In recent years, global warming has precipitated a series of challenges to human living comfort. While some techniques can offer mitigation, their energy-intensive nature renders them unsuitable for widespread adoption in underdeveloped regions. To address these shortcomings, a cost-effective smart window with indoor temperature regulation was developed. It was fabricated by integrating {Mo154} with a blend of polyvinyl alcohol/poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PVA/PNIPAM) hydrogel. Based on the temperature induced phase transformation ability of PNIPAM, the composite hydrogel can be used to regulate the indoor temperature. Concurrently, PVA can mitigate the problem of volume shrinkage from PNIPAM phase transition. More importantly, the {Mo154} can reduce the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of Mo-PVA/PNIPAM hydrogel, as well as provide photothermal properties for intelligently sensing the outside temperature. The smart window can display a favorable sunlight modulation property (ΔTsol = 80.8%) and a rapid heating rate response to light exposure. Due to the presence of the {Mo154}, the smart window became opaque to block sunlight when the indoor temperature exceeded 28.9 oC. This feature can keep indoor cooling in the hot summer without any energy consumption. Moreover, the Mo-PVA/PNIPAM-based smart window also demonstrated favorable durability, maintaining its functionality after 100 times heating (40 oC)-cooling (20 oC) cycles, which can support long time usage and suit for the underdeveloped areas with limited electric energy.

The design of efficient and cost-effective bifunctional catalysts to replace precious metal-based catalysts remains a critical challenge in electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, we report a Mo-Fe co-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanorod arrays grown on a nickel-iron foam substrate via a facile hydrothermal synthesis. This dual metal-doped nanorod structure synergistically modulates the electronic structure while maximizing accessible active sites, endowing the Mo-Fe-Ni 3 S 2 electrode with exceptional bifunctional activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The resulting Mo-Fe-Ni 3 S 2 electrode requires only 180 mV for HER and 275 mV for OER at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , coupled with long-term stability exceeding 50 h. Remarkably, when integrated into a single-stack cell for practical application, the Mo-Fe-Ni 3 S 2 electrode exhibits outstanding performance, achieving a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at a potential of 1.87 V and showing no potential degradation after 100 hours of continuous operation at 100 mA cm −2 . This work not only presents a high-performance bifunctional catalyst but also provides fundamental insights into the design of advanced electrocatalysts through rational heteroatom doping strategies.

The substantial presence of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO 2 ) in outdoor environments detrimentally impacts natural ecosystems and exerts significant influence on urban climates. Conventional NO x treatment methods frequently suffer from challenges such as harsh reaction conditions and high energy consumption. Consequently, the development of advanced photocatalytic systems to efficiently degrade NO x while minimizing the formation of toxic byproducts represents a critical challenge in environmental catalysis. In this study, a novel ternary composite material (5% Mo-CN/InP-NBOC) was constructed via hydrothermal synthesis and surface modification strategies, achieving 42% NO oxidation efficiency under visible light irradiation with a mere 0.9% NO 2 generation rate. This performance demonstrates efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation while effectively suppressing NO 2 production. Systematic characterization techniques, including XRD, TEM, and XPS, confirmed the successful integration of InP quantum dots (5–10 nm) and amorphous Mo-CN onto NBOC nanosheets, forming an intimate heterojunction structure. PL and ESR analyses revealed that Mo-CN enhances charge carrier separation and governs the NO oxidation process through the activation of dual free radical pathways (⋅O 2 − and ⋅OH). This work establishes a “quantum dot-primary catalyst-cocatalyst” ternary collaborative design paradigm, providing experimental evidence and theoretical models to address the challenges of synergistic optimization among activity, selectivity, and stability in photocatalytic NO x treatment.

Hydrogen production by alkaline water electrolysis represents an effective route for low-cost and clean energy conversion. However, as hydrogen ions (H + ) are the minority species in alkaline media, the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is markedly reduced. Concurrently, the transport of hydroxide ions (OH – ) is limited under large current density in alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, Ni nanoparticles-decorated Mo-Ni microrods (Ni/Mo-Ni) are adopted to boost the ion adsorption . Finite-element simulations suggest that a strong local electric field around the Ni nanoparticles exponentially increases ion adsorption towards the electrode surface, which facilitates reaction kinetics and mass transfer for HER at the cathode and OER at the anode. Thus, the Ni/Mo-Ni electrode exhibits a low overpotential of only −24 mV for HER and + 215 mV for OER to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and can achieve an industrial alkaline splitting current density of 100 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.76 V and stably operate for 87 h. This work suggests a new paradigm in the design and engineering of high-performance catalysts for alkaline electrolyzers.

