Synthesis of Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets for ascorbic acid detection

Kong Lijun,Chen Jiahao,Peng Zehui,Zhang Jiawei,Gao Yuan,Yan Shancheng

Metal alloy nanosheets play a very important role as catalysts, which also show obvious advantages in the field of biosensor. Compared with traditional methods, such as enzyme method, gas chromatography or optical absorbance, the detection of ascorbic acid is simpler and more stable by spectroscopy. Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets with a thickness of about 1–3 nm and an average lateral size of 3–5 nm were synthesized in this study by the soft template method. These nanosheets were used to construct a sensor for measuring the concentration of ascorbic acid. The initial UV-Vis absorption peaks for the Ag–Cu alloy nanosheets in aqueous solution were effectively quenched upon addition of ascorbic acid. As the ascorbic acid concentration was in the range of 5–250 mmol/L changes, the UV absorbance intensity for the sensor also changed. Because of its wide detection range, high sensitivity, and excellent stability, the Ag–Cu alloy sensor method may be an excellent alternative to the traditional ascorbic acid measure method.

Removal of hexavalent chromium from wastewater by Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles

Ye Jien,Wang Yi,Xu Qiao,Wu Hanxin,Tong Jianhao,Shi Jiyan

Passivation of nanoscale zerovalent iron hinders its efficiency in water treatment, and loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmet–Teller isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. The removal of Cr(VI) was better fitted by pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal was spontaneous and endothermic, and the increase of reaction temperature facilitated the process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH) 3 and Cr x Fe 1−x (OH) 3 coprecipitation. Our work could be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.

Covalent organic framework nanorods bearing single Cu sites for efficient photocatalysis

Zhiyue Dong,Liang Zhang,Jiang Gong,Qiang Zhao

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) nanostructures capable of efficient visible light absorption, complete holes-electrons separation, and reactant enrichment remain a synthetic challenge for advanced photocatalysts. Herein, we rationally design a novel Cu-coordinated terpyridyl-based, 2D lamellar COF-909(Cu) nanorods. The coordinated single Cu sites not only dramatically enhance the visible light absorption and achieve the complete electrons-holes separation, but also provide the specific binding sites to enrich N/O-containing organic toxicants. The laminar arrangement and 1D nanochannel of COF-909(Cu) nanorods shorten the transfer distance of electrons to the active sites. As a proof of concept, it shows excellent performance in the photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole, which surpasses the-state-of-art photocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations confirm the structure-function relationship between the single Cu sites and the complete electrons-holes separation as well as strong binding sites for target molecules.

Efficient Cu/CeO2 for Ketonization of Carboxylic Acids with Synergistic Interactions

Shan Zhang,Binbo Jiang,Mingliang Tong,Yao Yang,Zuwei Liao,Zhengliang Huang,Jingyuan Sun,Jingdai Wang,Yongrong Yang

Cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts are critical to the ketonization of carboxylic acids for producing biofuels and platform chemicals. Herein, nanocrystalline Cu-loaded CeO2 with 1.0–9.0 wt % Cu loadings was synthesized by the precipitation-impregnation method, in which 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 exhibits the best performance of 72% acetone yield at 330 °C, 97% 3-pentanone yield at 360 °C, and 86% 4-heptanone yield at 400 °C, with good durability up to 10 h on stream. Detailed analyses reveal that 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 has the highest percentage of O-vacancy sites, more moderate acid–base sites, and better capacity to adsorb and activate carboxylic acids. In situ DRIFT spectra indicate that monodentate, bridging bidentate, and chelating bidentate modes coexist when carboxylic acid is dissociatively adsorbed on 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2. Based on the above investigations, we propose a mechanism over 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 through the β-ketoacid intermediate route, which gives more details to help future research into the design and development of catalysts for ketonization.

Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film for SERS detection of gaseous molecule

Junao Zhang,Xin Xie,Xi He,Xiangnan Gong,Xin Zhang,Anping Liu,Yingzhou Huang

Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a powerful and sensitive technique for the detection of various molecules, including gaseous analytes. However, the development of efficient, stable, and reusable SERS substrates for gaseous molecule remains a challenge. This work introduces a novel Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film for SERS detection of gaseous molecule, which consists of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) core and ZIF-8 porous shell on Cu foils. With strong enhancement of electromagnetic field by AgNPs core and effective caption of gaseous molecule by ZIF-8 porous shell, this substrate exhibits good SERS performance of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) and 4-mercaptophenol (DP) gaseous molecules, whose limit of detection (LOD) could reach 9.12 × 10 −10 M and 9.91 × 10 −9 M, respectively. Furthermore, the detection of gaseous benzaldehyde diffused by oil paint is explored by this developed SERS substrate for application. To achieve accurate identification of harmful gaseous molecule in complex volatile organic compounds (VOC), the deep learning (DL) approach is performed based on SERS spectra obtained from this Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film. Our results demonstrate that the identification of gaseous benzaldehyde in VOC diffused from commercial oil paint has a high accuracy at 97.7% with the help of ANN algorithms, which points out the Cu-Ag@ZIF-8 film has good performance and huge potential for SERS detection of gaseous molecule.

