Photothermal catalytic conversion of CO2 with H2O has exhibited improved performance in solar-to-chemical (STC) energy conversion efficiency. However, the limited rate of photocatalytic half reactions has generally hindered the full exploitation of solar energy. To address this issue, we developed a CeO2/WO3 catalyst to facilitate the photoconversion process. Under concentrated light irradiation, the energy conversion efficiency of STC was increased to 0.356 ‰, which is 27.9 times higher that under non-concentrated light irradiation. The product amount of C2H4 increased from 4.36 µmol·g-1·h-1 to 124.21 µmol·g-1·h-1, representing a 27.5-fold increase. This success could be attributed to the photo-thermal synergistic effects which provided the photoexcited carriers with additional kinetic energy. Besides, the abundance of active sites at the heterojunction interfaces shortened the charge transfer distance and facilitated C-C coupling. This research contributes to the efficient and environmentally friendly use of solar energy to drive CO2 conversion with photothermal catalytic systems, and highlights the critical importance of heterojunction interfaces during the photocatalytic reactions.

To utilize near-infrared (NIR) light within the solar energy spectrum, we have engineered an advanced composite of NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+@g-C3N4@WO3@MXene (denoted as NYT@g-C3N4@WO3@MXene) capable of absorbing NIR light to facilitate photocatalytic reactions. This environmentally benign system integrates semiconductor heterostructures (g-C3N4 and WO3) with upconversion nanoparticles (NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+, abbreviated as NYT) and Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. Experimental validation demonstrated exceptional performance in antibiotic remediation, with the composite achieving 86.3% tetracycline decomposition over 12 hours under NIR irradiation through synergistic mechanisms, while also exhibiting good cycling stability. The enhanced photocatalytic activity arises from collaborative effects between upconversion luminescence, optimized charge transfer pathways within the heterojunction architecture, and the visible light absorption characteristics of MXene.

As a transition-metal oxide semiconductor with variable tungsten valence states and abundant oxygen vacancies, WO3−x has attracted broad interest because its localized surface plasmon resonance performance can be tuned via controlling the concentration of oxygen vacancies. In this work, Cs-doped WO3−x nanosheets (Cs-WO3−x) were synthesized by solvothermal method. Subsequently, Cs-WO3−x were further annealed in hydrogen and air atmosphere, respectively, forming a compact, highly crystalline surface layer (with thickness of ∼14 nm) on the surface while retaining abundant oxygen vacancy defects in the center region (denoted as a-Cs-WO3−x). As a proof-of-concept, the as-prepared nanosheets were employed as light harvesting materials in photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO), a-Cs-WO3−x nanosheets demonstrate significantly improved degradation efficiency with respect to WO3−x and Cs-WO3−x counterparts. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the hot-carrier transfer routes, which relies on not only direct electron transfer but also the more efficient plasmon-induced resonant energy transfer pathway. This work develops new pathway and provides important insights into the regulation of oxygen vacancies.

Inverse opal photonic crystals (IOPC) have great potential in electrically driven device because of their fast response and excellent electrochromic properties. Nevertheless, the conventional IOPC comprises 74% air, which restricts the range of color-changing. Herein, high-WO 3 -proportion IOPC for the tunable and wide-range electrically driven structural color-changing device via a two-step filling method is fabricated. By utilizing PS@SiO 2 sphere-assembled opal as sacrificial templates, the filling proportion of WO 3 is significantly enhanced by utilizing the polymer that can swell in (NH 4 ) 6 H 2 W 12 O 40 solution to fill the etched regions of the SiO 2 layer. The fabricated devices exhibit a broad color gamut, enabling a wide color-changing from 653 nm to 430 nm. The fastest color-changing rate reached 193 nm −1 s under a reverse voltage of 3.9 V. Moreover, the device has excellent stability, maintaining superior color-changing capability in 100 cycles. The patterned device significantly enhances its integration, thereby facilitating practical applications.

A rapid and highly sensitive detection of harmful gas molecules is crucial in artificial olfaction (electronic nose), which plays a significant role in areas such as environmental monitoring and healthcare. However, it remains a significant challenge to construct highly sensitive molecular sensors with fast response at room temperature due to the limitations in structures and properties (e.g., porosity, crystallinity, and carrier mobility) of the sensing materials. Herein, this study proposes a facile method to enable highly crystalline mesoporous WSe2/WO3 (m-WSe2/WO3) semiconductor heterostructures through controllable interfacial self-assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters and amphiphilic block copolymers combined with a thermal-assisted conversion process. It allows uniform pore size, open channels, large specific surface area, highly crystalline framework, and abundant transition metal chalcogenide/metal oxide heterojunction interfaces. The m-WSe2/WO3-based chemiresistive semiconductor sensor achieves efficient detection of NO2 at room temperature, including ultrafast response (5 s), high selectivity (SNO2/Sgas > 5), high sensitivity (62.5%@50 ppm), low detection limit (50 ppb), and long-term stability (>30 days). Thanks to the synergistic improvement of sensing dynamics between mesostructure and heterojunction, such a few-second response time has been reduced by half of the reported values in most existing counterparts based on two-dimensional materials. Our work paves the way for the application of high-performance and cost-effective molecular sensors in artificial olfaction, electronic skins, and wearable integrated circuits at room temperature.