In this study, the Mo -doped hollow hierarchical Bi/BiOBr microspheres are prepared by the solvothermal method with the Sn 2+ as reductant. The prepared composites show a good degradation effect for ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light. Especially, the BSM-22 composite show the best photocatalytic activity, with the apparent rate constant k as high as 0.03014 min −1 , which is 26.9 times that of the pure BiOBr. It is assumed that the introduction of Sn 2+ facilitate the formation of hollow hierarchical microspheres structure of BiOBr microspheres and the appearance of metallic Bi on the surfaces. Therefore, the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated charges is increased in the composites. Impressive, benefit from the microtopography of the hollow structure, the specific surface area of the BSM-22 (53.476 m 2 /g) is 21.76 times than that of the BiOBr (2.458 m 2 /g). The doping of Mo reduces the band gap of BiOBr (exactly from 2.61 to 1.96 eV) and broaden the photoabsorption region. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of the Mo -doped Bi/BiOBr microspheres are heavily improved in dealing with different kinds of antibiotic molecules. More importantly, these results show that the design strategies of heteroatom doping, metal bismuth production, and morphology control of the bismuth oxybromide composite can greatly improve the visible-light catalytic activity.

Biofuels have generated considerable interest as a direct substituent for fossil fuels due to the energy crisis and greenhouse effect. In this article, bifunctional Pt–Mo catalyst supported on activated carbon (AC) was fabricated for in situ hydrogenation of methyl stearate to alkanes using small amounts of formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen source. A total yield of 75.3% is obtained under 290 °C for 2 h with a small FA/methyl stearate mole ratio of 3.9. Prolonging the reaction time to 6 h results in a total yield of 100%. The experimental and characterization results indicate that the strong interaction of β-Mo2C and Pt over Pt–Mo/AC catalysts give rise to excellent catalytic performance and that Pt active sites are responsible for FA dehydrogenation and decarbonylation of methyl stearate to heptadecane and Pt-doped β-Mo2C active sites catalyzing hydrodeoxygenation of methyl stearate to octadenane. This catalyst is stable during three recycles and is versatile for various feedstocks.

Highly efficient conversion of lignin to value-added liquid fuel or phenol monomers has attracted widespread attentions. The W-Ni-Mo/SEP trimetallic catalyst was firstly prepared and used for lignin catalytic depolymerization (LCD) under supercritical ethanol, which significantly ameliorated the problem of complex product compositions and poor cycle-stability in Mo/SEP. Characterization results confirmed that doping W and Ni metals led to the transformation of metallic oxide phases, and then increased oxygen vacancies (O V ), enhanced the metal-support interaction, and lowered acid site content. The experimental results revealed that W-Ni-Mo/SEP yielded 39.56% of lignin oil (LO) with 32.37 MJ/kg of HHV at 280 °C for 4 h. The selectivity to guaiacol and ethoxyphenol monomer was remarkably increased as compare with Mo/SEP. Furthermore, the W-Ni-Mo/SEP catalyst exhibited unique cycle stability and produced LO even increased to 41.41% after five LCD cycles. The possible reaction paths of lignin converted to guaiacol and ethoxyphenol over W-Ni-Mo/SEP were proposed. Brønsted-acid site promoted the self-activation of ethanol to form aliphatic products. The higher O V preferentially adsorbed phenol-intermediates containing dual oxygens and activated direct dealkylation to obtain guaiacol. The lower Lewis-acid site promoted the demethylation of methoxy in side-chains of phenol-intermediates and then interacted with free ethyl groups to form ethoxyphenol.

Photocatalytic H 2 O splitting by sulfide-based materials is a great challenge, because of the poor resilience of such materials against hole oxidation. Although sulfide ion of catalyst negatively shifts the valence band-edge relative to its oxide ion, the instability of sulfide ions during H 2 O oxidation is a critical obstacle to simultaneous evolution of H 2 and O 2 . Here, active, stable, and spherical nanoflower-like bimetal (Mo,Ni)(S,O) 3- x sulfo-oxide catalysts with a band gap of ∼2.1 eV and different concentrations of oxygen vacancy defects were synthesized for H 2 O splitting. (Mo,Ni)(S,O) 3- x of 25 mg with a suitable amount of oxygen vacancy defects could evolve 587.5 μmol/h H 2 under visible-light irradiation. This work demonstrated an example of converting an oxidation photocatalyst into a reduction one. Microstructure analysis showed that surface oxygen vacancy defects and the multiple-valence charges in Ni and Mo not only promoted effective separation, interface transfer, and reactions of photo-carriers but also reduced the charge build-up to avoid photo-corrosion during photocatalytic water decomposition.

