The rapid decay of the charge/discharge capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries due to the sluggish reaction kinetics and the shuttling behaviour of soluble polysulfides significantly restricts their practical application in energy storage systems. Herein, two-dimensional TiN/TiC heterostructures embedded with single tungsten atoms (SWA) are developed and introduced as a modified interlayer (SWA-TiN/TiC) in Li-S battery devices. The SWA-TiN/TiC material has a large specific surface area, which provides a physical barrier while supplying numerous active sites for polysulfides reactions. TiN and TiC both demonstrate excellent electronic conductivity and catalytic activity, which facilitate the conversion of polysulfides. Meanwhile, the uniformly-dispersed SWAs significantly enhance the chemical affinity with polysulfides and accelerate their redox reactions. As a result, the sulfur cathodes coated with the SWA-TiN/TiC interlayer achieve excellent rate performance and long-term cycling stability. An ultrahigh specific capacity of up to 1577.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C is achieved, and even at high sulfur loading (6.25 mg cm −2 ), a high areal capacity of 4.63 mAh cm −2 is obtained. This work highlights the potential of single metallic atoms on non-carbonaceous matrix for the development of high-performance catalysts that can achieve strong polysulfides immobilization for practical applications in lithium-sulfur batteries.

Potential leaching of Co ions could decrease the catalytic activity and cause secondary pollution of water, thereby threatening ecological safety and human health. In response, the in-situ generation of well-dispersed Co 2 SnO 4 and SnO 2 with fine interfacial feature was constructed for PMS activation toward efficient tetracycline degradation and lower cobalt ion leaching feature. The synergistic effect of Co 2 SnO 4 and SnO 2 endowed Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 an outstanding catalytic performance for tetracycline degradation in alkaline condition. Meanwhile, the catalysts can effectively degrade the quinolones, dyes and mixture pollutant solution. The excellent performance can attributed to the in-situ introduction of SnO 2 , which stabilizes the microstructure and provides an effective electronic pathway to enhance the activity of Co 2 SnO 4 in the Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 . In optimized condition, the tetracycline degradation efficiency was enhanced to 94.9% within 20 min and maintained the stability at least four cycles. The degradation rate constant of Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 was 0.149 min −1 , which was about 1.93, 2.98, 11.5 times higher than of Co 2 SnO 4 , Co 3 O 4 and SnO 2 , respectively. Notably, the leaching performance of Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 was greatly suppressed to be 7.45 ug/L, which was lower than that of Co 2 SnO 4 (6.41 mg/L) and Co 3 O 4 (1.12 mg/L). Radical quenching and EPR experiments showed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), rather than hydroxyl active species and sulfate radicals, played a predominating role for PMS activation in the Co 2 SnO 4 -SnO 2 /PMS system. The intermediates and degradation routes for tetracycline degradation were characterized by liquid chromatograph-tandem mass spectrometry. This study expected to provide a novel strategy to construct heterostructural catalysts with lower cobalt ion leaching for the activation of PMS.

Constructing hybrid photocatalysts with advanced structures and controllable compositions is a promising way to improve CO 2 photoreduction performance. In this work, SnS 2 nanosheets are grown on ZnS polyhedron cages to fabricate hierarchical ZnS@SnS 2 double-shelled heterostructured cages. This design integrates ZnS cages and SnS 2 nanosheets into a stable heterostructured hybrid catalyst with a hierarchical double-shelled cage-like architecture, possessing abundant active sites, quick charge separation/migration, and high CO 2 adsorption capacity. Benefiting from these advantages, the optimized hierarchical ZnS@SnS 2 heterostructured cages exhibit significant gas-phase CO 2 photoreduction activity with a CO generation rate of 95.38 μmol g −1 h −1 and 72.4% CO selectivity , which are greatly improved in comparison with those of pure ZnS cages and nanosheet-assembled SnS 2 particles. Furthermore, charge carrier separation efficiency and visible light harvesting ability are further improved by constructing a ZnS@SnS 2 /CdS type-I/type-II complex heterostructured system through surface decoration of CdS quantum dots . The optimized ZnS@SnS 2 /CdS hybrid exhibits a CO generation rate of 155.57 μmol g −1 h −1 and an excellent selectivity of 80.4%. This work is conducive to the design and manufacture of advanced hybrids for solar energy utilization and photocatalytic reactions.

The application of surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) is severely restricted in many fields due to the SEIRA substrates are constructed mainly from expensive noble metals. Therefore, the development of new SEIRA substrates other than the noble metallic ones is very valuable. Here we introduced a new semiconductor SEIRA substrate, the indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles (NPs), to study the SEIRA property. The results demonstrate that the ITO NPs show the SEIRA property and the enhancement is dependent to the doping ratio of the heteroatoms of tin. The ITO NPs with the 5% atomic doping ratio show the highest SEIRA enhancement factor ( EF ), which is about 24. The limit of detection (LOD) of the 1,1′-dicarboxyferrocene (dcFc) molecule was as low as 10 −5 mol/L. The present study proves that the tin-doped indium oxide can be used as a new and inexpensive semiconductor SEIRA substrate. It also proves that the doped semiconductor NPs have strong potentials for being used as emerging SEIRA substrates.

