Exploring the Size Effect of Pt Nanoparticles on the Photocatalytic Nonoxidative Coupling of Methane

Jiayu Ma,Xianjun Tan,Qingqing Zhang,Yan Wang,Jinlong Zhang,Lingzhi Wang

The high inertness of the C–H bond makes the photocatalytic methane conversion a significant challenge. The platinum nanoparticle is a promising cocatalyst for CH4 activation, while the study of its structure characteristics and functionality remains in its infancy. Herein, the size effect of Pt on the photocatalytic nonoxidative methane conversion efficiency was systematically investigated over x-Pt/Ga2O3 with the particle size (x) ranging from 1.5 to 2.7 nm, where a volcano-shaped relation was observed. The smaller size is beneficial to the formation of Ptδ+ species, which is mainly distributed on the terrace sites according to the DFT calculation. The corner Pt atom is the geometric active site for the CH4 polarization, and the terrace Ptδ+ helps promote C–H activation since the activity is decreased on reduced x-Pt/Ga2O3 with a lower Ptδ+ content. Meanwhile, Ptδ+ species favors the oxidation of adsorbed −CH3 group to ·CH3. The volcano-shaped size effect on the NOCM activity was finally rationalized by the balance between C–H activation and C2H6 desorption from the corner sites on different sized Pt.

Plasmonic Hot-Electron-Painted Au@Pt Nanoparticles as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Detection of H2O2

Chang Xia,Wei He,Xiao Feng Yang,Peng Fei Gao,Shu Jun Zhen,Yuan Fang Li,Cheng Zhi Huang

Plasmon-driven catalysis of metal nanostructures has garnered wide interest. Here, a photogenerated plasmonic hot-electron painting strategy was reported to form Au@Pt composite nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) with high catalytic reactivity without using reducing agents. Au nanoparticles, including Au nanospheres (Au NSs), Au nanorods (Au NRs), and Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs), generated hot electrons under localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation, which made the platinum precursor reduced as a consequence that Pt(0) atoms were painted on the surface of Au NPs to form an asymmetric Pt shell outside the plasmonic Au core. Compared with bare Au NPs, Au@Pt NPs exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward reduction of H2O2 due to the bimetallic synergistic effect and great dispersion of Au@Pt NP-modified indium tin oxide (Au@Pt NPs/ITO). It exhibited a linear detection of H2O2 in a wide concentration range from 0.5 to 1000 μM with a low detection limit of 0.11 μM (S/N = 3). Therefore, the plasmonic hot-electron-painted Au@Pt NPs represent a novel and simple method for the design of advanced noble asymmetric metal nanomaterials.

Excavated and dendritic Pt-Co nanocubes as efficient ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation electrocatalysts

Hongyu Du,Kai Wang,Panagiotis Tsiakaras,Pei Kang Shen

Noble metal electrocatalysts with excavated and dendritic architectures have recently attracted growing attention for their large accessible surface areas and high density of under-coordinated atoms. However, it is a tough challenge to avoid the atoms migrating to the corners and kinks and finally obtain the excavated structure, after the complicated interaction among multiple factors during the synthesis process, let alone the growth control of dendritic shape. Herein we demonstrate a facile strategy to synthesize Pt-Co nanocubes having excavated and dendritic structure (Pt-Co EDNCs). Specifically, the Pt-Co EDNC nanocrystal is composed of a deeply excavated nanocube and nanodendrites selectively protruding on the vertexes. Further electrocatalytic investigations showed that Pt-Co EDNCs exhibited enhanced catalytic properties towards the electro-oxidation of ethylene glycol and glycerol compared with commercial Pt/C, which could be attributed to both its unique structure and the synergism between Pt and Co.

