Constructing highly efficient and durable non-noble metal modified carbon catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the whole pH range is essential for energy conversion devices but still remains a challenge. Herein, the Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles and Fe-N X species anchored on the interconnected mesoporous carbon materials are fabricated through an economical and facile template-assisted polymerization-pyrolysis strategy. The catalyst exhibits unique features with the electronic interaction between Fe/Fe 3 C and Fe−N X , large specific surface area and high mesoporous structure as well as nitrogen doping in porous carbon skeletons, which can effectively catalyze ORR over the full pH range. In an alkaline electrolyte , the optimized catalyst displays favorable ORR performance with positive onset potential ( E onset = 0.91 V), half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.83 V), long-term cycles stability and methanol tolerance, exceeding those for the commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the prepared catalyst could be directly assembled into the alkaline Zn−air battery that exhibits the open-circuit voltage of 1.44 V, high power density of 96.0 mW cm −2 and long-term durability. Therefore, the template-assisted polymerization-pyrolysis strategy provides a promising route for designing high-performance non-noble metal decorated ORR electrocatalysts .

Pd@MIL-100(Fe) composite nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), powder X-ray diffraction analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and element mapping. Due to the local restriction or confinement effect of the unique pore/surface structure within the MIL-100(Fe) nanospheres , small Pd nanoparticle (4–6 nm) were obtained with high stability without using any surfactant as stabilizer . The as-synthesized Pd@MIL-100(Fe) composite nanoparticles were then employed for the catalytic reduction of 2/3/4-nitrophenol, which exhibiting high catalytic activity and recyclability attributed to the synergistic effect between Pd nanoparticles and MIL-100(Fe) nanospheres.

Sustainable electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems are expected to alleviate the energy shortages and environmental crisis that are currently facing the world. To bring the large-scale deployment of these energy systems to reality, the development of highly efficient, sustainable, and stable electrocatalysts is key. In this work, an electrocatalyst composed of homonuclear paired Fe sites coordinated onto N-doped carbon, labelled as Fe2–N–C-900, is reported. The material is synthesized by preparing, and then pyrolyzing at 900 °C, Fe(III)-tetrapyridinylporphyrin-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The electrocatalyst displays excellent activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with an onset potential of 0.990 V vs. RHE, a positive half-wave potential of 0.869 V vs. RHE, and a limiting current density of 6.7 mA cm−2, which are all superior to those of the benchmark noble metal-based ORR catalyst Pt/C. This is attributed to its high-density of catalytically active Fe2–N6 sites, large electrochemically active surface area, and small charge transfer resistance. The electrocatalyst also functions well for the ORR on an air electrode in an aqueous zinc–air battery while showing high catalytic activity, remaining stable, and giving a peak power density of 166.3 mW cm−2. Its performance here, too, exceeds that of a Pt/C-based zinc–air battery.

Dual-metal single-atom catalysts with heteronuclear active sites exhibit superior oxygen catalysis performance than their single-atom counterparts, facilitating the practical applications in advanced electrochemical energy devices. Herein, a Fe-Cu dual-metal single-atom catalyst with Fe-N 6 and Cu-N 1 S 2 coordination environment (FeCu-DSAs/NSC) is reported. Due to the synergism of bimetallic active sites and asymmetric heteroatom coordination, the resultant FeCu-DSAs/NSC displays better bifunctional catalytic performance (a small potential gap between the E η10 and E 1/2 , ΔE=0.647 V) when compared with the counterparts (Pt/C+IrO 2 and Cu-ISAs/NSC), as well as surpassing most of bifunctional metal atom-based catalysts reported to date. As expected, FeCu-DSAs/NSC based rechargeable zinc-air battery shows remarkable superiority than commercial Pt/C+IrO 2 benchmark, resulting in a high peak power density (230.66 mW cm −2 ), open-circuit voltage (1.464 V) and long-term cycling stability (up to 350 h at 10 mA cm −2 ).

Coupling dithionite (DNT) with FeVO 4 induced PMS activation (FeVO 4 /PMS/DNT) effectuates fast heterogeneous Fe(III) reduction to generate multitudinous reactive oxygen species (ROS) for fast degradation of carbamazepine (2.5 mg/L, >90 % degradation efficiency within 300 s) in batch mode. The Fe(III)/Fe(II) circulation propelled by DNT and reduced V species experiences two stages. DNT induces SO 2 − generation, which is a highly active species with strong reducibility for Fe and V reduction. The reduced V species donate electrons to ≡Fe(III) via Fe-O-V bond rather than directly react with PMS, implying introducing polyvalent V to modulate Fe-based materials intensifies DNT utilization and alleviates ROS quenching effects. Moreover, FeVO 4 crystalline form regains after reaction, and FeVO 4 /PMS/DNT system has an excellent reutilization and strong resistance to natural waters. Our discovery sheds new light on acceleration of heterogenous Fe(III)/Fe(II) circulation to promote Fenton-like oxidation , it may be a long-lasting strategy for water remediation.