The development of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for water splitting is indispensable for the efficient production of hydrogen fuel. Herein, a Co-doped Ni-Mo phosphide nanorod arrays fabricated on porous Ni foam was shown to be an efficient binder-free electrocatalyst for water splitting. This catalyst featured exceptional activity, exhibiting an overpotential of 29 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction, whereas the corresponding precatalyst exhibited an overpotential of 314 mV at a current density of 50 mA·cm −2 for the oxygen evolution reaction. The achieved electrocatalytic performance provided access to a simple water splitting system, affording a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 at 1.47 V in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Density functional theory results indicated that Co doping and phosphorization were responsible for the high electrocatalytic performance. Thus, this work paves the way for the development of novel noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for practical H 2 production via water splitting.

Al 2 O 3 -supported Ni-Mo as a low-cost and efficient bimetallic catalyst has been applied in the hydrodeoxygenation of plant oils or fats for production of high-quality hydrocarbon fuels, but it is still challenge to avoid the serious cleavage of C-C bonds caused by isolated single-metal Ni sites. Herein, we report a novel Al 2 O 3 -supported Mo-Ni catalyst (Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 ) with Ni and Mo sites in close proximity to enhance the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) selectivity of fatty acid esters. Compared with the conventional Mo-Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst showing high hydrogenolysis activity for C−C bonds, the Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited higher HDO selectivity towards the diesel-range alkanes. Detailed characterizations reveal that during the synthesis of Mo-Ni@Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the loaded Ni species were present in two forms after reduction in a H 2 flow, one is the closely contact of Ni and Mo bimetallic sites and the other is NiAl 2 O 4 , which enhances the synergistic promoting effect between Ni and Mo sites and inhibits the presence of isolated metallic Ni active sites, thereby exhibiting the enhanced remarkably HDO selectivity towards target products.

Solar power drived water splitting for hydrogen production is pivotal for sustainable energy conversion. Yet, it is challenging to develop earth abundant, high active, and durable electrodes to catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under fluctuating solar electricity. Herein we report self-supprted NiMo phosphate (NiMo-Pi) electrodes, where amorphous NiMo-Pi with nanosheets-like structure grow directly on conductive Ni foam by a facile one-step hydrothermal treatment. The electronic structures of Ni and Mo are tuned by O and P in NiMo-Pi electrodes, resulting the down-shift of their d -band centers. NiMo-Pi electrodes offer high activity and stability for HER, delivering -100 and -500 mA cm −2 mg cat −1 with overpotentials of 343 and 461 mV, repectively. They also sustain long-term electrolysis at a constant industrial-level current density of 500 mA cm −2 and at dynamic current densities ranging from -10 to -1 000 mA cm −2 . Their HER activity become higher after stability tests, benefitting from in-situ surface reconstruction. This reconstruction makes the surface rich in active higher-lying d -band centers. This work suggests that tuning the electronic structure of electrodes is an efficient way to design efficient and stable electrodes for HER under harsh conditions.

Water pollution can be efficiently treated by semiconductor photocatalysts under sunlight irradiation. In this study, novel S-scheme SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composites were successfully fabricated via a facile oil-bath method. And the synthesized samples were then characterized by various characterization techniques together with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation. The X-Ray Diffraction(XRD)patterns show that SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composites are composed of cubic perovskite structure SrTiO 3 and hexagonal phase ZnIn 2 S 4 . The High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope(HRTEM)and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) images showed the intimate contacts between SrTiO 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 are established to form the heterojunction. The photocatalytic activity of the composite was excellent when degrading organic pollutants, which outperformed that of pristine SrTiO 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 . The prepared SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 -33% composite sample was proved to have the best photocatalytic activity, with 98 % degradation of organic pollutants under 32 min. The ·O 2 – is the main active reaction species for the degradation of organic pollutants, which was demonstrated by free radical trapping experiment. In addition, the mineralization of organic pollutants during the degradation process was analyzed by Total Organic Carbon (TOC) test. According to a series of experimental and theoretical calculations, the S-scheme heterojunction formed in the SrTiO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite is put forward for comprehending the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and the formation of free radicals.
