To enhance the stability and adsorption performance of chitosan in Cr(VI)-contaminated acidic wastewater, a novel EDAC-modified-EDTA-crosslinked chitosan derivative (CSEC) was synthesized via a one-pot method with chitosan, 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDAC), and Na 2 EDTA as raw materials. To further improve the mechanical strength and separation performance of CSEC, a novel composite bead (CSEP) of CSEC and imidazolium-functionalized polysulfone (IMPSF) was prepared through a phase inversion method. The chemical composition and microstructure of CSEC and CSEP were characterized by FESEM, FTIR, NMR and XPS techniques. The maximum adsorption capacities of CSEC and CSEP for Cr(VI) were 145.96 and 135.82 mg g −1 at pH 3, respectively, and the equilibrium time for Cr(VI) adsorption by CSEC and CSEP was 5 min and 8 h, respectively. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) by both CSEC and CSEP was exothermic and spontaneous. Compared to CSEC, CSEP has significantly enhanced resistance to interference from coexisting anions. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) by CSEP might involve redox reaction as well as electrostatic attraction between Cr(VI) oxyanions and various nitrogen cations, including protonated amino groups, guanidinium groups, protonated tertiary amine groups, and imidazolium cations. The CSEP beads have potential application value in the treatment of acidic wastewater containing Cr(VI).

Advanced reduction processes (ARPs) have become hotspot because of their fast and efficient features in pollutant treatment. In this study, a novel ARP was raised through the assistance of biological wastewater degradation solutions (PDs), to completely reduce Cr(VI). Enterobacter cloacae YN-4, which could completely degrade 1500 mg/L phenol within 72 h, was isolated and identified. While, the content of organic acids and their derivatives in PDs was extremely high (74.76 %). After the combination of PDs with Fe(III) and UV, 10 mg/L Cr(VI) was completely reduced within 66 min, whose reduction rate of Cr(VI) was stable at various concentrations (10–100 mg/L), which was applicable on electroplating wastewater. In addition, Cr(VI) could be reduced stably (71.63 %) after 10 cycles. Compared with the reported ARPs, herein, the components was complex, which was firstly proposed that simultaneous action of polycarboxylic acids, monocarboxylic acids, amino acids and alcohols could promote and ensure the stable reduction of Cr(VI). Among them, the multispecies radicals·CO 2 - and·O 2- generated in PDs were combined with Fe(II), to co-reduce Cr(VI). This strategy produces a wide variety of radicals, which can provide an alternative pathway for remediation of various heavy metals and organic pollutants.

Cr(VI) in chromium-containing industrial wastewater, which is highly toxic and difficult to degrade, brings great challenges to the treatment of industrial wastewater. However, conventional chromium removal methods suffer from low efficiency and secondary contamination. This study demonstrates that the micelle-enhanced nanofiltration (MENF) process is an effective strategy for the removal of Cr(VI). Micelles generated from two commonly used cationic surfactants (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC)) were capable of complexing with Cr(VI), resulting in the formation of aggregates with larger hydrodynamic diameters that were effectively retained by the membrane. The results showed that CTAC had a greater performance in removing Cr(VI) compared to CTAB, and the removal rate can reach 98.55 % at an initial concentration of 100 ppm. Meanwhile, the retention rate of surfactant under each condition was more than 96.23 %, which effectively reduced the generation of secondary pollution. Even in the presence of interfering anions, Cr(VI) still had a high affinity for cationic surfactant micelles. In addition, concentration polarization and micelles deposition acted as the main fouling potential during MENF process. This study provides a new insight into technological innovation and environmental protection in the field of wastewater treatment.

To improve the photoluminescence (PL) and increase photostability of carbon dots (CDs), phosphorus doped CDs with bright green emitting were prepared using (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 and m-phenylenediamine (MPD), and terephthalic acid (TA) via a solvothermal synthesis. Compared to undoped CDs (M−CDs), the PL efficiency of P-doped sample (M−6 %P-CDs) created using optimized conditions was improved from 55.1 to 73.9 %. These bright CDs were incorporated in films to test the stability, in which the photostability in liquid and polymer films were improved by 6 and 37 %, respectively. Namely, it is found that P affected the functional groups of on the surface and inside CDs. Phosphorus promoted the dehydration condensation reaction of precursors, increased the structural defects of the CDs, separated the sp 2 structural domains, and retained more oxygen-containing functional groups. In the case of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) instead of MPD, the PL efficiency of P-doped CDs was decreased. This is ascribed to P impeding the polymerization process of OPD. These CDs were used for pH and Cr(VI) ion sensors. P-doping improved the sensitivity of CDs to pH and Cr(VI). The pKa value of sample M−6 %P-CDs was 8.32 which was much lower compared with undoped one (∼1.97). Moreover, P-doped CDs revealed significantly enhanced sensitivity response to Cr(VI). The detection range and detection limit of M−6 %P-CDs for Cr(VI) was 1–130 μM and 0.59 μM, respectively. These results are crucial for the preparation and applications of CDs.

