The development of efficient photocatalysts with high activity and high selectivity remains the biggest challenge limiting the development of photocatalysis . Herein, a novel Ce-doped TiO 2 aerogel (Ce–TiO 2 ) is synthesized via a simple one-step sol-gel technique, which integrates simultaneously supercritical drying, heat treatment, nano structuring, and self-diffusion for the formation of the Ce embedded in porous TiO 2 matrix with strong coupling. The Ce–TiO 2 aerogel exhibits typically homogeneous structures, and the resulting Ce–TiO 2 aerogel shows an extremely large BET specific surface area of 246.53 m 2 /g, which is responsible for the much-enhanced photocatalytic active sites. The incorporation of Ce has induced an impurity level in the band gap of the pristine TiO 2 aerogel, extending the light response range to the visible region. Meanwhile, the structural and compositional advantages are exploited to achieve fast separation and transfer of charge carriers. The yields of CH 4 and CO are 0.6 and 2.1 μmol/(g·h) under visible light without any additional co-catalysts or sacrificial agents, which are 1.4 and 15.6 times as high as those of pristine TiO 2 aerogel. In addition, the yields of CH 4 and CO are as high as 10.3 and 26.9 μmol/(g·h) under simulated solar spectrum conditions, which are 34.3 and 1.6 times as high as those of pristine TiO 2 aerogel. The density function theory (DFT) calculation confirms that the resulting Ce–TiO 2 aerogel enables efficient H 2 O and CO 2 adsorption and activation through the Ce cooperation and O vacancy, which greatly improves photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. This work reveals the development of aerogel photocatalyst for the photoreduction of CO 2 with H 2 O and CO 2 as feedstock .

In this study, a hierarchical rod-assembled, polypyrrole-modified Ce–Al–La trimetallic metal–organic framework (Ce–Al–La–MOFs@PPy) composite was successfully synthesized through a solvothermal method combined with in situ polymerization for efficient fluoride removal from aqueous solutions. The incorporation of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) into the multimetallic MOFs effectively enhanced the structural stability, surface properties, and adsorption performance of the material. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the optimal metal-to-ligand molar ratio was 3:1, and the prepared adsorbent exhibited excellent fluoride removal performance under weakly acidic conditions (pH = 5). The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model reached 216.92 mg·g−1at 45 °C. Adsorption kinetics were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the adsorption process was mainly governed by chemisorption. Mechanism investigations based on FTIR and XPS analyses demonstrated that fluoride removal mainly occurred through electrostatic attraction and coordination exchange between fluoride ions and the Ce/La active sites. In addition, the composite exhibited good selectivity, anti-interference ability toward coexisting ions, and satisfactory fluoride removal performance in practical industrial wastewater. These findings suggest that Ce–Al–La–MOFs@PPy is a promising adsorbent for efficient fluoride-contaminated wastewater treatment.

To address the stability limitations of conventional Fe─N─C catalysts caused by H 2 O 2 byproducts and reactive oxygen species (ROS), an innovative dual-metal single-atom synergistic strategy is developed, resulting in the fabrication of a hierarchically porous hollow carbon fiber catalyst co-anchored with Fe and Ce dual-atom sites (FeCe DAC/HCNF). The catalyst features an interconnected network of hollow channels and carbon nanocages, forming a hierarchical micro/mesoporous structure (specific surface area: 935.24 m 2 g −1 ) that enhances mass transport efficiency and maximizes exposure of active sites. The dual-atom site is developed to achieve a “kill two birds with one stone” effect: Ce single-atom sites adjacent to Fe centers not only effectively scavenge ROS and decompose H 2 O 2 , but also modulate the Fe centers, thereby synergistically enhancing the intrinsic ORR activity while mitigating carbon matrix degradation. The FeCe DAC/HCNF catalyst exhibits exceptional electrochemical performance and stability in both alkaline and acidic media. When integrated into zinc-air batteries, it achieves superior device performance compared to Fe─N─C catalysts, with a remarkable cycling durability of 2300 cycles (∼1100 h of stable operation). This work breaks the traditional activity-stability trade-off of catalysts, providing a novel pathway for developing high-durability zinc-air batteries.

