Gas–liquid–solid (G–L–S) three-phase slug flow provides an efficient pathway to utilize solid catalysts in continuous flow and was adopted in the mesoporous graphite carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4)-catalyzed photoinduced electron/energy transfer reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in this work. Kinetic studies and chain extension experiments illustrated the realization of reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) and the “easy to scale up” advantage of a continuous-flow reactor as compared to its batch counterpart. The light intensity played an important role on the PET-RAFT polymerization. An increasing amount of photocatalyst favored the monomer conversion within a limited range due to higher light blockage, and the monomer conversion reached a stable level at a lower catalyst concentration when higher light power was applied. When compared with fully continuous flow, the G–L–S slug flow was beneficial to the PET-RAFT polymerization due to the intensified swirling strength and narrower velocity field. Decreasing the gas-to-slurry ratio also led to narrower velocity distribution, which favored the polymerization as well. Moreover, the polymerization rates remained stable in multiple recycles, demonstrating that the present G–L–S slug flow was a reliable and easy processing approach for utilizing the solid catalyst.

Simultaneous detection of multi-biomarkers not only enhances the accuracy of disease diagnosis but also improves detection efficiency and reduces cost. It is vital to achieve portable, simple, low-cost, and simultaneous detection of biomarkers for point-of-care (POC) diagnostics in a low-resource setting. Herein, a multichannel paper chip-based gas pressure bioassay was developed for the simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers by combining multichannel paper chips with a portable gas pressure meter. Four DNA tetrahedral probes (DTPs) were used as capture probes and were immobilized in different detection zones of the paper chips to improve hybridization efficiency and reduce nonspecific adsorption. The formation of a sandwich structure between target microRNAs (miRNAs), the capture probe, and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs)-modified complementary DNA (PtNPs-cDNA) transformed biomolecular recognition into quantitative detection of gas pressure. Four lung cancer-related miRNAs were detected simultaneously by a portable gas pressure meter. There is a good linear relationship between gas pressure and the logarithm of miRNA concentration in the range of 10 pM to 100 nM. Compared with single-stranded DNA capture probe, the signal-to-noise (S/N) of DNA tetrahedral probes improved more than 3 times. Using ring-oven washing, the unbound reagents in all channels of the paper chip were simultaneously and continuously washed away, leading to a more cheap, simple, and fast separation than magnetic separation. Therefore, it offers a promising multichannel paper chip-based gas pressure bioassay for portable and simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers.

Monitoring the concentration of useful biomarkers via electronic skins (e-skins) is highly important for the development of wearable health management systems. While some biosensor e-skins with high flexibility, sensitivity, and stability have been developed, little attention has been paid to their long-term comfortability and optical transparency. Here, a conformable, gas permeable, and transparent skin-like Cu 2 O@Ni micromesh structural glucose monitoring patch is reported. With its self-supporting micromesh structure, the skin-like glucose monitoring patch exhibits excellent shape conformability, high gas permeability, and high optical transmittance. The skin-like glucose biosensor achieves real-time monitoring of glucose concentrations with high sensitivity (15 420 µA cm − 2 mM − 1 ), low detection limit (50 nM), fast response time (<2 s), high selectivity, and long-term stability. These desirable performance properties arise from the synergistic effects of the self-supporting micromesh configuration, high conductivity of the metallic Ni micromesh, and high electrocatalytic activities of the Cu 2 O toward glucose. This work presents a versatile and efficient strategy for constructing conformable, gas permeable, and transparent biosensor e-skins with excellent practicability towards wearable electronics.

The efficient capture of SO 2 using porous adsorbents is of great significance in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process as the reversible physical adsorption can avoid solvents/water consumption and minimize waste generation. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are interesting and promising candidates to sequestrate SO 2 in flue gas as their high porosities, regular pore sizes and easy functionalization. However, the coordination bond nature of MOFs makes stably and persistently capture acidic SO 2 gas remains a challenge in MOF. Herein, an aliphatic amine decorating strategy was introduced in a MOF (MIL-101(Cr)) with open metal sites for reversible and durable SO 2 capture. The successful synthesis of N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine (mmen) decorated MIL-101(Cr) named mmen-MIL-101(Cr), was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectra (EDS) and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm. Compared with chemisorption of SO 2 on open Cr sites in MIL-101(Cr), the SO 2 adsorption sites are transferred from Cr to N atom in mmen-MIL-101(Cr), leading to reversible SO 2 adsorption and desorption. The dipole–dipole interaction between N atom and S(SO 2 ) atom, combining with hydrogen bonding interaction between O(SO 2 ) and H in mmen can increase the SO 2 absorption capacity of mmen-MIL-101(Cr) under low SO 2 partial pressure. The SO 2 adsorption capacity and cycle stability properties were studied in detail by adsorption isotherm and dynamic breakthrough measurement. An unprecedented high SO 2 adsorb capacity (upto 4.27 mmol·g −1 ) at SO 2 partial pressure (0.5 mbar) is achieved in mmen-MIL-101(Cr), which is a great improvement compared to 2.92 mmol·g −1 SO 2 adsorption capacity for primordial MIL-101(Cr) under the same condition. Moreover, mmen-MIL-101(Cr) manifests reversible SO 2 adsorption–desorption performance while MIL-101(Cr) gradually loses its adsorption capacity during dynamic breakthrough cycles. The high SO 2 sorption capacity in low partial pressure and impressive cycle stability of mmen-MIL-101(Cr) demonstrate aliphatic amine decorating strategy is an efficient way to improve MOF’s SO 2 capture capability, which also can extend to other porous adsorbents for low concentration FGD process.