Tannic acid functionalized Cu-BTC composite for electrochemical sensing of glucose

Wei Yunping,Wang Nan,Liu Xingcen,Lin Meng

In this experiment, a copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu-BTC) was successfully prepared and utilized to compose a copper-tannic acid (TA) complex by in situ tannic acid etching on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. The Cu-BTC was obtained by the electrodeposition method with a voltage of − 1.6 V. The TA-Cu complex retains the frame structure of the metal–organic framework and has good electrochemical properties. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometric methods were used to estimate the performance of the TA-Cu-modified electrode in glucose detection. The current response of the TA-Cu sensor shows a linear relationship with glucose concentration at 0.5 V in NaOH solution. The modified electrode as an electrochemical glucose sensor exhibits good sensitivity with a low detection limit of 0.002 mM. The TA-Cu-modified electrode also exhibited good stability, anti-interference, and repeatability in glucose detection.

Gyromagnetic properties of Cu-substituted NiZn ferrites for millimeter-wave applications

Hongwei Yang,Fang Xu,Yulong Liao,Yong Ren,Guixiang Liu,Xingwu Yuan,Yanhui Wu,Honglan Lai,Bo Dai

In this work, NiCuZn ferrites with different CuO contents were prepared by solid-state method. The influences of the divalent Cu 2+ on the crystal structure, microstructure and magnetic properties of NiCuZn ferrite were studied in detail. X-ray diffraction characterization showed that Cu 2+ may either replace Ni 2+ and enter into crystal lattice, or distributed at grain boundaries in the form of compound. SEM results showed that adding appropriate amount of CuO can promote grain growth and prepare dense NiCuZn ferrites. Especially, the density of the ferrite sample reaches its maximum value of 5.23 g/cm 3 when the amount of CuO is 0.20. However, superfluous Cu 2+ exists in the form of liquid phase at local grain boundaries once the content of Cu 2+ reached 0.25. Moreover, the magnetic hysteresis loops revealed that the specific saturation magnetization first increased and then decreased and the highest value of 76.6 emu/g was obtained at x = 0.10. Consequently, a NiCuZn ferrite with an appropriate microstructure and with high density (5.16 g/cm 3 ), high saturation magnetization (76.0 emu/g), low ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth (160 Oe) and 4π Ms (4930 G) could be obtained at a Cu content of x = 0.15.

Mechanisms of Cu(II) enhancing photolysis of tetracycline under UV irradiation

Chang Xu,Yue Feng,Xin-Xin Zhao,Shan Zhao,Shu-Guang Wang,Chao Song

Tetracycline (TC) and Cu(II) have been frequently detected in natural and engineering waters, especially in aquaculture water. However, literatures involving in the influence of Cu(II) on the transformation of TC are still insufficient. In this study, we investigated the photolytic fate of TC induced by Cu(II) under UV irradiation. Cu(II) significantly promoted the removal of TC with photolysis rate constant of 0.467 h −1 at TC:Cu(II) molar ratio = 1, which was 49.04% higher than that without Cu(II) (0.238 h −1 ). Cu(II) exhibited multiple influences on both direct and indirect photolysis of TC. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) made a major contribution to Cu(II)-induced TC photolysis, with contribution rates of 24.69% and 12.96%, respectively. Besides, Cu(II) preferred to complex between O20-O21 or O26-O27 to form TC-Cu(II) complexes with complexation ratio of 1. The Condensed Fukui Function and Condensed Double Descriptors values of TC-Cu(II) complexes were calculated for the first time with density functional theory. It showed that TC-Cu(II) complexes were more vulnerable to ROS attack, thus promoting TC degradation. Moreover, Cu(II) greatly changed the photolysis path of TC, mainly through hydroxylation, hydrogen extraction, and deamidation reaction into new byproducts. Furthermore, Cu(II) changed the toxicity of the products via changing the original TC photolysis products. This study provides new insights for the environmental fate of antibiotics, and also has far-reaching implications for wastewater treatment in pharmaceutical and aquaculture industry.

