Effects of Bi2O3–CuO addition on the dielectric properties of MgO–TiO2(w) ceramics sintered at low temperatures

Shuai Yan,Sen Wang,Gaobin Liu,Qi Yuan,Kuoming Song,He Zhao,Xin Li,Rongzheng Shen

Herein, MgO–12 % TiO 2 (w) ceramics with different contents of Bi 2 O 3 –CuO sintering aid were prepared using a solid-state method. The effects of the sintering aid content on the sintering temperature and the dielectric and mechanical properties of the ceramics were studied. The material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction and Precision LCR tester and universal testing machine and Archimedes drainage method. When the Bi 2 O 3 –CuO content was less than 9 wt%, the ceramic sample has higher dielectric properties. When the Bi 2 O 3 –CuO content was greater than 9 wt%, the dielectric properties will deteriorate. This is because Bi 2 O 3 participates in the chemical reaction between MgO and TiO 2 , forming a high dielectric loss Bi 4 Ti 3 O 7 phase. At high temperatures, Cu 2+ can easily change valence to Cu + , promoting oxygen vacancies and increasing dielectric loss in ceramic samples. The introduction of Bi 2 O 3 –CuO produces new MgTiO 3 , Mg 2 TiO 4 , and Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 phases in the sample structure, resulting in a structure in which the MgO grains in the sample are surrounded by the new phases that appear around them. This structure fills the pores, increases density, enhances mechanical properties. The dielectric properties of the ceramics were the when the sintering temperature was 1050 °C, and the Bi 2 O 3 –CuO content was 3 wt%. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss were 11.19 and 1.17 × 10 −4 , respectively. The bending strength of the ceramic sample increased from 138.72 MPa to 179.64 MPa when the Bi 2 O 3 –CuO content was increased from 3 wt% to 15 wt%. The Bi 2 O 3 –CuO sintering aid enables MgO to be better applied in ceramic substrates.

CuO/Cu(OH)2@g-C3N4 derived from CuBTC/g-C3N4 for two channel photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production

Lu Qin,Peng She,Panlong Si,Suqin Liu,Gaopeng Dai,Cong Pan

Photocatalytic production of H 2 O 2 is indeed a safe, sustainable and cost-effective technology, offering an environmentally friendly solution to the energy crisis through solar photocatalysis. However, it still faces challenges such as reliance on organic electron donors and pure O 2 , as well as inefficiencies in hole utilization. To overcome these limitations, a dual-channel photocatalytic system has been developed. In this study, we showcase the efficiency of the CuO/Cu(OH) 2 @g-C 3 N 4 composite, derived from CuBTC/g-C 3 N 4 via NaOH treatment, as a high-performance dual-channel photocatalyst for H 2 O 2 production. Under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm), this composite achieves a H 2 O 2 yield of 1354 μmol/L in 120 min without any sacrificial agent, outperforming g-C 3 N 4 by 8.4 times, CuO by 13.6 times and CuO@g-C 3 N 4 by 1.9 times. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra confirmed that HO • and O 2 •− are intermediate products in the photocatalytic process, following a two-step single-electron reaction pathway. The superior activity of CuO/Cu(OH) 2 @g-C 3 N 4 in H 2 O 2 generation can be attributed to the synergistic effects of OH bonds on the CuO@g-C 3 N 4 Z-type heterojunction and Cu(OH) 2 . This research presents a straightforward and promising approach for developing highly efficient photocatalysts for energy conversion.

Dongkun Xiao,Yang Wang,Dongxiang Zhang,Yingmin Liu,Haoran Wang,Yalin Li,Huizhen Wei,Shijie Wang,Minglong Sun,Mojie Sun

Rapid and effective hydrogen sulfide ( H 2 S ) detection is vital to ensure safety in industrial environments, where it is a common toxic gas. This study utilized Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors to prepare hollow nanocage structure-like CuO/ZnO sensors. By optimizing the ratio of CuO to ZnO, the resulting CuO/ZnO nanomaterials demonstrated ultra-high sensitivity and a swift response to low H 2 S concentrations. The experimental results show that, thanks to its unique nanocage structure and abundant active sites on the surface, the sensor responds up to 3423 to 10 ppm H 2 S with a response time of only 10 s. In addition, the sensor exhibits good stability, selectivity and low lower detection limit at a low operating temperature of 115 °C, and the lower limit of detection for H 2 S reaches 100 ppb (3.04). Furthermore, the examination of the gas-sensing mechanism exposed the collaboration of CuO/ZnO nanocages in gas adsorption and electron transportation. Remarkably, the generation of p-n heterostructures greatly enhanced the sensitivity and selectivity towards H 2 S , while providing a model for constructing and producing high-performance and enduring sensors.