Oblique-incidence reflectivity difference (OIRD) is a compelling technique for real-time, label-free and non-destructive detection of antibody microarray chips, but its sensitivity needs essential improvement for clinical diagnosis. In this study, we report an innovative high-performance OIRD microarray by using poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate] (POEGMA-co-GMA) brush grafted fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) as the chip substrate. The polymer brush enhances the interfacial binding reaction efficiency of targets from the complicated sample matrix due to its high antibody loading and excellent anti-fouling merits; the FTO-polymer brush layered structure, on the other hand, excites the interference enhancement effect of OIRD to achieve enhanced intrinsic optical sensitivity. Synergistically, the sensitivity of this chip is significantly improved compared to rival chips, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 25 ng mL−1 for the model target C-reactive protein (CRP) in 10% human serum. This work explores the tremendous influence of the chip interfacial structure on the OIRD sensitivity and proposes a rational interfacial engineering strategy to boost the performance of the label-free OIRD based microarray and other bio-devices.

The design and synthesis of catalysts loaded with active components has attracted considerable attention in current research owing to their exceptional catalytic performance. In this study, the focus was on the utilization of tin-loaded ZA molecular sieves, possessing remarkable adsorption properties, alongside the catalytic activity of tin. These catalysts were successfully prepared and employed for the synthesis of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) from lactic acid derived from non-food biomass. By modifying the treatment of ZA molecular sieves, the properties of tin-loaded ZA molecular sieves were adjusted. The resulting catalysts exhibited a high tin capacity ranging from 2.29% to 2.81% and featured abundant mesoporous structures, providing a surface area of up to 341.2 m 2 g −1 . Regarding the preparation of PLA, our findings demonstrated that ZA-III-Sn 2+ as a catalyst yielded PLA with a higher weight-average molecular weight ( M w ) up to 2.57 × 10 4 g mol −1 and a higher yield of 65.3% compared to other catalysts. Moreover, the most optimal catalytic effect was achieved by adding the catalyst in three separate stages. Moreover, the amount of catalyst, reaction temperature and reaction time were found to influence both the molecular weight and yield of PLA. This study not only provides a valuable strategy for the preparation of loaded catalysts for PLA production but also offers new insights into the overall preparation process of PLA. © 2023 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

The development of microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) integrating solar photothermal conversion and storage holds significant for solar energy utilization. Herein, this study developed an efficient light-driven phase change microcapsule system by encapsulating paraffin within a brookite TiO 2 shell through sol-gel interfacial polymerization , followed by wrapping titanium nitride (TiN)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposites on the shell surface. The microcapsule system exhibited a regular spherical core-shell structural morphology. The encapsulation of TiO 2 and the introduction of the highly thermal conductivity enhancement phase increased the thermal conductivity of the microcapsule system by approximately 151.5 % compared to pure paraffin while maintaining latent heat of over 135 J·g −1 . Furthermore, TiN/CNTs were combined with the microcapsule shell through hydrogen bonds and shared electron pairs, constructing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-enhanced heterojunction . The microcapsule system demonstrated excellent broad-spectrum light absorption capacity , resulting in a remarkable 112.01 % enhancement in the optimum photothermal conversion efficiency. Concurrently, the degradation rate of MB was increased by 59.52 % due to the synergistic catalytic action of photothermal, semiconductor, and LSPR effects. The microcapsule system also exhibited excellent thermal and cycling stability, with only 1.6 % latent heat loss after 500 thermal cycles. This study provides a promising strategy for developing energy storage microcapsule composite PCMs for the efficient collection and utilization of solar energy.

Two different electrochemical sensors (Hemin-G4/Au/GCE and Hemin-G4/Au/ITO) were developed and applied to explore the electrocatalytic capacity of H2O2 reduction. Due to the excellent catalytic activity of Hemin-G4 and high conductivity of gold nanoparticles, both electrodes show excellent electrochemical performances towards H2O2 with a low LOD (0.67 μM for Hemin-G4/Au/GCE and 0.65 μM for Hemin-G4/Au/ITO), rapid response (<4 s), and high selectivity and sensitivity (314.33 μA mM−1 cm−2 for Hemin-G4/Au/GCE and 322.22 μA mM−1 cm−2 for Hemin-G4/Au/ITO). The two electrodes allow sensitive capture of H2O2 produced by A549 cells. Compared with the conventional method of detection in cell suspensions, an ITO electrode with a large specific surface area and good biocompatibility can provide a promising platform for cell adhesion, so as to realize real-time and in situ detection of extracellular H2O2. The experimental results show that A549 cells can adhere to the surface of the Hemin-G4/Au/ITO electrode and grow well. This is benefitted from the three-dimensional structure of the Hemin-G4/Au hydrogel, which provides a suitable microenvironment for cell adhesion and growth. Furthermore, the in situ detection shows a faster response time than that of in-solution detection. This is because the H2O2 generated by the cells can be directly captured by the ITO electrode, which avoids diffusion from the solution to the electrode. These results indicate that the self-supporting hydrogel modified ITO electrode has great application prospects in basic biomedical research and continuous dynamic surveillance of diseases.