An analytical method was developed to quantitatively determine residual monomers, namely, lactide (LA) and ε -caprolactone (CL), in poly(lactide- co - ε -caprolactone) (PLCL) using an internal-standard method of gas chromatography (GC). PLCL and diphenyl ether (DPE) as an internal standard were initially dissolved in dichloromethane (DCM), and then PLCL was precipitated in cyclohexane. The residual LA and CL monomers in PLCL, as well as DPE, were extracted into cyclohexane from the polymer solution. The resulting solution was directly injected into a GC system. This method was practical for measuring the residual LA and CL contents in PLCL. The relative standard deviation ( RSD ) ( n = 5) denoting the repeatability of this method was less than 5.6% and 4.3% for the LA and CL measurements, respectively, indicating that the method was sufficiently precise. The recovery rate of standard addition was 96.5%–101.5% and 98.4%–104.2% for the determination of LA and CL in PLCL, respectively. The RSD of the recovery of standard addition ( n = 5) was not more than 2.0%, indicating that the method was sufficiently accurate.

Recently, the influence of polar facets on the gas sensing performance of metal oxides has drawn much attention, yet the facet-dependent gas sensing properties of rare earth oxides have not been reported so far. In this work, taking CeO 2 as an example, uniform single-crystalline nanopolyhedra, nanorods and nanocubes of cubic CeO 2 were selectively prepared by a hydrothermal method at different temperatures and NaOH concentrations, using Ce(NO 3 ) 3 as the cerium source. According to X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis, these CeO 2 nanocrystals possess different exposed crystal planes: {111} and {100} for nanopolyhedra, {110} and {100} for nanorods, and {100} for nanocubes. Abundant defects were confirmed on the surface of three CeO 2 nanocrystals by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and photoluminescence (PL). Notably, gas sensors based on these three CeO 2 nanocrystals exhibited distinct response values towards dimethylamine vapor in the following order: nanocubes > nanorods > nanopolyhedra, while excluding the effects of characteristic dimension and specific surface area. The response order of CeO 2 nanocrystals is primarily ascribed to the different content of surface defects and {100} polar facets instead of {111} and {110} nonpolar facets.

CO2enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technology is a competitive strategy to improve oil field economic returns and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the arbitrary emissions or combustion of the associated gas, which mainly consists of CO2and CH4, will cause the aggravation of the greenhouse effect and a huge waste of resources. In this paper, the high-performance facilitated transport multilayer composite membrane for CO2/CH4separation was prepared by individually adjusting the membrane structure of each layer. The effect of test conditions on the CO2/CH4separation performance was systematically investigated. The membrane exhibits high CO2permeance of 3.451 × 10−7mol·m−2·s−1·Pa−1and CO2/CH4selectivity of 62 at 298 K and 0.15 MPa feed gas pressure. The cost analysis was investigated by simulating the two-stage system. When the recovery rate and purity of CH4are 98%, the minimum specific cost of separating CO2/CH4(45/55 vol%) can be reduced to 0.046$·Nm−3CH4. The excellent short-to-mid-term stability indicates the great potential of large industrial application in the CH4recovery and CO2reinjection from oilfield associated gas. Keywords:oilfield associated gas;CO2capture;multilayer composite membrane;facilitated transport;CO2/CH4separation

As ecological pollution and resource waste caused by NH 3 emission become increasingly serious, thus the separation and recovery of NH 3 from exhausted gases is of great significance both for environment and economy. Herein, we present a kind of novel ionic liquids (ILs)-based hybrid membranes for efficient NH 3 separation. Protic ILs (PILs) are adopted to form self-assembled gas highways in the hybrid membranes with the nanostructures of a middle-sulfonated pentablock copolymer, exhibiting extremely high NH 3 affinity and gas diffusion. The highest NH 3 permeability and ideal NH 3 /N 2 selectivity is up to 2711 Barrer and 1407 at ambient temperature and 1 bar, much superior to the state-of-the-art membranes reported. The results indicated that the novel IL-based hybrid membranes are promising candidates for high-efficient NH 3 separation and purification.