Determination of Trace Cd(II) in Water and Cosmetics based on Au/GO/CuO Nanocomposite Functionalized Electrochemical Sensor

Rui Cao,Guoshun Chen,Chuanyi Feng,Yu Qi,Kun Xiang,Peipei Li,Jun Wang,Xucheng Fu,Cheng Yang,Ju Wu

Cadmium (Cd(II)) is highly toxic to environmental, and while many approaches have been developed to measure cumulative Cd(II) concentration over time, online monitoring of spatiotemporal changes remains challenging. To address this, an electrochemical sensor for determination of ultra-trace Cd(II) was developed, based on gold/graphene oxide/copper oxide (Au/GO/CuO) nanomaterials modifying glassy carbon electrode. CuO nanoparticles were prepared by a green synthesis method using plant extract, and the Au nanoparticles were deposited on the GO/CuO nanosubstrates by an in situ electrochemical method. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The CuO nanoparticles are layered flower-like with an average particle size of 200–500 nm. Au/GO/CuO nanocomposites with high specific surface area and excellent electronic transmission capability enhanced the electrochemical signal of the sensor. Owing to the synergistic effect of Au/GO/CuO, the sensor exhibited good performance to Cd(II) in the ultra-wide range of 5 × 10−11–5 × 10−7 M with a detection limit of 2 × 10−11 M. The sensor was successfully quantified for determining Cd(II) with desirable recovery, displaying outstanding long-term stability, high sensitivity, and reproducibility. After validating its accuracy, this sensor was successfully used for detection of Cd(II) in water and cosmetic samples.

Hierarchical CuO nanosheets encasing nanorods via a singular potential-cycling activation: Innovations in supercapacitor energy density and longevity

Yuyin Dai,Qiuyu Lin,Qi Wang,Hongguang Zhao,Yinghua Li

Copper oxides (CuO), by virtue of their exceptional electrical conductivity, benign environmental profile, and economic viability, have emerged as indispensable constituents in the design and development of binder-free electrodes for advanced supercapacitor systems. The ongoing quest for the synthesis of CuO nanomaterials through gentle yet economically feasible methodologies held considerable promise for broadening their applicability within the domain of energy storage devices. In this investigation, a novel architectural innovation was achieved through the integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within the framework of an in-situ electrooxidation process, culminating in the formation of a distinctive CuO-CNT nanorod configuration. Subsequent to this fabrication, the electrode material was subjected to an extensive cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation for 2000 cycles, which precipitated a profound morphological evolution. This process resulted in the emergence of 2D hierarchical nanosheet arrays enveloping 1D nanorods, a configuration herein designated as CuO-CNT-2000. This meticulously engineered lamellar structure conferred upon the material an extraordinary specific surface area, quantified at 219.6 m 2 g⁻ 1 , and an impressive specific capacitance of 709.1 F g⁻ 1 . Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled utilizing this advanced material exhibited a remarkable energy density, measured at 38.09 Wh kg⁻ 1 . Notably, even after enduring 60,000 charge-discharge cycles, the device demonstrated a retention of 82.36 % of its initial energy density, coupled with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.43 %, thus attesting to its superior electrochemical stability and longevity. The efficacy of the CV activation technique in facilitating significant morphological refinement, augmenting the specific surface area, and enhancing the electrochemical performance of the material suggests a broad applicability of this method to a diverse array of other electrode materials, potentially revolutionizing the design and fabrication of next-generation energy storage systems.

