The Li–O2 battery based on the polymer electrolyte has been considered as the feasible solution to the safety issue derived from the liquid electrolyte. However, the practical application of the polymer electrolyte-based Li–O2 battery is impeded by the poor cyclability and unsatisfactory energy efficiency caused by the structure of the porous cathode. Herein, an architecture of a composite cathode with improved oxidation kinetics of discharge products was designed by an in situ method through the polymerization of the electrolyte precursor for the polymer-based Li–O2 battery. The composite cathode can provide sufficient gas diffusion channels, abundant reaction active sites, and continuous pathways for ion diffusion and electron transport. Furthermore, the oxidation kinetics of nanosized discharge products formed in the composite cathode can be improved by hexamethylphosphoramide during the recharge process. The polymer-based Li–O2 batteries with the composite cathode demonstrate highly reversible capacity when fully charged and a long cycle lifetime under a fixed capacity with low overpotentials. Moreover, the interface contact between hexamethylphosphoramide and the Li metal can be stabilized simultaneously. Therefore, the composite cathode architecture designed in this work shows a promising application in high-performance polymer-based Li–O2 batteries.

Micronano porous Mo 2 C@C nanorods (NRs) composite anodes are successfully synthesized using the raw materials of MoO 3 NRs, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer, and inactive sodium chloride (NaCl) microparticles. The abundant and soluble NaCl microparticles act as the sacrificial templates, which increase the surface contact area between the MoO 3 NRs and the PAN polymer, thus promoting the thorough formation of Mo 2 C electrodes during the carbonization process. The optimized Mo 2 C@C-template (MCC-T) NR composite electrodes deliver an enhanced electrochemical performance, which is ascribed to the enlarged surface area, reduced path distance of lithium ions, and structural stability. In addition, the Li-ion storage mechanism and the electrochemical kinetics of Mo 2 C@C NR composite anodes are also systemically and experimentally investigated by ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. This synthetic strategy for MCC-T NR composite anodes is helpful to design other nanostructured carbide anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

It is believed that the construction of a well-hybridized and nanoscale SnS 2 -rGO interconnection would make Li + diffusion distance shorter, cycle performance stable and high-rate property remarkable application in the LIBs anodes. Here, a novel SnS 2 /rGO aerogel with ultrathin SnS 2 nanosheets, well-hybridized networks, and desirable covalent-bonded interconnection was successfully prepared by a modified one-step hydrothermal method. The aerogels were used for anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIB), and exhibited a remarkable electrochemical performance, including an ultra-high initial specific capacity (1682 mAh g −1 ), excellent rate performance (474 mAh g −1 at the rate of 10 A g −1 ), and perfect cycle stability (1388.4 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 ), superior to those of previous reports. It is obvious that the aerogel’s well-hybridized and covalent-bonded networks, super stable and intact structure, and improved electron conductivity would play a very important role during charging/discharging of the improved Li + transportation. Therefore, the SnS 2 /rGO aerogel materials created by us would be a very promising candidate for future advanced lithium-storage-type power sources.

Lithium (Li) metal and alloy anodes are strongly attractive for next high-energy-density batteries , owing to their high theoretical specific capacity and low redox potentials . However, the fast electrode pulverization caused by large volume variation upon cycling inhibits the use of the Li metal and alloy anodes seriously, whereas the sluggish charge transfer and weak electrode/electrolyte interphase are mainly responsible for their uneven volume expansion and surface breaks, respectively. Herein, a versatile F–N–S doped lithiophilic interphase is obtained via a one-pot electrochemical fabrication process with high controllability, which exhibits high robustness, Li affinity and fast Li transfer, and significantly outperforms the single lithiophilic interphase obtained via chemical route. When this advanced interphase is applied to the copper or aluminum electrodes, great stabilizations of Li plating/stripping or Li insertion/extraction processes can be achieved. This work emphasizes the importance of the interphase composition for designing stable high-energy-density electrodes, and gives insights on a general and efficient remedy to boost the performances of the large-volume-change electrodes.

