-efficient bidirectional catalyst with single component for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Addressing adsorption and catalysis of lithium polysulfide via electronic distribution of molybdenum carbide host

Ruixian Duan,Xifei Li,Guiqiang Cao,Qinting Jiang,Jun Li,Liping Chen,Jingjing Wang,Chenyang Hou,Ming Li,Zihao Yang,Xuan Yang,Jiaxuan Zuo,Yukun Xi,Chong Xie,Jing Wang,Wenbin Li,Jiujun Zhang

Heterostructure engineering is considered a crucial strategy to modulate the intrinsic charge transfer behavior of materials, enhance catalytic activity, and optimize sulfur electrochemical processes. However, parsing the role of heterogeneous interface-structure–property relationships in heterostructures is still a key scientific issue to realize the efficient catalytic conversion of polysulfides. Based on this, molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) was successfully partial reduced to molybdenum metal (Mo) via a thermal reduction at high-temperature and the typical Mo-Mo 2 C-based Mott-Schottky heterostructures were simultaneously constructed, which realized the modulation of the electronic structure of Mo 2 C and optimized the conversion process of lithium polysulfides (LPS). Compared with single molybdenum carbide, the modulated molybdenum carbide acts as an electron donor with stronger Mo-S bonding strength as well as higher polysulfide adsorption energy, faster Li 2 S conversion kinetics, and greatly facilitates the adsorption → catalysis process of LPS. As a result, yolk-shell Mo-Mo 2 C heterostructure (C@Mo-Mo 2 C) exhibits excellent cycling performance as a sulfur host, with a discharge specific capacity of 488.41 mAh g −1 for C@Mo-Mo 2 C/S at 4 C and present an excellent high-rate cyclic performance accompanied by capacity decay rate of 0.08 % per cycle after 400 cycles at 2 C. Heterostructure-acting Mo 2 C electron distribution modulation engineering may contributes to the understanding of the structure-interface-property interaction law in heterostructures and further enables the efficient modulation of the chemical behavior of sulfur.

Synergy of single atoms and sulfur vacancies for advanced polysulfide–iodide redox flow battery

Wang Zhigui,Lu Guolong,Wei Tianran,Meng Ge,Cai Haoxiang,Feng Yanhong,Chu Ke,Luo Jun,Hu Guangzhi,Wang Dingsheng,Liu Xijun

Aqueous redox flow batteries (RFBs) incorporating polysulfide/iodide chemistries have received considerable attention due to their safety, high scalability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the sluggish redox kinetics restricted their output energy efficiency and power density. Here we designed a defective MoS 2 nanosheets supported Co single-atom catalyst that accelerated the transformation of S 2− /S x 2− and I − /I 3 − redox couples, hence endow the derived polysulfide–iodide RFB with an initial energy efficiency (EE) of 87.9% and an overpotential of 113 mV with an average EE 80.4% at 20 mA cm −2 and 50% state-of-charge for 50 cycles, and a maximal power density of 95.7 mW cm −2 for an extended cycling life exceeding 850 cycles at 10 mA cm −2 and 10% state-of-charge. In situ experimental and theoretical analyses elucidate that Co single atoms induce the generation of abundant sulfur vacancies in MoS 2 via a phase transition process, which synergistically contributed to the enhanced adsorption of reactants and key reaction intermediates and improved charge transfer, resulting in the enhanced RFB performance.

Bivalent Cobalt as Efficient Catalyst Intercalation Layer Improves Polysulfide Conversion in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Peirong Lin,Yuheng Qi,Daying Guo,Xueyu Wang,Guoyong Fang,Xi'an Chen,Shun Wang

