Kinetic and Thermodynamic Study of Ag+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ Ion Adsorption on LTA for High-Performance Antibacterial Coating

Jiayuan Yang,Jixing Cui,Haiping Zhang,Hui Zhang,Jesse Zhu

Antibacterial powder coatings have attracted increasing attention with the awakening of people’s health awareness. Silver antibacterial agent has been widely used in coating system due to its superior stability and durability. However, silver ions have the problems of excessive release rate and the tendency to cause yellowing of the coating film. The addition of Cu2+and Zn2+can effectively alleviate these two phenomena. In this paper, the ternary exchange kinetics of Ag+, Cu2+, and Zn2+were studied to provide a theoretical basis for the synthesis of LTA-Ag-Cu-Zn. The reaction kinetics study shows that the selectivity and the adsorption capacity of LTA to Ag+is higher than that of Cu2+and Zn2+. The thermodynamic analysis discovers that LTA has the highest selectivity for Ag+, and the exchange between the two is spontaneous. In contrast, the selectivity of LTA to Cu2+and Zn2+is concentration-dependent. By establishing the three-ion competitive adsorption curve, it is found that the selectivity of Ag+is the highest, and the selectivity of copper and zinc is similar. These trends result from Ag+ions’ low hydration energy, small hydration radius, and strong electronegativity. This research lays the groundwork for developing high-performance LTA-Ag-Cu-Zn tri-ion exchange antibacterial agents.

Mechanism Insights Into High-Performance Cu2+ Adsorption by ZIF-8/PAN Nanocomposite Fibers: Coordination and Ion Exchange Dynamics

Hailong Zhang,Ruimeng Li,Haishui Xu,Ling Quan,Chengyu Zhan,Peng Han,Kehan Xu,Yuping Tong

The accumulation of copper ions in the environment can devastate the ecological systems and threaten the health of organisms. Consequently, the development of effective adsorbents to extract Cu 2+ from aqueous solutions is urgently needed. Here, the Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanocomposite fibers were synthesized by electrospinning and further characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). ZIF-8 powders were uniformly distributed on the surface of the nanocomposite fibers, and amide CO  NH bonds were formed between the  NH 2 groups of ZIF-8 and the CO groups of PAN. The ZIF-8/PAN nanocomposite fibers demonstrated an exceptional Cu 2+ adsorption capacity of 275.7 mg g −1 at pH = 4.0. The adsorption process adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption mechanism, as conformed by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, involves the coordination of the  NH 2 and CO groups with Cu 2+ and the ion exchange processes between Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ for the nanocomposite fibers. This study provides a novel approach for the removal of Cu 2+ from aqueous solutions and addresses the challenge of recovering powder materials in wastewater treatment.

Development of MOF-derived Co3O4 microspheres composed of fiber stacks for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb2+ and Cu2+

Guo Jieli,Li Jin,Xing Xiujing,Xiong Wei,Li Hao

As an ideal transition metal oxide, Co 3 O 4 is a P-type semiconductor with excellent electrical conductivity, non-toxicity and low cost. This work reports the successful construction of Co 3 O 4 materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using a surfactant micelle template-solvothermal method. The modified electrodes are investigated for their ability to electrochemically detect Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous environments. By adjusting the mass ratios of alkaline modifiers, the morphological microstructures of Co 3 O 4 -X exhibit a transition from distinctive microspheres composed of fiber stacks to rods. The results indicate that Co 3 O 4 -1(NH 4 F/CO(NH 2 ) 2  = 1:0) has a distinctive microsphere structure composed of stacked fibers, unlike the other two materials. Co 3 O 4 -1/GCE is used as the active material of the modified electrode, it shows the largest peak response currents to Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ , and efficiently detects Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in the aqueous environment individually and simultaneously. The linear response range of Co 3 O 4 -1/GCE for the simultaneous detection of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ is 0.5–1.5 μM, with the limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) are 9.77 nM and 14.97 nM, respectively. The material exhibits a favorable electrochemical response, via a distinctive Co 3 O 4 -1 microsphere structure composed of stacked fibers. This structure enhances the number of active adsorption sites on the material, thereby facilitating the adsorption of heavy metal ions (HMIs). The presence of oxygen vacancies (O V ) can also facilitate the adsorption of ions. The Co 3 O 4 -1/GCE electrode also exhibits excellent anti-interference ability, stability, and repeatability. This is of great practical significance for detecting Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in real water samples and provides a new approach for developing high-performance metal oxide electrochemical sensors derived from MOFs. Cu single atoms anchored on hydrangea-like carbon nitride for facilitating photo-Fenton: Role of Cu2+/Cu+ cycle

