Phosphates and trehalose are widely accepted additives in animal muscle products. In this study, the effects of pre-soaking with sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and trehalose under vacuum permeation (VP) conditions on the physicochemical properties of shrimp muscle were evaluated over 120 d of frozen storage. The results indicate the STPP/trehalose-VP treatments significantly reduced the thawing loss and prevented changes in the texture, myofibrillar protein (MP) content, and Ca2+-ATPase activity of shrimp muscle during frozen storage compared with results of control and individual STPP or trehalose soaking treatments. The histological structure analysis revealed the permeated STPP/trehalose distinctly inhibited the dissociation of muscle fibers and reduced physical damage to connective tissues during storage. Furthermore, analysis of the thermal properties indicated STPP/trehalose treatment increased the Tg’ values of shrimp muscle tissues, likely by restricting the mobility of water molecules in muscle tissues and embedding proteins in the glassy matrix. Thus, the physical destruction caused by ice crystal growth was greatly reduced, due to the absence of water molecules around muscle proteins during frozen storage. Accordingly, the combined STPP/trehalose-VP treatment significantly enhanced the stability of frozen shrimp, and the results support the application of traditional cryoprotective additives. The treated shrimp can be stored at comparatively higher temperatures with limited physicochemical reactions during frozen storage.

A PAM/AG/TR/CNTs composite hydrogel was fabricated for strain and pressure sensors. • The addition of trehalose enhances frost resistance of the composite hydrogel. • The hydrogel demonstrates flexibility, strong adhesion, and good biocompatibility. • The hydrogel sensors are capable of monitoring diverse physiological signals. Hydrogel sensors hold great potential for flexible wearable devices. However, their practical application in complex environments is limited by several shortcomings, such as the inability to detect tensile and compressive stimuli with high accuracy, insufficient frost resistance, and a lack of self-adhesiveness. Herein, we incorporated trehalose into a dual-network hydrogel system composed of polyacrylamide, agarose, and carbon nanotubes through a simple one-pot method to produce a novel composite hydrogel. The addition of trehalose significantly enhances both the mechanical properties and frost resistance of the composite hydrogel to deliver ultrahigh flexibility, superior stretchability and compressibility, strong adhesion, excellent biocompatibility, and reliable frost resistance. Sensors assembled from the composite hydrogel provide high sensitivity with antifreeze performance to temperatures as low as −30 °C. The optimized strain sensor delivers a gauge factor of 9.84 within the 60–90% strain range, a low detection limit (0.1%), and a broad sensing range (0.1–90%). The optimized pressure sensor exhibits high sensitivity (3.46 kPa −1 in the 1–3 kPa region), a wide detection range (39.4 Pa to 100 kPa), fast response (70 ms), and reproducible performance over 1000 cycles. In practical applications, the sensors successfully detect diverse physiological signals, ranging from arterial pulse pressure to heavy foot-treading pressure. Further integration with the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) machine-learning algorithm results in exceptional prediction accuracy of gesture recognition, achieving 99.44%. All these features testify to promising prospects in motion assistance, health monitoring, and wearable electronics with high sensitivity and reliability.

Flexible strain sensors and flexible supercapacitors have generated a lot of interest because of their great potential to be used in flexible electronic equipment. Ionic hydrogels are ideal for the preparation of strain sensors and supercapacitor electrolytes, so the design of a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel is the key to obtain both high-performance strain sensors and flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors. During our work, trehalose and LiCl were added concurrently to the P(AM-co-AA) polymer network to prepare a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel combining ultra stretchability (elongation at break up to 4529%), high ionic conductivity, self-adhesive and freeze-resistant moisturizing properties. The ionic conductive hydrogel was encapsulated into a strain sensor, which has excellent sensing performance, achieving a great detection range (0–4200%) and high sensitivity (GF = 3.59 in the strain range of 2200–4200%). The strain sensor was applied to human motion detection, demonstrating precise detection behavior for joint flexion and muscle movement. The ionic conductive hydrogel was assembled with flexible fabric electrodes loaded with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and MXene to form a sandwich-type supercapacitor. The supercapacitor exhibited high areal capacitance (148.2 mF/cm 2 ), excellent cycling performance, outstanding stability and good low temperature resistance.

Among various biomaterials, hydrogels are considered as the most attractive tissue engineering material due to their resemblances to extracellular matrix. However, due to the poor mechanical properties, poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels are restricted to be applied in load-bearing tissue repair and regeneration. In this work, we designed a series of porous biocompatible composite hydrogels with tough mechanical properties for bone tissue engineering, consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol), trehalose and nano-clay. These novelty hydrogels were prepared by a facile one-pot method. Compositions, microscopic structures, and mechanical properties of hydrogels were investigated in detail. The maximum compressive strength, compressive modulus, tensile strength, elastic modulus, and toughness of hydrogels attained about 2.71 MPa, 0.163 MPa, 0.741 MPa, 0.084 MPa, and 0.94 MJ/m 3 , respectively. These as-prepared hydrogels exhibited the excellent mechanical properties, which were ascribed to the hydrogen bond interactions between molecules and nano-enhancement effect of the nano-clay. Meanwhile, as-prepared hydrogels also exhibited a three-dimensional and interconnected porous microstructure, which facilitated the transport of nutrients to promote cells growth. In addition, the mechanical properties and microscopic structures of hydrogels could be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of trehalose and nano-clay. In vitro cell experiments demonstrated that the hydrogels had good biocompatibility. And hydrogels possessed the excellent ability to induce MC3T3-E1 cells osteogenesis to accelerate bone defects repair. Above illustrated results demonstrated that the potential applications of the hydrogels used as bone tissue engineering materials. Therefore, we anticipated this kind of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based composite hydrogel could develop a new strategy for bone tissue repair

Trehalose-6-phosphate (T6P) is an important signaling metabolite that is involved in many physiological processes. However, the mechanism of the biological functions of T6P is not fully understood. Quantification of T6P in plants will be beneficial to elucidate the mechanism. However, it is still a challenge to chromatographically separate and sensitively detect T6P and related sugar phosphates. In the current study, we developed a method for effective separation and sensitive detection of glucose-1-phosphate (G1P), glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), sucrose-6-phosphate (S6P) and T6P in plant tissues by chemical derivatization combined with hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ChD-HILIC-MS/MS). With this method, two pairs of isomers (G1P/G6P and S6P/T6P) could be well separated on a HILIC column and sensitively detected by MS with limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 ng mL −1 . The developed method was successfully applied to the detection of endogenous G1P, G6P, S6P and T6P in small amounts of plant tissues, such as 1 mg fresh weight of Oryza sativa shoot.
