A series of bi-component nonylphenol alkyl sulphonate surfactants with different alkyl chains (C 12/ n -NPAS, n = 8, 10, 14, 16) were synthesized through sulphonation-alkylation-neutralization, using a mixture of linear alpha olefins as raw materials. The chemical structures were characterized by FTIR and ESI-MS. The purity values measured by the two-phase titration method were all higher than 0.96 g/g (96 wt%). The effects of the raw materials composition on salinity tolerance, adsorption, and emulsification properties were also investigated. There is marked adsorption amount variation for bi-component surfactants with a strong difference of carbon number of alkyl groups. The salinity tolerance of C 12/n -NPAS is about 40 g · L −1 of NaCl, and 0.65 g · L −1 of CaCl 2 . Compared with petroleum sulphonates (14 g · L −1 of NaCl, 0.08 g · L −1 of CaCl 2 ) and LAS (22 g · L −1 of NaCl, 0.37 g · L −1 of CaCl 2 ), NPAS surfactants show a low adsorption, excellent salinity tolerance, and emulsion stability.

Bismuth (Bi) is a potential cathode material to drive the development of Gd extraction by molten salt electrolysis. However, study on the electrolytic reduction of Gd by Bi electrode in melts has not receive sufficient attention and understanding. Therefore, in this work, the electrochemical reactions, kinetic processes and thermodynamic properties in the electrolytic extraction of Gd were investigated by various electrochemical methods. The electrochemical results showed that only two Gd–Bi alloys were formed in the electrode reaction. Moreover, the exchange current density and activity coefficient during electrolysis were determined by galvanostatic pulse (GP) and Coulomb titration, respectively. The temperature dependence of both exchange current density and activity coefficient was further revealed. Finally, Gd was successfully extracted in the form of alloys through potentiostatic electrolysis.

Construction of heterojunction can inhibit the recombination of electron holes and improve the sunlight absorption, thus improving the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. In this research, Bi@BiOBr/ZnO coatings are in-situ grown on nickel foam by a facile hydrothermal method . Before coating deposition the nickel foam surface is modified under different radiofrequency plasma atmospheres (O2, H2/Ar, Ar, CH4) in pulsed mode. The plasma treating effects on the coating morphology, crystallization, chemical and photocatalytic properties are investigated. It is found that various morphologies of Bi@BiOBr/ZnO coatings have been grown on the plasma-treated nickel foam surface by using the different plasma atmospheres. The polycrystalline structure including Bi, BiOBr and ZnO phases has been identified for the different coatings. The photocatalytic mechanism includes the SPR effect of metal Bi which can inhibit the recombination of electron holes and heterojunction structure of BiOBr–ZnO has good effects on the photodegradation performance of MO solution under visible light .

Graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has shown great potential for antibiotic wastewater treatment due to its unique electronic structure and corresponding to visible light. In this study, a series of Bi/Ce/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts with different doping amount were developed by direct calcination method for Rhodamine B and sulfamethoxazole photocatalytic degradation . The experiment result shows that the photocatalytic performance of Bi/Ce/g-C 3 N 4 catalysts were better than that of single component samples. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the degradation rates of RhB (20 min) and SMX (120 min) by 3Bi/Ce/g-C 3 N 4 reached 98.3% and 70.5%, respectively. The theoretical calculation results of DFT show that after Bi and Ce doping modification, the band-gap width of g-C 3 N 4 is reduced to 1.215 eV and carrier migration rate is greatly improved. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the capture of electrons after doping modification, which inhibition of photogenerated carriers recombination and reduced the gap width. The cyclic treatment experiment of sulfamethoxazole showed that Bi/Ce/g-C 3 N 4 catalysts had good stability. Ecosar evaluation and leaching toxicity test showed that Bi/Ce/g-C 3 N 4 can be safely used for wastewater treatment. This study provides a perfect strategy for modifying g-C 3 N 4 and a new way to improve the photocatalytic performance.

