As a well-known herb worldwide, rhubarb presents a wide range of pharmacological activities. In our studies, Rheum palmatum L. extracts and five isolated anthraquinones possessed insecticidal activity. The acetone extract (yield, 8.84%), which contained the highest amount of compounds (82.87 mg/g), showed stronger insecticidal activity than did the aqueous extract (yield, 37.17%) and the ethanol extract (yield, 36.92%). Notable amounts of compounds were also found in water extract residues (18.2 mg/g). Among the isolated quinones and structurally related compounds, emodin exhibited the highest insecticidal activity (LC 50 = 84.30 μg/mL) against Nilarparvata lugens ; and very moderate activity against Mythimna separata (LC 50 = 548.74 μg/mL). The LC 50 values of positive agent toosendanin against two insects were 89.34 and 418.24 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, emodin exhibited significant AChE and GST inhibitory activities (with respective IC 50 values of 11.36 and 4.18 μg/mL). Plumbagin exhibited stronger and broader antifungal activity against eight phytopathogenic fungi (with EC 50 values ranging from 2.84 to 10.53 μg/mL) compared to a commercial fungicide, azoxystrobin (EC 50 ranging from 20.40 to >100.00 μg/mL). Plumbagin significantly damaged the cell and mitochondrial membrane systems, changed the morphology, triggered the release of cellular contents and generate reactive oxygen species in Rhizoctonia solani mycelia. This study laid the foundation for the future development of emodin and plumbagin as alternative, environmentally friendly bioinsecticide and biofungicide, respectively. Rhubarb and its residues can be used as renewable sources of anthraquinone-based products.

Combretastatin A4 (CA4) possesses varying ability to cause vascular disruption in tumors, while the short half-life, low water solubility and deactivation of many CA4 analogs during storage limited its antitumor efficacy and drug stability. A novel macromolecular conjugate of CA4 (CA4-PL) was synthesized by covalent bonding of CA4 onto poly( L -glutamic acid)-graft-polyethylene glycol (PLG-g-PEG) via Yamaguchi reaction. The obtained CA4-PL was characterized by 1 H NMR, GPC, and UV methods, and the properties of the nanoparticles composed of CA4-PL, including critical aggregation concentration, size and size distribution, and morphology, were investigated. CA4-PL can self-assemble to form micelle-like nanoparticles of 80~120 nm in diameter, which may have potential to improve the blood circulation period as well as the targetability of CA4, and find applications to treat various tumors when combined with traditional chemotherapy or radio therapy.

BackgroundThe amorphous poly(lactic acid-co-lysine) (PLL) with hydrophilic reactive groups was synthesized by the condensing copolymerization and the blending miscibility of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and PLL was investigated.MethodsThe miscibility of PLLA and PLL was evaluated by analyzing the thermal properties, crystallization behaviors, crystal morphologies and mechanical properties of the PLLA/PLL blends.ResultsThe results indicated that amorphous PLL changed the crystallization behaviors and thermal properties of PLLA, decreasing the crystallinity of PLLA in the blends. The amorphous PLL molecule chains in PLLA/PLL blends were able to enter into the lamellars of PLLA spherulites and affect the crystallization behaviors of PLLA, resulting in imperfect, spherulite structures of PLLA. The formation of hydrogen bonds between PLLA molecular chains and PLL molecular chains enabled partial compatibility in this blend system.ConclusionsThe existence of PLL improved the hydrophility of PLLA/PLL blends, led to a higher content of PLL in the PLLA/PLL blend system, and better hydrophilic properties of the blend system. The PLL was partially miscible with the PLLA, and the PLLA/PLL blend with 10 wt% PLL had improved tensile properties.

The wide occurrence and high environmental concentration of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO 2 ) have raised concerns about their potential toxic effects on crops. In this study, we employed a GC-MS-based metabolomic approach to investigate the potential toxicity of nano-TiO 2 on hydroponically-cultured rice ( Oryza sativa L.) after exposed to 0, 100, 250 or 500 mg/L of nano-TiO 2 for fourteen days. Results showed that the biomass of rice was significantly decreased and the antioxidant defense system was significantly disturbed after exposure to nano-TiO 2 . One hundred and five identified metabolites showed significant difference compared to the control, among which the concentrations of glucose-6-phosphate, glucose-1-phosphate, succinic and isocitric acid were increased most, while the concentrations of sucrose, isomaltulose, and glyoxylic acid were decreased most. Basic energy-generating ways including tricarboxylic acid cycle and the pentose phosphate pathway, were elevated significantly while the carbohydrate synthesis metabolism including starch and sucrose metabolism, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism were inhibited. However, the biosynthetic formation of most of the identified fatty acids, amino acids and secondary metabolites which correlated to crop quality, were increased. The results suggest that the metabolism of rice plants is distinctly disturbed after exposure to nano-TiO 2 , and nano-TiO 2 would have a mixed effect on the yield and quality of rice.

