The Songaria Cynomorium polysaccharide-doped carbon dots (SP-CDs) were synthesized by carbonization-heating method. Songaria Cynomorium polysaccharide (PS) was the carbon source. Ethylenediamine (EDA), phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ), and concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) were dopants, respectively. The SP-CDs exhibited the maximum fluorescence emission wavelength of 540 nm under the excitation wavelength of 485 nm (“ON” state). After the introduction of Fe 3+ with an intermediate bridging effect, the fluorescence intensity of SP-CDs was quenched due to the formation of the complex (SP-CDs/Fe 3+ ) between SP-CDs and Fe 3+ (“OFF” state). Subsequently, the fluorescence signal returned to “ON” due to the redox reaction between AA and Fe 3+ when ascorbic acid was introduced into SP-CDs/Fe 3+ solution. Therefore, the synthesized SP-CDs could be used as a “switch type” fluorescence sensor for detecting Fe 3+ and AA. The analysis revealed that the linear range of Fe 3+ extended from 0.05 to 500.00 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.02 μM (S/ N = 3). The scope of analysis for AA was determined to be within the range of 0.65–400.00 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.09 μM ( S/N = 3). Furthermore, the recommended fluorescence sensor was successfully employed for quantitatively detecting Fe 3+ and AA in serum samples.

In this study, biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized by an one-step hydrothermal method using folium cycas as a carbon source. By optimizing the reaction conditions, the fluorescence quantum yield of CQDs was obtained to be as high as 8.91%, and strong blue emission light was emitted. The characterization results showed that the CQDs were quasi-spherical with an average particle size of 2.69 ± 0.08 nm and contained a large number of hydrophilic functional groups with excellent water solubility and photostability. The CQDs showed high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of Fe3+, with a low limit of detection of 0.72 μM and a wide linear range of 0–200 μM. The practical applicability of the CQDs was further established by carrying out Fe3+ detection in environmental sample analysis. Besides, CQDs have been successfully applied to in vitro cell imaging and bioimaging. The final by-product of the hydrothermal reaction, biochar, is used for dye adsorption. This work identifies the importance of using a relatively green process and an inexpensive biomass precursor to produce high-quality CQDs that hold a promising future for use in metal ion detection, bioimaging, and practical sensing applications.

Fabrication of novel magnetic porous materials for efficient magnetic adsorption and removal of environmental contaminants still remains great important and interesting in environmental science. Magnetic microporous organic networks (MONs) are a recent class of magnetic microporous materials highly potential in diverse areas. However, the strategies for the fabrication of magnetic MONs or MONs-derived magnetic adsorbents are still quite limited. To further develop novel method for the fabrication of MONs-derived magnetic adsorbents and to extend the application of MONs in environmental science, here we reported a convenient and new method by decorating Fe 3+ on MON-2COOH to fabricate MON-derived magnetic porous carbon (MPC) for efficient adsorption and removal of cationic dyes from aqueous solution. The Fe 3+ was firstly decorated on -COOH enriched MON-2COOH and then calcined to produce MPC under Ar atmosphere. The obtained MPC were well characterized and conducted to the adsorption of cationic dyes. The porous, negatively charged and unsaturated bond contained MPC gave extremely fast adsorption kinetics for cationic dyes via electrostatic, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The adsorption of malachite green on MPC was fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic, Langmuir adsorption and monolayer adsorption models, and gave much faster adsorption kinetics and larger adsorption capacities than anionic dyes. Furthermore, the good superparamagnetic behavior and reusability made MPC could be easily recycled and reused. This work not only provided a new strategy to synthesis MON-derived MPC, but also possessed the potential of magnetic MONs-based adsorbents for the adsorption and removal of cationic dyes or trace contaminants in environment.

We report on the fabrication of an amphiphilic random copolymer-based colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for Fe 3+ ions that was prepared by free radical polymerization of a novel rhodamine-based Fe 3+ -recognizing monomer , R6GEM, with N -vinylpyrrolidone (NVP). Because of its amphiphilic property, the copolymer P(NVP-co-R6GEM) can self-assemble into micelles , which allows it to be used as a chemosensor in aqueous solution. Upon addition of Fe 3+ ions to the micelle solution, visual color change and fluorescence enhancement were observed. Moreover, other metal ions did not induce obvious changes to the absorption and fluorescence spectra . The water dispersibility and biocompatibility of these polymer micelles could provide a new strategy for detecting analytes in environmental and biological systems.

