Defect sites on oxide semiconductors play a crucial role in promoting photocatalytiperformance and modulating the bandgap structure of photocatalysts. However, the role of interfacial coordinatively unsaturated defect sites between metal and oxide in photocatalysis is still under debate. So, we designed an experiment to probe the role of interfacial coordinatively unsaturated defect sites. In this work, a series of Ti/TiO2 photocatalysts with varying concentrations of interfacial Ti3+ sites were prepared through an epitaxial growth method under hydrothermal conditions. Through experimental and computational investigations, the roles of interfacial defect sites were discussed in detail. On the one hand, the interfacial coordinatively unsaturated Ti3+ sites could act as visible-light-responsive sites in photocatalytic reactions due to the overlap and hybridization of multiple electronic orbitals. On the other hand, the Ti/TiO2 interface exhibited a certain degree of metallic character near the Fermi level because of the partial delocalization and redistribution of electrons, facilitating the charge migration and separation across the metal-oxide interface. Consequently, the obtained Ti/TiO2 catalysts showed notably enhanced charge transfer efficiency and visible light photocatalytic activity compared to their pristine counterparts. This work may provide a new perspective to interfacial defect engineering in classic metal/oxide heterojunction photocatalysts and figure a more precise direction to synthesize higher effective photocatalysts for environmental governance.

The dielectric properties of titanate-based microwave ceramics are usually degraded by oxygen vacancies induced by prolonged sintering at high temperature. In this study, the activation sintering and improvement of dielectric properties for 0.7CaTi 1-x O 3 -0.3NdAlO 3 ceramics could be achieved by slight adjusting the stoichiometric ratio of Ti 4+ ions at B-site (CTNA, x = 0.0000, 0.0025, 0.0050, 0.0075). As x increasing from 0.0000 to 0.0050, the relative densities, maximum densification rate, and maximum densification rate temperature all increase. This is attributed to the generation of oxygen vacancy defects that can facilitate atomic diffusion. When x further increase to 0.0075, even though the number of oxygen vacancies continues to increase, the substitution of Nd 3+ with larger ionic radius (1.27 Å) at B-site, compared to Ti 4+ (0.605 Å), induce significant lattice distortion. Consequently, the relative densities of CTNA ceramics (x = 0.0075) remains comparable to that of CTNA ceramics (x = 0.0050). The substitution of Ti 4+ by smaller Al 3+ (0.535 Å) at B-site in CTNA ceramics (x = 0.0050) result in a reduced lattice constant and unti cell volume, which is conducive to the reduction of intrinsic loss and the improvement of dielectric properties: ε r = 45.92; Q × f = 43,900 GHz, and τ f = 2.88 ppm/°C.

H 2 O and SO 2 poisoning of cerium-manganese oxide catalysts remains a critical challenge for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by NH 3 . Here we show that Ti doping of CeO 2 induces lattice contraction and structural distortion, promoting the generation of oxygen vacancies, active oxygen species, and stable Ce-O-Ti interfaces. These strain-engineered structural modifications enhances surface Lewis acidity and triggers a downshift of the d-band center, collectively improving low-temperature catalytic activity and resistance to H 2 O/SO 2 poisoning. The optimized Ce 8 MnTi 2.5 O x catalyst achieves over 90% nitrogen oxides removal across a 150–335 °C temperature range. Under 5 vol.% water and 100 ppm SO 2 , it maintains over 98% efficiency for 12 h at 210 °C. Furthermore, during stepwise heating from 150 °C to 240 °C with 5 vol.% H 2 O and 200 ppm SO 2 , initial activity suppression below 180 °C is fully reversed at or above 210 °C, demonstrating temperature-driven regeneration. This study introduces a strain-engineering strategy for designing robust catalysts for low-temperature nitrogen oxides removal.

