This study developed an antibacterial pad by immobilizing lysozyme (LZ) within porous cellulose through polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linking, reinforced with polylactic acid (PLA) barrier layers. The PLA-PVA/LZ pad demonstrated significantly enhanced structural properties, including a 65.52% increase in TS, a 78.88% rise in WCA, and an 87.62% reduction in water absorption. At an optimal loading of 4% LZ, the pads exhibited potent antibacterial efficacy, inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) growth by 93.93% and 86.73%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the pad disrupted bacterial cell morphology, compromised membrane integrity, suppressed ATPase activity, and elevated AKP levels. When applied to cooked rice stored at 25 °C, the pad effectively maintained microbial counts below the detection limit for 48 h, extending shelf life by at least 12 h according to Chinese national standards.

Shaping the polymeric materials into pollen-inspired microparticles with unique structural properties represent a promising area in drug delivery, environmental sensing, and biomaterials. This work reports a robust droplet microfluidic method for fabricating bioinspired pollen-like microparticles from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) stabilized polymer-contained chloroform microdroplets followed by a solvent evaporation induced consolidation process. Monodisperse oil in water droplets containing dissolved polymer(s) in chloroform are initially generated in a glass capillary microfluidic device using an aqueous continuous phase containing PVA. The PVA provides robust droplet stability during the incubation/evaporation process by suppressing droplet coalescence and enabling reproducible interfacial conditions for morphology development. By systematically varying polymer type (homopolymer or copolymer), polymer concentration, PVA concentration (0.5% to 5.0% ( w / v )), incubation temperature (5 °C to 30 °C), and the number of polymer components (one to four), we achieved precise control over particle morphology without requiring elaborately synthesized block copolymer or conjugate polymers. By leveraging these variables, comprehensive characterization through optical microimaging and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to reveal distinct structural outcomes: single-component polymer droplets evolved into spherical microparticles with smooth, porous, or concave surfaces, whereas multi-component droplets yielded complex non-spherical and multi-compartment structures mimicking Bougainvillea, Canna, and Pinus pollen. This study elucidates the interplay between fabrication parameters and microparticle morphology properties, providing a versatile, synthesis-light strategy for innovatively designing functional microparticles with tunable bioinspired features from common polymers.

This work presents a molecular-to-structural strategy for fabricating high-performance CL-20-based composite energetic materials using direct ink writing (DIW). A poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid)/modified potassium titanate whisker (PVA/PAA/ M-PTW) interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was designed to simultaneously enhance mechanical strength and reduce mechanical sensitivity. The hydrogen bonding–covalent crosslinking–filler reinforcement mechanism ensured uniform dispersion of CL-20 crystals and strong interfacial adhesion within the polymer matrix. Surface modification of PTW with 5 wt% KH-550 improved compatibility with the IPN, yielding printed structures with excellent form accuracy and adhesion to aluminum substrates (0.961 MPa). The optimized composite exhibited high compressive strength (16.77 MPa) and reduced impact and friction sensitivities compared with ε-CL-20 and submicron CL-20 samples. It achieved stable detonation wave transmission within a 90°-160° corner range in a 1.2 × 1.2mm charge slot, with the critical detonation size reaching 0.3m × 0.3mm. The measured detonation velocity of 7267.9m/s (83.2% of theoretical). These results demonstrate that the DIW-based PVA/PAA/M-PTW system enables the precise construction of high-strength, low-sensitivity energetic composites with reliable detonation performance, providing a promising pathway for advanced micro-scale energetic devices.

The high catalytic performance induced by the photothermal conversion effect holds immense potential in environmental purification, attracting widespread attention. Herein, the synthesis of PVA/PEI/Au nanofibers was successfully achieved, and they were applied as plasmonic photothermal catalysts to facilitate the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The photothermal performance of nanofibers loaded with different concentrations of Au nanostars (NSs) was compared under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Remarkably, at low laser power densities under NIR irradiation, the PVA/PEI/Au nanofibers catalyzed the reduction of 4-NP, resulting in a 1.5-fold increase in reaction rate and achieving a 98% conversion efficiency within 8 min. Additionally, the nanofibers demonstrated excellent recyclability, maintaining a conversion efficiency exceeding 97% over six consecutive cycles. The PVA/PEI/Au nanofibers hold significant promise for the practical application of electrospun nanofibers in the photothermal degradation of environmental pollutants.