The feasibility of the degradation of phenazone (PNZ), a common anti-inflammatory drug used for reducing pain and fever, in water at neutral pH by an electrochemically assisted Fe 3+ -ethylenediamine disuccinate-activated persulfate process (EC/Fe 3+ -EDDS/PS) was investigated. The efficient removal of PNZ at neutral pH condition was mainly attributed to the continuous activation of PS via electrochemically driven regenerated Fe 2+ from a Fe 3+ -EDDS complex at the cathode. The influence of several critical parameters, including current density, Fe 3+ concentration, EDDS to Fe 3+ molar ratio, and PS dosage, on PNZ degradation was evaluated and optimized. Both hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 ●– ) were considered major reactive species responsible for PNZ degradation. To understand the mechanistic model of action at the molecular level, the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of the reactions between PNZ with •OH and SO 4 ●– were theoretically calculated using a density functional theory (DFT) method. The results revealed that radical adduct formation (RAF) is the most favorable pathway for the •OH-driven oxidation of PNZ, while single electron transfer (SET) appears to be the dominant pathway for the reaction of SO 4 ●– with PNZ. In total, thirteen oxidation intermediates were identified, and hydroxylation, pyrazole ring opening, dephenylization, and demethylation were speculated to be the major degradation pathways. Furthermore, predicted toxicity to aquatic organisms indicated that PNZ degradation resulted in products that were less harmful. However, the developmental toxicity of PNZ and its intermediate products should be further investigated in the environment. The findings of this work demonstrate the viability of effectively removing organic contaminants in water at near-neutral pH by using EDDS chelation combined with electrochemistry in a Fe 3+ /persulfate system.

This work reports a simple, low cost and eco-friendly one-step hydrothermal method to obtain Si- and N-doped carbon quantum dots (Si-N-CQDs) using only citric acid and (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane. These codoped Si-N-CQDs demonstrated 0D spherical morphology and an average size of ∼ 2.54 nm as well as good solubility in water and high quantum yield equal to 14.3%. Fluorescence emission of these Si-N-CQDs was quenched selectively under the presence of Fe 3 + . Based on this property, we developed a very sensitive sensor capable of detecting Fe 3 + up to 400 μ M concentration with a 3.14 μ M detection limit. This sensor was used for Fe 3 + detection in real tap and lake water and demonstrated satisfactory recovery equal to 102.3–108.0% and 103.5–108.5%, respectively. Photocatalytic activity of our Si-N-CQDs was demonstrated using methylene blue (MB) organic dye. The degradation rate of MB under visible light irradiation increased 2.7 times under the presence of Si-N-CQDs within 60 min. Such excellent performance was attributed to very efficient light absorption of Si-N-CQDs as well as excellent electron transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers.

Owing to the excellent stability, biocompatibility and photoluminescence property, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are emerging as a kind of potential materials to be applied in a series of fields ranging from sensor to drug delivery. As the growing concern for human and environmental safety, selective detection of metal ions has been paid more and more attention. GQDs, as nanoparticles with superior optical properties, have been attracting growing attention in the field of metal ions detection. In this work, glutathione(GSH) functionalized boron doped graphene quantum dots (B-GQDs@GSH) were successfully synthesized with stable bright blue fluorescence and has been used for the detection of Fe 3+ . A good linear relationship between 1/( F 0 ‒ F ) and 1/ c with the concentration ranging from 0.70 to 53 μmol/L was obtained with a detection limit of 5.5 nmol/L. The application of B-GQDs@GSH for Fe 3+ detection in water samples was demonstrated and the quenching mechanism was further explored. Due to low cytotoxicity and favorable biocompatibility, B-GQDs@GSH were successfully applied for cell fluorescence imaging and intracellular determination of Fe 3+ .

It is of great significance for improving the electron transmission performance of graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) by an economical method. Herein, urea was mixed with tourmaline (TM) and calcined to obtain g-C 3 N 4 /TM composite photocatalyst . Under solar light, g-C 3 N 4 /TM activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) entirely within 25 min. g-C 3 N 4 /TM had a superior photocatalytic oxidation performance under solar light than g-C 3 N 4 . Photogenerated electron-hole pairs of g-C 3 N 4 were efficaciously suppressed, originating from the more excellent electronic transfer to TM. Four active species, including SO 4 • - , •OH, 1 O 2 , and O 2 • - , were identified for the degradation of CBZ. Ten intermediates of CBZ and six intermediates of sulfaquinoxaline sodium (SQXNa) were determined by using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a high definition mass spectrometer (UPLC-HDMS), and a degradation pathway was proposed. As the reaction progressed, all aromatic nuclear intermediates were mineralized. The degradation of other organic pollutants by the g-C 3 N 4 /TM/PMS system validated the universal adaptability in practical applications. This research provided an effective way to improve the g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic activity in wastewater treatment.