Nowadays, films with antibacterial activity and applied for freshness monitoring by colorimetric response have been drawing growing attention in food packaging. However, the development of versatile antibacterial and colorimetric agents is still highly desirable. Herein, WO3 nanorods are incorporated in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to develop a novel composite film with photothermal antibacterial activity and freshness monitoring faculty. The interaction between WO3 nanorods and PVA is due to hydrogen bonds. Compared with the PVA film, the presence of WO3 nanorods can significantly enhance the mechanical and barrier properties; typically, the target film (WO3/PVA)4 shows an increase in tensile strength by 52.7% and Young’s modulus by 400.0% and a decrease in oxygen permeability by 72.4% and water vapor permeability by 66.9%. The films demonstrate a WO3 content-dependent antibacterial activity. Under irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR808), the synergistic effect of physical damage, oxidative stress, and temperature increase markedly improves the antibacterial activity of (WO3/PVA)4, showing an antibacterial efficiency of ∼90% against Escherichia coli or beyond 90% against Staphylococcus aureus. The incorporated WO3 nanorods demonstrate lower cytotoxicity toward the model cells of human colon cancer cell line HT-29. The (WO3/PVA)4 film exhibits colorimetric response to H2S and can also be used for pork freshness monitoring as an indicator.

Montmorillonite (Mnt)-based solid acids have a wide range of applications in catalysis and adsorption of pollutants. For such solid acids, the acidic characteristic often plays a significant role in these applications. The objective of the current study was to examine the effects of H 3 PO 4 -activation and supporting WO 3 on the textural structure and surface acidic properties of Mnt. The Mnt-based solid acid materials were prepared by H 3 PO 4 treatment and an impregnation method with a solution of ammonium metatungstate (AMT) and were examined as catalysts in the dehydration of glycerol to acrolein. The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible (DR UV-Vis) spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD), diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (DR FTIR) spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine, and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. The phosphoric acid treatment of Mnt created Brönsted and Lewis acid sites and led to increases in specific surface areas, porosity, and acidity. WO 3 species influenced total acidity, acid strength, the numbers of Brönsted and Lewis acid sites, and catalytic performances. A high turnover frequency (TOF) value (31.2 h −1 ) based on a maximal 60.7% yield of acrolein was reached. The correlation of acrolein yield with acidic properties indicated that the cooperative role of Brönsted and Lewis acid sites was beneficial to the formation of acrolein and a little coke deposition (<3.3 wt.%). This work provides a new idea for the design of solid acid catalysts with cooperative Brönsted and Lewis acidity for the dehydration of glycerol.

In this study, WO 3 nanorods were synthesized via acid-induced and hydrothermal methods, and WO 3 /CN composites were prepared through simple thermal copolymerization. This was achieved with the objective of enhancing the formaldehyde degradation efficiency and photocatalytic dye degradation capacity of graphite-enhanced carbon nitride (CN). The composite material degraded formaldehyde 90.3% under 4 h of light irradiation, exhibiting a degradation rate that is 3.57 times that of pure CN. At the same time, the degradation of RhB was basically completed after 40 min of illumination, and the degradation rate was 3.92 times that of pure CN. The augmented photodegradation activity is ascribed to the synergistic effect of Z-type heterojunction formation and oxygen vacancy existence. This enhancement in light absorption capacity is achieved by means of an effective separation of photogenerated carrier under visible light irradiation. Moreover, oxygen vacancies furnish an abundance of active sites, thereby reducing carrier migration distances and enhancing photocatalytic activity through the promotion of carrier separation. In addition, the catalyst demonstrates exceptional stability and reproducibility, maintaining its performance over a period of four cycles.