Upcycling Cr-containing sulfate waste into catalysts for CO2hydrogenation reaction benefits both pollution mitigation and economic sustainability. In this study, FeCrO3/Fe2O3catalysts were successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal method using Cr-containing sodium sulfate (Cr-SS) as a Cr source for efficient conversion and stable treatment of Cr. The removal rate of Cr in Cr-SS can reach 99.9% at the optimized hydrothermal conditions. When the synthesized catalysts were activated and used for the CO2hydrogenation reaction, a 50% increase in CO2conversion was achieved compared with the catalyst prepared by impregnation with a comparable amount of Cr. According to the extraction and risk assessment code (RAC) of the Reference Office of the European Community Bureau (BCR), the synthesized FeCrO3/Fe2O3is risk-free. This work not only realizes the detoxification of the Cr-SS but transfers Cr into stable FeCrO3for application in a catalytic field, which provides a strategy for the harmless disposal and resource utilization of Cr-containing hazardous waste.

The remediation of multicomponent wastewater containing high-valent heavy metals and organic pollutants remains a significant environmental challenge. Visible-light-driven photocatalysis holds promise for concurrent pollutants decontamination, but is often hindered by sluggish interfacial charge transfer, rapid electron-hole recombination, and inadequate redox-active carriers. In this work, we present a dual-vacancy-incorporated Bi 2 WO 6 ( V -BWO) photocatalyst, featuring strategically introduced oxygen vacancies (OVs) and bismuth vacancies (BiVs), to overcome these constraints. Integrated theoretical and experimental investigations uncover a defect-mediated charge dynamics mechanism: OVs function as shallow electron traps enabling ultrafast charge capture, while BiVs function as deep relaxation sites that—under Cr(VI)-induced electron quenching—synergistically stabilize holes and extend their lifetime. This synergistic vacancy modulation achieves exceptional performance: a ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation rate constant of 3.3 × 10 −2 min −1 with concurrent Cr(VI)-to-Cr(III) conversion (0.036 mmol/L reduced after 60 min). Notably, the catalyst sustains robust > 80.6 % contaminant removal efficiency in continuous-flow operation across diverse pollutants including CIP, bisphenol A (BPA), and rhodamine B (RhB). These findings elucidate the pivotal role of dual-defect states in tuning carrier dynamics and establishes a robust platform for integrated photocatalytic detoxification of multicomponent wastewater streams.

The extensive global application of chlorpyrifos (CPF) has led to significant environmental accumulation through aquatic systems, presenting substantial risks to ecological integrity and public health. This urgency necessitates advanced detection methodologies with enhanced sensitivity and operational efficiency to ensure environmental safety. Here, we developed a novel photoelectrochemical aptamer sensor utilizing a MIL-101(Cr)&Bi 2 S 3 heterostructure composite. This architecture synergistically integrates the broad-spectrum photon absorption capability of Bi 2 S 3 with the hierarchical porosity and structural stability of MIL-101(Cr), achieving remarkable enhancement in both electron-hole separation efficiency and interfacial charge transfer. The sensing platform was further optimized through aptamer functionalization, which confers precise molecular recognition capabilities while maintaining optimal charge transfer dynamics at the electrode interface. Systematic evaluation demonstrated exceptional analytical performance: a linear detection range spanning four orders of magnitude (0.05–10 μg/mL), ultralow detection limit of 0.022 ng/mL (S/N = 3). The developed methodology provides a versatile framework for adapting to other organophosphorus pesticide detection requirements through modular aptamer replacement.

In this study, a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified magnetic sludge biochar (N@FeBC) was prepared via coprecipitation and impregnation methods for treating Cr(VI) contamination in aqueous and soils. Under conditions of pH 3 and 298 K, N@FeBC exhibited a utmost Cr(VI) removal amount of 82.97 mg/g. The removal behaviors were most accurately characterized the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model. Thermodynamics analysis revealed that the reactions were spontaneous, endothermic, and accompanied by increased system entropy. The removal capacities progressively decreased as the pH rose from 2 to 10, with the optimal removal amounts occurring under acidic conditions. While coexisting cations had negligible effects on Cr(VI) adsorption, anions inhibited the process to varying degrees. Interestingly, humic acid presence improved the efficiencies of Cr(VI) removal. Notably, N@FeBC reduced low-concentrations of Cr(VI) in various water matrices to below the WHO drinking water standard (0.05 mg/L), and retained excellent performance after 15 reuse cycles. In soil stabilization tests, N@FeBC more effectively reduced Cr(VI) toxicity in contaminated soil. Mechanistic investigations revealed that Cr(VI) removal occurred via electrostatic attraction to protonated surface functionalities, partial reduction to Cr(III), and subsequent coordination with functional groups. This study indicates that N@FeBC can serve as an efficient material for removing Cr(VI) contamination.