The microstructure engineering of BaTiO 3 -based ceramic systems serves as an essential prerequisite to attain superior dielectric stability and reliability in modern multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). In this study, the effects of Ca doping on phase composition, microstructure, defect evolution, and dielectric temperature stability were systematically investigated in a novel BaTiO 3 -1 at%CeO 2 -3 at%MgO- x at%CaCO 3 ( x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) ceramic system. The results show that Ca doping promotes the tetragonality of the structure to increase first and then decrease. The addition of Ca 2+ changed the original defect composition of the ceramics: Ca 2+ promotes the conversion of Ce 3+ to Ce 4+ , reduces the reduction of Ti 4+ , and regulates the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The addition of Ca 2+ reduces the grain boundary activation energy ( 1.86 eV to 1.33 eV ), and reduces the carrier concentration to improve the ceramic resistivity. Ca 2+ promotes the enrichment of doped ions at the grain boundary to form a ' core-shell ' structure, which is characterized by broadened and suppressed dielectric peaks. When x = 6 at %, the ceramics meet the X8R specification (|( C T - C 25°C )/ C 25°C ×100%| ≤ 15%, T ∈ [-55°C, 150°C]), the dielectric constant at room temperature is 2802, and the dielectric loss is less than 0.02. This study reveals the Ca 2+ induced multi-ion synergistic regulation mechanism, which provides an experimental basis for the development of high stability and low loss lead-free MLCC dielectric materials that meet the X8R standard.

First report of Ce-doped CdS nanomaterials as n-butanol sensors. • Sensor exhibits a maximum response value of 224.2 at 50 ppm n-butanol. • Sensor demonstrates extremely fast response/recovery times for n-butanol. • Sensor exhibits excellent selectivity toward n-butanol. • Possesses outstanding long-term stability. Ce-doped CdS nanomaterials were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Various characterization techniques confirmed the successful substitution of Cd sites in the CdS lattice by Ce ions. Gas-sensing tests demonstrated that at an optimal Ce doping level of 1 at%, the sensor exhibited an outstanding response of 224.2–50 ppm n-butanol at 175 ℃, which is approximately 3.5 times higher than that of pristine CdS. Meanwhile, it displayed excellent response/recovery characteristics (14 s/10 s). Furthermore, the sensor showed superior selectivity toward n-butanol, with a negligible response to benzene gas. Mechanism analysis revealed that the abundant sulfur vacancies induced by Ce doping, along with the multivalent redox catalytic effect of Ce ions, are the key factors contributing to the significant enhancement of gas-sensing performance. Ce-doped Bi 7 O 9 I 3 /TiO 2 S-scheme heterojunction was constructed for PNRR. • Ce doping modulates the Fermi level and strengthens the built-in electric field. • The enhanced BIEF promotes directional charge transfer across the heterojunction. • Strengthened charge separation improves photocatalytic N 2 fixation performance. • N 2 reduction proceeds via an associative distal reaction pathway. Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation offers a sustainable route for ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions, but its practical application is severely limited by inefficient charge separation and sluggish interfacial charge-transfer kinetics. Herein, we develop a Ce-doped Bi 7 O 9 I 3 /TiO 2 S-scheme heterojunction through dopant-mediated Fermi level engineering to strengthen the interfacial built-in electric field (BIEF) and enhance photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The charge transfer behavior and N 2 reduction mechanism was investigated using photoelectrochemical measurements, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), theoretical calculations, and in situ FT-IR spectroscopy. Ce doping shifts the Fermi level of Bi 7 O 9 I 3 upward, thereby enlarging the Fermi level difference between Bi 7 O 9 I 3 and TiO 2 and strengthening the interfacial BIEF. The enhanced BIEF promotes directional interfacial charge transfer and suppresses photogenerated carrier recombination, leading to improved charge separation. Consequently, the optimized photocatalyst achieves an NH 3 production rate of 53.70 μmol g −1 h −1 in pure water, which is 8.21- and 3.76-fold higher than those of pristine Bi 7 O 9 I 3 and the undoped Bi 7 O 9 I 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction, respectively. In situ FT-IR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations indicate that the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction proceeds through an associative distal pathway. This work demonstrates that dopant-induced Fermi level engineering can effectively regulate interfacial electric fields and charge transfer behavior in S-scheme heterojunctions, providing a rational strategy for BIEF engineering in efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The development of highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is crucial for the advancement of zinc-air batteries. A dual-ligand stepwise preordination strategy is employed to synthesize the Fe–Ce bimetallic carbon-based catalyst (Ce/Fe–NC) with abundant Fe–N x /Ce–N x sites and Fe 3 O 4 , and a hierarchical micropore-mesopore structure. The introduction of Ce-related species significantly modulates the electronic structure of Fe sites, which is consistent with possible d–f orbital hybridization and d -band center regulation of Fe. Such electronic effect reduces the ORR energy barrier and endows Ce/Fe–NC with a half-wave potential of 0.875 V. The prepared CeO 2 with a fast Ce 3 + /Ce 4+ redox couple efficiently scavenges reactive oxygen species to inhibit the degradation of Fe–Nₓ sites and Fe 3 O 4 species, as well as the corrosion of carbon skeleton caused by Fenton reaction byproducts, ultimately enhancing the stability of the Ce/Fe–NC. After 30,000 accelerated cycles, the half-wave potential of the Ce/Fe–NC only decreases by 15 mV, and maintains a 95.4% current retention rate over 10,000 s. The zinc-air battery with Ce/Fe–NC achieves a peak power density of 230 mW cm −2 , a specific energy of 870.5 Wh kg –1 (Zn) , and a stable charge-discharge voltage gap over 100 h of cycling. This work provides a novel strategy for the preparation of high-performance non-precious metal ORR catalysts.