Enhancing catalytic H2 generation by surface electronic tuning of systematically controlled Pt-Pb nanocrystals

E Bin,Huang Bolong,Zhang Nan,Shao Qi,Li Yujing,Huang Xiaoqing

Although many previous studies have shown that the shape-control of nanocrystal (NCs) is an efficient strategy to improve the catalytic performance, these syntheses were conducted under very different conditions, which are not suitable for the shape-dependent properties studies as well as catalysis optimization. Herein, we demonstrate an effective method for the selective synthesis of well-defined PtPb NCs in a highly controllable manner. Four distinct PtPb NCs, namely PtPb peanut nanocrystals, PtPb hexagonal nanoplates, PtPb octahedra nanocrystals (ONCs) and PtPb nanoparticles have been selectively prepared in the presence of different phenols. Significantly, we found that the created PtPb NCs/C shows the shape-dependent activity with the optimized PtPb ONCs/C being the most active for the ethanol reforming to H 2 , 22.4 times higher than the commercial Pt/C. The high performance of PtPb ONCs/C has been also successfully expanded into other polyhydric alcohols reformings. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals that the high Pt(0)/Pt(II) ratio in PtPb NCs/C enhances the alcohols reforming. The density functional theory (DFT) studies show the PtPb ONCs possess the highest surface averaged electronic occupation for unit Pt-atom, matching well with XPS results. The PtPb ONCs/C also displays excellent durability with limited activity decay and negligible structure/composition changes after ten cycles. This work demonstrates an important advance in the high-level control of metallic nanostructures to tune the catalytic activities.

Sandwich-Structured MXene/Carbon Hybrid Support Decorated with Pt Nanoparticles for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Ziyu Zhang,Chang Liu,Yunkun Dai,Bo Liu,Pan Guo,Fengdi Tu,Miao Ma,Lixiao Shen,Zigang Zhao,Yangyang Liu,Yunlong Zhang,Lei Zhao,Zhenbo Wang

Carbon supports for cathodic catalysts in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells suffer from rapid corrosion and instability; therefore, alternative supports with a stable structure and a high electric conductivity are highly required. In this paper, a three-dimensional support hybridized by MXene and Ketjen Black is developed, in which Ketjen Black is sandwiched between MXene nanosheets (MCM). After decorating with Pt nanoparticles by a facile wet-chemical approach, a three-dimensional (3D) Pt/MCM catalyst is obtained. The intercalated Ketjen Black prevents the stacking of MXene nanosheets, thus increasing the specific surface area of the catalyst and exposing the active sites. The strong interaction between functionalized MXene nanosheets and Pt nanoparticles further enhances its intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. Pt/MCM demonstrated encouraging ORR activity with the half-wave potential and specific activity of 0.892 V and 0.377 mA·cm–2, respectively, surpassing the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts. Especially, Pt/MCM achieves ultrahigh durability with a 1 mV decrease in half-wave potential and a 1.73% decrease in mass activity after an accelerated durability test. Given the performance and structure–activity relationships of Pt/MCM, it holds great potential for various energy and catalysis-related applications.

Highly active Pt/NF electrode preparation towards efficient hydrogen production in anaerobic fermentation liquid

Qiyao Liu,Wenjiao Sang,Fangzhou Wang,Kai Zhao,Ruiping Liu

Hydrogen, recognized for its high energy density and zero carbon emissions, faces challenges in resource-efficient production. Meanwhile, anaerobic digestion (AD) is frequently impaired by acidification resulting from the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), undermining system stability. Herein, we designed a Pt/NF electrode and utilized VFAs-rich acidogenic fermentation liquid as the feedstock for efficient hydrogen production. The electrochemically deposited Pt/NF electrode exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity (overpotential of 340.63 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 ) with high stability. The hydrogen yield of the Pt/NF system was strongly influenced by the applied voltage as well as the type and concentration of VFAs, peaking at 976.20 mL/g CH 3 COOH under conditions of 3.00 V using acetic acid at 5.00 g COD/L. Electrolysis of the actual fermentation liquid produced 28.67 mL of hydrogen and achieved Faradaic and energy efficiencies of 93.92% and 34.77%, respectively, accompanied by an increase in pH and retention of VFAs. hese results demonstrate that the Pt/NF system can be effectively integrated with AD to simultaneously produce green hydrogen and regulate acidification, significantly improving the overall AD process performance and stability.