Si 3 N 4 is a promising material for heat dissipation substrate due to its excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. However, its application is limited by the difficulties in surface metallization. In this work, surface metallization of Si 3 N 4 ceramic substrate is realized by thick film method for the first time. Conductive silver paste containing Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -ZnO glass frit as glass binder was prepared, and high-performance silver thick films were formed on Si 3 N 4 ceramic surface. The mechanical and electrical properties of silver films were significantly promoted with increasing sintering temperature, and silver films with high shear strength of 23.35 MPa and low resistivity of 3.41 μΩ·cm were obtained when sintered at 600 °C. In the meanwhile, the silver films exist high reliability under thermal cycles. The bonding between the silver thick film and Si 3 N 4 ceramic substrate was considerably enhanced as a result of interfacial reaction, forming Bi 2 Si 2 O 5 phase at the interface during sintering process. The formation mechanism was discussed and it is of great significance for the interfacial design in future studies. The results suggest that thick film method is a promising technology for obtaining high-quality surface metallization for Si 3 N 4 ceramic substrate. Graphical abstract

Outdoor equipment can suffer from functional failure in winter due to ice accumulation. Although functional materials are widely recognized as promising candidates for anti-icing and de-icing applications, ice inevitably accretes on surfaces at extremely low temperatures and high humidity. If surfaces display reversible superhydrophobic and slippery performance, similar to Lotus leaves and fish skin, it will significantly improve the anti-icing and de-icing performance. This study proposes a novel type of multifunctional coating that could smartly reverse between superhydrophobic and slippery properties on demand. The superhydrophobic coatings with diverse morphologies were obtained by employing different sizes and shapes of nanoparticles . Due to the low adhesion and photothermal properties, the superhydrophobic samples presented good freezing rain prevention and snow-melting performances by outdoor tests in winter. The samples with slippery surfaces were produced by infusing dodecane on the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface. Both the superhydrophobic and slippery surfaces can effectively propel the water droplets, prolong the freezing time and enhance ice removal performance in an extremely cold environment. Therefore, the coated samples with bi-stable states (i.e., superhydrophobic and slippery states) were successfully achieved with the potential to be widely applied under different service environments. This facile strategy will provide the possibility for developing novel materials with smart reversible wettability for anti-icing and de-icing applications.

Background In the field of electronic packaging, Sn-58Bi solder paste is a promising low-temperature option for step soldering. However, the tendency for the Bi-rich phase to coarsen and segregate poses a significant challenge to the long-term reliability of the solder joints. Methods The Sn coated Zn (Zn@Sn) core-shell particles were prepared through a chemical plating process and incorporated into the Sn-58Bi low-temperature solder paste to enhance its reliability. The microstructural and mechanical characteristics of the solder joints were evaluated under thermal cycling and thermomigration conditions to assess their long-term service reliability. Significant findings The addition of Zn lowers the nucleation energy and promotes the refinement of the eutectic structure, avoiding a significant reduction in shear strength after thermal cycling. In thermomigration, the heat transfer Q* of Bi is calculated to be 22.5 kJ/mol. The Zn-rich phases hardly move and are evenly distributed within the solder joints, acting like a barrier to prevent the Bi phase diffusing from the hot end to the cold end.

The bacterial resistance due to the abuse of conventional antibiotics is regarded as a major problem for bacterial-induced infections and chronic wound healing. There is an urgent need to explore alternative antimicrobial strategies and functional materials with excellent antibacterial efficacy. Herein, guanosine monophosphate (GMP) and glucose oxidase (GOD) were coordinated with copper ions to obtain a bi-functional hybrid nanoflower (Cu-GMP/GODNF) as a cascade catalyst for promoting antibacterial efficacy. Besides the efficient conversion of glucose to hydrogen peroxide, the produced gluconic acid by loading GOD can supply a compatible catalytic environment to substantially improve the peroxidase activity for generating more toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). So, the glucose-powered cascade catalytic reaction effectively killed bacteria. Moreover, H2O2 self-supplied by glucose can reduce harmful side effects of exogenous H2O2. Meanwhile, the adhesion between the Cu-GMP/GODNF and the bacterial membrane can enhance the antibacterial efficacy. Therefore, the achieved bi-functional hybrid nanoflower exhibited high efficiency and biocompatibility for killing bacteria in diabetes-related infections.

