Catalytic Conversion of Carbohydrates into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural by Phosphotungstic Acid Encapsulated in MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) Catalyst in Deep Eutectic Solvents

Wei Mao,Jiawen Hao,Lingyu Zeng,Hao Wang,Hao Xu,Jinghong Zhou

Herein, we report the synthesis of bimetal–organic frameworks (BMOFs) with both Brønsted and Lewis acidities, in which phosphotungstic acid (PTA) was encapsulated in BMOFs. It is efficient in converting starch to 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) such as choline chloride and formic acid. The highest yield of HMF (37.94%) was obtained using P0.5/BMOFs1.0to catalyze starch in a mixed solvent system comprising DESs and ethyl acetate (EAC) (v/v; 2:3) at 180 °C and a reaction time of 10 min. Employing a DES as a cocatalyst and solvent reduced the use of organic solvents. The catalyst showed adequate reusability, and the HMF yield only decreased by 2.88% after six cycles of reuse compared with that of the initial catalyst. This study demonstrates the application potential of BMOFs in the conversion of biomass to useful molecules with commercial and/or research value. Keywords:bimetal–organic frameworks;phosphotungstic acid;loading;cassava starch;catalysis

Synergistic effects of bimetals and hierarchical structures in Mg–Sn-Beta-H zeolites for lactic acid synthesis from biomass-derived carbohydrates

Meng Xia,Zheng Shen,Shaoze Xiao,Minyan Gu,Yalei Zhang

During the catalytic transformation of biomass into valuable chemicals, enhancing the yield of target products and inhibiting undesirable reactions are vital but challenging. In this study, a facile and efficient method for synthesizing a hierarchical bimetallic Mg–Sn-Beta-H zeolite was developed. Using this method, the simultaneous fabrication of catalytically active sites and hierarchical structures was achieved. Selective experiments and kinetic analysis confirmed that the catalytically active sites and hierarchical structures in the catalyst exhibited a clear synergistic effect on the transformation of glucose into lactic acid with a high yield of 62.7%, and the lactic acid yield remained above 58% after reusing the catalyst four times. An in-depth analysis of the synergistic catalysis mechanism demonstrated that strong and weak Lewis acidity in the catalytically active sites promoted the main reaction steps, including isomerisation and retro-aldol condensation, whereas the hierarchical structure induced by the introduction of magnesium into the parent Sn-Beta zeolite regulated the main reaction steps and suppressed the side reactions. The coupling of multifunctional active sites and hierarchical structures provides a new strategy for addressing the challenges of commercial lactic acid production.

Coaxial electrospinning synthesis free-standing Sn/TiO2 flexible carbon fibers with sheath/core structure for advanced flexible lithium/potassium-ion batteries

Juxing Zha,Duyu Zheng,Yuanshuang Wang,Zelin Xie,Gang Wu,Jiqiu Qi,Fuxiang Wei,Qingkun Meng,Xiaolan Xue,Danyang Zhao,Yongzhi Li,Qing Yin,Changrui Jiang,Qihang Zeng,Yanwei Sui,Bin Xiao

Flexible Sn/TiO 2 carbon nanofiber (ST-NCF) composites were constructed by doping TiO 2 into tin-based carbon nanofibers via coaxial electrospinning. Sn/TiO 2 carbon nanofiber was directly used as an anode for Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs) and Potassium-ion Batteries (PIBs), which show exceptional electrochemical performances. The layered sheath/core structure of the material lead to its good electrochemical properties, where the core Sn carbon nanofiber was encapsulated by the sheath layer of TiO 2 nanoparticles. In addition to enhancing its electrical conductivity, the outer TiO 2 and N-doped carbon fiber matrix also provide a buffer zone for volumetric strain during charging and discharging. The fiber core Sn and sheath TiO 2 form a heterojunction interface on the two-dimensional tube surface, which increases the diffusion rate of ions and electrons. After 100 cycles, TiO 2 -NCF and ST-NCF-40%TBT (40% TBT indicates the percentage of TiO 2 in shell solution to the total composition of shell spinning solution) show capacities of 386.6 mAh g −1 and 1336 mAh g -1 , respectively, at 0.5A g -1 . After 2000 cycles, ST-NCF-40%TBT in LIBs displayed a high capacity of 299 mAh g -1 at 10 A g -1 . After 350 cycles at 1A g -1 , the capacity of ST-NCF-40%TBT in PIBs is reserved at 307 mA h g -1 . Due to the superior mechanical flexibility of ST-NCF-40%TBT films, it will be a promising anode candidate for flexible LIBs and PIBs.