Facet-dependent degradation of Pd nanocubes and surface stabilization via atomic-level Pt modification

Chen Li,Zhe Gong,Peiqi Huang,Yongchao Wang,Mingxing Gong

Single-crystal Pd nanocubes with preferential (100) facets were synthesized as model catalysts to probe the intrinsic activity and stability limits of Pd-based electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation. The nanocubes deliver a mass activity of 1140 mA mg −1 at 0.9 V, nearly twice that of Pt/C. Despite this impressive activity, accelerated durability tests reveal pronounced performance decay, arising from facet-dependent structural degradation rather than catalyst detachment. Identical-location TEM combined with in-situ Raman spectroscopy uncovers that adsorbed hydroxyl intermediates trigger Pd dissolution, lattice reconstruction, and interparticle coalescence, leading to severe loss of electrochemically active surface area. Guided by these mechanistic insights, we introduced an atomic-level surface modification by depositing an ultrathin Pt overlayer on Pd nanocubes. The resulting Pd@Pt nanocubes preserve the cubic architecture, achieve an enhanced mass activity of 1506 mA mg −1 , and exhibit substantially improved stability with >50% retention after extended operation. The suppression of hydroxyl-induced poisoning and coalescence highlights the role of interfacial electronic tuning in stabilizing active surfaces. This work elucidates the facet-specific degradation pathways of Pd catalysts and establishes surface modification as a generalizable strategy toward designing durable, high-performance electrocatalysts for alcohol oxidation.

Selective CO2 reduction to HCOOH on a Pt/In2O3/g-C3N4 multifunctional visible-photocatalyst

Jiehong He,Pin Lv,Jian Zhu,Hexing Li

Selective photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has been regarded as one of the most amazing ways for re-using CO2. However, its application is still limited by the low CO2 conversion efficiency. This work developed a novel Pt/In2O3/g-C3N4 multifunctional catalyst, which exhibited high activity and selectivity to HCOOH during photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light irradiation owing to the synergistic effect between photocatalyst, thermocatalyst, and heterojunctions. Both In2O3 and g-C3N4 acted as visible photocatalysts, in which porous g-C3N4 facilitated H2 production from water splitting while the In2O3 nanosheets embedded in g-C3N4 pores favored CO2 fixation and H adsorption onto the Lewis acid sites. Besides, the In2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions could efficiently inhibit the photoelectron–hole recombination, leading to enhanced quantum efficiency. The Pt could act as a co-catalyst in H2 production from photocatalytic water splitting and also accelerated electron transfer to inhibit electron–hole recombination and generated a plasma effect. More importantly, the Pt could activate H atoms and CO2 molecules toward the formation of HCOOH. At normal pressure and room temperature, the TON of HCOOH in CO2 conversion was 63.1 μmol g−1 h−1 and could reach up to 736.3 μmol g−1 h−1 at 40 atm.

Engineering Pt heterogeneous catalysts for accelerated liquid–solid redox conversion in Li-S batteries

Qinhua Gu,Yujie Qi,Wuxing Hua,Tongxin Shang,Junnan Chen,Luozhen Jiang,Lina Li,Ming Lu,Yixiao Zhang,Xi Liu,Ying Wan,Bingsen Zhang

The shuttle effect caused by soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) deteriorates multiphase transformation reaction kinetics of sulfur species, and gives rise to an unserviceable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery. Catalysis, as a process optimization approach, offers an option to eliminate the intrinsic issues. However, exploring and understanding the role of catalysts on electrode reaction remains critical bottlenecks, particularly as they are prone to continuous evolution under complex dynamic environment. Herein, platinum nanoparticles loaded on MXene nanosheets, as sulfur host, and the action of catalysts on the reaction process are investigated via ex-situ monitors upon solid–liquid–solid chemical transformation of sulfur species. These traces confirm that the high performance originates from electron transfer between catalysts and LiPSs, which lowers the nucleation barrier from liquid LiPSs to solid Li 2 S/Li 2 S 2 . Further, the accelerated liquid–solid conversion can alleviate the accumulation of LiPSs, and boost the reaction kinetics in Li-S batteries. The findings corroborate the electronic modulation between catalysts and LiPSs, which is a generalizable strategy to optimize energy conversion efficiency of Li-S batteries.

