Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is widely used in automotive applications but suffers from poor fire safety. Conventional flame retardants can improve flame resistance only at high loadings, which usually cause serious deterioration of mechanical properties. To overcome this trade-off, multifunctional organic–inorganic hybrid particles (h-BN@TAMAA) were engineered from h-BN through interfacial regulation to provide synergistic effects. With h-BN@TAMAA, the loading of conventional flame retardants was reduced by 37.5% while maintaining a UL-94 V-0 rating. Benefiting from the combined effects of increased rubber content and the reactive structure of h-BN@TAMAA, the composites achieved a tensile strength of 14.2 MPa and an elongation at break of 418%, corresponding to only 9.5% and 10.1% losses, respectively, relative to the blank sample. Cone calorimetry further revealed improved fire safety, with peak heat release rate, total heat release, and carbon monoxide production rate reduced by 14.9%, 19.8%, and 80.0%, respectively, compared with the reference material. This work provides a practical strategy for simultaneously enhancing flame retardancy and mechanical integrity in EPDM.

As a hydrophilic polymer material with unique physicochemical properties and biomimetic characteristics, hydrogel has attracted wide attention in the fields of chemistry, materials science, biomedicine, and engineering. However, hydrogel sensors produce bacteria during repeated use, increasing the risk of skin infections and decreasing the lifespan of hydrogel sensors. Thus, a conductive antimicrobial hydrogel sensor based on a xanthan gum-polyvinyl alcohol dual network structure was produced using freeze–thaw method. Polyhexamethylene biguanide was introduced to endow the hydrogel with significant antibacterial activity, showing inhibition zone diameters of 2.1 ± 0.2 mm and 3.3 ± 0.1 mm against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis , respectively, along with excellent antibacterial stability. Meanwhile, the hydrogel possesses excellent toughness and elasticity with a maximum fracture strength of 327 kPa and a strain at break of 375%, and it can be molded into various three-dimensional shapes. In addition, hydrogels can monitor the movements of various joints in the human body in real time and also detect weak electromyography signals with a high sensitivity factor of 3.37 and millisecond-level response/recovery speed. Therefore, the biocompatibility and sensitivity of hydrogels provide a new material basis for wearable sensors and artificial skin diagnostics.

The limited compatibility between lignin and hydrophilic polysaccharide–polymer matrices restricts the development of high-performance bio-based packaging films. Here, we propose a green strategy that incorporates solvent-fractionated alkaline lignin (F-AL) into konjac glucomannan (KGM)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films through citric acid (CA)-mediated ester crosslinking. Fractionation using acetone/water enriched phenolic hydroxyl groups and reduced molecular weight, thereby enhancing lignin reactivity toward CA and improving its dispersion in the PVA/KGM matrix. FTIR and SEM analyses confirmed the formation of a denser crosslinked network and markedly improved interfacial compatibility. As a result, the optimized PKFAL6 film exhibited high tensile strength (40.27 MPa), a 54.8% reduction in water vapor permeability, and a low swelling ratio (112.47%). The enriched phenolic structure of F-AL imparted strong antioxidant activity (up to 85.6% DPPH scavenging) and excellent UV-blocking ability (91.4% UVB; 58.9% UVA). Soil-burial tests revealed a two-stage degradation behavior, with slower early-stage mass loss due to antimicrobial effects and accelerated degradation after network cleavage. These results demonstrate that lignin fractionation is an effective strategy for creating sustainable films with enhanced soil degradation performance and improved functional properties for active packaging.

Fireproof glass, a critical material for fire protection, has attracted sustained research interest to enhance its fire resistance and durability. A ternary interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel composed of polyacrylamide (PAM), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was constructed and applied to grouting fireproof glass. The fire resistance of fireproof glass was investigated by various analytical methods. Results show that the ternary IPN hydrogel endows the fireproof glass with high fire resistance and optical transparency. When the mass ratio of acrylamide, PEG, and PVA is 5: 0.5: 0.5 in the hydrogel, the obtained fireproof glass named L3 demonstrates a light transmittance exceeding 80%, a residual weight of 37.6% at 800°C, and an equilibrium backside temperature of 130.6°C at 3600 s. In the accelerated aging test, L3 sample exhibits a favorable anti-aging performance after 7 aging cycles, which retains 94.9% and 79.9% of its original light transmission and heat insulation performance. The enhanced anti-aging properties of the fireproof glass can be attributed to the improvement of hydrolysis and ultraviolet resistance conferred by the ternary IPN structure. This research provides valuable insights for enhancing the fire resistance and anti-aging properties of grouting fireproof glass.