Roussin's black salt decorated Cu-doped ZnO nanoparticles for bacterial inhibition

Lingling Lv,Yaoqing Chu,Lianjiang Tan

Antibacterial RBS@Cu:ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by decorating Cu-doped ZnO NPs with Roussin's black salt (RBS), a nitric oxide (NO) precursor. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) tests indicated that the RBS@Cu:ZnO NPs were particulate matter with crystal morphology and nanoscaled sizes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed the wurtzite crystal structure of the NPs. Under irradiation of 543 nm laser, the RBS@Cu:ZnO NPs released NO in a controllable manner due to the decomposition of RBS. Cu-doped ZnO with a Cu/Zn molar ratio of 5% showed antibacterial activity in response to ultraviolet and visible light by photocatalysis. The doping of Cu enhanced the visible light absorption of ZnO by reducing its band gap. The RBS@Cu:ZnO NPs exhibited high antibacterial activity originating from the synergistic bacterial inhibitory effects of Cu-doped ZnO and released NO under visible laser irradiation. More importantly, the antibacterial activity could be controlled by adjusting the power output of laser irradiation. The RBS@Cu:ZnO NPs are promising antibacterial agents with potential applications in biomedicine and pharmaceutics.

Enhancing CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol via Constructing Cu–ZnO–La2O3 Interfaces

Ji Yaxiong,Lin Shuang,Xu Guihong,Chen Tianen,Gong Jianchao,Meng Fanbin,Wang Yuanhao

Abstract Catalytic conversion of CO 2 to methanol with H 2 from renewable energy has attracted increasing interest as a promising strategy for reducing excessive CO 2 emissions. However, the performance of reported various catalysts still suffers from low methanol yield with a passable CO 2 conversion. In this work, Cu–ZnO–La 2 O 3 interfaces are constructed with various La 2 O 3 mole ratio. Compared to Cu/ZnO, the optimized catalyst (i.e., Cu 0.6 Zn 0.2 La 0.4 ) exhibits a much higher mass-specific methanol formation rate (159.3 g MeOH /kg cat /h) at 240 °C and 3 MPa. A series of ex-situ and in-situ characterizations, such as X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 O titration measurements, and in-situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy ( in-situ DRIFTS) study, are used to investigate its structure and mechanism study. The dispersion of Cu over Cu/ZnO/La 2 O 3 catalyst is significantly enhanced, forming more Cu–ZnO–La 2 O 3 interfaces. LaO x species favor CO 2 activation and generate more carbon intermediates species for CO 2 hydrogenation. Furthermore, more Cu + is bonded, which stabilizes the key intermediate, inhibits its desorption, and facilitates its further hydrogenation to methanol. This work is expected to offer an effective strategy to develop new catalysts with high performance for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Graphical Abstract

Study on the Degradation of Methylene Blue by Cu-Doped SnSe

Li Fan,Hongliang Zhu,Kaili Wang,Hao Liu,Weina Hu,Xin Xu,Shancheng Yan

Treatment of organic wastewater is still a difficult problem to solve. In this paper, Cu-doped SnSe powder was synthesized by a convenient and efficient hydrothermal method. Meanwhile, the degradation effect of different doping concentrations of SnSe on methylene blue was investigated. It was found that at low doping concentrations, the degradation effect on methylene blue was not obvious because Cu was dissolved in the lattice of the SnSe matrix at low concentrations. As the doping concentration increased, SnSe changed from a layered structure to a nanocluster structure with reduced particle size, and a mixed phase of SnSe and Cu2SnSe4appeared. In fact, the degradation effect on methylene blue was significantly enhanced, and we found that the catalytic degradation effect on methylene blue was best at a doping concentration of 10 wt.%.

Ceo2/Cus Nanoplates Electroreduce Co2 to Ethanol with Stabilized Cu+ Species

Zi Yang,Deguang Ji,Zhi Li,Zidong He,Yang Hu,Jie Yin,Yichao Hou,Pinxian Xi,Chun-Hua Yan

Copper-based electrocatalysts effectively produce multicarbon (C 2+ ) compounds during the electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR). However, big challenges still remain because of the chemically unstable active sites. Here, cerium is used as a self-sacrificing agent to stabilize the Cu + of CuS, due to the facile Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox. CeO 2 -modified CuS nanoplates achieve high ethanol selectivity, with FE up to 54% and FE C2+ ≈ 75% in a flow cell. Moreover, in situ Raman spectroscopy and in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicate that the stable Cu + species promote C  C coupling step under CO 2 RR. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the stronger * CO adsorption and lower C  C coupling energy, which is conducive to the selective generation of ethanol products. This work provides a facile strategy to convert CO 2 into ethanol by retaining Cu + species.