High capacity, long cycle life, and fast kinetics are highly desired for alloying anodes in sodium ion capacitors (SICs). However, the huge repeatedly volume changes during the alloying/dealloying process cause electrode pulverization , seriously degrading the capacity and cycling stability. To address this issue, we developed a microwave irradiation technology for the in-situ growth of nano-sized Bi uniformly anchored on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The as-synthesized freestanding electrode film effectively retards the pulverization of Bi nanoparticles , enabling fast sodium storage kinetics for high-power performance (278.1 mAh g −1 @ 30 A g −1 ), as well as high-capacity retention of 94% for over 3,500 cycles. The coin-cell type SICs of a Bi/CNTs anode paired with an activated carbon (AC)/CNTs cathode can deliver a maximum energy density of 128.5 Wh kg −1 and a high power density of 12.3 kW kg −1 with a remaining energy density of 85 Wh kg −1 . Additionally, the flexible quasi-solid SICs using a gel electrolyte demonstrated a high volumetric energy density of 21 mWh cm −3 with good cycling stability (90%) for over 1500 cycles. These results show great promise for our developed SICs as the next-generation energy storage to bridge the performance gap between batteries and supercapacitors , as well as for flexible energy storage applications.

Surface strain tuning in a coupled heterostructure efficiently engineers the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts by altering the electronic structures and boosting electron transport. Generally, Bi-based catalysts are more favorable than ZnO for CO 2 electroreduction to formate, but Bi is much more costly than Zn. Herein, a new Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO heterojunction catalyst with porous nanoplate morphology is synthesized through a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide-templated hydrothermal reaction for a highly efficient catalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to produce formate. The Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO catalyst shows a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 92% for formate production at −1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a large partial current density of −200 mA mg Bi
−1 at −1.2 V vs. RHE. More importantly, the mass activity of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO normalized by Bi mass is an approximately 3.1-fold enhancement over that of the pristine Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 at −1.2 V vs. RHE. By coupling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and adsorption spectroscopy measurements, the charge transfer from the Zn atom to the Bi atom through a heterogeneous interface results in an electron-enriched Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 surface, which facilitates CO 2 capture and activation. Meanwhile, compressive stress produced on the catalyst surface helps optimize the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediate, synergistically enhancing the catalytic selectivity and activity of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO for electrochemical CO 2 reduction to formate.

Synthesis of copolymers from carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxides is an important research direction as such processes utilize the abundant greenhouse gas and deliver useful products. Specifically, cooligomers of CO2and propylene oxide (PO) with a non-alternating structure can be used for polyurethane preparation. They are synthesized by employing Zn-Co cyanide catalysts. The application of alternative metal cyanide complexes is interesting from scientific and practical points of view. The purpose of this work was to study the copolymerization of CO2and PO in the presence of Co-Ni cyanide catalysts and chain transfer agents (CTAs) in order to obtain low molecular weight products. Three Co-Ni catalysts with different contents of complexing agents were synthesized, characterized by several analytical methods and applied for this reaction. The complex without complexing agents was chosen for detailed investigation. 1,6-Hexanediol proved to be a more preferred CTA than poly(propylene glycol) and adipic acid. An oligo(ethercarbonate) (Mn= 2560, PDI = 2.5, CO2= 20 mol.%) capped with OH groups was synthesized with relatively high productivity (1320 gPO+CO2/gcatin 24 h) and characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) MS and NMR methods. The main chain transfer routes during the cooligomerization were suggested on the basis of the research results. Keywords:metal cyanide catalyst;cobalt;nickel;carbon dioxide;propylene oxide;copolymerization;chain transfer agent;oligo(ethercarbonate);polyurethanes