In this work, the co-precipitation method was used to prepare Fe-doped BiOCl-modified materials for visible photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin in water by taking advantage of the property that the acidic nature of FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O dissolved in water can improve the surface structure of the materials. In order to improve the problems of BiOCl’s poor absorption of visible light and high compounding rate of electron-hole pairs, the transition atom Fe is introduced to add impurity energy levels in BiOCl, which effectively reduces the bandgap width of the material and promotes the photogenerated electron migration of the material, and it is calculated that after modification, the band gap of the material can be reduced to 2.79 eV, which is a decrease of 0.32 eV compared to the original BiOCl (3.11 eV). Fe acts as an electron trap to capture electrons in electron-hole pairs and slows down their complexation with holes, effectively enhancing the stability of carrier separation in the material. Through free radical quenching experiments and ESR assays, it is understood that superoxide radicals are one of the free radicals needed in that act in the reaction process, indicating that the efficient electron capture enables the electrons to better react with adsorbed oxygen to generate superoxide radicals, which enhances the oxidizing ability of the system. Meanwhile, the degradation ability of modified materials on ofloxacin has been studied. Compared to the original BiOCl, under the condition of adding 50 mg/100 mL, the degradation ability of modified materials on ofloxacin has significantly improved. After 100 min of light exposure, the degradation efficiency of OFL·(10 mg/L) increased from 26.10% to 88.02%.

Radioactive cesium (Cs) is a significant concern due to its role as a major byproduct of nuclear fission and its potential for radioactive contamination. Internal contamination with radioactive Cs is characterized by immoderate production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in severe radiation damage. Therefore, the development of therapeutic strategies should focus on enhancing the excretion of radioactive Cs and reducing radiation-induced oxidative damage. However, current therapeutic drugs like Prussian blue (PB) have limited efficacy in addressing these issues. In this study, we present Cu3[Fe(CN)6]2 (CuFe) nanoparticles, a Prussian blue analog (PBA), which can not only efficiently sequester Cs but also exhibit resistance against radiation damage. The results of the adsorption studies demonstrate that CuFe outperforms PB in terms of adsorption performance. Further mechanistic investigations indicate that the increased adsorption capacity of CuFe may be attributed to the presence of additional defects resulting from the [Fe(CN)6] missing linkers. Moreover, CuFe mimics the functions of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) by effectively eliminating O2˙− and H2O2 while scavenging ˙OH, thereby mitigating ROS induced by radiative Cs. Importantly, in vivo study confirms the efficient Cs decorporation capability of CuFe. The fecal cumulative excretion rate of CuFe reaches 69.5%, which is 1.45 times higher than that of PB (48.8%). These findings demonstrate that CuFe exhibits excellent Cs removal performance and ROS scavenging ability, making it an attractive candidate for the treatment of Cs contamination.

“Turn-off” fluorescent sensors for Cr(VI) have been fabricated based on organic polymer-capped gold nanoparticles. The fluorescence intensity, as well as the response behavior of the sensors, is dependent on the pH values of buffer solution and dilution amounts of the sensors. When diluted 50 times with pH 2.0 buffer solution, the sensors show good linear responses toward Cr(VI) at concentrations between 2.8–5.9 μM and 5.9–29 μM. The calculated detection limit is 0.63 μM (S/N=3). The interference study and real sample assays exhibit satisfying selectivity and reliability results. Furthermore, the quenched intensity of fluorescence could be recovered by Fe(II) ion, which provides a potential method to detect Fe(II) ions. The quenching and recovering mechanisms have also been investigated. It is suggested that the quenching mechanism is based on the combined effects of internal electron transfer and the inner filter effect. Finally, the recovering mechanism is based on the redox reactions between the Cr(VI) and Fe(II) ions.