Insights into ibuprofen degradation in boron-doped CuO/PMS systems: Role of Cu, kinetics, mechanisms and degradation pathways

Chaoqun Tan,Yanxiang Huang,Xiaochuan Lin,Peng Li,Lianghu Su,Qiongfang Wang

Recently, copper-based catalysts have become increasingly popular for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation due to its non-toxicity and effectiveness. In this study, we doped crystalline boron into CuO by coprecipitation and obtained a novel C-boron doped CuO catalyst (B-CuO). Characterization of materials revealed that the obtained B-CuO maintained a similar nanobelt structure to CuO. Meanwhile, BET surface area decreased from 13.32 to 12.03 m 2 /g and average pore diameter increased from 12.90 to 30.00 nm. The total pore volume also rose from 0.043 to 0.09 cm 3 /g. Compared to the CuO/PMS system, the B-CuO/PMS system showed higher ibuprofen (IBP) removal rate (92.9 % vs. 92.0 %) and k obs (0.130 min −1 vs. 0.063 min −1 ) with increased TOC removal (11.6 % vs. 8.4 %) in 30 min at 0.6 mM PMS, 0.096 g/L B-CuO, and 20 μM IBP, pH 7.5, T  = 25 °C. Based on quenching tests, EPR, and LC-MS results, a possible mechanism of IBP degradation dominated by ≡Cu(III) and OH with contribution ratio of 88.45 % and 11.55 % was proposed. Hydroxyl addition, demethylation, and decarboxylation were main IBP degradation pathways. In summary, doping of C-boron into CuO substantially enhanced PMS activation for IBP degradation. However, addressing the mineralization of pollutants remained a challenge.

Jin Yao,Ai Wenhui,Chen Ge,Zhang Guodong,Wang Fang,Zhou Ting,Zhang Zhiqing,Wang Xiufeng

CuO nanoparticles with good water solubility and uniform particle size were successfully prepared. Interestingly, the oxidase-like activity of CuO NPs was continuously enhanced by the addition of thiourea (TU), and the enzyme activity was further enhanced by the addition of aluminum ion (Al 3+ ). By systematically exploring and optimizing the experimental conditions, including the key parameters such as temperature, reaction time, and pH, a fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode sensing system based on CuO nanoparticles was constructed. The detection range of TU and Al 3+ were 1-100 µM and 1-100 µM, respectively, and the selectivity and precision of detection were further improved. In addition, the catalytic mechanism of CuO NPs as oxidase-like catalysts and the specific process in the reaction were investigated. Finally, the nano-sensing system was successfully applied to the analysis of three real environmental samples, namely, tap water, lake water and river water, which provided an effective new strategy for the future development of nano-sensing technology for TU and Al 3+ . A multi-layer antimicrobial cellulose filter with electrostatic adsorption properties prepared by coating cellulose with chitosan and CuO

Jingyi Nie,Jianfei Liao,Tintin Jiao,Binron Sun,Meiyun Zhang,Ruiting Yang,Yueqing Li

The health impacts of air pollution such as particulate matter (PM) and bioaerosols have prompted a focus on the utilization of personal protective filters. Traditional filters pose environmental concerns due to their non-biodegradable composition, while cellulose presents a promising alternative for biodegradable air filtration applications. This research involved the development of cellulose filter substrates with a customizable pore structure by adjusting the nanofiber content in cellulose filters and employing a simultaneous freeze-drying method. By integrating chitosan and CuO nanoparticles, the filters gained electrostatic adsorption capabilities, leading to a substantial enhancement in filtration efficiency, as well as imparting moisture resistance and durable antimicrobial properties to the filter. Subsequently, a three-layer cellulose filter integrated with chitosan and CuO (abbreviated as Int-Cs&CuO) was constructed based on the generalized Murray’s law to enable multi-stage PM filtration. The Int-Cs&CuO cellulose filter demonstrated filtration efficiencies of 99.2 % for non-oily PM 0.3 and 99.5 % for oily PM 0.3 , with a low pressure drop of 49.5 Pa. Under humid conditions, the filtration efficiency of the Int-Cs&CuO cellulose filter against PM 0.3 particles was minimally impacted, showcasing a decrease of only 1.3 %. Notably, the filter exhibited complete biodegradation in composted soil within approximately 2 months.