Solution-Processed Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 Thin-Film Solar Cells Using Elemental Cu, Zn, Sn, S, and Se Powders as Source

Guo Jing,Pei Yingli,Zhou Zhengji,Zhou Wenhui,Kou Dongxing,Wu Sixin

Solution-processed approach for the deposition of Cu 2 ZnSn (S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) absorbing layer offers a route for fabricating thin film solar cell that is appealing because of simplified and low-cost manufacturing, large-area coverage, and better compatibility with flexible substrates. In this work, we present a simple solution-based approach for simultaneously dissolving the low-cost elemental Cu, Zn, Sn, S, and Se powder, forming a homogeneous CZTSSe precursor solution in a short time. Dense and compact kesterite CZTSSe thin film with high crystallinity and uniform composition was obtained by selenizing the low-temperature annealed spin-coated precursor film. Standard CZTSSe thin film solar cell based on the selenized CZTSSe thin film was fabricated and an efficiency of 6.4 % was achieved.

MOF derived M/Sn/N (M= Mg, Mn) based carbon nanospheres as highly efficient multicomponent electrocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution and photovoltaics

Asim Arshad,Brundha Chidambaram,Abdullah Nasir,Tianxiang Yang,Menglong Sun,Nosheen Zafar,Sining Yun

Constructing multicomponent electrocatalysts towards efficient energy conversion is widely adopted strategy, in this regard, high performance metal/nonmetal codoped carbon electrode materials have attained great consideration. Still, the electroacatalytic susceptibility, abundant intrinsic active sites, and stable electrochemical performance in different electrolytes are considered as underline challenges, which can be addressed by rational structural modifications to build a hybrid electroactive material. In this work, unique Sn based multicomponent carbon nanospheres are firstly developed as highly efficient bi-functional electrocatalysts in solar cells and hydrogen evolution. The designed electrocatalysts feature the combined effect of dispersed bimetal active sites and sufficient nitrogen components within spherical carbon framework, which readily enhanced the charge transfer rate via multiple channels, boosting the triiodide reduction reaction (IRR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a result, solar cell with Mn/Sn-NC based counter electrodes (CEs) exhibited an excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.39 %, outperforming Pt (7.67 %). Moreover, superior HER kinetics are also demonstrated by Mn/Sn-NC with a small overpotential of 127.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and tafel slope of 77 mV dec −1 . The rational design of the carbon nanospheres with MnSn 2 bimetal nanoparticles and N doping promotes a high electrochemically active surface area, low charge-transfer resistance, excellent electrochemical stability, and superior electrocatalytic activity, providing a promising route to construct highly efficient materials towards multiple energy conversion applications.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, and ecological and health risks of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds in shrimp and fish from aquaculture ponds

Pingxiu Zeng,Hongmei Hu,Yuanchao Wang,Jinhua Liu,Heyong Cheng

Aquaculture organisms may accumulate metals to induce health risks. Compared with the focus on total contents, chemical-specific risk assessment makes reasonable but is rare. Herein, we elucidated occurrence of twelve metal compounds in shrimp and fish (edible muscle, one of major metal-containing and generally targeted organs), water, sediment, and feedstuff from two aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province (one of the major aquatic production and consumption areas). We detected Cd(II) (0.6 −71.4 μg kg –1 in 100 % prawn but 63 % fish), methylmercury (MeHg, 0.5 −7.1 μg kg –1 in 100 % fish but 61 % shrimp), Pb(II) (0.4 −1.0 μg kg –1 in 57 % fish and 39 % prawn), and trimethyltin and triethyltin (0.4 −0.7 μg kg –1 ), which were much lower than the maximum limits in China. Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) up to 0.38 mg kg –1 were main contaminants in sediment while Cd(II) and Pb(II) up to 0.44 mg kg –1 were major contaminants in feedstuff compared with Cd(II), Sn(II), Hg(II), and Pb(II) majored in water at ng L –1 levels. Ecological risks were low in water but high for tributyltin in sediment. Additionally, light bioaccumulation of Cd(II) from sediment for prawn and methylmercury from feedstuff/sediment for crucian and bighead carp was induced. We also found light health risk of triethyl- and trimethyl lead, and Cd(II) (to children) associated with fish/shrimp consumption (edible muscle). This study proved high necessity of chemical-specific assessment, and shall trigger increasing interest to more metallic compounds in a wide range of uncultured and cultured plants and animals.