Superexchange-mediated dual-acceptor sites enable spatial charge separation. • Synergistic single-atom and vacancy engineering creates multifunctional sites. • Cu SA -TO-O V delivered excellent corresponding turnover frequencies of 177.52 h −1 . • The photo-Fenton system exhibited wide pH adaptability and anti-interference. Synchronously and efficiently utilizing photogenerated electrons and holes remains a significant challenge in Fenton-like reaction. Herein, the Cu single-atom (Cu SA ) and oxygen vacancy (O V ) co-modified TiO 2 nanoflake-like catalyst is successfully synthesized. O V modulate the electronic coupling interaction, which is proposed to trigger superexchange -mediated electron transfer from Cu 3 d x 2 − y 2 to Ti 3 d xy via O 2 p y orbitals. Specifically, Cu SA serves as the hole-accepting site for 1 O 2 generation, while O V and Ti 3+ functions as the electron-accepting site for •OH production and contaminant adsorption. The substrate enrichment effect and the free radical/non-radical coupling interaction significantly enhances photo-Fenton catalytic performance, achieving superior sulfanilamide removal efficiency across a broad pH range (3–11) and a high turnover frequency of of 177.52 h −1 . This work not only highlights the potential of active site engineering in designing photo-Fenton catalysts but also advances the development of efficient and sustainable water purification solutions.

To overcome the limited elevated-temperature strength typical of fusion-based additive manufacturing, near-fully dense Ti-6Al-4V specimens were fabricated via solid-state additive friction stir deposition (AFSD). The process induced a pronounced microstructural gradient, with grain sizes ranging from 4.76 μm at the top (dominated by continuous dynamic recrystallization) to 7.62 μm at the bottom (driven by intrinsic thermal cycles). Crucially, the formation of a non-equilibrium substructure—comprising high-density dislocations, stable subgrain boundaries, and deformation twins—contributed to the deformation response through the combined effects of dislocation slip, substructural strengthening, and local strain accommodation. Benefiting from grain refinement and multiple AFSD-induced substructural features, including dislocation accumulation, stable subgrain boundaries, and interface-associated lattice distortion, the as-deposited alloy exhibited superior yield strength compared with the rolled base material at room and intermediate temperatures (400–600 °C). Notably, at 700 °C, the AFSD-processed alloy exhibited a pronounced increase in ductility, with elongation exceeding 140%. This superplastic-like high-temperature response is associated with the fine-grained α/β microstructure and the deformation-induced evolution of a continuous β-phase network, which may enhance interfacial strain accommodation and delay localized failure. Overall, these results suggest that AFSD-induced microstructural and substructural modification provides a promising route for improving the elevated-temperature performance of dual-phase titanium alloys.

A Ti 4+ -doped NiFe-LDH was employed as an electrocatalyst. • It requires overpotentials of 243 and 263 mV at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH and seawater. • Ti 4+ doping modulates the LDH electronic structure, activating the lattice oxygen mechanism. • This modulation significantly improves both electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is kinetically sluggish and unstable, severely limiting its efficiency in water electrolysis, particularly in seawater. Here, we report the growth of Ti-doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets on nickel foam (NF) via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis. The introduction of high-valent Ti 4+ cations effectively modulates the local electronic configuration of the NiFe-LDH host, thereby tending to promote the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) and fundamentally accelerate the OER kinetics. Consequently, the optimal Ti 0.1 NiFe-LDH/NF catalyst exhibits an overpotential of only 243 mV at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, with a Tafel slope of 63.4 mV dec −1 . Importantly, it demonstrates exceptional operational durability, maintaining a current density of 50 mA cm −2 for more than 100 h with a minimal potential increase of just 7 mV. In alkaline seawater, the Ti-doped catalyst shows superior activity and corrosion resistance relative to its undoped counterpart, underscoring its potential for direct seawater electrolysis. This study elucidates the critical role of cation doping in activating the LOM pathway through optimization of the electronic configuration, and offers an effective strategy for developing high-performance and highly stable OER electrocatalysts for both freshwater and seawater splitting. The ubiquitous presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) such as antibiotics and synthetic dyes in aquatic systems necessitates advanced remediation technologies. However, conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes often suffer from severe fouling and rapid flux decline due to their inherent hydrophobicity, severely limiting their long-term applicability. This study presents the rational design of Ti-MOF/CN/PVDF composite membranes via integrated solvothermal synthesis of Ti-MOF/g-C 3 N 4 (CN) heterojunctions and nanoparticle-regulated phase inversion. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, XPS, SEM-EDS, BET, AFM) confirmed the successful fabrication of the heterojunction membrane. XPS and XRD analyses confirmed the formation of covalent bonds at the (Ti-O-N) interface and lattice strain induced by the nanoparticle filler, effectively suppressing PVDF crystallization. Ti-MOF/CN exhibits a unimodal particle size distribution (D50 ≈ 400 nm) and high BET specific surface area (72.44 m 2 g −1 ). Its uniform dispersion in PVDF increases the membrane pore size from 28.1 nm in pristine PVDF to 38.7 nm at 1 wt% Ti-MOF/CN, significantly enhancing the overall porosity. The top-performing M3 composite membrane demonstrated exceptional multifunctionality: it achieved retention rates exceeding 90% for multiple dyes (Rhodamine B, Methyl Blue, Malachite Green) and antibiotics (Tetracycline). Long-term retention experiments were conducted on complex wastewater containing mixed dyes, alongside photodegradation tests under simulated solar radiation conditions (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm −2 ). Results indicate over 95% retention of mixed pollutants. Visible light irradiation significantly enhances the M3 membrane's FRR to 91.6%, further demonstrating the Ti-MOF/CN composite membrane's robust long-term operational stability and self-cleaning capability for photocatalytic degradation of aqueous pollutants.