Electrospun nanofibers possess exceptional structural characteristics, including well-interconnected channels, nanoscale pore size, and high porosity, making them promising candidates for diverse applications across multiple fields. Structural design has emerged as a critical strategy for further enhancing the performance of these fiber materials. However, the inherent complexity of the electrohydrodynamic jet instability and solvent evaporation during electrospinning presents a significant challenge for rational fiber structure design. In this study, direct forming techniques are proposed to design the structures of fiber materials in three dimensions, encompassing the jet, fiber, and fiber assembly. Through regulating the spinning parameters, solvent systems, and electric field conditions, we successfully construct a garland-like jet structure, wave-like pure polymeric fiber morphology, and aligned fiber assembly. This work develops facile yet effective methods for the multi-dimensional structural design of electrospun nanofibers, paving the way for the production of high-performance and multifunctional fiber materials.

Utilizing carbon dioxide as a feedstock for polymer synthesis accords with the global carbon neutrality target and lessens petroleum resource dependence. The synthesis of organic polymers from CO 2 , especially polycarbonate polyols for high-performance polyurethanes, has garnered extensive industrial and academic attention. Herein, CO 2 -based poly(ethylene carbonate) diols (PECD) were first used to synthesize manually brushable polyurea (PUU). Results confirm PECD can prepare PUU with excellent mechanical properties and aging resistance. At an isocyanate index ( R = 1.2), PECD-PUU showed a tensile strength of 32 ± 2 MPa and an elongation at break of 615% ± 15%. After 168 h of UV aging (280–315 nm), it retained 69% initial transmittance, 52.3% tensile strength and a low yellow index ( YI = 20.71%). By contrast, traditional based PUU (PBA-PUU and PPG-PUU) exhibited poor UV resistance: PBA-PUU only retained 6.2% tensile strength after 168 h UV aging, and PPG-PUU degraded completely within 24 h. Endowed with CO 2 utilization, excellent performance and brushability, PECD-PUU is a promising green weather-resistant coating for architecture, automobile and aerospace fields.

The advancement of flexible electronics demands dielectric materials beyond single-mechanism regulation. This study introduces a synergistic dual-regulation strategy combining photo-crosslinking and fluorine effects to concurrently suppress relaxation and conduction losses. We fabricated cross-linked hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA)/β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ternary composite films via ultraviolet (UV)-induced in situ polymerization. Fluorine incorporation effectively inhibited relaxation loss and leakage current, reducing its density from 6.19 × 10 −6 μC/cm 3 (1 wt% β-CD/PVDF) to 1.79 × 10 −6 μC/cm 3 (30 wt% HFMA composite), thereby mitigating thermal/electrical breakdown risks. Simultaneously, the photo-crosslinked structure restricted chain segment mobility, enhancing breakdown strength from 364.35 MV/m (PVDF) to 545.16 MV/m. The synergistic effect significantly improved energy storage performance, achieving a maximum energy density of 7.21 J/cm 3 at 20 wt% HFMA loading—156% of the value for PVDF. This work provides a new design pathway for high-performance flexible polymer dielectrics featuring low loss, high breakdown strength, and superior energy storage density.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from aquatic environments is increasingly critical for alleviating eutrophication and mitigating the looming crisis of phosphate resource depletion. In this study, a dolomite-soybean dregs biochar composite (9ODBC-900) was successfully synthesized and achieved efficient phosphate adsorption from water and subsequently used as a slow-release fertilizer. The experimental results showed that the biochar composite could efficiently adsorb phosphorus in water, with a high adsorption capacity of 192.02 mg/g. The primary mechanism of adsorption was attributed to the precipitation of Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ ions, with additional contributions from surface complexation and electrostatic interactions. Additionally, the phosphorus-enriched biochar composite demonstrated considerable promise as a slow-release fertilizer, releasing 6.2 mg/g of phosphorus over a standard 14-day dissolution period. In trials involving hydroponic wheat cultivation, compared with the control group, the application of phosphorus-containing biochar composite material in the experimental group was beneficial to the accumulation of aboveground biomass of wheat, which confirmed its potential as a fertilizer. Consequently, this biochar composite offers a cost-efficient approach to phosphorus recycling, providing a sustainable method for resource recovery and reuse.

