Ferulic acid (FA) reduces starch digestibility but disrupts gel network, limiting its application in gel strength-reliant products. Rice starch was sequentially modified by pullulanase and transglucosidase to generate linear chains with a few branches (LCFBs), which were complexed with 0–2.0% FA to clarify how intermolecular interactions regulated the trade-off between gel strength and digestion resistance. At 0.5% FA, the hardness of modified starch gel remained at 98.2 g, whereas that of native starch gel decreased from 122.0 to 76.1 g. Moreover, the latter could not be shaped into blocks at 1.0% FA. Concurrently, compared with estimated glycemic index (76.6) of native starch gel, modified starch-0.5%FA complexation achieved an 11.10% reduction, while native starch-0.5%FA showed only a 5.61% decrease. The main chains of LCFBs favored V-type complexation with FA, while their branches promoted intermolecular crosslinking to preserve network integrity. This mode increased single helix from 5.92% to 9.40%, and relative crystallinity from 10.47% to 11.73%. In contrast, native starch-0.5%FA gel, despite exhibiting some V-type complex formation, suffered significant loss of ordered structures, which constituted the primary cause of reduced gel strength. Therefore, V-type complexation between LCFBs and 0.5% FA, coupled with branch-mediated crosslinking, effectively preserved gel strength and enhanced digestion resistance. Selective vanadium extraction from ultrahigh Cr/V ratios systems remains a key challenge, particularly preventing the generation of chromium-containing solid waste, which poses substantial environmental and material-handling concerns. To enable a cleaner vanadium recovery process from chromate systems, polyethyleneimine-functionalized α -CrOOH was designed via a two-step synthesis. The resulting PEI@CrOOH, enriched with abundant –NH + =/–NH 2 + - functional groups, integrates the intrinsic structural stability of α -CrOOH with the strong chelation capability of PEI, achieving a high equilibrium adsorption capacity of 120.18 mg·g −1 for V(V). In both Cr–V binary systems and simulated chromite leaching solutions, PEI@CrOOH exhibits pronounced selectivity toward vanadium over chromium. DFT calculations further elucidate the origin of this selectivity, revealing substantially more negative adsorption energies for H 3 V 10 O 28 3 ⁻ (−478.1 kJ·mol −1 ) compared with those for Cr 2 O 7 2 ⁻ (−214.9 kJ·mol −1 ) and HCrO 4 ⁻ (−141.7 kJ·mol −1 ). The adsorption mechanism is primarily attributed to coordination interactions and redox reactions, with additional contributions from electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding. PEI@CrOOH demonstrates excellent reusability, maintaining high adsorption efficiency over multiple regeneration cycles. Moreover, the spent adsorbent can be sustainably upcycled via calcination into high-purity Cr 2 O 3 (99.33%), thus eliminating secondary waste generation. This work presents a technically feasible strategy for the purification and selective extraction of vanadium from chromite leaching solutions.

Antimony (Sb) contamination in water poses significant environmental and health risks due to its high toxicity, persistence and complex redox behavior. Magnetic spinel ferrites (MFe2O4) have shown promise for Sb removal; however, the intrinsic influence of divalent metal species (M2+) in regulating Sb(III)/Sb(V) adsorption performance and interfacial mechanisms remains poorly understood. In this study, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4and NiFe2O4nanoparticles were synthesized and systematically evaluated to elucidate how M2+governs Sb immobilization behavior. Batch adsorption experiments revealed pronounced M–dependent selectivity. MnFe2O4exhibited the highest Sb(III) adsorption capacity (229.89 mg·g−1), whereas NiFe2O4showed superior affinity toward Sb(V) (up to 257.07 mg·g−1). Adsorption kinetics for both Sb species followed pseudo-second-order models, indicating chemically controlled processes. Isotherm analyses indicated predominantly monolayer complexation for Sb(III), while Sb(V) adsorption displayed mixed adsorption characteristics, reflecting surface heterogeneity. Mechanistic investigations based on FTIR and XPS analyses suggest that Sb(III) immobilization is dominated by inner-sphere complexation with surface Fe–O/Fe–OH groups, whereas Sb(V) adsorption involves synergistic coordination with both Fe–O and M–O (Mn–O/Ni–O) functional groups. XPS analysis of Sb-loaded ZnFe2O4revealed the coexistence of Sb(III) and Sb(V) species after Sb(III) adsorption, indicating surface-confined partial oxidation; the extent of solution-phase conversion was not independently quantified. Therefore, the redox process is interpreted as an interfacial phenomenon rather than bulk oxidation in solution. These results clarify that M2+species influence Sb removal behavior by modulating the reactivity of surface functional groups and interfacial redox characteristics, rather than merely altering adsorption capacity. This work provides spectroscopic insight into M-dependent structure–activity relationships in spinel ferrites and offers a theoretical basis for the rational design of magnetic adsorbents for selective and efficient Sb remediation.