In proteomics, phosphorylation is an important process for protein post-translational modification (PTM), which greatly improves the diversity of proteomes. The PTM regulates almost all physiological and pathological processes such as signal transduction , cell division, proliferation, differentiation and metabolism. The abnormal expression of protein phosphorylation is also associated with cellular metabolic disorders and a range of diseases. However, in mass spectrometry-based phosphorylated peptideomics studies, phosphorylated peptide signals were inhibited by a high abundance of non-phosphorylated peptides; thus, highly selective enrichment was required. In this study, a newly designed material named Fe 3 O 4 @MIL(Fe/Ti) was synthesized using a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique that coats the surface of magnetic oxide nanospheres with bimetallic MOF of iron and titanium. The synergistic synthetic coating of the bimetallic MOF gives the material a large surface area and excellent hydrophilicity , which endow the nanoparticles with excellent phosphopeptide enrichment ability, high selectivity (β-casein/BSA molar ratio 1:500), a low detection limit (3 fmol), high recovery rate (85%), strong binding capacity, size exclusion ability, and ideal batch-to-batch repeatability. For comparison, we used Fe 3 O 4 @MIL(Fe/Ti) and two single-metal MOF materials Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) and Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-125(Ti), to enrich α-casein in the middle. Thus, the iron-titanium bimetallic MOF can not only enrich all the phosphorylated peptides enriched by Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) and Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-125(Ti), but can also specifically enrich four phosphorylated peptides. Encouraged by the excellent results of characterization and standard protein enrichment, we used this material to analyze human serum and found that bimetallic materials can effectively enrich all four phosphorylated peptides and exclude high molecular proteins. These experimental results indicate that the novel bimetallic MOF is a good candidate to analyze protein phosphorylation in complex samples.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a key role in many efficient and clean energy systems, specifically in fuel cells and metal–air batteries. As a widely used commercial ORR catalyst, Pt/C has the limitations of high price and scarce reserves. Metal–nitrogen–carbon (M–N–C) is considered as one of the most promising alternatives to replace noble metal catalysts. However, how to balance the high catalytic activity and stability is still a major challenge. In this study, we report a novel non-noble metal composited catalyst, Fe–N–C@Ti3C2Tx, synthesized by a facile separated pyrolysis strategy. The Fe-doped Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) was converted to Fe–N–C by carbonization firstly, which was then mixed with few-layered Ti3C2Tx and pyrolyzed together to obtain Fe–N–C@Ti3C2Tx composites. This separated pyrolysis strategy can not only ensure the high carbonization temperature required by Fe–N–C for high catalytic activity but also avoid the damage of MXene caused by high pyrolysis temperature. Thus, Fe–N–C@Ti3C2Tx exhibited excellent ORR activity and stability in alkaline solution, including a half-wave potential of 0.887 V vs. RHE, limiting diffusion current density of 6.3 mA cm−2, and even no attenuation after 10 000 cycles in 0.1 M KOH. Meanwhile, it also exhibited surprisingly good performance in acidic solution, with a half-wave potential of 0.777 V vs. RHE, limiting diffusion current density of 5.7 mA cm−2, and only 11 mV attenuation after 10 000 cycles in 0.1 M HClO4. The superior ORR performance of the synthesized Fe–N–C@Ti3C2Tx could be attributed to the strong coupling effect between Fe–N–C and MXene, the reduced intrinsic and charge transfer impedance, and the increased electrochemically active surface area. This work here provides a new strategy for the development of M–N–C based non-noble metal-based catalysts with high activity and stability, and a promising future for applications in fuel cells and metal–air batteries.

Mo 2 FeB 2 -based cermets exhibit promising industrial manufacturing applications due to their excellent mechanical properties, higher oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. In this study, ternary boride solid solution powders of Mo 2 (Fe x , Ni 1– x )B 2 were successfully prepared with a unique technique via employing B 4 C powder as a boron source, Mo, Fe, and Ni powders as metal sources as well as Ca powder as the decarburization agent. The effect of the Fe/Ni ratio on the phase composition, morphological evolution and average grain size of powders was studied. The shift of diffraction peak in the XRD results and the homogeneous distributions of Mo, Fe, Ni, and B by the EDS energy spectrum validated the successful synthesis of ternary boride solid solution powders. The morphology of solid solution powders varied depending on the Fe/Ni ratio. For compositions with Fe/Ni ratios of 10 : 0, 7 : 3, and 5 : 5, the ternary solid solution powders exhibited pronounced spherical grains with average grain sizes of approximately 3, 1, and 1 μm, respectively. Conversely, when the Fe/Ni ratios were 3 : 7 and 0 : 10, the solid solution powders exhibited mixed morphologies of spherical (with diameters of approximately 1 μm) and prismatic grains (with lengths of about 8 μm and diameters of around 3 μm), corresponding respectively to the tetragonal and orthorhombic crystal structures of Mo 2 NiB 2 . Using ultrafine Mo powder as a raw material to boost reaction kinetics resulted in the product's stable phase being orthorhombic Mo 2 NiB 2 . Nonetheless, at a Fe/Ni ratio of 3 : 7, the product still consisted of orthorhombic and tetragonal Mo 2 NiB 2 phases.

Heterogeneous atoms substitution is an efficient method for promoting Li + storage of transition metal oxides. Herein, a series of Fe-substituted MnO solid solutions with different Fe contents are synthesized by a feasible solid-phase method. The synergistic effects between heterogeneous atoms and rich vacancies are synchronously obtained, which hold distinctive electronic structures and substantial active sites. When optimized Mn 0.55 Fe 0.45 O solid solution as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, pre-prepared electrodes exhibit reversible lithium storage of 1286.9 mAh g –1 at 1 A g −1 after 400 cycles and even 628.1 mAh g –1 at 2 A g –1 after 1000 cycles. The LiCoO 2 //Mn 0.55 Fe 0.45 O full cells are assembled, achieving the reversible capacity of 130.2 and 111.3 mAh g –1 after 150 cycles at 0.1 and 0.2 A g –1 , respectively. Density functional theory calculations also authenticate that the electrochemical activity can be markedly boosted by the heterogeneous atoms substituted Mn 1 -x Fe x O solid solution.
