Titanium implants, widely used in orthopedic and dental applications, often face challenges due to inadequate osseointegration and the risk of postoperative infections , which can potentially lead to implant failure. To address this issue, we developed a titanium implant with an in-situ fabricated anatase TiO 2 metasurface , characterized by a subwavelength thickness and a preferential orientation of the (001) facets. This metasurface, which consists of uniformly distributed nano-crystallites of approximately 30 nm in size, aims to enhance both osseointegration and antibacterial properties. The addition of isopropanol (IPA) to the precursor solution used in the fabrication process played a crucial role in controlling the grain size and coating thickness of the metasurface. This process led to a redshift of the light absorption peak into the near-infrared (NIR)-II region, thereby increasing the penetration depth of photothermal therapy . The implants with TiO 2 metasurface exhibited increased hydrophilicity, rapid apatite formation in simulated body fluid, and an effective photothermal response under NIR-II light, showing significant antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . In vivo experiments in rabbits indicated superior bone regeneration and osseointegration around the implants with TiO 2 metasurface compared to the control titanium implants. At 4 weeks postoperatively, the bone volume to tissue volume (BV/TV) ratio within the implant was 53.94 %, and by 8 weeks, the implants were nearly entirely filled with new bone, with a BV/TV ratio of approximately 70 %. The findings suggest that the TiO 2 metasurface, which combines antibacterial and bioactive features, has the potential to reduce the risk of postoperative infections and improve clinical outcomes.

Exploration of single molecular species synchronously featured by long excitation/emission wavelength, accurate diagnosis, and effective therapy, remains supremely appealing to implement high-performance cancer phototheranostics. However, those previously established phototheranostic agents are undiversified and stereotyped in terms of structural skeleton, and generally exhibit insufficient phototheranostic outcomes. Herein, we innovatively utilized indanone-condensed thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline (ITQ) as electron acceptor to construct novel photosensitizer with second near-infrared (NIR-II) emission. Experimental study and theoretical calculation demonstrated that comparing with the counterparts constituting by widely employed NIR-II building block benzobisthiadiazole (BBTD) and 6,7-diphenylthiadiazoloquinoxaline (DPTQ), ITQ-based photosensitizer (TITQ) showed superior aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics, much stronger type-I reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and prominent photothermal conversion capacity. Furthermore, TITQ nanoparticles with excellent biocompatibility were capable of effectively accumulating in the tumor site and visualizing tumor through fluorescence-photoacoustic-photothermal trimodal imaging with highly spatiotemporal resolution, and completely eliminating tumor by type-I photodynamic-photothermal therapy.

In this research, rare earth nanoparticles coupled with dihydroartemisinin (DHA) and a targeted antibody (RENP-DHA-Cap) for sprayed NIR II imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT) of tongue cancer were designed. Genetic algorithms combined with combinatorial chemistry were proposed and successfully achieved in a single optimized luminescent phosphor with enhanced NIR II and high upconversion luminescence (UCL) under a NIR laser of wavelength 980 nm or/and 808 nm. In particular, T1 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signals can be adjusted with the Gd ion concentration. In combination with the targeted antibody of capmatinib (Cap), precise NIR II imaging for in situ tongue cancer by a simple spray method can be achieved. Most importantly, NIR II imaging and PDT treatment can be realized with RENP-DHA-capmatinib injected intravenously. This orthogonal theranostic mode with precise diagnosis under 808 nm and targeted effective treatment under 980 nm may promote tongue cancer theranostics.

Sunlight-like full-spectrum phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) require near-infrared (NIR) emission bands to fill the spectrum gap and consequently propel their widespread applications. Although fluoride NIR phosphors have been increasingly investigated, balancing high quantum efficiency (QE), high thermal stability, and wideband NIR emission to obtain excellent overall performance in a single system is still a challenge for Cr3+-doped fluoride NIR phosphor and is significant for direct utilization. Herein, a high-efficiency and thermally stable broadband NIR emission was realized in a novel LiSrGaF6:Cr3+ fluoride phosphor benefitting from a relatively weak crystal field and electron–phonon coupling effect. Upon blue light excitation, the ultra-broad NIR luminescence ranging from 650 to 1150 nm can be achieved with an FWHM of 149 nm peaking at ∼813 nm. Furthermore, this system possesses a high QE of up to 76.88% and its emission intensity at 423 K still maintains 61.62% of its initial intensity at room temperature. An NIR output power of 42.82 mW and photoelectric conversion efficiency of 14.27% of NIR pc-LED devices have also been presented based on this NIR phosphor, demonstrating its possible application in compact nonvisible light sources. In addition, a highly continuous sunlight-like vis-NIR pc-LED was further constructed by employing a blue chip with commercial cyan (BaSi2O2N2:Eu2+), yellow (Y3Al5O12:Ce3+), red (CaAlSiN3:Eu2+), and this LiSrGaF6:Cr3+ NIR phosphor. The as-obtained pc-LED exhibits an ultra-broad spectrum ranging from 400 nm to 1000 nm, exhibiting a higher color reproduction with a color rendering index (CRI) of 95.1 and luminous efficiency (LE) of 50.22 lm W−1. These results indicate that LiSrGaF6:Cr3+ phosphor can be a promising NIR phosphor candidate for high-quality sunlight-like full-spectrum lighting and infrared night vision technology.