With high theoretical capacity (926 mAh g −1 ) and safer voltage platform, Iron phosphide (FeP) as an anode material for lithium ion batteries has attracted a lot of attention. However, FeP also suffers serious capacity fading and unsatisfied rate capability, which are triggered by inferior intrinsic conductivity and large volume expansion. Herein, oriented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, MOF-derived porous FeP nanorods modified by abundant P vacancies (denoted as V-FeP) were ingeniously designed via a simplified approach to alleviate the above obstacles. As a result, the V-FeP nanorods electrode delivered extraordinary specific capacity (1228.3 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 120 cycles) and long-cyclic performance (590.7 mAh g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 after 1000 cycles). Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure, electron paramagnetic resonance and so on were used to character the V-FeP nanorods. The results indicated the supernormal electrochemical performances of V-FeP nanorods were originated from abundant P vacancies and good distribution of FeP nanoparticles in conductive carbon network, which enhanced electrical conductivity, provided more active sites, shortened the diffusion distances of Li ions and relieved the volume variations. The strategy demonstrates a further direction to effectively improve the lithium storage performance of transition metal phosphides.

Two-dimensional materials with optical turnability have wide prospect in related applications such as electrochromic coating and thermal camouflage. Here we report a Li-intercalated ultrathin graphite device with tunable visible-near-infrared reflectivity . After Li-ion intercalation, the Fermi surface of ultrathin graphite will move to a higher level, which prevents the interband optical transitions below it. Therefore, it is possible to change the absorptivity or emissivity of ultrathin graphite through reversible Li-ion intercalation, which accomplishes the modification to reflectivity indirectly. In our experiment, the strong fluorescence background and Peak shifts in Raman spectra , as well as the enlarged layer spacing in XRD spectra, together confirmed that Li-ions were successfully intercalated into the graphite layers. The relative reflectivity of ultrathin graphite increased sharply in a wide range from 460 nm to 1500 nm after complete Li-ion intercalation. At a typical near-infrared wavelength 1500 nm for instance, the relative reflectivity is 0.28 for pristine graphite while 0.70 for fully lithiated graphite. Such reversible intercalated modulation in visible-near-infrared reflectivity of ultrathin graphite might provide a new way to design electrochromic coating, thermal camouflage or radar stealth systems, which also promotes further understanding and optical applications of graphene and other 2D materials.

Cattail is widely abounding in wetlands and marshes and is usually considered as an abundant and inexpensive biomass lignocellulose resource due to its rapid growth. In this paper, a novel cellulose (named as TOCF) separator for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is successfully fabricated from cattail fibers by 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation and vacuum filtration. The proposed TOCF membrane shows good tensile strength (75 MPa), superior thermal dimensional stability, sufficient porosity (64.8%), outstanding liquid electrolyte uptake (323%) as well as large ionic conductivity (2.83 mS cm −1 ). Moreover, the Li/LiFePO 4 cell assembled using the TOCF separator demonstrates better discharge capacity and cycling stability than the cell with a commercial Celgard separator. Thus, the TOCF separator is a promising and low-cost candidate used in high-performance LIBs.

The silicon based composite Si/Cu-Zn(ox)/C was prepared by ball milling from Si microparticles , Cu-Zn nanopowder heated at air and carbon black. The composite is formed by Si submicrometer particles, Cu-rich Cu x Zn, CuO , ZnO and C nanoparticles . The two oxides are electrochemically active during the first discharge, improving the nanostructuration of the composite and providing Cu nanoparticles that enhance the electronic conductivity with Cu x Zn and C. The nanostructuration helps to buffer the volume variations due to Li-Si alloying reactions during cycling. The composite is further nanostructured during the first cycles as shown by XRD and electrochemical measurements. The material was tested as anode material for Li-ion batteries, providing a reversible capacity of 800 mAh.g −1 during 100 cycles at current of 300 mA.g −1 and a good rate capability. The reversible capacity is mainly due to Li-Si alloying reactions and is stable after few cycles while the solid electrolyte interphase is stabilized after about ten cycles as shown by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy .

Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted extensive attention in the past decades owing to their high theoretical energy density, low-cost and eco-friendliness. However, poorly cycling stability and rapidly decay caused by shuttle effects at high-sulfur loading condition restrain their practical applications. Focusing on these issues, N-doped hollow porous carbon nanotubes (N-HPCNT) as a self-supporting sulfur cathode is developed. The inherent conductivity and abundant pores of 3D continuous framework not only allow a high-sulfur content (67 wt%) and block the polysulfides via physical confinement, but also trap the polysulfides by the nitrogen heteroatoms (4.60 wt%) via strong chemisorption . Benefiting from the above-mentioned merits, the self-supporting S/N-HPCNT cathode with 3 mg cm −2 sulfur delivers high reversible capacity, super rate capability (1152 and 852.8 mAh g −1 at 0.2 and 3 C, respectively) and long cycling stability (717.9 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C). Even under a higher sulfur loading (8 mg cm −2 ), it still exhibits a stable areal capacity of 7.72 mAh cm −2 (corresponding to 965.1 mAh g −1 ) after 60 cycles. This work provides a pathway for developing high performance Li–S batteries.

In this work, Li x BiO y compounds were synthesized via a facile calcination method. It was surprising that the as-prepared Li 7 BiO 6 compounds transformed into Li-doping tetragonal Bi 2 O 3 phase after undergoing water washing disposal, which was well verified by combining XRD and HR-TEM. In addition, the energy bandgap of prepared compound was derived based on UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum and results indicate the formation of a lower band gap when increasing Li dopant concentration. Moreover, the Li-doping tetragonal Bi 2 O 3 exhibited high visible light-driven photocatalytic activity and the methylene blue can be well degraded in 10 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was ascribed to the improvement of light response and charge transfer. Our current work will boost the development of photocatalysis and bring insight into other Li x MO 6 (e.g., Li 6 WO 6 , Li 7 TabO 6 , Li 7 NbO 6 , Li 8 ZrO 6 ) compounds to extend their photocatalytic application.

The applications of Li metal anode in next-generation batteries, have been impeded by virtually infinite volume change and inevitable side reactions between Li metal and electrolytes. To address the issues, current collectors have to possess a porous structure and a lithiophilic surface. However, how to achieve a tunable porous structure in a simple and cost-effective way is a great challenge. Here, mechanical pressure is proposed to tune the porosity of surface-oxidized copper foams that realize the tunable porosity and surface affinity to lithium simultaneously. These foams exhibit enhanced electrochemical performances as the host for Li metal anodes. They can run 5000 cycles at 5 mA cm −2 for 1 mAh cm −2 in symmetrical cells, much better than the cases without pressure regulation or without surface oxidization. It is one of the best results reported so far using copper structures as the current collector for Li metal anodes. The full cells paired with LiFePO 4 or with LiNi 0.5 Co 0.3 Mn 0.2 O 2 also demonstrate their advantages than those without surface oxidization or without compression. These results indicate the promising potential of these foams as a host for dendrite-free Li metal anodes.

Taking into account of high energy density and safety, solid-state lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising for next-generation energy storage devices and high-performance power sources, and the inorganic solid electrolyte is a key component in LIBs. Here, a new system of solid oxide electrolyte with a nominal composition of Li 29 Zr 9 Nb 3 O 40 (LZNO) and Al-doped LZNO are prepared through a sol-gel method and the related ionic conductivities are firstly investigated. All the prepared compounds have an orthorhombic structure. The pure LZNO shows a bulk conductivity of 1.75 × 10 −4 S cm −1 and a total conductivity of 5.90 × 10 −5 S cm −1 at 25 °C, and has low activation energy of conduction of 0.20 eV. The Al-doping enhances the total ionic conductivity up to 2.41 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature. The computational simulation by using bond valence site energy reveals that the LZNO crystal has 3D migration pathways including two-dimensional migration pathways along a - and c - orientations, as well as the migration b -direction one provided by the partially occupied O (8) sites.