Graphical Mixing valences : The low-valence cobalt has better catalytic activity on polysulfides and improves the performance of the lithium-sulfur battery. Herein, we investigated in detail the effect of metal valences in different cobalt-based organic framework compounds on the kinetics of sulfur reaction in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). On this basis, two organic framework compounds of zeolite-imidazole-based cobalt organic framework compound (Co-ZIF) and tetrakis(4-benzoic acid) porphyrinato-Co III chloride [Co-TBP(III)] with different valences were constructed as the functional intercalation separators of LSBs, and explored the effects of different valences on improving the reaction kinetics of polysulfides and inhibiting the shuttle effect. Experiments and theoretical calculations prove that Co II exhibits the best catalytic activity. This is mainly due to the fact that +2 valence shows a strong adsorption energy for polysulfides and a higher Fermi level compared with +3 valence, thus improving the efficiency of the rapid catalytic conversion of sulfur species. As expected, the discharge specific capacity of Co-ZIF as the catalytic layer of the LSBs reached 772.7 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 5 C. More importantly, the initial specific capacity is 839.6 mAh g −1 at high current 3 C, and after 720 cycles, the attenuation rate of per cycle is only 0.092 %, and the coulombic efficiency remains above 92 %.

Oxygen-Deficient Titanium Dioxide Nanosheets as More Effective Polysulfide Reservoirs for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Han-Chi Wang,Chao-Ying Fan,Yan-Ping Zheng,Xiao-Hua Zhang,Wen-Hao Li,Si-Yu Liu,Hai-Zhu Sun,Jing-Ping Zhang,Ling-Na Sun,Xing-Long Wu

Graphical Oxygen-deficient cathode : A sulfur cathode modified with oxygen-deficient anatase TiO 2 nanosheets (A-TiO 2− x NSs-S cathode) performs better in lithium-sulfur batteries than the A-TiO 2 NSs-S cathode (see figure). Oxygen vacancies on the surface of the A-TiO 2− x NSs provide robustly interactional active sites for lithium polysulfides, which efficiently relieve the shuttle effect, so the A-TiO 2− x NSs-S cathode shows superior electrochemical properties to the A-TiO 2 NSs-S cathode. In this work, oxygen-deficient anatase TiO 2 nanosheets (A-TiO 2− x NSs) are proposed as a substrate to improve the electrochemical properties of sulfur electrodes for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The A-TiO 2− x NSs are prepared by partly reducing pristine TiO 2 nanosheets (A-TiO 2 NSs) in NaBH 4 solution. With some oxygen vacancies on the surface of the TiO 2 nanosheets, A-TiO 2− x NSs not only promote electronic transfer, but also act as more effective polysulfide reservoirs to minimize the dissolution of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) than the A-TiO 2 NSs control. Hence, upon utilization as modifiers for cathodes of Li-S batteries, the A-TiO 2− x NSs-modified sulfur (A-TiO 2− x NSs-S) cathode exhibits a higher reversible specific capacity and greater cycling performance and rate capability than the A-TiO 2 NSs-modified one (A-TiO 2 NSs-S). For example, A-TiO 2− x NSs-S delivers an initial specific capacity of 1277.1 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C and maintains a stable Coulombic efficiency of approximately 99.2 % after the first five cycles; these values are higher than those of 997.3 mAh g −1 and around 96.7 %, respectively, for A-TiO 2 NSs-S. The enhanced electrochemical properties of the A-TiO 2− x NSs-S cathode can be ascribed mainly to the more effective adsorption of dissolvable and diffused LiPSs by the oxygen vacancies. Therefore, utilization of the structure of oxygen vacancies in Li-S batteries demonstrates great prospects for practical application.

Trithiocyanuric acid derived g–C3N4 for anchoring the polysulfide in Li–S batteries application

Ziyang Jia,Hongzhang Zhang,Ying Yu,Yuqing Chen,Jingwang Yan,Xianfeng Li,Huamin Zhang

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have great potential as an electrochemical energy storage system because of the high theoretical energy density and acceptable cost of financial and environment. However, the shuttle effect leads to severe capacity fading and low coulombic efficiency. Here, graphitic carbon nitride (g–C 3 N 4 ) is designed and prepared via a feasible and simple method from trithiocyanuric acid (TTCA) to anchor the polysulfides and suppress the shuttle effect. The obtained g–C 3 N 4 exhibits strong chemical interaction with polysulfides due to its high N–doping of 56.87 at%, which is beneficial to improve the cycling stability of Li–S batteries. Moreover, the novel porous framework and high specific surface area of g–C 3 N 4 also provide fast ion transport and broad reaction interface of sulfur cathode, facilitating high capacity output and superior rate performance of Li–S batteries. As a result, Li–S batteries assembled with g–C 3 N 4 can achieve high discharge capacity of 1200 mAh/g at 0.2 C and over 800 mAh/g is remained after 100 cycles with a coulombic efficiency more than 99.5%. When the C–rate rises to 5 C, the reversible capacity of Li–S batteries can still maintain at 607 mAh/g.