L-cysteine (Cys) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were successfully linked onto the cotton fabric surfaces. The Cys molecules were covalently linked to the cotton fibers via esterification with the cellulose hydroxyl groups, and the Ag NPs tightly adhered to the fiber surface via coordination bonds with the Cys thiol groups. As a result, the Ag NPs coating on the cotton fabric showed an excellent antibacterial function with an outstanding laundering durability. The bacterial reduction rates (BR) efficiency reached 100 % for Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). After 50 consecutive laundering cycles, the bacterial reduction rates (BR) against E. coli and S. aureus were maintained over 97 %. It has potential applications in a wide variety of fields such as sportswear, socks, and medical textile.

The effects of graphene oxide (GO) with polar groups and functionalized GO (fGO) with nonpolar groups on the isothermal crystallization of poly( L -lactide) (PLLA) were compared. Functionalized GO was obtained by grafting octadecylamine and characterized by FTIR, WAXD and TGA. Isothermal crystallization kinetics of PLLA/GO and PLLA/fGO nanocomposites were investigated by combining DSC data and Avrami equation. The results showed that fGO could improve PLLA crystallization rate more obviously than GO. By analyzing the morphology obtained from POM, SEM and TEM, it was found fGO with large layer space dispersed better in PLLA and supplied more nucleation sites than GO. Therefore, for the multilayer graphene, increasing the layer spaces is important to improve its dispersion in polymers, which will cause the crystal kinetics changing of polymers.

A chemodosimeter-based fluorescent detection method coupled with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) extraction was developed for determination of l -cysteine ( l -Cys) by combining molecular imprinting technique with fluorescent chemodosimeter. The MIPs prepared by precipitation polymerization with l -Cys as template, possessed high specific surface area of 145 m 2 /g and good thermal stability without decomposition lower than 300 °C, and were successfully applied as an adsorbent with excellent selectivity for l -Cys over other amino acids, and enantioselectivity was also demonstrated. A novel chemodosimeter, rhodamine B1, was synthesized for discriminating l -Cys from its structurally similar homocysteine and glutathione as well as various possibly co-existing biospecies in aqueous solutions with notable fluorescence enhancement when adding l -Cys. As l -Cys was added with increasing concentrations, an emission band peaked at 580 nm occurred and significantly increased in fluorescence intensity , by which the l -Cys could be sensed optically. High detectability up to 12.5 nM was obtained. An excellent linearity was found within the wide range of 0.05–50 μM ( r =0.9996), and reasonable relative standard deviations ranging from 0.3% to 3.5% were attained. Such typical features as high selectivity, high sensitivity, easy operation and low cost enabled this MIPs-fluorometry to be potentially applicable for routine detection of trace l -Cys.

Two amino acid-functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives, poly(N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-L-leucyl(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2′-yl)methylamide) (PEDOT–Boc–Leu) and poly(L-leucyl(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2′-yl)methylamide) (PEDOT–Leu) were synthesized electrochemically via potentiostatic polymerization of corresponding monomers N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)L-leucyl(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2′-yl)methylamide (EDOT–Boc–Leu) and L-leucyl(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2′-yl)methylamide (EDOT–Leu), which were synthesized by grafting Boc-L-leucine and L-leucine into a 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) side chain. The electrochemical behaviors, structural characterization, circular dichroism, spectroscopic properties, surface morphology, electrochromic properties and thermal stabilities of PEDOT–Boc–Leu and PEDOT–Leu films were systematically investigated. These L-leucine grafted PEDOT derivatives displayed excellent reversible redox activities, rough and compact surface, and good thermal stability. The circular dichroism spectra suggested the chirality of these polymers. Importantly, the introduction of the L-leucine group enhanced the electrochromic properties of PEDOT and resulted in high contrast ratios (ΔT% = 49% at 600 nm for PEDOT–Boc–Leu) and high coloration efficiencies (431 cm2 C−1 at 960 nm for PEDOT–Leu). Satisfactory results implied that the obtained polymer films can probably be further developed in various applications, such as electrochromic devices, optical displays and chiral recognition.