Characterization and electrocatalytic properties of electrospun Pt-IrO2 nanofiber catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Zhi Ming Wang,Peng Liu,Yan Peng Cao,Feng Ye,Chao Xu,Xiao Ze Du

Summary In this study, novel Pt-IrO 2 nanofiber catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) were successfully prepared using the electrospinning method with a high-concentration precursor solution. The composition and structure of catalysts were characterized, and the electrocatalytic performance of the nanofiber catalysts in water electrolysis was investigated from various aspects such as overpotential, charge transfer resistance, and exchange current density. Special attention was paid on the effect of Pt/Ir ratio on the electrocatalytic activity of the electrospun nanofibers. The results showed that the Pt-IrO 2 nanofiber catalysts with average fiber diameters ranging from 10 to 100 nm can be successfully obtained by the electrospinning method, and the average diameter decreased with the increase of Pt content. Since a bigger amount of IrO 2 content and a thinner fiber structure are all beneficial to the electrocatalytic performance, the Pt-IrO 2 catalysts with Pt:Ir = 1:9 and Pt:Ir = 9:1 both showed better catalytic performance for OER than the commercial IrO 2 , which was also demonstrated by the lower charge transfer resistance and higher exchange current density. As a result, the overpotentials of Pt-IrO 2 catalysts with Pt:Ir = 1:9 and Pt:Ir = 9:1 are 50 mV and 32 mV lower than the overpotential of the commercial IrO 2 at 30 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively. The electrospun Pt-IrO 2 nanofiber catalyst with proper Pt content seems to be very promising since it can not only improve the catalytic performance and the safety of PEM electrolysis cells, but also reduce the amount of more expensive Ir in catalysts.

Pt@CeO2 Multicore@Shell Self-Assembled Nanospheres: Clean Synthesis, Structure Optimization, and Catalytic Applications

Xiao Wang,Dapeng Liu,Shuyan Song,Hongjie Zhang

A clean nonorganic synthetic method has been developed to fabricate the uniform pomegranate-like Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres in a large scale. Under the effective protection of Ar atmosphere the redox reaction just simply happened between Ce(NO3)3 and K2PtCl4 in an alkaline aqueous solution, in which no other reducing agents or surfactants were added. The as-obtained nanospheres exhibited excellent structure stability even being calcined at 600 °C for 5 h. Moreover, the as-obtained Pt@CeO2 multicore@shell nanospheres can be further supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to form heterogeneous nanocatalyst, which has been successfully applied in the chemical reduction reaction of nitrophenol (NP) by ammonia borane (NH3BH3, dubbed as AB) instead of hazardous H2 or NaBH4.

Ultra-Dispersed Pt Nanoparticles on SAPO-34/γ-Al2O3 Support for Efficient Propane Dehydrogenation

Chu Yue,Zhang Qiang,Wu Tongwei,Nawaz Zeeshan,Wang Yao,Wei Fei

Ultra-dispersed precious metal nanoparticles with good thermal stability are highly required for heterogeneous catalysis. However, the efficient and effective strategy to disperse ultra-fine precious metal nanoparticles at high reaction temperature is still not fully understood yet. In this contribution, a family of catalysts with ultra-small Pt nanoparticles were prepared using impregnation method by adjusting the zeolite content in the SAPO-34 and γ-Al2O3 mixed support. The effect of Pt nanoparticle size on the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability was investigated in the propane dehydrogenation reaction. Catalyst with smaller Pt particles exhibits better catalytic performance. Both the highest Pt dispersion and the best catalytic activity can be achieved by using SAPO-34 and γ-Al2O3 mixed support with 70 wt.% of SAPO-34. The size and structure of the Pt nanoparticles on the optimal catalyst were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 1.32 nm were observed. There were stronger metal-support interactions between the oxidized tin species and Pt particles on SAPO-34 support compared to that on γ-Al2O3 catalyst. These lead to high Pt dispersion and consequently good catalytic performance.