Promoting polysulfide conversion by catalytic of ZnSe nanoparticles for room-temperature sodium-sulfur battery

Jinlin Wang,Can Wu,Wang Zhang,Yang Zhao,Kai Ding,Jie Xiao,Xiaoyuan Zeng,Yingjie Zhang

Although room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT/Na-S) battery has been acclaimed as one of the most promising among the next generation of energy storage technologies, their commercial practicability is still challenged because of the shuttle effect of sodium polysulfides (NaPSs) as well as the slow sulfur (S) cathode redox kinetics. Here, metal selenides (ZnSe) nanoparticles loaded on nitrogen-doped carbon (ZnSe/NC) are elaborately designed and synthesized to serve as the S host for RT/Na-S battery. The ZnSe/NC can accommodate a high S loading and facilitate ion transport. Meanwhile, ZnSe nanoparticles can promote the conversion of long-chain NaPSs into short-chain NaPSs. During this process, they can exert a strong adsorption effect on NaPSs through chemical bonds (Zn S). The superiority of the S@ZnSe/NC electrode is harnessed in the assembly of RT/Na-S battery, presenting remarkable capacity performance and stable cycling (retains 720 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and 400.8 mAh g −1 after 1300 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 .). This work offers a feasible approach to prepare metal selenide catalysts for high-performance RT/Na-S battery.

Bifunctional N, S Dual-Doped Carbon Enabling Fast Polysulfide Redox and Stable Lithium Deposition

Jiajia Wang,Fangting Xie,Heng Lin,Ruiqing Luo,Zhiqi Ma,Duming Wei,Didan Dong,Jingru Liang,Ruiqing Zhang,Wenyu Liang,Yumei Qin,Qingmin Wei,Guangfeng Zeng

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, despite their high theoretical capacity (1675 mAh g −1 ) and low-cost sulfur, suffer from poor cycling stability, and rate performance. This is mainly due to sluggish redox kinetics at the sulfur cathode-particularly during the Li 2 S 2 to Li 2 S conversion. In addition, uneven lithium-ion distribution and random diffusion lead to unsafe issues due to unstable lithium deposition and dendrite growth. In this study, an interlayer composed of N, S dual-doped carbon is designed to reinforcing sulfur redox electrochemistry and promoting uniform Li deposition. The NSC interlayer enhances the electrochemical performances via the formation of N … Li and S B 0 active sites, which accelerate polysulfides conversion and regulate Li deposition. As a result, the Li–S batteries with the NSC interlayer achieve an ultrahigh discharge specific capacity of 1215 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and 617 mAh g −1 at a high current of 5C. In addition, the NSC interlayer enables uniform Li deposition for over 1000 h. The work provides a facile method for designing functional interlayers and opens a new avenue for realizing Li–S batteries with high energy efficiency.

Experimental Study on Polysulfide Rubber-Modified Marine Deck Coatings for Enhanced Rolling Load Resistance