Detecting abnormal levels of folic acid (FA), Fe 3+ , and Ca 2+ in the human body is crucial due to their association with various diseases. Orange peel carbon quantum dots (OP-CQDs) with blue fluorescence (λ ex = 370 nm, λ em = 440 nm) were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method when waste biomass orange peel was utilized as the carbon source. An “on-off” fluorescence sensor, referred to as OP-CQDs-FA-Fe 3+ /Ca 2+ , was developed for quantitative analysis of the drug FA, as well as the metal ions Fe 3+ and Ca 2+ . Additionally, the sensor was utilized for fluorescence imaging of HepG 2 liver cancer cells, demonstrating its exceptional biocompatibility. The concentration of FA displayed a linear relationship in the range of 5.00–90.00 μmol L −1 and 0.30–2.50 mmol L −1 , with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.15 μmol L −1 . The spiked recovery in folic acid tablets ranged from 95.70% to 104.50%. The addition of Fe 3+ or Ca 2+ leads to a reduction or restoration of the fluorescence intensity in the OP-CQDs-FA system, resulting in an “on-off” sensor mode. The spiked recoveries in human serum samples were 100.15%–100.48% for Fe 3+ and 98.05%–98.18% for Ca 2+ . This study highlights the considerable potential of OP-CQDs for ion detection, drug analysis, and cell imaging .

The rapid, efficient, and low-cost detection of heavy metal ions using sensors has attracted widespread interest from researchers due to the health risks posed by heavy metal pollution. In recent years, single atom nanozymes with uniformly dispersed active centers and precisely designed coordination structures have been developed and used for the rational construction of various sensors. However, there is a lack of technology available to detect heavy metal ions using the catalytic activity of nanozymes. In this study, we investigated the oxidase-like (OXD-like) catalytic activity of the single atom Ce-N-C (SACe-N-C) prepared in our previous studies. Notably, we found that both Fe3+ and Cr6+ could significantly enhance the electron conversion rates of Ce3+ and Ce4+ within the SACe-N-C nanozyme, which contributed to the OXD-like activity of the nanozyme. Therefore, we constructed a time-resolved sensor to detect Fe3+ and Cr6+ using the oxidative activity of the SACe-N-C nanozyme. The LOD for Fe3+ was 34.72 ng mL−1 in the linear range of 0.25–1.5 μg mL−1, and the recoveries were in the range of 88.66–113.24%. The LOD for Cr6+ was 93.65 ng mL−1 in the linear range of 0.5–5 μg mL−1, and the recoveries were in the range of 85.49–111.22%. The sensor could rapidly detect Fe3+ and Cr6+ at 30 s and 60 s, respectively. This study provides a promising time-resolved strategy for the rapid detection of Fe3+ and Cr6+ in food using the OXD-like catalytic properties of the SACe-N-C nanozyme.

The conductive skeleton and aligned carbon nanotube array (CNTA) structure can greatly shorten the ion transfer path and promote the charge transfer speed, which makes the CNTA an ideal electrode material for energy storage application. However, poor mechanical stability and low specific capacitance greatly impede its practical utilization. Here, we introduce a promising flexible electrode material based on the natural spider silk protein (SSP) modified CNTA(SSP/CNTA) with improved hydrophilicity and mechanical flexibility. The redox-active Fe3+ doped SSP/CNTA flexible solid-state supercapacitor (FSSC) device with superior energy storage performance was assembled in a symmetric 'sandwich-type' structure. The synergetic interaction between Fe3+ ions and the SSP are proved to greatly enhance the electrochemical performance especially the long-term cyclic stability. The Fe3+ doped SSP/CNTA FSSCs device achieves an ultra-high volumetric capacitance of 4.92 F cm−3 at a sweep speed of 1 mV s−1. Meanwhile it exhibited an excellent cycling stability with an increased capacitance by 10% after 10 000 charge–discharge cycles. As a control, a Fe3+ doped CNTA composite device without SSP will lose over 74% of the capacitance after 10 000 cycles. The energy storage mechanism analysis confirms the dominated capacitive behavior of the device, which explained a considerable power density and rate performance. Our method thus provides a promising strategy to build up highly-efficient redox-enhanced FSSCs for next generation of wearable and implantable electronics.

This study designed a “turn-off–on” fluorescence analysis method based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to detect metal ions and amino acids in real sample systems. CQDs were derived from green pomelo peel via a one-step hydrothermal process. The co-doped CQDs with N and S atoms imparted excellent optical properties (quantum yield = 17.31%). The prepared CQDs could be used as fluorescent “turn-off” probes to detect Fe3+with a limit of detection of 0.086 µM, a linear detection range of 0.1–160 µM, and recovery of 83.47–106.53% in water samples. The quenched CQD fluorescence could be turned on after adding L-cysteine (L-Cys), which allowed detection of L-Cys with a detection limit of 0.34 µM and linear range of 0.4–85 µM. Recovery of L-Cys in amino acid beverage was 87.08–122.74%. Visual paper-based testing strips and cellulose/CQDs composite hydrogels could be also used to detect Fe3+and L-Cys.Keywords:carbon quantum dots;turn-off–on;pomelo peel;fluorescence probe;Fe3+;L-cysteine
