1H-benzotriazole (BTri) and 5-tolyltriazole (5-TTri) are emerging pollutants; the development of novel materials for their efficient adsorption and removal is thus of great significance in environmental sciences. Here, we report the application of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a novel adsorbent for fast removal of BTri and 5-TTri in aqueous solution in view of adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics, desorption, and adsorbent regeneration. The adsorption of BTri and 5-TTri on ZIF-8 was very fast, and most of BTri and 5-TTri were adsorbed in the first 2 min. The adsorption for BTri and 5-TTri follows a pseudo-second-order kinetics and fits the Langmuir adsorption model with the adsorption capacity of 298.5 and 396.8 mg g–1 for BTri and 5-TTri at 30 °C, respectively. The adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process controlled by positive entropy change. No remarkable effects of pH, ionic strength, and dissolved organic matter on the adsorption of BTri and 5-TTri on ZIF-8 were observed. The used ZIF-8 could be regenerated effectively and recycled at least three times without significant loss of adsorption capacity. In addition, ZIF-8 provided much larger adsorption capacity and faster adsorption kinetics than activated carbon and ZIF-7. The hydrophobic and π–π interaction between the aromatic rings of the BTri and 5-TTri and the aromatic imizole rings of the ZIF-8, and the coordination of the nitrogen atoms in BTri and 5-TTri molecules to the Zn2+ ions in the ZIF-8 framework was responsible for the efficient adsorption. The fast adsorption kinetics, large adsorption capacity, excellent reusability as well as the pH, ionic strength, and dissolved organic matter insensitive adsorption create potential for ZIF-8 to be effective at removing benzotriazoles from aqueous solution.

Ethanediamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 particles (ZIF-8-NH 2 ) is synthesized and incorporated in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to fabricate novel PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. The PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 MMMs exhibit enhanced membrane homogeneity and separation performance because of the higher hydrophilicity and restricted agglomeration of the particles, as compared to corresponding MMMs loaded with unmodified particles. The effect of ZIF-8-NH 2 loading in the MMMs is studied and the MMM with a 7.5 wt % ZIF-8-NH 2 loading shows the best pervaporation performance for ethanol dehydration at 40°C. Various characterization techniques (Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, contact angle, sorption test, etc.) are used to investigate the MMMs loaded with ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-NH 2 particles. The impact of operation conditions on pervaporation performance is also performed. The performance benchmarking shows that the MMMs have superior separation factors and comparable flux to most other PVA hybrid membranes. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 62: 1728–1739, 2016

In recent years, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has received tremendous attention due to its hydrophobic inner channels and good compatibility with the polymer as an inorganic filler for preparation of the mixed matrix membrane (MMM). In this study, ZIF-8 particles were synthesized and incorporated into Ploy (ether block amide) matrix (PEBA-2533) to fabricate a MMM for the enhancement of phenol permselective pervaporation. The structure and morphology of ZIF-8 particle and the obtained MMMs were characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, contact angle and BET. It is found that the hydrophobicity of the membrane was enhanced by the incorporation of hydrophobic ZIF-8, and the obtained MMM withstand the extreme operation conditions of pervaporation. The effects of particle loading amount, feed concentration and temperature on the separation performance of ZIF-8 incorporated MMMs were investigated in details. Compared with the pure PEBA-2533 membrane, the permeate flux of ZIF-8 incorporated PEBA-2533 MMM with a 10 wt% loading amount was significantly increased from 846 g m −2 h −1 to 1310 g m −2 h −1 , while the separation factor increased from 39 to 53 at 70 °C with 8000 ppm feed phenol concentration. The enhancement of the pervaporation performance could be mainly attributed to the preferential highly permeable regions of the bimodal membrane structure for phenol molecules, which was consisted of ZIF-8 particles. Finally, both of the excellent overall membrane pervaporation performance and the long-term revealed that such a ZIF-8 incorporated MMM has a great potential in separation and recovery of phenol from its aqueous solution for a practical process.

This work demonstrated the potential of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a host for the co-encapsulation of multiple fluorescent cargos to fabricate fluorescent composites for ratiometric sensing. The one-pot self-assembly of 2-methylimidazole, zinc nitrate, 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid (AnC), and polystyrene sphere doped with europium chelate (EuPS) in methanol solution can lead to the formation of dual-emissive EuPS@AnC/ZIF-8 with excellent fluorescent activity. Based on the distinct fluorescent responses of Eu3+ and AnC to singlet oxygen (1O2), EuPS@AnC/ZIF-8 can be developed as a ratiometric sensor for 1O2 detection. In this ratiometric sensor, Eu3+ fluorescence was employed as a reference signal for providing built-in correction to avoid environmental effects, while AnC fluorescence served as a response signal to detect 1O2 because of its turn-off behavior upon reacting with 1O2. Benefiting from the confinement effect of the ZIF-8 host, the presented sensor showed high sensitivity toward 1O2 with a detection limit of 43 nM and excellent selectivity over other reactive oxygen species. More attractively, the target responsive fluorescent color change of EuPS@AnC/ZIF-8 allowed 1O2 to be easily identified by the naked eye under a UV lamp. We hope that this study will provide a new insight into the design and application of multifunctional composites based on metal–organic frameworks.