Pd-based materials have received remarkable attention and exhibit excellent H2 sensing performance due to their superior hydrogen storage and catalysis behavior. However, the synergistic effects originated from the decoration of Pd on a metal oxide support to boost the sensing performance are ambiguous, and the deep investigation of metal support interaction (MSI) on the H2 sensing mechanism is still unclear. Here, the model material of Pd nanoparticle-decorated WO3 nanosheet is synthesized, and individual fine structures can be achieved by treating it at different temperatures. Notably, the Pd-WO3-300 materials display superior H2 sensing performance at a low working temperature (110 °C), with a superior sensing response (Ra/Rg = 40.63 to 10 ppm), high sensing selectivity, and anti-interference ability. DFT calculations and detailed structural investigations confirm that the moderate MSI facilitates the generation of high mobility surface O2– (ad) species and a proper ratio of surface Pd0–Pd2+ species, which can significantly boost the desorption of intermediate PdHx species at low temperatures and contribute to enhanced sensing performance. Our work illustrates the effect of MSI on sensing performance and provides insight into the design of advanced sensing materials.

Integration of non-noble transition metal oxides with graphene is known to construct high-activity electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reduction (OER). In order to avoid the complexity of traditional synthesis process, a facile electrochemical method is elaborately designed to engineer efficient WO 3- x /graphene (photo-)electrocatalyst for OER by a two-electrode electrolysis system, where graphite cathode is exfoliated into graphene and tungsten wire anode evolves into VO-rich WO 3- x profiting from formed reductive electrolyte solution. Among as-prepared samples, WO 3- x /G-2 shows the best electrocatalytic performance for OER with an overpotential of 320 mV (without iR compensation) at 10 mA/cm 2 , superior to commercial RuO 2 (341 mV). With introduction of light illumination, the activity of WO 3- x /G-2 is greatly enhanced and its overpotential decreases to 290 mV, benefiting from additional reaction path produced by photocurrent effect and extra active sites generated by photogenerated carriers (h+). Characterization results indicate that both VO-rich WO 3- x and graphene contribute to the efficient OER performance. The activity of WO 3- x for OER is decided by the synergistic effect between VO concentration and particle size. The graphene could not only disperse WO 3- x nanoparticles, but also improve the holistic conductivity and promote electron transmission. This work supports a novel method for engineering WO 3- x /graphene composite for highly efficient (photo-)electrocatalytic performance for OER.

Pulsed discharge plasma (PDP) induced complex catalysis for synergetic removal of thiamphenicol (TAP) was investigated using graphene-WO 3 -Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites. The prepared samples were characterized systematically in view of the structure and morphology, chemical bonding state, optical property, electrochemical property and magnetic property. Based on characterization and TAP degradation, the catalytic performance followed: graphene-WO 3 -Fe 3 O 4 >graphene-WO 3 >WO 3 , and the highest removal efficiency and kinetic constant could reached 99.3% and 0.070 min -1 , respectively. With increase of catalyst dosage, the removal efficiency firstly enhanced and then declined. Lower pH value was beneficial for TAP degradation. The prepared graphene-WO 3 -Fe 3 O 4 owed higher stability and lower dissolution rate of iron ion. The rGO-WO 3 -Fe 3 O 4 could decompose O 3 and H 2 O 2 into more ·OH in PDP system. The degradation intermediates were characterized by fluorescence spectrograph, LC-MS and IC. Based on the detected intermediates and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) analysis, degradation pathway of TAP was proposed. Besides, the toxicity of intermediates was predicted. Finally, catalytic degradation mechanism of TAP by PDP with graphene-WO 3 -Fe 3 O 4 was summarized.

To effectively decompose the organic dyes in wastewater, a novel all-solid state Z-scheme In 2 O 3 /WO 3 heterostructured photocatalyst was successfully prepared by loading In 2 O 3 nanoparticles onto WO 3 nano-needles through a two-step hydrothermal–solvothermal method. The phase structures, morphologies, chemical compositions, and optical adsorption properties of these photocatalysts were characterized in detail. In the Z-scheme photocatalytic system, the built-in internal electric field can accelerate the recombination of useless photo-generated holes on the VB of In 2 O 3 and electrons on the CB of WO 3 . The retaining photo-generated charge carriers on the CB of In 2 O 3 and VB of WO 3 possess strong redox ability. Therefore, the In 2 O 3 /WO 3 heterogeneous photocatalysts exhibited remarkably improved photocatalytic activity toward degradation of organic dyes and tetracycline hydrochloride compared to pure WO 3 and In 2 O 3 semiconductor materials under visible-light irradiation. The recycling experiments showed that Z-scheme In 2 O 3 /WO 3 heterogeneous photocatalyst could still degrade 86.6% of methylene blue and 86.4% of rhodamine B even after three cycles, confirming its high photo-stability. The trapping experiments demonstrated that photo-generated holes and ·O 2 − were the predominant active species for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes. Based on the experimental results, a possible photocatalytic mechanism of Z-scheme In 2 O 3 /WO 3 heterostructure was proposed. This investigation provided a novel approach for construction of efficient heterostructured photocatalysts for wastewater purification.