The dispersion polymerization of poly (L-lactide)(PLLA) in supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO 2 ) with stannous octoate (Sn(Oct) 2 ) as a catalyst and n-butanol as an initiator was studied. An amphiphilic triblock copolymer was synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization ofε-caprolactone (ε-CL) with the hydroxylpropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS) as the macromolecule initiator and then chosen as the stabilizer in the synthesis of PLLA. With the concentrations of 3 wt % (stabilizer/monomer), fine powder formed PLLAs were obtained. The effects of operating parameters such as pressure, temperature and stirring rate on the properties of the synthesized PLLAs were investigated. The results showed that the temperature had the greatest effect on the conversion and the stirring rate was the most important factor which determined the morphology of the products. An obvious increase of conversion was observed when the temperature increased from 80 °C to 100 °C. The influence of stirring rate on the morphology was achieved through the anchoring of the stabilizer with the growing polymer chains. The stirring rate of 300 rpm was turned out to be necessary and adequate. When the stirring rate increased or decreased out of the range of (300 ± 100)rpm, only agglomerates were obtained.

Introduction: This study aimed to establish a fermentation system based on Lactobacillus casei (LC) and Arctium lappa L. root (AR) to investigate its effects. The objectives included comparing metabolite profiles pre- and post-fermentation using untargeted metabolomics and evaluating the impact of LC-AR in high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic mice. Methods: Untargeted metabolomics was used to analyze differences in metabolites before and after fermentation. In vitro antioxidant activity, liver injury, lipid levels, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and cholesterol-related mRNA expression were assessed. 16S rRNA sequencing was conducted to evaluate changes in gut microbiota composition. Results: LC-AR exhibited stronger antioxidant activity and higher metabolite levels than AR. It also improved liver injury as well as better regulation of lipid levels, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and cholesterol-related mRNA. 16S rRNA analysis revealed that LC-AR decreased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, which correlated negatively with triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.Discussion: These findings suggest that LC-AR may serve as a promising functional food and drug raw material for improving hyperlipidemia, particularly through its beneficial effects on gut microbiota and lipid regulation.

Microorganisms play important roles in the remediation of contaminated soil. However, the relationship between the soil microbial communities and herbicide degradation remains unclear after applying green manure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of green manure on soil physicochemical properties, between acetochlor degradation and microbial communities. Adoption of pot experiments, the effects and mechanism of four fertilization treatments (CK: without green manure; GMV: Vicia villosa Roth; GML: Lolium perenne L.; GMR: Raphanus stativus L.) on the degradation of acetochlor were evaluated. Appling to Raphanus stativus L., acetochlor degraded in 5.82 days, which was 74.81 % higher than that of CK. Community differences in soil microbes were analysed using high-throughput sequencing. The predominant phyla of fungi were Ascomyocta , Mortierellomycota , Basidiomycota , unclassified_k_Fungi, and Chytridiomycota , which accounted for 85.01 %–116.46 % of the fungal OTUs. The green manure treatment showed higher abundance of Mortierella (9.54 %–13.05 %), diversity of saprotrophic fungi and symbiotic fungi and faster rate of degradation of acetochlor as compared to CK. In addition, soil properties such as soil total phosphorus (TP) and pH have significant effects on microorganisms. Fungal functional analysis revealed that the microorganisms associated with acetochlor biodegradation mainly belonged to Ascomycota and Glomeromycota . This study offers new insights into the relationship between soil properties and the environmental risks associated with the presence of pesticides in soil and the related mechanisms.

A feasible and practicable “off–on” type of fluorescence strategy for highly selective screening of L-selenium-methylselenocysteine (L-SeMC) in selenium-enriched Cardamine violifolia was developed using g-C3N4-MnO2 nanocomposites as fluorescent probes. The g-C3N4 nanosheets can emit blue fluorescence at 320 nm excitation wavelength with a fluorescence quantum yield of 28%. When MnO2 was deposited onto g-C3N4 nanosheets, the fluorescence of the g-C3N4 nanosheets was quenched due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). After the addition of L-SeMC, MnO2 was reduced to Mn2+, which eliminated FRET and fluorescence was restored. Based on this, a quantitative method for the determination of L-SeMC was established. The fluorescence intensity of g-C3N4-MnO2 nanocomposites showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of L-SeMC in the range of 0–45 μg mL−1, the limit of detection (LOD, 3σ/K) was 8.25 ng mL−1 and the correlation coefficient was 0.9904. Common selenium compounds such as SeO2, Na2SeO3, SeMet and SeCys caused weak fluorescence intensity, which means that the developed method is highly selective to detect L-SeMC in a series of selenium compounds. Meanwhile, the technique was evaluated by spiking L-SeMC standards in C. violifolia extraction solutions and with 9 C. violifolia extraction specimens, receiving excellent accordance with results from the commercially available atomic fluorescence spectroscopy method.