Phosphor-convert (pc) near-infrared (NIR) LED is the next-generation smart NIR light sources. Thus, NIR phosphors are quickly developed. The K 3 Al 1−x F 6 :xCr 3+ (KAF:Cr 3+ ) NIR phosphor shows broadband emission from 650 to 900 nm under 430 nm and can be used to fabricate NIR LEDs. In this work, KAF:Cr 3+ phosphors were prepared by a hydrothermal method for the first time. Morphologies and NIR properties are tuned by controlling the hydrothermal processes. Different from the cubic KAF:Cr 3+ synthesized by a coprecipitation method, KAF:Cr 3+ synthesized by the hydrothermal method shows the tetragonal phase. The optimized KAF:3%Cr 3+ shows an internal quantum efficiency of about 31.4%. A NIR pc-LED device was fabricated by integrating the KAF:3%Cr 3+ phosphor with a blue LED chip (~450 nm). The output power of NIR light is about 5.5 mW driven at 150 mA.

To integrate pH/NIR dual-responsive drug release mechanisms with multimodal therapies for effective treatment of malignant tumors, hierarchical hydroxyapatite (HAp)/AuNR hybrid microspheres, consisting of a hollow HAp core and an AuNR shell, were facilely synthesized using phytic acid (IP6) as a sustainable template and phosphorus source. Urea served as the pore-forming agent and pH regulator during the synthesis process. The integration of AuNR into multifunctional HAp systems enabled NIR-responsive controllable drug release and photothermal ablation specifically at the tumorigenic site. The aggregation of AuNR within and outside the hybrid microspheres effectively hinders the release of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) from the hollow HAp microspheres, mitigating the initial burst release and minimizing side effects. The results indicate that the h-HAp/AuNR hybrid exhibited remarkable drug loading efficiency (159.9 μ g ⋅ mg − 1 ), with drug release exhibiting pH-dependent behavior due to the dissolution of HAp in acidic environments. Furthermore, MTT assays and fluorescence imaging demonstrate that DOX-loaded h-HAp/AuNR significantly enhance antitumor efficacy, achieving a cell survival rate of 12.3% at a concentration of 100 μ g ⋅ mL. This integrated system offers a promising approach for combined chemotherapeutic delivery and NIR photothermal therapy.

Formamidine lead iodide (FAPbI 3 ) is an important material for realizing high-performance near-infrared light-emitting diodes (NIR-LEDs). However, due to the uncontrollable growth of solution-processed films which usually causes low coverage, and poor surface morphology, the development of FAPbI 3 -based NIR-LEDs is hindered, restraining its potential industrial applications. In this work, by employing glutamine (Gln) in perovskite precursor, the quality of FAPbI 3 film is improved significantly. Due to the ameliorated solution process by the organic additive, the film coverage over the substrate is substantially enhanced. Meanwhile, the trap state of grain is largely reduced. Consequently, NIR perovskite LEDs are demonstrated with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 15% with the emission peak at 795 nm, which is four times higher than the device with pristine perovskite film.

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) have been attracting considerable attention as a new solid-state light source for night vision technology and biological imaging applications. Nevertheless, the requirement for toxic and concentrated HF in the previous synthesis of fluoride phosphors may cause environmental pollution and safety problems. Here, we report a feasible HF-free green synthesis method using a two-step process to prepare the Cr3+ source and a series of Cr3+, Li+ doped NIR phosphors using aqueous solution and methanol solution. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the pure target material was successfully synthesized. The luminescence intensity of K2ZnF4:Cr3+,Li+ is 2.58 times improved compared with K2ZnF4:Cr3+. Furthermore, the prepared phosphors show broadband emission in the range of 650 to 1000 nm, with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 139 nm peaking at 783 nm. The NIR output power of the pc-LED fabricated with the K2ZnF4:Cr3+,Li+ phosphor and a 450 nm blue chip reaches 1007 mW at 320 mA. This work provides a promising phosphor for application as a NIR light emitting diode and has important implications for the green synthesis of HF-free Cr3+-doped fluorides in the future.

