Room-temperature gas sensors are crucial for detecting toxic gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Conventional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based sensors, however, often require high-temperature operation and suffer from low sensitivity. Here, we present a one-step mini-mechanochemical synthesis of CuO/M(OH) 2 (M = Mg, Ca) heterostructures that exhibit exceptional room-temperature sensing performance towards triethylamine (Et 3 N). Our results reveal a tenfold enhancement in the sensor response to Et 3 N compared to pristine CuO. This remarkable improvement is attributed to the in-situ formation of oxygen vacancies in CuO induced by the incorporation of M(OH) 2 , as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Notably, CuO/Mg(OH) 2 demonstrates superior long-term stability, while CuO/Ca(OH) 2 suffers from performance decay due to environmental carbonation. Furthermore, we developed a portable Et₃N analysis device based on the CuO/Mg(OH) 2 sensor, which enables real-time monitoring with Wi-Fi capability and achieves an accuracy within 6 % error across a 1 to 100 ppm detection range. This study not only provides a cost-effective and scalable fabrication method for CuO-based gas sensors but also highlights the potential of CuO/M(OH)₂ in practical applications for environmental monitoring and food safety assessment.

A novel signal amplification strategy was developed by combining near-infrared light with MoS 2 /CuO/Au nanocomposite for building a colorimetric immunoassay. First, MoS 2 /CuO/Au nanocomposite was synthesized by precipitation and photoreduction methods and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). MoS 2 /CuO/Au nanocomposite has oxidase-like activity and can oxidize TMB to form a blue product (TMBox). Further, the catalytic oxidation of TMB was accelerated under near-infrared (NIR) laser radiation. The sandwich-type colorimetric immunoassay was constructed using MoS 2 /CuO/Au nanocomposite. Under the enhancement of near-infrared light, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was sensitively detected in the range 0.1 to 40 ng/mL with the limit of detection of 0.03 ng/mL. Moreover, the immunosensor has excellent selectivity and anti-interference, good repeatability, and stability. Graphical Abstract

Cellulose acetate (CA), an essential biocompatible polymer for medical dressings, requires integration with antimicrobial agents (e.g., antibiotics, silver nanoparticles) due to its inherent non-antimicrobial nature. While silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) offer broad-spectrum activity, their cytotoxicity caused by uncontrolled ion release remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report a green synthesis strategy using dopamine hydrochloride as both a reducing agent and interfacial modifier to in situ synthesize AgNPs on copper oxide (CuO) surfaces, achieving precise silver ion regulation through CuO-dopamine coordination. The optimized AgNPs@CuO composites were embedded into CA nanofibers via electrospinning, followed by the construction of a polycaprolactone (PCL) supporting layer to form a bilayer membrane. Remarkably, the PCL/CA/AgNPs@CuO membrane exhibited a significant increase in tensile strength compared to monolayer CA, while maintaining adequate porosity for optimal breathability. The CA/AgNPs@CuO nanofiber membrane achieved inhibition zone diameters of 3.9 mm and 4.7 mm against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively, and demonstrated continuous antimicrobial release over 36 h, ensuring long-term antibacterial efficacy. This hierarchically designed system provides a paradigm for developing robust antimicrobial dressings with balanced biocompatibility and durability.

Cu-based catalysts leveraging Cu+/Cu0 active sites have emerged as pivotal for synthesizing essential hydrocarbons and alcohols in electrochemical CO2 reduction, such as ethylene and ethanol (C2 products). However, the dynamic reduction of Cu+ to Cu0 during electroreduction leads to site instability, resulting in diminished efficiency for CO2 conversion to C2 products. Herein, we introduced Si into CuO by the selective dissolution method, engendering Cu–O–Si units to stabilize the Cu+/Cu0 sites. The catalyst manifested good activity in CO2 electroreduction with an elevated Faradaic efficiency for C2 products reaching 81.9% at −100 mA/cm2. After ten cycles of electrochemical testing, the Cu+/Cu0 sites and performance exhibited no signs of degradation. The Si incorporation significantly improved the hybridization of O 2p and Cu 3d orbitals, thereby reinforcing the Cu–O bonds and stabilizing the Cu+/Cu0 sites, which was critical in promoting C–C coupling via decreasing the energy barriers for *OCCO formation and enhancing C2 product selection. The active Cu+ cations with unsaturated coordination contributed to the reaction stabilization, thereby improving the preservation of Cu2O metastable state.