Poly (amide acid) acts as an interfacial mediator via hydrogen bonding. • PZT content is increased by 2.8 times with an optimized PAA concentration of 8 wt%. • Sintered flexible GFF/PZT composite forms a continuous piezoelectric ceramic network. • The flexible sensor achieves high sensitivity and excellent durability. Flexible piezoelectric composites have attracted increasing interest for sensor applications. However, for flexible fiber-based piezoelectric composites, constructing a continuous ceramic network with high loading and robust interfacial bonding on the fiber fabric remains challenging. In this study, we fabricated flexible glass fiber fabric (GFF)/PZT piezoelectric composites. Poly (amide acid) (PAA) was introduced as a molecular mediator on the GFF, where PAA forms hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl group and acetate groups of the PZT sol, enabling a 2.8-fold increase in PZT loading at an optimized PAA concentration of 8 wt%. The resulting GFF/PZT composite exhibits a continuous ceramic phase and retains good flexibility with a minimum bending radius of 15 mm. After encapsulation with interdigitated electrodes via epoxy resin (Ep), the GFF/PZT/Ep sensor achieves a minimum bending radius as low as 2.5 mm and exhibits enhanced electrical properties: a dielectric constant of 147, a low dielectric loss of 0.01 at 10 3 Hz, and an inverse piezoelectric coefficient of 119.5 p.m./V. As a bending sensor, it delivers a high sensitivity of 7.52 V per unit flexural strain and excellent durability over 1000 cycles. As a vibration sensor, it attains a sensitivity of 211.16 mV/g at 10 Hz and maintains stable output over 10,000 cycles. This work offers a promising strategy for developing flexible piezoelectric composites for energy conversion applications. Download: Download high-res image (1MB) Download: Download full-size image

Nitrate (NO 3 − ), as a major nitrogen oxide, is one of the principal contributors to global water pollution. The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (e-NO 3 RR) not only holds the promise of circumventing the environmental pollution issues associated with NO 3 − but also furthers the recycling of energy resources, paving the way for sustainable development. Herein, we have synthesized composite catalysts with a heterojunction between the bimetallic oxide (NiCoO 2 ) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) on the surface of titanium foam (NiCoO 2 /TiO 2 /Ti) through a two-step reaction. This catalyst delivers a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.1 % and the ammonia yield rate (NH 3 yield) nearing 200 μmol h −1 cm −2 in the e-NO 3 RR. After 24 h of reaction in a 0.1 M KNO 3 solution, the selectivity of NiCoO 2 /TiO 2 /Ti for ammonia (NH 3 ) can reach up to 94.9 %. In conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments, it can be demonstrated that significant interfacial electronic interactions (IEIs) are established at the catalyst interface. Regulating the direction of internal electron transfer within the bimetallic oxide NiCoO 2 via TiO 2 enables the transformation of the NiCoO 2 surface from an electron-rich state to an electron-deficient state. This modulation alters the local electrochemical environment of NiCoO 2 , thereby enhancing its capability for NO 3 − adsorption and activation, and consequently facilitating the e-NO 3 RR process.

