Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is one of the most promising light-absorbing materials for solar energy conversion, attracting extensive attention in photoelectrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (PEC CO 2 RR). However, the inefficient collection of photogenerated charge carriers limits the application of Cu 2 O photocathodes. Herein, adenine biomolecules were introduced into graphene oxide (denoted as A-GO) as a charge transfer layer for coating Cu 2 O photocathode. The A-GO charge transfer layer can improve photoelectrochemical activity and stability of the Cu 2 O photocathode by facilitating the electrons transfer. Under AM 1.5 G illumination, the photocurrent density of the A-GO/Cu 2 O photocathode is 2.74 mA cm −2 at −1.1 V (vs Ag/AgCl), which is 2.23 and 1.56 times higher than that of bare Cu 2 O and GO/Cu 2 O photocathodes, respectively. The Lewis-basic and pyrimidine N sites in adenine biomolecules can assist the Cu 2 O for PEC CO 2 RR. During PEC CO 2 RR, the A-GO/Cu 2 O photocathode shows a high Faradaic efficiency of 69.25% for menthol production. Coating biomolecules functionalized GO as a charge transfer layer was a crucial strategy for building effective and stable Cu 2 O-based photocathodes for PEC CO 2 RR, as illustrated in this study.

In this work, two-dimensional Zn carbon nanosheets (CNs) are obtained after heat treatment of in situ synthesized ZIF-8/NaCl nanocomposites , which are ultrasonically mixed with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Subsequently, the nanocomposites Zn CNs-MWCNTs with large specific surface area and excellent catalytic properties are obtained. Meanwhile, the photoelectric material H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs are drop-coated on Zn CNs-MWCNTs/GCE and the modified electrode Zn CNs-MWCNTs/H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs/GCE is obtained. Eventually, a novel dopamine photoelectrochemical sensor based on Zn CNs-MWCNTs/H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs/GCE is constructed. Among them, the photocurrent intensity of H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs is much higher than that of pure H–Cu 2 O and pure CdTe QDs. This is due to the effective combination of CdTe QDs and H–Cu 2 O to form a p-p heterojunction , which can effectively suppress the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Subsequently, the working mechanism of the photoelectrochemical sensor is investigated in depth by the Kubelka-Munk model. At the same time, the photoelectrochemical sensor has reliable selectivity, stability, reproducibility and limit of detection (LOD = 0.3 nM), and also provides a new idea for the detection of dopamine.

Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) composite was fabricated via an in-situ Cu-bridging strategy to enhance interfacial synergistic effect of photo-Fenton catalysis for thiacloprid (TCL) degradation. Characterization results showed that: (1) Cu 2 O was proved to grow on the surface of MIL(Fe/Cu) in Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) composite and display a high BET surface area of 1553 m 2 /g; (2) Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) reduced band gap from 2.5 to 1.3 eV and extended absorption from UV to visible region; (3) Cu-bridge was proved to promote the intimate interface between Cu 2 O and MIL(Fe/Cu), which accelerated charge transferred and shortened the binding gap and the reaction pathway from photo-induced electrons to Fenton-generated radicals. As a result, this boosted the redox reaction of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and promoted the reversible degree of this catalytic redox ability of MIL(Fe). Catalytic performance exhibited that (1) Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) showed a fast kinetics (2–40 times faster than the state-of-the-art catalysts) and ultra-high mineralization (82.3% within 80 min) for TCL degradation; (2) Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) showed a promising cycling stability due to improved charge transfer ability that could protect Cu 2 O from photo-corrosion during photo-Fenton reaction; (3) The catalytic performance of Cu 2 O/MIL(Fe/Cu) was characterized and seven photocatalytic intermediates were identified by both HPLC/MS and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy. The cyanoimino group in TCL was proved for the first time to be attacked primarily. Moreover, among all the detected intermediates, thiazolidin-2-amine (P6) was found to be the most stable intermediate to be degraded, and it can directly influence the TOC determination during photodegradation process.

Study of the degradation mechanism of the Cu2O/g-C3N4 p–n heterojunction is very challenging and important for the preparation and practical applications of the g-C3N4 photocatalyst in controlling water pollution. Therefore, the Cu2O/g-C3N4 p–n heterojunction was designed and prepared successfully and the mechanism of enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity was proposed. The morphology and structure of the synthesized materials were characterized by using SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XPS. And the optical and electrical properties of the materials were studied by measuring DRS, the photocurrent density and the Mott–Schottky curve. The results showed that the g-C3N4 photocatalyst is coated on the surface of Cu2O to form a tight heterojunction, which facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers, and the quantum yield of the Cu2O/g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst was 3–7 times higher than that of the single component. It has been shown that the built-in electric field formed at the heterojunction interface can effectively separate photogenerated electrons and holes. The photocatalytic performance of the material was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light. The maximum degradation rate of Cu2O/g-C3N4 for TC could reach over 90% in 90 min, and the degradation rate of the single component is more than doubled. Simultaneously, the TOC tests monitored the mineralization of TC up to 83.4%, and the active substances in the reaction process were determined to be ˙O2− and h+ through free radical trap experiments and ESR tests. This work shows that the construction of an internal electric field has greatly improved the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4. The Cu2O/g-C3N4 p–n heterojunction has good degradation ability toward tetracycline and is a good tetracycline-type wastewater treatment material.