In this study, we fabricated a fibrous composite hydrogel material with microchannel structures for the adsorption of pollutants from wastewater. Leveraging the solid-to-liquid phase transition time differential of PVA short fibers and the porous structure of melt-blown nonwoven fabric, we constructed microchannels with varying size gradients for water transport within the hydrogel. This design accelerated water diffusion and enhanced pollutant adsorption efficiency. The results demonstrated that as the addition amount of PVA short fibers increased from 0% to 20%, the swelling ratio and maximum swelling ratio of the material increased, while the equilibrium adsorption time for pollutants was reduced by over 50 min. The Langmuir isotherm model revealed maximum adsorption capacities of 496.33 mg/g for Pb(II) and 297.35 mg/g for MB (Methylene Blue). Remarkably, the adsorption efficiency remained above 90% even under acidic conditions (low pH). Furthermore, after four consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption efficiency was maintained at over 88%. These findings indicate that this material exhibits significant potential for the efficient removal of aqueous pollutants, contributing to advancements in the field of adsorption science. Graphical A fibrous composite hydrogel with microchannel structures was fabricated for pollutant adsorption. PVA short fibers and melt-blown nonwoven fabric enabled rapid water transport, reducing equilibrium adsorption time by >50 min. Maximum Langmuir capacities reached 496.33 mg/g for Pb(II) and 297.35 mg/g for MB. Adsorption efficiency exceeded 90% at low pH and remained >88% after four cycles.

The CLZPP hydrogel with zwitterionic surfactant has high conductivity (16.19 S/m) and large tensile strain of 1083.76%. • CLZPP hydrogel electrodes show higher signal-to-noise ratios than commercial ones in EMG, ECG, and EOG monitoring. • The integrated device fabricated via layered pouring and stepwise cross-linking shows stable output over 1000 cycles. Flexible self-powered devices can operate without external power supplies and are therefore attractive for wearable health monitoring. Here, cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), LiCl, and ZnO nanoparticles were incorporated into a poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyacrylamide (PVA/PAM) double-network matrix to form a highly conductive and stretchable hydrogel. The optimized CAPB/LiCl/ZnO/PVA/PAM (CLZPP) hydrogel achieved a tensile stress of 116.41 kPa and a tensile strain of 1083.76%. Its toughness and ionic conductivity reached 0.66 MJ/m 3 and 16.19 S/m, respectively. It also exhibited sensitive strain responses and reliable cycling stability. As a wearable sensor, the hydrogel detected motions of the finger, wrist, knee, and neck, together with weak physiological signals associated with speech. As a bioelectrode, it recorded electromyographic (EMG), electrocardiographic (ECG), and electrooculographic (EOG) signals with performance comparable to commercial electrodes and higher signal-to-noise ratios. An all-hydrogel, fully flexible integrated piezoelectric sensor was then fabricated by sequential casting and stepwise crosslinking. The integrated piezoelectric sensor generated stable voltage through the piezoelectric response of ZnO, converting deformation-induced mechanical energy into electrical energy for self-powered sensing. Piezoelectric signatures produced by contact with different materials were further combined with machine learning to enable rapid material classification. This work provides a strategy for jointly optimizing the mechanical, electrical, and piezoelectric properties of hydrogels and supports their use in self-powered wearable health monitoring and intelligent human-machine interfaces. Hydrophobic membranes, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), are prone to pore wetting during membrane distillation when treating wastewater containing amphiphilic contaminants. In this study, a Janus membrane composed of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was fabricated via vacuum filtration and employed in air-bubbling-assisted direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). The optimal membrane, with a 0.815 mg/cm 2 ZIF-8 loading, achieved a desalination rate of 99 %, a stable vapor flux of 20.53 L/(m 2 ·h), and a permeate conductivity of less than 1.44 μS/cm during 25 h of operation. However, the increasing concentration of SDS in the feed solution over time led to an increase in conductivity, which pointed to a reduction in the membrane's anti-wetting performance, suggesting the limitations of ZIF-8 alone in mitigating wetting. To overcome this, continuous air bubbling was introduced, which significantly enhanced wetting resistance and extended the membrane's operational lifespan to 48 h. Higher airflow rates (5.93 L/min) yielded optimal performance. Furthermore, a Random Forest machine learning model was employed to predict permeate flux and conductivity based on key operational parameters, achieving a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) greater than 0.73. Collectively, this study demonstrates the synergistic potential of the ZIF-8/PVA@PTFE Janus membrane combined with air-bubbling assistance to effectively suppress wetting and enhance the efficiency and durability of membrane distillation for challenging wastewater.

Herein, we demonstrated a environmental-friendly biocatalytic route for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC), which is the first example to use enzyme in the process. Moreover, immobilization of Penicillium expansum lipase (PEL) using environmentally benign and biodegradable CMC–PVA polymer has significantly enhanced the catalytic activity thus making them an eligible biocatalyst for synthesis of DMC. The biocatalyst revealed high catalytic performance even under ambient pressure and low temperature (conversion of EC to 94%, yield of DMC to 93% and selectivity of DMC to 99%). The immobilized lipase was effectively recycled for four consecutive cycles providing good yields of the desired product. Accompanying with the intense requirement for the green chemicals and process, our work can provide a useful idea for “green and clean” of harmful chemical reaction.