Precise Ce doping stabilizes LaMnO 3 nanoperovskites during high-temperature calcination. • Ce-induced V O pinning suppresses coarsening and builds a Mn 3+ –O–Mn 3+ /V O network. • LCMO achieves 9623 μg h −1 cm −2 NH 3 yield and 96.4% FE in a flow cell. • Low-cost LCMO scales to 78 g and converts municipal wastewater to ammonium fertilizer. Precise control of the geometry and electronic states of high-temperature perovskites is crucial for efficient electrocatalytic nitrite reduction (NO 2 RR) to remove NO 2 − pollutants and enable green ammonia synthesis. In this work, an A-site Ce substitution strategy is established to steer high-temperature crystallization through (V O ) pinning, enabling defect–lattice co-programming of Ce–LaMnO 3 (LCMO) with a nanoscale Mn 3+ -rich active network. Importantly, a synthesis-to-reactivity mechanism is elucidated for high-temperature perovskite NO 2 RR catalysts, where V O pinning suppresses sintering-driven agglomeration while concurrent e g state activation mitigates electronically sluggish Mn sites. Density functional theory further shows that the formation of Mn 3+ −O−Mn 3+ network in conjunction with V O lowers the free-energy demand of key hydrogenation steps and accelerates NO 2 RR kinetics. In the flow cell, the optimized LCMO catalyst delivers an ammonia yield rate of 9623 μg h −1 cm −2 with Faradaic efficiency of 96.4%, ranking it among the most efficient catalysts reported for NO 2 RR. Notably, LCMO is scalable to 78 g per batch without detectable structural change and at a low estimated cost of ca. 1.5 USD g −1 , highlighting its industrial relevance. In a solar-powered system, it directly converts real municipal wastewater into ammonium fertilizer with an (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 concentration of 1.8 g L −1 , establishing a scalable, solar-driven wastewater-to-fertilizer route for practical green ammonia stabilization. Catalytic ozonation can remove persistent organic micropollutants from water, but its efficiency is limited by how effectively catalysts convert ozone into reactive oxidants while remaining stable under aqueous conditions. Here, we report a carbon-sphere-mediated interfacial engineering strategy for Co-Ce bimetallic oxides with tunable oxygen vacancies. By adjusting carbon loading, the catalyst balances oxide accessibility, defect-associated surface oxygen species, and interfacial electronic coupling. The optimized Co 4 Ce 6 O x-δ @CS-1.6 catalyst achieved complete atrazine removal within 9 min and 53.4% total organic carbon reduction within 30 min, with an apparent rate constant of 0.426 min -1 , 10.9 times higher than single ozonation and 9.3 times higher than the parent Co-Ce oxide. Multitechnique characterization showed that the carbon coupling improved oxide dispersion and modulated Co/Ce redox states while maintaining high structural stability at Co active sites after ozonation. This electronic tuning driven by carbon integration shifted ozone activation from a molecular pathway on parent Co 4 Ce 6 O x to a vacancy-assisted dissociative pathway forming surface-bound *O on Co 4 Ce 6 O x-δ @CS-1.6. The resulting system promotes radical-mediated oxidation dominated by •OH and •O 2 - -related pathways, driving atrazine through dealkylation, dechlorination, hydroxylation, and further oxidation with an overall decrease in predicted aquatic toxicity. The catalyst also enables atrazine removal from real pesticide wastewater, removes diverse micropollutants, and improves COD reduction in real water matrices, highlighting oxide-carbon interfacial defect engineering as a promising route for ozone-based water purification under complex aqueous conditions. In this paper, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) hydrogel was synthesized following a one-step free-radical polymerization with N, N -methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linker. La(III) and Ce(III) were effectively removed from acidic aqueous solutions by using PSS hydrogel. FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, zeta potential analysis, and XPS were used to characterize the morphology and microstructure of PSS hydrogel. By varying pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial La(III) and Ce(III) ions concentrations, and interfering ions, the adsorption behavior of La(III) and Ce(III) ions on PSS hydrogel was studied. According to the experimental data, PSS hydrogel exhibited adsorption capacities above 200 mg·g −1 for La(III) and 180 mg·g −1 for Ce(III) over a wide pH range. Furthermore, adsorption data was simulated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic equations. For the description of adsorption equilibrium, Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isothermal models were used. According to the results, the Langmuir isotherm equation provided the best fit. Based on the Langmuir isotherm equation, the maximum absorption capacities of La(III) and Ce(III) by PSS hydrogel was 241.0 and 223.7 mg·g −1 , respectively. According to FTIR and XPS analysis, sulfonic acid groups were involved in the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. And ion exchange and complexation were the main mechanisms involved. Finally, reusability tests reveal that the PSS hydrogel can be reused 13 times without losing effectiveness.