Sn-Triggered Protein Self-Assembly Photoanode Based on CdS Quantum Dots and Au Nanoparticles for Dual-Electrode Photoelectrochemical Detection of Pb2+

Kun Wang,Yingru Tang,Kangli Xing,Xiaoming Mou,Xiaoyan Yang,Zhenlan Quan

Protein self-assembly has attracted extensive interest in the field of biomaterials and biomedicine due to its inherent biocompatibility and flexible designability. In this paper, we propose a potential route to generate a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform through Sn-triggered protein self-assembly. Specifically, Sn2+ ion was used to trigger the self-assembly of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form in situ Sn/BSA film on the indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. Then, a CdS thin film as a PEC active material was electrodeposited on the Sn/BSA modified ITO electrode. The hybrid Sn/BSA film was demonstrated to stabilize the PEC response of the CdS. A dual-electrode PEC cell comprised a graphene oxide (GO)-modified photocathode and a Sn/BSA hybrid film/CdS-loaded photoanode. Pb2+-response deoxyribozymes (DNAzymes) were hybridized with the substrate strands tagged with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) and then immobilized on the photocathode. Upon Pb2+-induced cleavage, Au NP-linked oligonucleotide fragment dislocated from the photocathode surface, resulting in a decrease in the PEC response. The present PEC biosensor showed highly sensitive detection of Pb2+ with a wide detection range from 10.0 fM to 0.1 μM and a low detection limit of 4.0 fM. This work demonstrates that the Sn/BSA hybrid film has potential application prospects in PEC sensing, thereby providing a new way of thinking for the design and development of the bioinspired biosensor.

Superior initiator reactivity and electrochemical properties of In(OTf)3 over Sn(OTf)2 for 1,3-dioxolane based solid polymer electrolyte

Haoyu Deng,Xueting Yang,Hanghang Chen,Dezhan Ye,Xiancai Jiang,Yazhou Chen,Chenyi Wang

The in-situ polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (PDOL) in battery cells has attracted extensive attention, however, the differences of Lewis acid initiators on the DOL monomer conversion (C%) and electrochemical properties has been ignored. Here, it is demonstrated that compare with Sn(OTf) 2 Lewis acid initiator, the gelation of DOL is achieved at the lower addition of In(OTf) 3 . By optimizing their content in the gelation process, their C% are comparable which are 95.7 % and 93.5 % for In(OTf) 3 and Sn(OTf) 2 , respectively. However, the higher ionic conductivity (7.1 × 10 −4  S cm −1 at room temperature), electrochemical window (~4.5 V) and Li + transference number (0.42) are obtained for DOL initiated with In(OTf) 3 , due to its lower molecular weight which is helpful to the intermolecular Li + transport along PDOL main chain; In addition, the Li/Li symmetrical cell of In(OTf) 3 can be stably cycled for >500 h at 3 mA cm −2 , with an over-potential of 178mv. The storage and cycling impedances of half cells further proves the stable interface of In(OTf) 3 initiated DOL toward to lithium metal in comparison with those of Sn(OTf) 2 . Scanning electron microscopy results show a denser and thinner interface in the DOL catalyzed by In(OTf) 3 . Finally, the assembled Li/LiFePO 4 battery delivers specific discharge capacity and capacity retention rates of 115.5mAh g −1 and 85 %, respectively after 300 cycles at 1C. Through the initiator selection, the DOL synthesis and electrochemical properties can be tuned, which further broadens the design idea of PDOL based solid polymer electrolyte.

Unlocking the Myths of Molecular Bonding State in Modulating Oxidation and Anderson Localization for Inorganic Sn/Pb-based Perovskite Solar Cells

Qin Li,Junjie Ma,Xuanchen Xu,Peng Gao,Meng Cai,Mengqi Han,Jing Yang,Yiqiang Zhang,Yanlin Song

The improvement of photovoltaic and stability performance of tin (Sn)-based halide perovskite solar cells is impeded by notorious oxidation issues and Anderson localization. Despite previous implements in antioxidation through the incorporation of Lewis base additives, there still exist ongoing uncertainties surrounding its complex interaction mechanisms. A perplexing phenomenon regarding accelerated oxidation in acrylic acid is discovered that deviates from conventional Lewis base–acid reaction. The underlying insights into the deprotonation of acrylic acid followed by the formation of a “tripod” ionic bonding form are provided, which results in amplifying the delocalization effect of electrons of Sn 2+ . Furthermore, with the assistance of acrylamide and acrolein, synergistic enhancement in terms of the antioxidation and suppression of Anderson localization can be achieved — a concept referred to as “Dual Synergistic Engineering”. This suppresses the oxidation of Sn 2+ and reduces Sn 4+ content by ≈76%. Meanwhile, the diffusion length is prolonged significantly from 195.9 to 458.9 nm. The optimized all-inorganic Sn/Pb-based perovskite solar cells exhibit a power conversion efficiency of above 14% with enhanced stability. These findings provide an alternative viewpoint for comprehending the impact of chemical interaction on oxidation and crystal growth in Sn/Pb-based perovskites.