Modification of microporous bionanocomposite films with visible light-activated photocatalytic antimicrobial TNT-CuO nanoparticles for active fruit packaging

Huan Zhang,Shuting Huang,Yali Zhao,Hong Sabrina Tian,Mengshi Lin,Yunfei Xie,Zhilong Yu

Active packaging technologies are evolving to enhance the preservation of fresh produce by fighting against microbial contamination and controlling internal packaging atmospheres. This study introduced an active fruit packaging called MT film, created by modifying a microporous polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/cellulose nanocrystal bionanocomposite film with CuO-doped titania nanotubes. The MT film, with an average micropore size of 2.4 μm, displayed excellent mechanical properties and hydrophobicity due to its crosslinked structure. When exposed to visible light, the MT film could produce reactive oxygen species, effectively inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli O157:H7. Moreover, experiments on blueberry preservation demonstrated that the MT film could remove excess CO 2 and maintain a higher O 2 level. Under visible light, this film significantly reduced total viable count (4.6 ± 0.2 log CFU/g) and mold colony count (2.6 ± 0.1 log CFU/g), with Bacillus and Ascochyta being the primary inhibited genera. These findings highlight the potential of MT film in utilizing visible light to prevent microbial growth on blueberries and regulating the gas exchange of food packaging. MT film holds promise as an active packaging solution to improve the quality and shelf life of fresh produce while reducing food losses in the supply chain.

Modulating surface microenvironment based on Ag-adorned CuO flower-liked nanospheres for strengthening C-‍C coupling during CO2RR

Zhixiu Yang,Xiaoxuan Guo,Yong Chen,Lijing Gao,Ruiping Wei,Guomin Xiao

Modulating the surface microenvironment is crucial in strengthening C C coupling, leading to increasing selectivity in the production of multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products during CO 2 electroreduction. Herein, we have concentrated on investigating how to control the effect of surface distribution of active components of a series of Ag-decorated CuO , denoted as xAg/yCuO. These catalysts with similar chemical elements and morphology are designed, but they exhibit different selectivity in the CO 2 electroreduction process. As a result, the Ag particles in 3Ag/CuO aggregates, while the Ag in 2Ag/2CuO and Ag/3CuO is uniformly distributed on the flower-like CuO nanosphere . Besides, 3Ag/CuO has the highest Faraday efficiency (FE) of CO with a value of 30.9 % at 0.8 V vs. RHE, demonstrating rich-Ag catalysts are beneficial to produce CO. 2Ag/2CuO shows excellent FE C2H4 of 51.4 % at -1.2 V vs. RHE due to the highly dispersed distribution of Ag on the flower-like CuO and higher vacancy O. Ag/3CuO exhibits higher FE H2 compared to other catalysts across a wide potential range, and its minimal impedance is attributed to its exceptional performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction . The proposed reaction pathway for the most effective catalysts 2Ag/2CuO, as determined by in-situ attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS), involves the following steps: CO 2 →*CO 2 − → *COOH → *CO→ *CHO→ *OCHCHO→ *OCHCH 2 → C 2 H 4 . These findings demonstrate that controlling the surface structure can influence the local environment to enhance the efficiency of CO 2 electroreduction.

Morphology engineering of hollow core@shell structured Co3O4@CuO-NiO for fast hydrogen release from ammonia borane methanolysis

Jinyun Liao,Yuanzhong Li,Jingjing Tian,Yufa Feng,Quanbing Liu,Hao Li

Catalytic methanolysis of ammonia borane is an integrated hydrogen production/storage technology with bright prospects, while its wide application is impeded by the high-cost of catalysts. In this work, hollow core@shell structured (HCSS) Co 3 O 4 @CuO-NiO with a size of 300–500 nm and a shell thickness of ca. 100 nm has been designed for ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 ) methanolysis for rapid hydrogen release. The possible formation mechanism of HCSS-Co 3 O 4 @CuO-NiO is proposed based on a series of characterization results, which is crucial for the design and preparation of nanocatalysts with similar architectures. Benefiting from the optimized compositions and electronic structures, the best HCSS-Co 3 O 4 @CuO-NiO sample exhibits high catalytic activity in NH 3 BH 3 methanolysis with a turnover frequency of 67.1 min −1 , surpassing that of all the noble-metal-free catalysts in previous reports. A possible reaction mechanism of NH 3 BH 3 methanolysis is put forward based on the in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) characterization and kinetic isotope effect (KIE) experimental results. This work supplies a novel avenue for developing cheap and robust catalysts towards NH 3 BH 3 methanolysis by tailoring the catalysts’ morphology to hollow core@shell structures.