To address the adhesion problem of curcumin-containing zein fibers, sandwich-structured zein/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes with a curcumin-functionalized core layer were fabricated via sequential electrospinning (outer-core-outer). The core layer exhibited flattened and adhesive fibers, whereas encapsulation within protective outer layers yielded cylindrical, non-adhesive fibers with tunable diameters (0.43–1.0 μm). The sandwich membranes exhibited enhanced mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 4.67 MPa) and stable hydrophobicity. Filtration tests demonstrated > 95% efficiency for 0.3 μm particles and > 97% for particles ≥ 0.5 μm, with pressure drop values ranging from 7.03 to 7.56 mbar. Post-filtration imaging revealed that curcumin-containing membranes displayed dispersed particle deposition on individual fibers, while the curcumin-free outer layer showed extensive particle aggregation, indicating curcumin-induced particle anchoring. FTIR analysis confirmed curcumin-mediated hydrogen bonding and increased β-sheet content. The sandwich design resolves core layer adhesion while preserving filtration functionality, offering a sustainable strategy for bio-based air filtration materials.

Building energy conservation is a critical component of the global sustainable energy transition. Floor radiant heating systems are widely valued for their thermal comfort and efficiency. In this study, microencapsulated phase-change materials (MicroPCMs) are incorporated into wood–plastic composites (WPCs) to develop panels capable of enhanced heat storage and improved thermal conduction. MicroPCMs with the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) shells and n -octadecane cores are synthesized via emulsion polymerization. The microstructure, thermal behavior, and mechanical performance of the composites are characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. MicroPCMs with a 1:1 core–shell mass ratio show a melting enthalpy of 118.31 J g −1 , a crystallization enthalpy of 121.31 J g −1 , and an initial thermal decomposition temperature of 150°C. When 15 wt% MicroPCMs are added to WPCs, the utilization rate of MicroPCMs reaches 65.47%, which shows latent heat storage capability. The thermal conductivity of the composite increases by more than 70%, which enhances heat transfer performance. The mechanical strength decreases slightly but still meets the basic needs for flooring. The MicroPCM/WPC composite, with its thermal storage and heat transfer properties, provides an innovative solution for achieving low-energy, high-comfort floor heating systems with strong practical potential.

Flame-retardant polycarbonates (PCs) are in demand for a diversity of applications. However, it remains challenging to achieve both high transparency and flame retardancy in thin-walled PC without compromising its overall performance. In this study, a sulfonate- and phosphoramide-containing flame retardant (KSPH) was synthesized and applied to PC. The results demonstrate that a minimal addition of KSPH can impart excellent flame-retardant properties to PC. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) increased to 33.3%, and UL 94 V-0 rating was achieved with only 0.075 wt% KSPH in the PC matrix. The smoke production rate (SPR) was reduced by 21.7% and the CO yield (COY) decreased by 33.24% in cone calorimetry test upon addition of 0.125 wt% of KSPH. The PC composite retained high transparency owing to high compatibility and minimal loading of the additive. Analysis of the residual char indicates that the flame-retardant mechanism stems from the carbonization of sulfonate and phosphorus groups in KSPH, along with the barrier effect of a highly graphitized and intact carbon layer. Moreover, impact and tensile strength were maintained at levels comparable to pure PC. This study provides a new strategy for designing efficient sulfonate-based flame retardants and expands the potential of transparent, thin-walled PC composites.

Recovering N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO), the cellulose solvent used in Lyocell fiber production, from aqueous mixtures is challenging due to azeotrope formation. Pervaporation offers advantages over conventional separation methods but requires membranes with high selectivity and flux. A kind of thin-film nanofibrous composite (TFNC) membranes is fabricated by depositing ethylenediamine-modified graphene oxide (EGO) onto electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrates via layer-by-layer assembly, followed by interfacial polymerization (IP) of a polyamide (PA) selective layer. The EGO interlayer serves dual functions: its abundant amine groups provide nucleation sites for uniform PA layer formation, reducing defects, while exhibiting preferential affinity for NMMO that enhances selectivity. After optimizing EGO loading, ethylenediamine concentration, and polymerization time, the membranes exhibit a well-defined Turing structure and achieve a permeation flux of 840 g/(m 2 h) with 99.7 wt% water in the permeate for 50 wt% NMMO/water mixtures at 75°C. The membranes maintain stable performance during 48-h continuous operation without NMMO thermal decomposition. These results demonstrate that TFNC membranes with functionalized GO interlayers provide an effective approach for NMMO recovery in Lyocell production.