Cr(VI), a hazardous heavy metal pollutant found in wastewater, exerts detrimental effects on biological system and the human body. Efficient photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) using high-performance materials offers a viable approach for chromium decontamination. In the current work, the defective UiO-66-(OH)2 with enhanced photocatalytic activity was developed by the plasma treatment. These defects not only triggered an expansion in mesoporous domains and increased the BET surface area of the UiO-66-(OH)2 system, thereby exposing more adsorption and photocatalytically active sites, but also created additional electron migration pathways, enhancing the separation of photogenerated e-/h+ pairs. When subjected to an operating power of 15 W, chamber pressure at 20 Pa, and a 300-second treatment period, UiO-66-(OH)2 exhibited a removal efficiency of 83 %. This work explored a novel way for the construction of the defective MOFs and broadened the utilizationation of MOFs in the fields of photoreduction of heavy metal ions in water.

The incorporation of semiconductor materials on Fe 3 O 4 has been demonstrated as an efficient way to promote the photocatalytic activity of Fe 3 O 4 . Therefore, we synthesized Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 composite by growing ultrathin In 2 S 3 nanosheets on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 using a simple one-pot water bath heating method. Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 exhibited high adsorption and photoreduction capacities for Cr(VI) under wide pH, as well as excellent magnetic separation property. Meanwhile, the adsorption and reduction ability of Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 towards Cr(VI) maintained high level in low-valent anions system, while it significantly declined with existence of high-valent anion (PO 4 3− ). A sharp contrast between the two situations manifested that the Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 has strong anti-interference in low-valent anions system. Furthermore, cyclic experiments revealed the admirable photocatalytic activity and reusability of Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 . According to the results of adsorption and cyclic experiments, a distinctly enhanced proportion of Cr on surface of Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 in the first cycle experiment was observed, which indicated that the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) probably promoted the immobilization of Cr species on Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 . XPS analysis results suggested that the Cr(VI) loaded on Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 mostly reduced to Cr(III) via photocatalytic reduction process with In 2 S 3 , and Fe 3 O 4 partly contributed to its reduction. Finally, the enhanced adsorption and reduction capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @In 2 S 3 for Cr(VI) and its easy recycling feature make it has great application potential in Cr(VI) wastewater treatment.

The development of an efficient and economical method to remove the toxic Cr(VI) from water is a global challenge. This study developed a new composite adsorptive membrane by combining polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a substrate with crosslinked polyethyleneimine (PEI) to efficiently remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. After optimizing the preparation conditions of the material, the Cr(VI) removal by PEI/GMA@PAN was investigated using batch adsorption and longer-term filtration experiments. The composite adsorptive membrane exhibited a high adsorption capacity, reaching a maximum of 89.16 mg/g, along with fast adsorption kinetics that achieved equilibrium within 100 min for Cr(VI) removal. Even in the presence of coexisting ions, PEI/GMA@PAN membrane maintained a high efficiency in removing Cr(VI). The removal mechanism mainly relied on electrostatic interactions and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Notably, long-term filtration experiments substantiated the membrane's effectiveness in removing Cr(VI) from synthetic wastewater, with an impressive treatment volume of 342 L/m 2 . The optimized PEI/GMA@PAN membrane also demonstrated low PEI leaching across a wide pH range and the potential for re-utilization through four-round cycles, underscoring its promising applicability in wastewater treatment. Therefore, the newly synthesized composite membranes show potential for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is of significant interest in the environmental field due to its high toxicity. Biochar is commonly used as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. However, its lower removal efficiency remains a persistent challenge. This study develops an iron-modified rice straw biochar through a simple precipitation and pyrolysis method and applies it for Cr(VI) removal in wastewater, which could convert waste into treasure and improve the adsorption performance of adsorbent. In the adsorption experiments, the results revealed that the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) reached 95.54% within 480 min (conditions: adsorbent dosage 2.67 g/L, pH 2.5, temperature 25 ± 2 °C). The Langmuir isotherm model was more suitable to describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) by Fe-BC, and the fitted adsorption capacity achieved 10.03 mg/g. The experimental process was better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process chemical adsorption was the rate-limiting step. The thermodynamic experiments revealed that the adsorption process of Cr(VI) by Fe-BC was spontaneous and endothermic. Column experiments demonstrated that a lower flow speed was beneficial to adsorption performance. Mechanistic studies highlighted the synergistic roles of electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and reduction in Cr(VI) removal. These findings provide novel perspectives and innovative approaches for the development and application of adsorbents.