Epoxidation of long-chain α-olefins (LAOs) is a process of paramount importance, particularly in the preparation of epoxides. Traditional epoxidation methods, such as the chlorohydrin method and peracid method, suffer from issues such as poor selectivity, by-product formation, and environmental pollution. Mukaiyama epoxidation, with its mild reaction conditions and exceptional selectivity, has attracted widespread attention and considerable research. Transition metal oxide catalysts show potential in the reaction; however, the catalytic efficiency still require substantial improvement due to dilemma of substance activation. In this study, a synergistic enhancement method was employed, achieved through the creation of oxygen vacancies and the electron-rich nature of Cu. The substitution of Cu with Sn in CuO facilitates the creation of oxygen vacancy (Vo), thereby enhancing absorption and activation of O2. The conversion for O2activation paves the way for the formation of benzoyl peroxy radicals. Moreover, the interaction between Sn and Cu promotes charge transfer from Sn to Cu, resulting in an electron-rich Cu surface that significantly accelerates the dehydrogenation of benzaldehyde. The synergistic enhancement protocol exhibits near-quantitative performance, delivering an oxide yield of 92.9%. This study introduces an innovative dual-promotion catalytic strategy for Mukaiyama epoxidation utilizing readily available O2, providing profound insights into the optimization design of transition metal oxide catalysts and beyond.

The Cu-based catalyst used for electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is a capable approach to reducing greenhouse carbon emissions and producing high value-added multi-carbon (C2 + ) products. Unfortunately, the selectivity of the (C2 + ) products is still quite low. Therefore, it is imperative to develop persuasive electrocatalysts to facilitate the conversion of carbon dioxide into valuable chemical products. Here, we design a CuO Nanosheets catalyst with the phase composition of silver (Ag) and Ag metal–organic framework (Ag-MOF) by using the hydrothermal approach. A maximum ethylene faradaic efficiency (FE) of Ag-MOF/CuO NS is achieved as 45.72 % at −1.1 V (vs RHE), while those CuO NS and Ag/CuO NS show 31 % and 14.24 % respectively. Interestingly, the restructured porous nature of Ag-MOF doped CuO NS electrocatalyst is equipped with a high surface area with strong adsorption capacity of CO 2 and increases the oxygen vacancies abundance with high active sites for selective electrocatalysis activity based on as produced Ag-MOF on CuO surface. This indicates that, in heterostructured catalysts, the coordination between CuO and free carboxyl groups considerably can enhance the dimerization of *CO intermediates and provide a strong coordination environment to the Cu valence state with MOF for the selective electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Thereby, the reaction pathway is shifted from two electrons to a multi-electron by constructing the oxygen vacancies for the production of multi-carbon products.