The core-shell structure of bacteria based C@Sn/Carbon nanotubes exhibits super stable cycling performance for lithium-ion battery anodes

Feng Li,Putao Han,Jun Zhou,Yuhua Yang

Tin-based materials are recognized as a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity, abundant reserves in nature, and suitable low discharge potential. However, their practical application has been hindered by rapid capacity fading during cycling, which is primarily caused by pulverization during severe volume changes. To extend the lifespan of Tin-based anodes, it is essential to mitigate the significant volume alteration associated with the insertion and extraction of lithium ions. In this work, we engineer successfully a simple core-shell structure where Tin-based components are only encapsulated within bacterial cells and compounded with carbon nanofibers (Sn@C/CNT). The bacterial exterior carbon-shells preserve effectively the structural stability of the Sn nanoparticles, suppress their aggregation, and buffer their volume expansion. Additionally, the carbon nanofiber network on the surface, characterized by high electrical conductivity and excellent mechanical flexibility, securely anchor the core-shell structure. This design enhances significantly the electrical conductivity and structural integrity of the overall electrode. When utilized as an anode in lithium-ion batteries, Sn@C/CNT exhibits an outstanding cycling stability and excellent reversible capacity of 798.77 mA h g −1  at 10th cycle, and 736.31 mA h g −1 even after 150 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g −1 .

Sn-Doped Beta Zeolite with Rich Lewis Acidic Sites Enhances Lithium-Ion Dissociation and Transport in PEO-Based Solid Polymer Electrolytes

Chen Liu,Jin Hu,Haichang Zhang,Jiaxin Wu,Chunsheng Shi,Biao Chen,Chunnian He,Naiqin Zhao

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) demonstrate strong electrode adhesion and facile processability, making them promising candidates in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). However, poor ionic conductivity, low Li+ transference number, and insufficient mechanical strength greatly limit their practical application. Zeolite, a porous ceramic material rich in active sites, shows significant potential as a filler in the PEO-based SPEs. In this study, we prepared heteroatomic Sn-Beta zeolite with high Lewis acid activity through a simple two-step postsynthesis process and explored the mechanism of action of metal acidic sites on Li+ dissociation and transport. The Lewis acidic metal sites in the Sn-Beta zeolite effectively weaken the coordination environment of Li+ by binding the O atoms in PEO via metal–oxygen bonds, facilitating the transfer of Li+ along the PEO polymer chains. Moreover, it can promote the dissociation of the lithium salt by anchoring TFSI– anions, resulting in the release of free Li+. The obtained SPE (PL-Sn-Beta) exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 1.40 × 10–3 S cm–1 at 60 °C and a Li+ transference number of up to 0.51. Furthermore, the ordered pore channels of the Sn-Beta zeolite provide uniform Li-ion transport pathways, facilitating homogeneous Li+ deposition. As a result, the lithium symmetric cell with PL-Sn-Beta demonstrates a stable lithium plating/stripping cycle performance for over 2200 h at 60 °C and 0.1 mA cm–2. Meanwhile, the initial discharge capacity of the Li/PL-Sn-Beta/LiFePO4 full cell reaches 145.6 mAh g–1 at 1 C and 60 °C, and the capacity retention rate is 81.5% after 500 cycles. This work provides theoretical insights into the mechanism of zeolite fillers in SPEs as well as new design concepts.

Fabrication of Bioconjugates Clacked Chitosan-Coated SN-38 Liposomal Nanoparticles: Improved Precise Chemotherapy Efficacy in Lung Cancer Cells and Its Apoptosis

Xiaojun Zhang,Wei Sun,Changting Liu

Employing an active targeting method with monoclonal antibodies for chemotherapeutics-loaded nanocarriers represents a promising option to enhance the specific drug delivery and alleviate the detrimental effects of chemotherapeutic agents. Targeted delivery to the human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), which is overexpressed in HER2+ lung cancerous cells, can be accomplished by conjugating nanoparticles with a monoclonal antibody (anti-HER2). We developed trastuzumab (TZ)-conjugated chitosan iodoacetamide (CsIA)-coated liposomal nanoparticles carrying SN-38 (TZ-SN-CsIA LNPs) as a lung-targeted delivery. CsIA was used to develop trastuzumab-clacked nanoparticles (TZ LNPs). The structure, physicochemical characteristics, SN-38 encapsulation, SN-38 release, and anticancer properties of the LNPs were established. The TZ LNPs were spherical, measuring around 77 nm in diameter, and exhibited a positive zeta potential; upon drug incorporation, the diameter of the TZ LNPs enlarged. A sustained, 24-h SN-38 release from the nanocarriers was accomplished. TZ LNPs demonstrated substantial cellular accumulation and markedly enhanced anticancer efficacy against HER2+ Calu-3 lung adenocarcinoma cancer cells compared to the drug solution and unconjugated LNPs. Consequently, TZ-SN-CsIA LNPs may be a potential nanocarrier for HER2+ lung cancer.