Zhong Luo,Junbo Hu,Yao Li

Featured ApplicationThis study provides a novel formulation and critical technical parameters for the design of marine deck coatings, which can be directly applied to the protection of ship decks under heavy-duty dynamic service conditions such as tracked vehicle rolling and shear.Marine deck coatings suffer from premature failures such as wear thinning, flaking, and brittle cracking under repeated rolling, abrupt stopping/steering, and high shear loads of heavy equipment due to the imbalance of hardness, strength, toughness, and wear resistance. To address this issue, a rolling load-resistant coating system with an epoxy–amine/epoxy–thiol dual-crosslinked network was constructed using liquid polysulfide rubber (Lp-3) as the key crosslinking modifier, and the effect of Lp-3 content (0–2 wt%) on the comprehensive performance of the coating was systematically investigated. The results showed that the coating achieved the optimal synergy of properties at 1 wt% Lp-3 loading: Shore hardness reached 88.7 HD with the pencil hardness maintained at 8H, adhesion strength increased to 7.2 MPa, Taber abrasion loss significantly decreased to 14.8 mg, tensile strength rose from 5.5 MPa to 12.4 MPa, elongation at break nearly doubled, shear strength reached 10.2 MPa, and the failure mode transformed from brittle cleavage to ductile shear. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the terminal thiol groups of Lp-3 underwent a click reaction with epoxy groups, covalently embedding flexible polysulfide segments into the rigid epoxy network and forming Fe–S interfacial chemical bonds to enhance adhesion. The microphase separation, chain relaxation, and energy dissipation mechanisms effectively blunted crack propagation and alleviated stress concentration, while maintaining sufficient surface hardness and the continuity of the load-bearing skeleton. This work realizes the synergistic optimization of high strength, high toughness, strong adhesion, and excellent wear resistance for marine deck coatings and provides a new strategy and critical technical parameters for the design of functional coatings under heavy-duty dynamic service environments.

Synergistic polysulfide regulation by CeO2/N-doped graphene composites for durable lithium–sulfur batteries

Zhengguo Jiao,Yi E,Wanwei Fu,Xinyi Ran,Tao Mei,Fengshuai Zhu,Xianbao Wang

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising next-generation energy storage systems due to their high theoretical capacity and low cost, but they suffer from the insulating nature of sulfur, significant volume change, and the polysulfide shuttle effect. To address these challenges, we designed and synthesized a CeO 2 -decorated N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO/CeO 2 ) composite as a sulfur host. The N-rGO framework ensures high electrical conductivity and offers abundant active sites for sulfur species, while the CeO 2 nanoparticles, with their Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox couple, effectively immobilize polysulfides and catalyze their conversion. This unique structure couples a highly conductive N-rGO network with uniformly dispersed nanoparticles, resulting in a synergistic system that integrates physical confinement, strong chemisorption, and efficient electrocatalysis. N-rGO/CeO 2 /S cathode delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 1330.9 mAh g −1  at 0.1C and maintains 730.0 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2C. Remarkably, it exhibits outstanding long-term cyclability, retaining capacities of 432.4 and 327.0 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1 C and 3 C, respectively, corresponding to an ultralow capacity decay rate of only 0.024% per cycle at 1 C. This work highlights the effectiveness of the N-rGO/CeO 2 composite as a multifunctional host for high-performance Li–S batteries.

Trimetallic ZnCoNi-NC@MWCNT Separator with Enhanced Polysulfide Trapping for Stable Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Yulong Wei,Shaojie Zhang,Jiahui Lyu,Weihao Zeng,Haoyue Ma,Xianyang Zhang,Cheng Chen,Yinyu Xiang,Shichun Mu,Zongkui Kou

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems, yet their practical implementation is severely hindered by the shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and sluggish multistep sulfur redox kinetics. Here, we design a ZnCoNi zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZnCoNi-ZIF) that is in situ grown on acid-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and subsequently carbonized to afford an N-doped carbon/MWCNT composite embedded with Zn–Co–Ni nanoparticles (denoted as ZnCoNi-NC@MWCNT). This composite is employed as a functional coating on commercial polypropylene separators. The cooperative effect of trimetallic active sites and the conductive carbon matrix endows the separator with polar M-Nx and pyridinic N sites, a high-surface-area mesoporous architecture, and continuous electron pathways, enabling physical confinement, chemical anchoring, and electrocatalytic conversion of LiPSs. Specifically, uniformly distributed Zn–Co–Ni nanoparticles act as electrocatalytic centers to accelerate the reversible multistep sulfur transformation, while the synergistic interplay among these components mitigates the shuttle effect and reinforces the electrode–electrolyte interface stability. Consequently, Li–S cell with this modified separator delivers 894 mAh g–1 at 5.2 mg cm–2 sulfur loading and 0.2 C, and maintains stable cycling over 1908 cycles at 2.2 mg cm–2 and 0.5C with a low capacity decay of ≈0.041% per cycle and Coulombic efficiency approaching 100%. This work presents a trimetallic-catalyst-based separator engineering strategy for high-performance, long-life Li–S batteries.