The setaria viridis-like TiN fibers with efficient electromagnetic wave absorption in the whole X and Ku bands were prepared by electrospinning and hydrothermal methods. The results of XRD, Raman, and XPS suggested the presence of cubic TiN phase with TiO x N y solid solution form in fibers. The nanoneedles uniformly grew on the fibers’ surfaces along the (2 0 0) plane of cubic TiN crystal and formed a setaria viridis-like morphology. The bionic hierarchical structure gave rise to a large number of interfaces and pores, which would provide the suitable impedance matching, multiple reflections and scatterings, conductivity loss, and Debye relaxation through the synergistic effect. Hence, the superior absorption properties were achieved in the whole X and Ku bands by adjusting the fibers’ filler loading. The optimal reflection loss could reach −45.8 dB (X-band) at a thickness of 1.38 mm and −47.8 dB (Ku-band) at the thickness of 1.11 mm as the fibers absorbent contents were 20 wt% and 15 wt%, respectively. Furthermore, the effective absorption bandwidth covered the entire X and Ku bands with a thin thickness of 1.0–2.0 mm.

In this study, tin-loaded sulfonated zeolite (Sn-zeolite) catalyst was synthesized for catalysis of raw corncob (75.0 g/L) to 103.0 mM furfural at 52.3% yield in water (pH 1.0) at 170 °C. This corncob-derived furfural was subsequently biotransformed with recombinant E. coli CG-19 cells coexpressing NADPH-dependent reductase and glucose dehydrogenase at 35 °C by supplementary of glucose (1.5 mol glucose/mol furfural), sodium dodecyl sulfate (0.50 mM) and NADP + (1.0 μmol NADP + /mmol furfural) in the aqueous catalytic media (pH 7.5). Both sodium dodecyl sulfate (0.50 mM) and Sn 4+ (1.0 mM) could promote reductase activity by 1.4-folds. Within 3 h, furfural was wholly catalyzed into furfuryl alcohol. By combining chemical catalysis with Sn-zeolite and biocatalysis with CG-19 cells in one-pot, an effective and sustainable process was established for tandemly catalyzing renewable biomass into furfuryl alcohol under environmentally-friendly way.

Garnet-type Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) ceramic electrolytes are promising solid electrolytes in solid-state lithium-ion batteries due to their relatively high ionic conductivity and high stability against lithium metal. However, the poor contact between garnet electrolytes and Li metal causes high interfacial resistance . In this work, we report a strategy to tackle this problem by modifying the surface of the Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) pellets with indium tin oxide (ITO), which is widely used as transparent conductive films in electronic devices. Lithium is tightly soldered on the garnet pellets through rapid reaction with the ITO interlayer . Thus the interfacial resistance of Li/LLZTO dramatically decreases from 1192 Ω cm 2 to 32 Ω cm 2 . Due to the superior ability to homogenize current distribution, the lithiated ITO layer can protect the LLZTO pellets with low relative density (~92%) surviving at a critical current density up to 1.05 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the Li/ITO-LLZTO-ITO/Li symmetric cell shows stable lithium plating/stripping over 800 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 without polarization increasing. Hybrid solid-state Li/ITO-LLZTO/LiFePO 4 cell with good cycle stability and rate performance is also achieved. This work demonstrates that the ITO thin film , through conversion and alloying reactions, can effectively solder lithium anode on garnet-type solid electrolyte for high-performance lithium batteries.

Recently, a novel proof-of-concept oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) based electro-oxidation (EO) process has been developed, which was accomplished by integrating anodic electrochemical oxidation coupled with an in situ electro-peroxone process, by harnessing the anodic by-product O 3 reacted with ORR cathode generated H 2 O 2 . To further enhance EO coupled in situ electro-peroxone, a nickel and antimony doped tin oxide anodic catalyst layer, namely NATO, was fabricated on Ti mesh to improve anodic oxidation and reinforce the generation of O 3 , thus promoting in situ Electro-peroxone. As a result, O 3 generation rate was enhanced by 12.6%. Complete phenol , as a model organic compound, and 95% of TOC removal were achieved, respectively, during ORR-EO. Through kinetics and instrument analysis, results show that the amount of intermediates accumulated during phenol degradation was much less in this Ti/NATO based ORR-EO system than in a traditional EO system. Moreover, 35.7% of the energy consumption was saved for ORR-EO, owing to its reduced applied voltage and the enhanced in situ electro-peroxone process.