Adipic acid is widely used in fine chemical synthesis, biomedicine and other industrial fields, and is a key monomer for the synthesis of nylon-6,6 and nylon-6. Industrially, it is produced by the efficient catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane. However, the activation of the inert C―H bonds in cyclohexane remains a major challenge in the highly selective synthesis of acid products. Using a composite catalyst of copper on a carbon support produced from wood chip biomass, a green catalytic system was established for the one-pot oxidative synthesis of adipic acid from cyclohexane. Wood chips has two functions during pyrolysis: it acts as a carbon support precursor and an in-situ reducing agent, which reduces Cu 2+ into Cu/Cu 2 O active species to obtain Cu/Cu 2 O@C composite catalysts. The abundant defects in biomass carbon form strong coordination interactions with the copper active components, which effectively regulate the electronic distribution of active sites and improve the catalytic performance. Under optimized conditions (100 °C, 12 h), the Cu/Cu 2 O@C-0.1 catalyst achieves a cyclohexane conversion of 19.36% and an adipic acid selectivity of 73.28%. Mechanistic investigations show that the electronic interaction between the biomass carbon support and the copper species strengthens the adsorption of cyclohexanone, which is critical for promoting the selective formation of adipic acid. This study provides a viable strategy for developing eco-friendly, low-cost and high-efficiency advanced catalytic materials. Constructed heterojunction has been considered an efficient strategy to enhance the migration and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers. Herein, a Z-scheme Cu 2 O/BiOBr heterojunction with 0D/2D structure was fabricated by microwave hydrothermal method. It was found that the optimal composites photocatalyst showed excellent activity for sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) illumination, and the removal rate reached 90.7%, which was higher than pristine Cu 2 O (53.0%) and BiOBr (60.0%). Subsequently, the operational parameters such as catalyst dosage, concentrations of pollutants, and pH of solution were investigated. According to the ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRs), Mott-Schottky curve, and density functional theory (DFT) analysis, the Z-scheme degradation mechanism of Cu 2 O/BiOBr heterostructure was proposed. Among them, the interface structure of 0-dimensions/2-dimensions (0D/2D) can significantly increase the number of heterojunctions in the composite catalyst, and Z-scheme heterostructures can accelerate the generation and migration of photoinduced charge carriers, which has a facilitation effect on improving the decomposition activity of the photocatalyst. Moreover, three possible pathways for SMZ degradation were inferred. This study provides a promising strategy for constructing novel heterojunctions with high photocatalytic performance.

This work reported a novel BiVO 4 /SiC/Cu 2 O photocatalyst (BSC), and investigated the microstructure, elemental composition and photoelectrochemical properties of the ternary composite photocatalyst. Compared with pure BiVO 4 , BSC exhibited enhanced levofloxacin hydrochloride (LEF) degradation. The degradation rate of LEF can reach 85.83% within 100 min under the conditions of 25 mg BSC addition, LEF concentration of 10 mg/L and pH of 6.3. Furthermore, a monolithic photocatalyst (BSC@C-wood) was developed by coating BSC on one side of carbonized wood (C-wood), enabling water evaporation and purification. We collected clean water vapor and found that the SiC on C-wood can significantly enhance water purification efficiency due to its excellent photothermal ability. BSC@C-wood provides an alternative approach for the low-cost and high-efficiency treatment of wastewater.

A newly developed adsorbent nano Cu 2 O/Cu-modified activated carbon composite (nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C) was used to remove radioactive iodide ions (I − ) from simulated wastewater. The emphasis of this research is to improve adsorption performance and obtain higher I − removal efficiency compared with the single-stage adsorption. To fully develop the amount of adsorption by nano Cu 2 O/Cu-C, and to increase the decontamination factor (DF) of I − , an improved countercurrent two-stage adsorption (ICTA) process was introduced. In the ICTA process, measures dealing with desorption of loaded adsorbent in the stage-two adsorption were taken and more extensive application of countercurrent two-stage adsorption (CTA) process could be made after the improvement to ICTA process in this study. Furthermore, in order to analyze the process and determine the I − concentration in the effluent, a calculation method was devised based on the Langmuir isotherm equations and adsorption accumulation principle. The mean DFs were 177, 166, and 89.7, respectively, when the initial I − concentrations were 5.00, 10.0, and 20.0 mg/L; and the adsorbent dosage was 1.25 g/L. These results were approximately 8.76, 8.97, and 6.79 times higher, respectively, than with conventional single-stage adsorption. The experimental values of the I − concentration were higher than the calculated ones, which could be ascribed to desorption of the residual loaded adsorbent and formation of CuI in the adsorption at stage 1. Formation of CuI in the adsorption at stage 1 was considered to be the predominant reason.