Zhipeng Guo,Wei Wei,Yihang Li,Xianghong Niu,Fengming Hou,Jin Li,Xiaoke Zhang,Xiuyun Zhang,Ang Wei

Single-atom photo-Fenton (PF) reaction is widely employed for the degradation of antibiotics and water disinfection. However, the key fundamental issues of the valence state cycling of single-atom metals and the activation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in the PF process remain indistinct. Herein, we developed a catalyst donated as Cu single atoms anchored hydrangea-like carbon nitride (Cu-SA/CNH) with Cu−N 4 coordination for PF reaction. Compared to pristine CNH, the Cu-SA/CNH exhibited a 2.42-fold increase in PF kinetics. The Cu-SA/CNH/PF system achieved 98.1% degradation efficiency of tetracycline and effectively inactivated Escherichia coli within 30 min. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the formation of Cu−N 4 effectively improved the energy of the Cu d orbitals, leading to the generation of intermediate states that facilitated the Cu 2+ /Cu + cycle. The adsorption capacity of Cu d xz orbitals on H 2 O 2 increased nearly 10 times. This work provides valuable insights for enhancing single-atom PF activity to address environmental pollution.

A Double Network Composite Hydrogel with Self-Regulating Cu2+/Luteolin Release and Mechanical Modulation for Enhanced Wound Healing

Yue Li,Yunpeng Wang,Yuanyuan Ding,Xi Fan,Liansong Ye,Qingqing Pan,Bowen Zhang,Peng Li,Kui Luo,Bing Hu,Bin He,Yuji Pu

Designing adaptive and smart hydrogel wound dressings to meet specific needs across different stages of wound healing is crucial. Here, we present a composite hydrogel, GSC/PBE@Lut, that offers self-regulating release of cupric ions and luteolin and modulates mechanical properties to promote chronic wound healing. The double network hydrogel, GSC, is fabricated through photo-cross-linking of gelatin methacrylate, followed by Cu2+-alginate coordination cross-linking. On one hand, GSC allows for rapid Cu2+ release to eliminate bacteria in the acidic pH environment during inflammation and reduces the hydrogel’s mechanical strength to minimize tissue trauma during early dressing changes. On the other hand, GSC enables slow Cu2+ release during the proliferation stage, promoting angiogenesis and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the inclusion of pH- and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive luteolin nanoparticles (PBE@Lut) in the hydrogel matrix allows for controlled release of luteolin, offering antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and promoting anti-inflammatory macrophage polarization. In a murine model of Staphylococcus aureus infected wounds, GSC/PBE@Lut demonstrates exceptional therapeutic benefits in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, angiogenic, and tissue regeneration. Overall, our results suggest that smart hydrogels with controlled bioactive agent release and mechanical modulation present a promising solution for treating chronic wounds.

A novel phthalohydrazide derivative as a multi-targeted fluorescent probe for monitoring trace Co2+ and Cu2+ in water

Luyue Wang,Yuzhu Chen,Zhengyang Xing,Jie Ma

Real-time monitoring of metal ion species and concentrations in water is a highly active research field. In the paper, a novel fluorescent molecule, (E)-N'-((5-(9-phenyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl) thiophen-2-yl) methylene) terephthalohydrazide (PCTMT), is synthesized via Suzuki reaction and Schiff-base reaction in turn. In the DMF-H 2 O (70 % v/v) solvent system, the PCTMT presents a good aggregation-induced enhancement (AIE) fluorescent effect and good selectivity and anti-interference for monitoring Co 2+ and Cu 2+ in water with a wide pH range. The probe's detection limit (LOD) reached 28.2 nM and 38.7 nM for Co 2+ and Cu 2+ , respectively. The binding constants between PCTMT and Co 2+ and Cu 2+ are calculated as 1.8 ×10 17 M -2 and 2.3 ×10 16 M -2 , at a 2:1 mol ratio. In the probe system, Co 2+ and Cu 2+ can be distinguished by oxalate titration. The detection mechanism is discussed through testing analyses with the theoretical simulation calculation via the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The probe also indicates good detection capacities in real water samples. This study may promote the development of coordinated-type ion probes and innovation in water quality detection technology.