Materials emitting near-infrared (NIR) light play a crucial role in the development of phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) for applications ranging from fundamental science like spectroscopic analysis to highly applied uses like night vision and biological imaging. One class of materials that has garnered significant interest for these technical spaces is Cr3+-activated garnets due to their high efficiency and ability to operate at relatively high temperatures. However, their limited emission beyond 800 nm impedes their use as optimal blue LED-pumped NIR-emitting materials. In this study, we present a new garnet-type NIR phosphor, Na2CaZr2Ge3O12:Cr3+, that addresses this challenge─the material exhibits a long-wavelength emission (λem,max = 832 nm) and good thermal quenching resistance while maintaining an excellent internal quantum efficiency (IQE = 98%). These properties are attributed to a crystal environment reconstruction, where a crystal structure distortion is coupled to a weak crystal field, which is uncommon for most rigid garnet-type phosphors. Furthermore, the fabricated NIR pc-LED devices using this material demonstrate superior performance compared with devices employing well-known efficient NIR phosphors operating in this emission range. The light source is subsequently demonstrated in applications spanning night vision, bioimaging, and nondestructive analysis. This study not only provides insights into the luminescence properties of Cr3+-activated garnet materials with desirable performance but also highlights the practical application of NIR-emitting garnet phosphors.

A functionalized paper based on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) conjugated graphene oxide (GO) was developed for near-infrared (NIR) laser triggered photothermal ablation against infectious bacterial pathogens. Firstly, quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC) not only acted as reducing agent to synthesize Au NPs, but also functioned as coupling agent to link up Au NPs with GO. Au-QCMC-GO(+) was supposed to synergistically intensify the photothermal effect, which was then mixed with nanocellulose to form a functionalized paper via vacuum filtration. The photothermal efficiency, antibacterial treatment and mechanical property of Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper were investigated. Excited by NIR laser irradiation, Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper generated a temperature rise over 80 °C, sufficient for photothermal ablation upon both Gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis and Stapylococcus aureus ) and Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ). Additionally, Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper showed a remarkable enhancement in tensile strength, bursting index and tear index compared to those of pure nanocellulose paper.

The precise activation of the cGAS-STING pathway for effective tumor immunotherapy remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of immune responses and tumor microenvironment (TME) limitations. Here, a multifunctional nanoagonist, cRGD-PDA/ZIF8@ICG/TPT (cDZ@IP), was developed to realize nano-metabolite–driven multimodal synergistic activation of the STING pathway and enhanced immune recognition. The agonist combines cRGD peptide-targeted polydopamine-coated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 with the photosensitizer indocyanine green and the chemotherapeutic drug topotecan. Upon near-infrared laser irradiation, cDZ@IP degrades within the TME, generating high levels of reactive oxygen species, inducing mitochondrial stress, and releasing endogenous mitochondrial DNA. Additionally, topotecan enhances DNA damage accumulation by inhibiting nuclear DNA repair. Zn 2 + released from the agonist further amplifies cGAS-STING pathway activation, thereby ensuring a robust immune response. The mild photothermal therapy-induced immunogenic cell death promotes the initiation of antitumor immunity, while also enhancing the effectiveness of immune checkpoint blockade. In vivo studies show that cDZ@IP significantly inhibits primary and distant tumor growth and prevents lung metastasis, providing a promising strategy for STING pathway-targeted cancer immunotherapy.

A synergistic nanoprobe enables precise, safe, non-radiative skeletal imaging. • Multi-targeting enables precise enrichment throughout the skeleton. • AA@TFN provides a versatile platform for bone disease diagnosis and monitoring. Early diagnosis of bone-related diseases remains a critical clinical challenge, attributable to persistent limitations in imaging accuracy and safety. While near-infrared Region II fluorescence (NIR-II FL) imaging confers substantial advantages for deep-tissue visualization, its clinical translation is hampered by the inadequate targeting specificity of conventional contrast agents. Here, we developed Au-Ag@Apo-Tf/-N 3 (AA@TFN), a synergistic targeting gold–silver nanocluster probe engineered with glutathione and azide functionalities, which achieved bone-specific enrichment via a hierarchical multi-targeting mechanism. AA@TFN first anchored to hydroxyapatite in the bone matrix through glutathione carboxyl-mediated chelation, then targeted transferrin receptors highly expressed in bone marrow, and finally endured macrophage-mediated uptake facilitated by azide-enhanced bone affinity. A synergistic targeting strategy enabled real-time, high-resolution NIR-II FL imaging across the complete skeleton, with enhanced probe enrichment at lesion sites driven by microenvironmental changes. AA@TFN enabled visualization of synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis models and millimeter‑scale microlesions in multiple myeloma models. Furthermore, the probe exhibited excellent biocompatibility and favorable safety profiles, underscoring its strong translational potential. A versatile platform was established for the diagnosis of bone diseases and non-invasive monitoring of therapeutic efficacy.