Photothermal-driven catalytic conversion of CO 2 into formic acid (HCOOH) offers a promising route for sustainable energy storage and carbon neutrality. However, the efficiency of this process is often limited by sluggish reaction kinetics and rapid charge carrier recombination. This study presents a strategically designed Pd/TiO 2 catalyst—fabricated via impregnation—that enhances CO 2 hydrogenation through improved electron transfer and photothermal synergy. Under simulated solar irradiation (0.15 W·cm −2 ), the optimized 1 wt% Pd/P25 catalyst achieves a CO 2 conversion efficiency of 8.51 % and a solar-to-chemical energy conversion of 7.39 %, with a HCOOH selectivity exceeding 99 %. The HCOOH production rate reaches 25.32 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 , representing a 3.5-fold enhancement over pristine TiO 2 . Through in situ spectroscopy and DFT calculations, Pd sites are identified as dual-functional centers for photon absorption and catalytic activation, reducing the activation energy by 19.8 % compared to pure thermal catalysis. Furthermore, the Pd–Ti interface promotes CO 2 chemisorption by stabilizing the *OCHO intermediate (ΔEads = –3.746 eV). This work demonstrates the effective integration of photo- and thermal energy at metal–oxide interfaces to overcome the activity–selectivity trade-off in CO 2 conversion, providing valuable insights for the design of efficient photothermal catalytic systems.

Magnesium borohydride , Mg(BH 4 ) 2 , is ball-milled with Ti nano-particles. Such catalyzed Mg(BH 4 ) 2 releases more hydrogen than pristine Mg(BH 4 ) 2 does during isothermal dehydrogenation at 270, 280, and 290 °C. The catalyzed Mg(BH 4 ) 2 also exhibits better dehydrogenation kinetics than the pristine Mg(BH 4 ) 2 . Based on kinetics model fitting, the activation energy ( E a ) of the catalyzed Mg(BH 4 ) 2 is calculated to be lower than pristine Mg(BH 4 ) 2 . During partial dehydrogenation , the catalyzed Mg(BH 4 ) 2 releases 4.23 wt % (wt%) H 2 for the second dehydrogenation at 270 °C, comparing to 4.05, and 3.75 wt% H 2 at 280, and 290 °C. The reversibility of 4.23 wt% capacity is also one of the highest for Mg(BH 4 ) 2 dehydrogenation under mild conditions such as 270 °C as reported. 4 cycles of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 dehydrogenation are conducted at 270 °C. The capacities degrade during 4 cycles and tend to be stable at about 3.0 wt% for the last two cycles. By analyzing the hydrogen de/absorption products of the catalyzed sample, Mg(BH 4 ) 2 is found to be regenerated after rehydrogenation according to Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Ti nano-particles can react with Mg(BH 4 ) 2 during ball-milling and de/rehydrogenation. The products include TiH 1.924 , TiB, and TiB 2 , which can improve the dehydrogenation properties of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 from a multiple aspect.

In this work, S-scheme Ti-MOF/Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 heterojunction photocatalysts were developed via an in situ self-assembly strategy, achieving satisfactory interfacial contact, matched band alignment, enhanced charge separation, and redox activity. The optimized Ti-MOF/Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 composite exhibited remarkable photocatalytic performance toward benzyl alcohol oxidation under visible light, achieving > 99 % conversion and selectivity without external oxidants and sacrificial agents. It represents a fourfold enhancement over individual components, while maintaining broad substrate applicability and excellent cycling stability. The S-scheme configuration ensures sufficient oxidation potential compared with conventional Type-II systems. This work addresses challenges of limited bandgap tunability and inefficient carrier transport in selective aromatic alcohol oxidation, establishing a promising strategy for designing efficient lead-free perovskite photocatalysts toward sustainable organic transformations.