Traditional manganese oxide cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries usually suffer from sluggish kinetics and irreversible structure degradation, resulting in poor electrochemical activity and stability. The proposal of Zn 4 SO 4 ·(OH) 6 · x H 2 O-assisted deposition-dissolution reaction model promotes the progress of non‑manganese oxide cathodes in certain systems, but the newly proposed model is of limited applications. Based on the model, exploiting high-quality cathodes and feasible performance regulation strategies are essential for the advancement of zinc batteries. Herein, a feasible method is proposed to realize in-situ substitution of Co, In, Zn, and V heteroatoms in Fe 3 O 4 with N-doped carbon coated via the assistance of a Fe-based metal organic framework precursor. The in-situ adulterated metal heteroatoms are proved to have distinct effects on electron structure regulation, triggering more active electron transfer, thus enhancing the efficient interactions with charge carriers. Moreover, the polydopamine derived N-doped carbon shell and unique hollow bipyramidal hexagonal prism structure provide abundant active sites and guarantee sufficient space for electrolyte transport. The hollow structures could homogenize flux distribution and electric field distribution, facilitating high-efficiency and stable energy storage. Consequently, the electrochemical activity, kinetics, and stability could be remarkably optimized. In addition, electrochemical performance improvement mechanisms triggered by in-situ multiple heteroatoms substitution and structure design are revealed by systematic characterizations, computations, and simulations. This study proposes a feasible electron structure regulation strategy triggered by in-situ multiple heteroatoms substitution for non-MnO 2 cathode design, which is of great importance for the development of zinc batteries.

Vanadium-based catalysts face challenges in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) due to the instability of expensive V(IV) and the weak catalytic activity of V(V). This study, leveraging the strong reducing ability of hydroxylamine (HA), developed the HA/V 2 O 5 /peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system. Under the condition of 100 μM PMS and 0.2 g/L V 2 O 5 , the addition of 200 μM HA accelerated the vanadium (IV)/(V) redox cycle, thereby increasing the degradation efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from 18.3 % to 98.3 %. HO • was identified as the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) by quenching and probe experiments in the system, which was capable of non-selectively and efficiently degrading a wide range of micro-pollutants. Additionally, the degradation pathways and intermediate products of SMX and HA were investigated. HA was primarily converted into environmental friendly N 2 and NO 3 − , and significant reductions in the bioaccumulation factor, developmental toxicity, and mutagenicity of most SMX intermediate products were achieved. Finally, a comparative study evaluated the activation efficiency of natural vanadium‑titanium magnetite (VTM) and synthetic vanadium oxides in practical application scenarios, highlighting the high efficiency, stability and low cost of VTM compared to other reported catalysts.

A simple and efficient method using dual-cloud point extraction (dual-CPE) coupled with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was developed for the speciation of inorganic arsenic [As(III) and As(V)]. In first step of dual-CPE, As(III) formed a hydrophobic complex with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (As-APDC), and was subsequently entrapped by the Triton X-114 surfactant-rich phase at pH 5.0, whereas As(V) remained in the bulk supernatant. The surfactant-rich phase containing the As(III)-APDC complex was treated with a 2.0 mol L −1 of nitric acid , and As(III) was back extracted into the aqueous phase at the second cloud point extraction stage before ICP-OES detection. The As(V) concentration was calculated by subtracting the concentration of As(III) from the total inorganic arsenic concentration after reducing As(V) to As(III) by thiourea . Different factors affecting the extraction of As(III) were investigated in detail. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limit for As(III) was 0.72 ng mL −1 along with the relative standard deviation of 3.5% ( C = 10.0 ng mL −1 , n = 5). The calibration curve was linear in the range of 2.0–50.0 ng mL −1 . This method was validated against the certified reference material (GSBZ 50004-88), and applied for the speciation of inorganic As(III) and As(V) in the spiked snow water sample.

Although light-assisted ferrate (Fe(VI)) activation offers an activator-free strategy for micropollutant abatement, how visible light generates Fe(V)/Fe(IV) remains unclear at the molecular level. Here, five narrow-band LEDs (440–525 nm) were used to link Fe(VI) photochemistry with pollutant oxidation kinetics and iron-species contributions. At 440 nm, Vis-LED/Fe(VI) degraded 79.6–99.3% of six electron-rich micropollutants within 3 min, increasing rate constants by up to 4.3-fold relative to Fe(VI). Scavenging experiments and kinetic modeling identified Fe(V) and Fe(IV) as the dominant reactive species, together accounting for over 96% of diclofenac sodium (DCF) degradation. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations showed that visible excitation induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), which elongated a Fe-O bond from 1.654 to 2.025 Å and generated an Fe(V)-oxyl excited state that abstracted a hydrogen atom from water to give Fe(V). The apparent quantum yield of Fe(VI) decomposition decreased from 0.140 to 0.104 mol einstein −1 as wavelength increased from 440 to 525 nm, consistent with the charge-transfer component being photochemically productive. The system performance improved with light intensities and Fe(VI) concentrations, but declined under alkaline conditions and in humic-acid-rich water. These results establish visible-light activation of Fe(VI) via LMCT and identify Fe(V)/Fe(IV) as the oxidants responsible for micropollutant abatement.