Biofilm-camouflaged Prussian blue synergistic mitochondrial mass enhancement for Alzheimer's disease based on Cu2+ chelation and photothermal therapy

Lianxin Li,Yu Xiong,Yuewen Zhang,Yujiao Yan,Ruixin Zhao,Fengmei Yang,Meng Xie

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases characterized by cognitive and memory impairment. Metal ion imbalance and Mitochondrial dysfunction, leading to abnormal aggregation of β-amyloid protein (Aβ), are key factors in the pathogenesis of AD. Therefore, we designed a composite nanometer system of red blood cell (RBC) membranes-encapsulated Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB/RBC). Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) can chelate Cu 2+ and reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS). The RBC membranes are a kind of natural long-lasting circulating carrier. At the same time, through NIR irradiation, the excellent photothermal ability of PBNPs can also temporarily open the blood-brain barrier (BBB), enhance the transmission efficiency of PB/RBC across the BBB, and depolymerize the formed Aβ deposits, thereby achieving the optimal therapeutic effect. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that PB/RBC could inhibit Cu 2+ -induced Aβ monomers aggregation, eliminate the deposition of Aβ plaques, improve the quality of mitochondria, restore the phagocytic function of microglia, alleviate neuroinflammation in APP/PS1 mice, and repair memory damage. In conclusion, our biofilm-camouflaged nano-delivery system provides significant neuroprotection by inhibiting Cu 2+ -induced Aβ monomers aggregation, photothermally depolymerizing Aβ fibrils and reducing the level of ROS, thus effectively ameliorating and treating AD.

Application of HMN-Cu2+ gel with anticoagulant function in promoting rapid vascular endothelial repair in blood fluid environment

Yi'an Chen,Mengxue Zhou,Jingyue Wang,Yunji Fei,Xiaoling Yan,Xin Hao,Ansha Zhao

Atherosclerotic plaques can be eliminated using approaches such as endarterectomy. However, intimal damage resulting from surgery is frequently challenging to address. Traditional surgical techniques often incorporate foreign substances such as modified stents or drugs to counter the consequences of intimal defects. Such treatment makes it difficult to repair vascular defects in endothelial segments. It is prone to cause problems such as hyperplasia and abnormal blood supply due to vascular endothelial defects. In this study, hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural extracellular mechanism component that is not prone to actively induce coagulation, was employed as a biomimetic material for intimal repair. Through chemical grafting modification, the gel was endowed with rapid photocuring performance within 3 s, and the scientific attributes of the gel-series materials were enhanced. The additional incorporation of Cu 2+ into the gel-prepared HMN-Cu 2+ hydrogel augmented the anticoagulant effect of the material while enhancing blood cell compatibility. The results of material science experiments indicate that HMN gel can adhere stably to various biological interfaces in a fluid environment mimicking blood flow, and its swelling and degradation properties are appropriate. Cell experiments and blood evaluation demonstrated that the gel exhibited favorable erythrocyte compatibility and anticoagulant and endothelial spreading capabilities during intimal repair. The gel has the potential to substitute the intima barrier, improve the intima repair environment, and facilitate subsequent intima repair. It can effectively resolve the problem of intima layer irreparability during novel low-damage vascular surgeries such as intima stripping and plaque rotation.

Hydrophobic-carbon-dot-based dual-emission micelle for ratiometric fluorescence biosensing and imaging of Cu2+ in liver cells

Linlin Lu,Chongchong Feng,Jie Xu,Fengyang Wang,Haijun Yu,Zhiai Xu,Wen Zhang

Copper is closely related to liver damage, therefore, it is essential to develop a simple and sensitive strategy to detect copper ions (Cu 2+ ) in liver cells. A hydrophobic carbon dots (HCDs)-based dual-emission fluorescent probe for Cu 2+ was prepared by encapsulating HCDs in micelles formed by self-assembly of amphiphilic polymer DSPE-PEG and tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP)-modified DSPE-PEG. The obtained probe showed characteristic fluorescence emissions of HCDs and TCPP with large emission shift of 170   nm with single-wavelength excitation. In the presence of Cu 2+ , the fluorescence of TCPP was quenched and that of HCDs remained unchanged, displaying ratiometric fluorescence response to Cu 2+ . The developed probe exhibited high sensitivity (detection limit down to 36   nM) and selectivity to Cu 2+ over other substances, and the probe was used to image the changes of Cu 2+ level in liver cells successfully.