Inspired by the natural nacre structure, we propose a new strategy to fabricate mineralized, multiple crosslinked hydrogel membranes with the “rigid silica in soft polymer” nacre-like structure. In-situ SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/NaAlg) are used to simulate the rigid “bricks” and soft “mortar” compositions of nacre, respectively. The nacre-like mineralized (PVA/CaAlg/SiO 2 ) membrane showed a higher tensile strength of 4.1 ± 0.08 MPa, excellent pure water flux of 170 ± 3 L/m 2 h, and an oil/water rejection rate of 99 %. The interwoven hierarchal structure, similar to nacre, was determined by SEM analysis . In addition, incorporating SiO 2 NPs increases the anti-swelling, roughness, and hydrophilicity of the membranes. PVA/CaAlg/SiO 2 membrane exhibited excellent superhydrophilicity (WCA value was 0°) and superoleophobicity underwater (OCA value was 162°). PVA/CaAlg/SiO 2 membrane also showed excellent separation performance for water-soluble organic pollutants and can be used for dye separation with rejection efficiencies of 99.5 %, 99.1 %, and 98.3 % for Congo red (CR), Alizarin red (AR), and Sunset yellow (SY), respectively. Moreover, PVA/CaAlg/SiO 2 membrane had outstanding long-term filtration and antifouling performance. The biomineralization-inspired structure provides a promising technique that can be used to prepare high-performance organic-inorganic membranes with great promise for wastewater separation application.

After suffering the COVID-19 viruliferous epidemic outbreak, wearing disposable protective masks has become an effective protective measure in our daily life. However, protection effectiveness of disposable protective masks will be greatly reduced or even lost once overstep their service life span. Thus, developing a strategy that can identify the remaining service life of masks by naked eyes becomes desirable. Here, we prepared a gradient transparent membrane as a view layer of masks by electrospinning the semi-interpenetration PVA/PVME membrane (semi-IPNM) which rapid responded to the respiration moisture. Based on the Darcy law by COMSOL software, with the increasing time of respiration simulation, the transparent area diffused from center to the edge of the membrane, like a progress bar revealing the remaining life of face mask. The resultant semi-IPNM exhibited excellent flexibility, nontoxicity, high tensile strength (34.5 MPa) and reliable filtration efficiency (greater than92%) even through 6 h using. Meanwhile, the pressure drop of semi-IPNM became higher after 6 h using, which was not meet up with human needs that indicated the disposable face mask should be discarded according to WS/T 311–2009 technical specification. Therefore, a view layer of face masks built by this strategy possesses a real-time service life management and an effective respiratory protection.

Recently, carbon dots (CDs) have gained much attention in optoelectronic fields on account of their superior optical and environmentally friendly properties. Nevertheless, aggregation-induced quenching (AIQ) effect of solid-state CDs and thermal quenching caused by high temperatures severely hinders their further development. Herein, a novel wCDs/BNNS-OH hybrid nanostructure was synthesized by combining blue CDs (bCDs) and yellow CDs (yCDs) to the hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS–OH) surface. The uniform dispersion of CDs in BNNS-OH effectively alleviates the undesirable AIQ effect, and enables CDs/BNNS-OH composites to have color-tunable fluorescence characteristics. The wCDs/BNNS-OH/PVA composite film was obtained by encapsulating wCDs/BNNS-OH into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The film exhibits excellent luminescence stability in the air, ultraviolet light , water, and high-temperature environment. Meanwhile, since wCDs/BNNS-OH establishes an effective heat transfer channel in the PVA matrix, the working temperature of CDs in the wCDs/BNNS-OH/PVA film is greatly reduced. Moreover, the prepared wCDs/BNNS-OH/PVA film is flexible enough to retain the photoluminescence intensity unchanged after thousands of bending cycles. This high stability and heat dissipation wCDs/BNNS-OH/PVA composite film will facilitate the application of CDs in flexible and foldable lighting devices.

A novel CMC/PVA/MIL-101(Cr) aerogel bead (CPMB) was prepared by the green polymer matrix of CMC and PVA and nanofiller of MIL-101(Cr) through the simple complexing with the ionic crosslinking agent, which could be an adsorptive platform for effectively capturing of Co(II) and Ni(II) ions in wastewater. The morphology, surface chemistry, and textural characteristics were investigated by varied characterization methods to reveal behind mechanisms for the dissimilarity in adsorption performance. The optimal modifying dosage of MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles was determined to form an optimal tailored network with abundant MIL-101 clusters and hydroxyl/carboxyl groups inside the network that greatly achieved the most accessible heavy metals to CPMB-1. Meanwhile, the influences of temperature, adsorption dosage, pH, and interfering cations on the capacity of CPMB-1 were investigated, while adsorption behaviors of adsorbents were also explored. Analytic results indicated that the capture of two targeted ions by CPMB-1 could favorably comply with the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isothermal adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacities of two targeted ions calculated by data were 180.3 mg/g and 261.9 mg/g, respectively. According to the results of XPS and FTIR analysis, the electrostatic attraction and chelating effect could be the main mechanisms for improved performance, and contributing groups were the hydroxyl and carboxylic acid introduced into CPMB-1. Moreover, the as-designed CPMB-1 exhibited excellent recyclability and stability in eight cycles. The encouraging results exhibited by CPMB-1 might bring a new idea for integrating multiple functionalities of MOFs and biomass components for designing functional composites for efficient remediations of wastewater.