SrTiO 3 is a quantum paraelectric with cubic symmetry that resists long-range ferroelectricity, but targeted substitution and defect ordering can unlock polar states. Here, we report novel ferroelectricity and high microwave permittivity in a novel Sr (1-1.5 x ) Ce x TiO 3 (SCTO@ x for x = 0.5) (SCTO) solid solution. XRD and Rietveld refinement reveal stabilization of an orthorhombic Pmmm phase, supported by TEM superlattice reflections linked to TiO 6 tilts and antiparallel A-site displacements, while energy landscape analysis confirms this orthorhombic configuration as the strain-relieved ground state. Raman spectra show defect-activated E g and A 1g modes from oxygen-vacancy ordering, and XPS identifies a Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ↔ Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ redox equilibrium with abundant vacancies. SEM/AFM reveal dense twin-striped grains that grow in size coarsen with sintering, reducing disorder. Dielectric spectra show a low-temperature relaxor response and a high-temperature transition: at 1270 °C both are diffuse and frequency-dependent, whereas at 1300 °C the high-temperature anomaly sharpens into a frequency-independent displacive ferroelectric transition (T C ∼ 449 °C, T CW ∼486 °C), supported by slim P–E loops, higher remanence, and TEM-confirmed domains. The coexistence of relaxor fluctuations with long-range ferroelectric order highlights a crossover from defect-induced short-range polarization to domain-driven coherence, which directly enhances microwave permittivity (ε r ∼82, Q × f∼12800 GHz, and τ f ∼ 205 ppm/°C) by combining soft-mode contributions with reduced extrinsic losses. These findings establish that reduction-controlled defect ordering stabilizes orthorhombic ferroelectricity absent in pristine SrTiO 3 , providing a clear design pathway for functional dielectrics through defect-engineered lattice symmetry.

In present work, Ce 3 + -doped Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG: Ce) transparent ceramics were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Si 3 N 4 as a multifunctional sintering additive. The effects of Si 3 N 4 on the microstructure, densification behavior, and luminescent properties were systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that Si 3 N 4 could be effectively incorporated into the YAG lattice through a charge-balanced substitution mechanism in which Si 4+ -N 3- pairs replace Al 3+ -O 2- , resulting in a significant redshift of the Ce 3+ emission from 545 nm to 582 nm due to enhanced crystal field splitting and nephelauxetic effects. Furthermore, the substitution process also yields in-situ formation of SiO 2 , which promotes densification via liquid-phase sintering, achieves a relative density exceeding 99.5 %, and partially mitigates carbon contamination. When applied in phosphor-converted white LEDs, the Si 3 N 4 -doped YAG: Ce ceramics enabled a substantial reduction in correlated color temperature (CCT) from 4903 K to 3196 K, demonstrating their potential as efficient warm-white light converters without requiring additional red phosphors.