To address the issue of limited degradation efficiency due to rapid carrier recombination in piezoelectric catalysis, this study designed a ternary heterojunction structure of ZnO/CuO@UiO-66-NH 2 . A ZnO/CuO heterointerface was constructed on the surface of UiO-66-NH 2 via a hydrothermal method, forming a composite piezoelectric catalytic system with abundant active sites and enhanced built-in electric fields. Theoretical analysis indicated that UiO-66-NH 2 , as a carrier, not only significantly increased the specific surface area of the material but also cooperatively regulated the charge distribution in the heterojunction region. Under ultrasonic vibration, the piezoelectric potential generated by the ZnO/CuO heterojunction effectively drove carrier separation, thereby significantly enhancing the redox reaction efficiency. Under dark conditions, the 30-minute degradation rate of RhB by this material reached 99.7%, with a rate constant of 0.09435 min⁻¹, far superior to the pure ZnO/CuO system. Additionally, ZnO/CuO@UiO-66-NH 2 demonstrated excellent catalytic performance and cycling stability in the degradation of methyl orange and methylene blue. Band structure and radical trapping experiments confirmed that hydrogen radicals (·H) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 ⁻) were the main active species in the degradation process. This research provides new material ideas for the development of efficient and stable heterojunction piezoelectric catalysts and offers potential pathways for the construction of integrated systems for dye wastewater treatment and energy conversion. Modulation of the electronic microenvironment of copper (Cu) sites during electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECR) is essential for controlling the strength of intermediate adsorption and improving electron transfer. However, precisely regulating the electronic microenvironment around Cu through adjustment of the Cu–O bond length remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a strategy that achieves fine-tuned control over the electronic microenvironment around the active center through lattice compression. Experimental results show that the introduction of Cd alters the Cu–O bond length and the electronic microenvironment around Cu and significantly enhances the adsorption of *CO and *COOH intermediates. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the optimal degree of lattice compression modulates the binding energy of *COOH intermediates, and enhances the d-band center, improving CO2 adsorption. Furthermore, we verified that the structure–activity relationship between bond length change and catalytic activity is consistent with a volcanic-type trend. Remarkably, the O–CuCd-4 catalysts exhibited impressive CO2-to-C2H4 conversion performance (FEC2H4 ≈ 60% and EEC2H4 ≈ 30%) with good stability that matches or exceeds that of most reported Cu-based oxides. This study provides a rational pathway for designing catalysts with precisely modifiable electronic microenvironments, resulting in enhanced CO2 conversion activity and long-term stability.

Energetic interfacial films represent a promising encapsulation material for micro- thruster arrays in near-Earth orbit, where their combustion performance under low- pressure or vacuum conditions is critical for practical application. Herein, a uniformly dispersed layered energetic composite film suitable for scalable array encapsulation has been designed via electrospinning technology. The ternary composite energetic film consists of interwoven polyvinylidene fluoride/aluminum/copper oxide (PVDF/Al/CuO) nanofibers. Morphological analysis confirms the effective loading of nanoparticles (Al and CuO) onto the fibers. Energetic films fabricated by this method significantly suppress particle agglomeration. Thermal analysis reveals atmosphere-dependent exothermic pathways. Constant-volume combustion experiments demonstrate that energy release is modulated by film thickness. The evolution of the film ablation flow field has been investigated. Crucially, transient resistance thermometry has for the first time reported the phenomenon of increasing ignition temperature of energetic materials with decreasing pressure under low-pressure conditions. At 1 kPa, the ignition temperature is significantly elevated compared to that at atmospheric pressure. Propagation velocity characterization uncovered a counterintuitive phenomenon: below 10 kPa, 610 μm-thick films exhibit a 42% lower propagation velocity than 270 μm-thick films, a phenomenon termed the thickness-compensation failure effect. An asymmetric heat transfer-dissipation theory is proposed to explain this inversion through geometric thermal management. This work provides crucial experimental evidence and a theoretical foundation for guiding the design of energetic films for vacuum-operating micro-thruster array encapsulation.

In this study, bimetallic particles (CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 ) were prepared by displacement plating and calcination to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). First, the key preparation parameters (i.e., theoretical Cu mass loading (TML Cu ) and calcination temperature) of CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 preparation were investigated by single-factor experiments. Then the properties of CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 were analyzed by scanning electron microscope energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), energy dispersive spectrometry mapping (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Subsequently, effects of PMS dosage, CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 dosage and initial pH on the degradation of sulfamethoxazole were studied respectively. Meanwhile, the results of control experiments indicated that the initial SMX degradation efficiency of CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 system was slower, but the final degradation rate was higher than that of Fe 0 /PMS system, which was due to the sustained release effect of Fe 2+ . In addition, the quantitative experiment of SO 4 − indicated that SO 4 − generated continuously in CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 /PMS system. Furthermore, the detection results of quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed the generation of multiple reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO 4 − , HO , O 2 − , 1 O 2 ) in CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 /PMS system, which degraded SMX synergistically. Finally, the SMX degradation pathways were proposed based on the intermediates detected by Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole time of flight – Mass Spectrum (LC-QTOF-MS/MS) and the activation mechanism of CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 /PMS system was analyzed in detail. This study provided a new insight on the application of CuO@FeO x @Fe 0 on organic pollutant degradation.