A magnetic chitosan/TiO2 composite material (MCT) was developed. MCT was successfully synthesized by a one-pot method using chitosan, TiO2, and Fe3O4. The absorption equilibrium time of MCT was 40 min in absorbing vanadium(V), the optimal adsorption pH was 4, and the maximum adsorption capacity of vanadium(V) was 117.1 mg g−1. The spent MCT was applied to photocatalytic reactions for reutilization. The decolorization rates for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) by new and spent MCT were 86.4% and 94.3%, respectively. The new and spent MCT exhibited absorption bands at 397 and 455 nm, respectively, which showed that the spent MCT was red-shifted to the cyan light region. These results indicated that the forbidden band widths of the new and spent MCT were about 3.12 and 2.72 eV, respectively. The mechanism of the degradation reaction showed that the hydroxyl radicals as oxidants in the spent MCT mediated the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. In addition, the superoxide anion radical formation of hydroxyl radicals was the main reaction, and the hole generation of hydroxyl radicals was the subordinate reaction. The N-de-ethylated intermediates and organic acids were monitored by MS and HPLC.

The performance of planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is closely linked to the charge extraction and transfer in electron transporting layers (ETLs). To achieve a good control of the photoelectric properties of TiO2 ETLs, we introduce amino trimethylene phosphonic (ATMP) acid into the chemical bath deposition (CBD) process of TiO2 films. ATMP can effectively control the crystal growth of TiO2 particles to get an optimized ETL with preferable band energy and surface topography, which is beneficial for the energy level alignment and interface contact between the ETL and perovskite active layer. Compared to the control devices, the open circuit voltage (VOC) of PSCs with ATMP–TiO2 is increased from 1.17 V to 1.19 V, achieving a higher average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.10%. The enhanced performance of ATMP–TiO2 PSCs is attributed to suppressed defects and well-matched energy level alignment at the perovskite/ETL interface, efficiently facilitating charge carrier extraction and electron transport. This work sheds light on designing an efficient ETL by tuning the precursor solution with environmental and inexpensive modifiers toward PSCs exhibiting outstanding performances.

N-doped carbon-supported titanium nitride (TiN/NC) is considered promising for its application in Zn-air batteries. However, the performance of TiN/NC cannot meet the practical application. To solve this problem, the catalytic activity and stability of the catalyst can be improved by introducing the second metal element V. In this paper, a high-performance catalyst (Ti x V 1−x N/NC/C) was prepared by supporting titanium-vanadium binary transition metal nitride nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped carbon. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the electronic, atomic and microstructure of titanium nitride nanoparticles can be properly tuned by introducing V ions , which is beneficial to tune the adsorption/adsorption of oxygen intermediates on titanium nitride nanoparticles and decreasing the potential of the rate determining step, thereby increasing the catalytic activity. The Ti x V 1−x N/NC/C composite exhibits excellent ORR performance with an onset potential (E onset ) and limiting current density of 0.91 V (vs. RHE) and 4.90 mA∙cm −2 , respectively. The Ti 0.85 V 0.15 N/NC/C-based Zn-air battery exhibits the power density of 124.78 mW·cm −2 , open circuit voltage of 1.34 V and high specific capacity of 731.38 mAh·g −1 . More importantly, this work has deepened the understanding of the TMN-based catalytic mechanism and paved the way for enhancing the catalytic performance of TMN-based catalysts.

The design and fabrication of advanced cathode materials with excellent electrochemical properties to match the Zn anode is crucial for the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein the synthesis of MIL-88B(V)@rGO composites is reported, in which MIL-88B(V) nanorods are anchored on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets, as cathode for ZIBs, where the graphene oxide induces the formation of small-size nanorods instead of typical prism morphology. During the initial charge/discharge process, the cathode undergoes an in situ irreversible transformation from MIL-88B(V) to amorphous V 2 O 5 that acts as active site for the subsequent Zn 2+ insertion/extraction. The hierarchical structure of the composites and the amorphous V 2 O 5 provide abundant channels and active sites for Zn 2+ diffusion and adsorption. The density functional theory calculation reveals that the rGO sheets have two functions, i.e., to improve the conductivity and to reduce the Zn 2+ migration energy barrier. Consequently, the MIL-88B(V)@rGO cathode exhibits an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 479.6 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 and good rate performance of 263.6 mAh g −1 at 5000 mA g −1 , which are superior to metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) cathodes reported in literature. This work may shed a new light to the design and fabrication of MOFs-based cathodes for aqueous ZIBs.