Rapid detection of Cu2+ and Cr3+ ions in industrial wastewater using gelatin-poly-ε-caprolactone nanofiber fluorescent sensors

Jing Yang,Yun Yuan,Ruxin Zhang,Chao Liu,Deyi Zhu,Dandan Ji

Industrial wastewater, a byproduct of rapid industrialization, often contains hazardous heavy metal ions such as Cu 2+ , Cr 3+ , posing significant risks to environmental and human health. To address the urgent need for fast and simple detection methods in industrial enterprises, we developed gelatin-poly-ε-caprolactone (GEL-PCL) nanofiber fluorescent sensors, incorporating 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone (1,4-DHAQ), for the rapid detection of Cu 2+ , Cr 3+ ions. Electrospinning was used to prepare 1,4-DHAQ@GEL-PCL and 1,4-DHAQ/Cu 2+ @GEL-PCL sensors, leveraging the fluorescence intensity fluctuation behavior between 1,4-DHAQ and the target ions to enable fluorescence-based detection. The sensors were characterized using SEM to confirm nanofiber morphology, and UV–Vis spectroscopy to analyze absorption properties. The sensors demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity for Cu 2+ , Cr 3+ ions, with detection ranges of 4.8–6.5 × 10 −6  M and 2.7–4.3 × 10 −6  M, respectively. Furthermore, they maintained stable performance over 6 months of storage and showed reliable results in actual tannery wastewater samples, comparable to ICP-MS data. This study highlights the potential of these sensors as environmentally friendly, cost-effective tools for monitoring heavy metal ion concentrations, offering significant contributions to sustainable industrial wastewater management, and meeting the pressing needs of enterprises for efficient and straightforward monitoring solutions.

Preparation of PIE-Active Poly(2,4-thiazolidinediones) by Oxidative Polymerization and Simultaneous Specific Detection of Cu2+/Co2+ Ions

Rumeng Gao,Yayu Feng,Yunfei Liu,Lin Wang,Kuilin Deng

In this study, poly( 2, 4 -thiazolidinedione) (PTD) is prepared by oxidative polymerization using 2,4 -thiazolidinedione (TD) as monomer. PTD exhibits significant polymerization-induced emission (PIE) at 540 nm, resulting from the intramolecular aggregation of thiazole heterocycles and the formation of electron-space conjugation. The PIE-active PTD demonstrates simultaneously specific detection of Cu 2 ⁺/Co 2 ⁺ with detection limits as low as 0.47 µ M and 68.9 nM, respectively, even in the presence of 14 common metal ions and 11 anions. Fluorescence quenching experiments reveal that Cu 2 ⁺/Co 2 ⁺ coordinates with PTD to form a 1:2 non-fluorescent complex through a static quenching mode. Most importantly, the efficient differentiation between Cu 2 ⁺ and Co 2 ⁺ is achieved using dynamic color recognition technology based on smartphone APP and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. This approach innovatively combines solution color gradient change with smartphone RGB to establish a semi-quantitative and convenient detection method. The lower detection limits of Cu 2 ⁺/Co 2 ⁺ reached 36.2 and 37.8 nM m with naked eye recognition, which provides a technological solution for the rapid detection of Cu 2 ⁺/Co 2 ⁺ ions without the aid of large-scale instruments. In brief, the successful preparation and detection application of PIE-active PTD open up a straightforward and feasible path for molecular design of fluorescent non-conjugated polymers from non-fluorescent monomers.

Two Zn-based metal-organic frameworks constructed with the mixed ligands for fluorescence detection of Cu2+ and Co2+

Xiaojing Mao,Huachang Li,Yehong Shi,Jiemin Liu,Lijun Kuai,Jijun Liu,Yan Han,Yuexi Huang,Haijiao Xie

Two zinc-based metal-organic frameworks, namely [Zn(L 1 )(Phen)H 2 O] n ( 1 ) and {[Zn(L 2 )(Phen)]⋅(H 2 O)} n ( 2 ), were successfully constructed by mixed ligands strategy (HL 1 =1,4-benzendicarboxylic acid, Phen=1,10-phenanthroline monohydrate, HL 2 =5-hydroxyisophthalic acid), and characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), etc. The X-ray single crystal diffraction demonstrate that both 1 and 2 show 1D chain structure. The orbital energies of 1, 2 and ligands have been investigated using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The fluorescent sensing experimental revealed that both 1 and 2 exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu 2+ and Co 2+ ions over other metal ions, and the detection limit (LOD) of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ for 1 were 0.077 μM and 0.15 μM, and the LOD of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ for 2 were 0.81 μM and 0.48 μM, respectively. In addition, the fluorescence quenching mechanism of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ can be attributed to energy competitive absorption. Furthermore, in the real sample detection, the recoveries of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ were 92.6 - 109.1 % and 96.7 - 110.0 %, respectively. This work provided a reliable method for the quantitative detection of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ and was successfully applied in river water with satisfactory recovery and precision.