A simple and effective method was conducted for preparing microdispersed droplets with decreased size and increased uniformity, in which phase inversion in high-phase-ratio liquid/liquid system was combined with addition of microbubbles. Five typical flow patterns were observed, including W/O, O/W/O, transition regime, O/W and G/W/O regimes. Flow regime transition was observed, according to which physical properties of systems and operating conditions for preparing single-oil-droplet-in-water emulsion were determined in different liquid/liquid and gas/liquid/liquid modes. Effects of liquid viscosities as well as interfacial tension on droplet size ( D O ) and its standard deviation (SD) were studied systematically and the most effective gas/liquid/liquid mode was recommended. Mathematical models were established for correlating D O in five different modes, which show relatively good agreement with experimental results. D O decreases by 42% via introducing phase inversion and further reduces to 25% by addition of microbubbles, both under the same operating conditions.

Partially reduced SnO 2 was prepared by using NaBH 4 as reducer under room temperature. After NaBH 4 treatment, the oxygen vacancy density of SnO 2 was increased greatly. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance indicates that the obtained materials are characteristic of a high concentration of oxygen vacancies. Owing to increased oxygen vacancy concentration, these materials showed significantly high gas-sensing response to ethanol. Compared with the ethanol-sensing response value of 36.9 for pristine SnO 2 towards 300 ppm ethanol, the response value for the partially reduced SnO 2 is 120.3. This ethanol-sensing response enhancement may be attributed to the fact that the increased surface oxygen vacancy facilitates oxygen adsorption, and promotes chemical reaction on the surface.

BACKGROUND At present, much attention has been focused on the development of methane (CH 4 ) sensors due to a series of explosions and fires caused by CH 4 gas leakage. RESULTS Here, a CH 4 thermoelectric gas sensor (TGS) was fabricated by fixing 3D porous palladium/cobalt oxide (Pd/Co 3 O 4 ) catalyst on a commercial thermoelectric module. 3D porous Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation and gel-casting method. The pore structure in catalysts could be tailored only by adjusting the gel viscosity during the formation process. The protocol to tune the pore structure is facile and effective for the improvement of the activity of catalysts. By means of various techniques, the catalysts were characterized and then the possible catalytic mechanism was revealed. The CH 4 TGS based on the optimal Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalyst began to respond at 200 °C, following an obvious output voltage (Δ V ) of 5 mV. Enhancing the operating temperature to 240 °C, the value of Δ V reached to 31 mV and exhibited a linear relationship with CH 4 gas concentration. Meanwhile, the CH 4 TGS showed high sensitivity, repeatability and stability. CONCLUSION The easy and effective preparation method presented to prepare 3D porous Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalyst can provide an unique perspective on the development of 3D porous materials with excellent properties. It can be anticipated that the CH 4 TGS based on the 3D porous Pd/Co 3 O 4 catalyst will be a potential candidate for the detection of CH 4 gas in industrial settings. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

In this paper, the preparation process and gas sensing performance of Sb-doped three-dimensional spinel ferrite (3D ZnFe 2 O 4 ) with well-assembled macroporous spherical structure have been investigated. Sb-doped 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 macroporous spheres (MPs) were prepared through a one-step ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) method by sacrificing self-assembly sulfonated polystyrene spheres (S-PSs). The interconnected macropores (an average pore size about 200 nm) can be observed in the as-prepared materials by SEM and TEM characterization, which provided the dual functions of accelerating the diffusion of gas molecules and providing more reactive sites. The XPS analysis showed that the element Sb existed as Sb 5+ in doped samples. Compared with the pure 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs (response = 18), 0.5 % Sb-doped sample presented the response of 35.5–100 ppm n-butanol at 250 °C, and also revealed excellent selectivity and long-term stability to n-butanol. The greatly enhanced sensing performance of Sb-doped simples can be attributed to the construction of 3D spheres with interconnected macroporous structures and the modification of Sb doping. The formation of p-n junctions at interface through Sb doping also improved the sensing performance for n-butanol. In addition, the relative sensing mechanism of Sb-doped 3D ZnFe 2 O 4 MPs for n-butanol sensing has been discussed in detail.