The separation of CO2/CH4 is reported in detail by using zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) membrane which was prepared on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane modified Al2O3 tube through microwave heating synthesis. Attributed to the preferential adsorption affinity of CO2 over CH4 and a narrow pore window of 0.34 nm, the ZIF-8 membrane shows high separation performances for the separation of CO2/CH4 mixtures. For the separation of equimolar CO2/CH4 mixture at 100°C and 2 bar feed (1 bar permeate) pressure, a CO2 permeance of 1.02 × 10−8 mol/m2· s· Pa and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 6.8 are obtained, which is promising for CO2 separation.

Background and objective Daphnetin (7, 8-dihydroxycoumarin), a natural coumarin compound, is known to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatrory effects. However, the underlying mechanisms of its anti-apoptotic and antidiabetic effects yet not been examined. Therefore, the present work studied the anti-apoptotic and anti-diabetic effects of daphnetin by in vitro experiments. Methods The rat insulinoma (INS-1) cells were pre-treated with daphnetin at different concentrations (1, 10, 20 and 40 µM) for 24 h followed by exposition to streptozotocin (STZ) (3 mM) for 12 h. Effects of daphnetin and STZ on INS-1 cells were determined by MTT assay, glucose stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) assay, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant status (SOD, CAT, GPx, and GST) Apoptosis staining (DAPI, Hoechst 33342, AO/EB and ROS) was performed by fluorescence microscopy, and Bcl-2, Bax and NF-κB protein expression was detected by Western blotting. Results MTT assay indicated that the viability of INS-1 cells was significantly reduced with exposure to STZ for 12 h as compared to control cells, while pre-treated with daphnetin for 24 h resulted in a significant improvement of cell viability. The effects daphnetin treatment in INS-1 cells on insulin secretion was tested and results showed that the pre-treatment of daphnetin could improve GSIS. Further, daphnetin pre-treatment significantly reduced the levels of lipid peroxidation markers and also improved antioxidant enzymes’ activities in STZ-induced INS-1 cells. Western blotting assay revealed that daphnetin could suppress apoptosis through up-regulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein expression and the down-regulation of pro-apoptotic Bax and nuclear factor NF-κB protein levels. Conclusion The results showed that daphnetin might be used in treating diabetes due to its insulin stimulating property and subsequent regulation of apoptotic pathway.

Zeolitic imidazolate framworks-8 (ZIF-8) and two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) are frequently studied for their outstanding properties and wide applications. Therefore, integrating these two components into hybrid nanocomposites is conceivable to build a hybrid nanomaterial with enhanced or even new properties. In this paper, a novel hybrid nanocomposite of ZIF-8 with few-layer two-dimensional (FL-BP) (ZIF-8/BP) is prepared for the first time. The obtained ZIF-8/BP hybrid composites are composed of ZIF-8 nanoparticles uniformly distributed over the whole BP nanosheets. The in situ growth of ZIF-8 is attributed to FL-BP functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), whose pyrrolidone rings (CO) enhance the affinity between Zn ions and FL-BP, and in turn facilitate ZIF-8 in situ growth on the surface of BP. Furthermore, the obtained ZIF-8/BP hybrid nanocomposites demonstrate enhanced photocatalytic performance, for the highly efficient charge separation and transfer during photocatalytic reactions.

8-Methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) is a naturally occurring furanocoumarin with various biological activities. However, there is little information on the binding mechanism of 8-MOP with trypsin. Here, the interaction between 8-MOP and trypsin in vitro was determined by multi-spectroscopic methods combined with the multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR–ALS) chemometrics approach. An expanded UV–vis spectral data matrix was analysed by MCR–ALS, the concentration profiles and pure spectra for the three reaction species (trypsin, 8-MOP and 8-MOP–trypsin) were obtained to monitor the interaction between 8-MOP and trypsin. The fluorescence data suggested that a static type of quenching mechanism occurred in the binding of 8-MOP to trypsin. Hydrophobic interaction dominated the formation of the 8-MOP–trypsin complex on account of the positive enthalpy and entropy changes, and trypsin had one high affinity binding site for 8-MOP with a binding constant of 3.81 × 10 4 L mol − 1 at 298 K. Analysis of three dimensional fluorescence , UV–vis absorption and circular dichroism spectra indicated that the addition of 8-MOP induced the rearrangement of the polypeptides carbonyl hydrogen-bonding network and the conformational changes in trypsin. The molecular docking predicted that 8-MOP interacted with the catalytic residues His57, Asp102 and Ser195 in trypsin. The binding patterns and trypsin conformational changes may result in the inhibition of trypsin activity. This study has provided insights into the binding mechanism of 8-MOP with trypsin.