Wastewater systems contain a large number of compounds, such as anthropogenic aromatic pollutants and natural organic matter (NOM), and usually have pH higher than 4. Fenton-like reaction is the most widespread method for removal of organic pollutants, but their reactivity with H 2 O 2 may be inhibited by NOM due to the competition of hydroxyl radicals and chelating agents. In this work, Cu 2 O@β-cyclodextrin was developed to achieve the collaboration between molecular recognition and Fenton-like catalysis to destruct aromatic pollutants at neutral pH. In Cu 2 O@β-CD, covalent Cu O C bond was topotaxially converted from CuCl assisted by β-CD at room temperature. Covalently linked β-CD could keep humic acid from interfering catalytic performance of Cu 2 O surfaces and inhibit the leaching of copper. A higher catalytic ability was observed for Cu 2 O@β-CD with rate constant 0.0331 min −1 than Cu 2 O (0.0064 min −1 ) at neutral pH. A mechanism of synergistic catalysis was proposed on the basis of Cu + , β-CD and phenoxo-Cu 2+ complexes in the Cu 2 O@β-CD/BPA/H 2 O 2 system. The strategy of coupling molecular recognition into Fenton-like reaction provides an efficient and promising approach to the destruction of aromatic pollutants at neutral pH.

A facile cuprous oxide nanoparticles functionalized electro-reduced graphene oxide modified glassy carbon electrode (denoted as Cu2O NPs-ERGO/GCE) was fabricated via a simple physical adsorption and electrochemical reduction approach. Cyclic voltammetry and second-order derivative linear scan voltammetry were used to investigate the electrocatalysis oxidation of vanillin on the Cu2O NPs-ERGO/GCE. The compound yielded a well-defined voltammetric response in 0.1 M H2SO4at 0.916 V (vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)). A linear calibration graph was obtained in the concentration range of 0.1 μM to 10 μM and 10 μM to 100 μM, while the detection limit (S/N = 3) is 10 nM. In addition, the Cu2O NPs-ERGO/GCE presented well anti-interference ability, stability, and reproducibility. It was used to detect vanillin sensitively and rapidly in different commercial food products, and the results were in agreement with the values obtained by high performance liquid chromatography. Keywords:cuprous oxide nanoparticles;electroreduced graphene oxide;vanillin;food analysis

Two kinds of Cu2O–ZnO nano-heteroarchitectures were fabricated through a hydrothermal method. By utilizing polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a binding agent, ZnO nanoparticles were uniformly self-assembled onto Cu2O micro structures. Photoluminescence (PL), field emission and photocatalytic activities of the composite samples were investigated and compared with those of the pure Cu2O samples. The results reveal that ZnO nanoparticles combined on Cu2O microstructures remarkably changed the PL signals, and significantly enhanced the field emission and photocatalytic activities. The novel PL properties, enhanced field emission and photocatalysis activities are attributed to the electron transition and the inhibition of photo-induced electron–hole pairs recombination, which stem from interfacial defect states and energy band differentials at the interface of Cu2O and ZnO. The surface nano-protrusions, large surface area and better dye adsorption induced by ZnO nanoparticles are responsible for the field emission and photocatalysis improvements as well.

Copper-based catalysts demonstrate distinctive multicarbon product activity in the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR); however, their low selectivity presents significant challenges for practical applications. Herein, we have developed a multilevel porous spherical Cu2O structure, wherein the mesopores are enriched with catalytic active sites and effectively stabilize Cu+, while the macropores facilitate the formation of a “gas–liquid–solid” three-phase interface, thereby creating a microenvironment with an increasing water concentration gradient from the interior to the exterior. Potential-driven phase engineering and protonation synergistically optimize the reaction pathway, facilitating a switch between CO and C2H4. At a low current density of 100 mA cm–2, the faradaic efficiency (FE) for CO reaches an impressive 96.97%. When the current density increases to 1000 mA cm–2, FEC2H4 attains 53.05%. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that at lower potentials, the pure Cu2O phase diminishes the adsorption of *CO intermediates, while weak protonation inhibits hydrogen evolution reactions, thereby promoting CO production. Conversely, at more negative potentials, the Cu0/Cu+ interface and strong protonation generate locally elevated concentrations of *CO and *COOH intermediates, which enhance C–C coupling and deep hydrogenation, ultimately improving selectivity toward C2+ products. This study provides novel insights into the rational design of copper-based catalysts for customizable CO2 electroreduction products.