Thermal techniques (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the vacuum stability test (VST)), according to STANAG 4147, and non-thermal techniques (Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry (XRD)) were used to examine compatibility issues for 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) with a selection of insensitive explosives, including nitroguanidine (NQ), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyridine-1-oxide (ANPyO), 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TATB), 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) and 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105). DSC measurements showed that ANPyO, TATB, NTO and LLM-105 were compatible with CL-20. The compatibility of CL-20/NQ, CL-20/TNT, CL-20/ANPyO, CL-20/TATB, CL-20/NTO and CL-20/LLM-105 mixtures was further explored using the VST, which revealed that all the selected insensitive explosives were compatible with CL-20. Possible chemical interactions were suspected for CL-20/TATB from the FTIR results and for CL-20/NTO from XRD analysis. In summary, ANPyO and LLM-105 demonstrated the optimal compatibility with CL-20.

Bacterial infections pose a significant threat to global public health, and the presence of bacterial biofilms complicates the treatment of these infections. Therefore, the development of materials with both antibacterial and antibiofilm properties is crucial. In this study, we designed a composite material that combines chemical and photothermal antibacterial functions using a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) and protocatechuic acid (PCA). PCA-ZIF was synthesized by immersing ZIF-8 in a PCA solution, followed by surface encapsulation with polydopamine (PDA) through dopamine polymerization to enhance its photothermal therapy potential. This process yielded PCA-ZIF@PDA, which can generate localized hyperthermia and gradually release PCA to achieve multimodal antibacterial activity. The structure of the composite was characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET, and its photothermal performance under 808 nm laser irradiation, drug release profile, and in vitro antibacterial efficacy were also evaluated. The results indicated that the immersion of PCA did not alter the crystal structure of ZIF-8, however, the polydopamine (PDA) coating significantly reduced its crystallinity. The PCA loading capacities were measured at 253.7 mg⋅g −1 for PCA-ZIF and 209.2 mg⋅g −1 for PCA-ZIF@PDA. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the 1 mg⋅mL −1 sample under 808 nm irradiation was found to be 61.4 %. Under near-infrared irradiation and acidic conditions (pH 5.0), the cumulative drug release from PCA-ZIF@PDA reached 91 % after 12 h. Antibacterial experiments demonstrated that PCA-ZIF@PDA effectively killed E. coli and S. aureus , inhibited their growth, and significantly prevented biofilm formation.

Compared to pure polymer membranes and inorganic membranes, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) loaded with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit higher permeability and selectivity. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) is widely regarded as the most promising candidate for separation membrane materials due to its precise molecular sieving properties. However, there is an urgent need for scalable fabrication methods to produce flexible and sustainable MOF MMMs, which is largely unmet. Here, we report a non-solvent induced phase separation-spin coating (NIPS-SC) strategy for the preparation of highly permeable MOF MMMs. A porous support layer is formed by non-solvent induced phase separation of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and ZIF-8 are then coated on the PVDF support layer to synthesize the symbiotic and continuous MMM membrane. The synthesized membrane shows excellent separation performance for organic dye and heavy metal ions, as well as significant stability. The water permeate flux of the membrane is 342 L m –2 h −1 bar −1 . The micron-scale in the support layer facilitates rapid water permeation, while the porous ZIF-8 provides enhanced solute rejection selectivity. This strategy paves the way for the development of high-performance membranes for water purification.

The strongly alkaline sodium aluminate solution generated from high-sulfur bauxites during their refinement through the Bayer process contains sulfur, mainly in the form of thiosulfate (S 2 O 3 2− ) ions, which affects the quality of the target product (alumina). Consequently, the large-scale use of high-sulfur bauxites is severely limited, and methods of desulfurizing sodium aluminate solutions are urgently needed. To address this need, we herein prepared metal–organic framework (ZIF-8)-supported Co-doped TiO 2 (Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8) using a sol–gel method and low-temperature calcination under N 2 and examined the ability of this composite to photocatalyze the oxidative degradation of thiosulfate ions in sodium aluminate solutions. Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 retained the large specific surface area and rich porosity of ZIF-8, which reduced the agglomeration of TiO 2 particles on the surface. The loading of Co-TiO 2 endowed Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 with a mesoporous structure and thus increased its adsorption capacity. Compared with ZIF-8, Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 featured new functional groups, and the formation of Zn–C and N–Ti–O bonds confirmed the successful integration of Co-TiO 2 with the ZIF-8 carrier. Consequently, the thiosulfate removal rates by Co-TiO 2 @ZIF-8 were 42 % and 26 % higher than those observed for the blank sample and pure TiO 2 (light source = xenon arc lamp, oxidant = O 3 , reaction time = 60 min), respectively. This high performance is primarily due to Co doping, which enhanced the efficiency of visible light utilization, and the photogenerated electron–hole pairs on the photocatalyst surface and hydroxyl radicals formed by the interaction of holes with the solution-phase OH − ions.
