Atomically dispersed Eu(III) sites in natural deep eutectic solvents based fluorescent probe efficient identification of Fe3+ and Cu2+ in wastewater

Hongwei Ren,Xue Wang,Ruiquan Gong,Meiyu Li,Hongyu Zhu,Jinfeng Zhang,Erhong Duan

Heavy metal ions in wastewater have brought serious environmental pollution. To improve the detection efficiency, it is important to find useful fluorescent probes . The emerging green natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) offer attractive option for “green” detection for its good biocompatibility, easy preparation, and high sensitivity. In this study, a multi-functionalized fluorescent probe with atomically dispersed EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O in amino acid-based NADESs ( l -Glutamic acid/Glycerol, l -Glu/Gly) was synthesized by metal-ligand coordination interactions with a mass ratio of 15:1. Combined with the NADESs and rare earth metal , the l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O could form the amino site and Eu 2+ site fluorescent centers. Under the excitation wavelength of 370 nm, it had dual emission peaks at 425 nm and 470 nm with efficient resonance energy transfer . The stable optoelectronic properties of l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O under external factors, such as mass ratio (13,1 to 18:1), temperature (30–50 °C), pH (1 to 14) and storage time ( >42 days), approved l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O an excellent fluorescence probe. In the application of water-quality monitoring, Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ could react with l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O in different reactive patterns. The blue fluorescence was quenched by Fe 3+ and enhanced by Cu 2+ , thus metal ions could be distinguished with high sensitivity. The detective process was determined and the fluorescent mechanism was also proposed. l -Glu/Gly/EuCl 3 ·6H 2 O fluorescent probe was demonstrated to be an efficient fluorescent probe for metal detection avoiding the hydrothermal process, and the cumbersome of ilter, dialysis, freeze drying.

Selective detection of Fe3+ ions based on fluorescence MXene quantum dots via a mechanism integrating electron transfer and inner filter effect

Qiuxia Zhang,Yan Sun,Meiling Liu,Yang Liu

Fluorescence quantum dots (QDs) are promising functional nanomaterials in chemical biology and environmental applications, where an analyte-induced responsive system is beneficial for detecting numerous life-related molecules and pollutants. Here, fluorescent Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots (MQDs) with the size of 1.75 nm were synthesized by a simple method of hydrofluoric acid etching and dimethyl sulfoxide exfoliation to form nanosheets followed by a one-step ultrasound method. The as-synthesized MQDs showed excitation-dependent behaviour along with a fluorescence quantum yield value of 7.7%. In addition, the fluorescence of the MQDs can be significantly suppressed by Fe3+. The mechanism for the fluorescence quenching of the MQDs was systematically investigated, which was attributed to the oxidation–reduction reaction between the MQDs and Fe3+ and the inner filter effect (IFE), different from the reported Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET) mechanism for MXene nanosheets. Based on this trait, a fluorescence method for Fe3+ detection based on MQDs was demonstrated with high sensitivity and selectivity, and the limit of detection was 310 nM. The proposed method was successfully used for the sensitive detection of Fe3+ in serum and sea water. This work will not only help to understand the selectivity mechanisms of MQDs as fluorescent probes for metal ions, but also provide a smart sensing platform in biological and environmental detection.

B-GQDs@GSH as a Highly Selective and Sensitive Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of Fe3+ in Water Samples and Intracellular

Yang Xiaohua,Zhang Peigang,Tan Jie,Li Xuebing,Zhang Weidong,Bian Wei,Choi Martin M. F.

Owing to the excellent stability, biocompatibility and photoluminescence property, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are emerging as a kind of potential materials to be applied in a series of fields ranging from sensor to drug delivery. As the growing concern for human and environmental safety, selective detection of metal ions has been paid more and more attention. GQDs, as nanoparticles with superior optical properties, have been attracting growing attention in the field of metal ions detection. In this work, glutathione(GSH) functionalized boron doped graphene quantum dots (B-GQDs@GSH) were successfully synthesized with stable bright blue fluorescence and has been used for the detection of Fe 3+ . A good linear relationship between 1/( F 0 ‒ F ) and 1/ c with the concentration ranging from 0.70 to 53 μmol/L was obtained with a detection limit of 5.5 nmol/L. The application of B-GQDs@GSH for Fe 3+ detection in water samples was demonstrated and the quenching mechanism was further explored. Due to low cytotoxicity and favorable biocompatibility, B-GQDs@GSH were successfully applied for cell fluorescence imaging and intracellular determination of Fe 3+ .

Solar-initiated continuous electron injection to promote Fe3+/Fe2+ catalytic cycle in tourmaline/g-C3N4 composite system for enhanced PMS activation

Zhenyu Shen,Zhexin Zhu,Gangqiang Wang,Zhendong Wang,Wenxing Chen,Wangyang Lu

It is of great significance for improving the electron transmission performance of graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) by an economical method. Herein, urea was mixed with tourmaline (TM) and calcined to obtain g-C 3 N 4 /TM composite photocatalyst . Under solar light, g-C 3 N 4 /TM activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) entirely within 25 min. g-C 3 N 4 /TM had a superior photocatalytic oxidation performance under solar light than g-C 3 N 4 . Photogenerated electron-hole pairs of g-C 3 N 4 were efficaciously suppressed, originating from the more excellent electronic transfer to TM. Four active species, including SO 4 • - , •OH, 1 O 2 , and O 2 • - , were identified for the degradation of CBZ. Ten intermediates of CBZ and six intermediates of sulfaquinoxaline sodium (SQXNa) were determined by using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a high definition mass spectrometer (UPLC-HDMS), and a degradation pathway was proposed. As the reaction progressed, all aromatic nuclear intermediates were mineralized. The degradation of other organic pollutants by the g-C 3 N 4 /TM/PMS system validated the universal adaptability in practical applications. This research provided an effective way to improve the g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic activity in wastewater treatment.

An efficient off–on fluorescence probe based on EDA functionalized Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots for sequential detection of Fe3+ and histamine

Tianyao Wang,Wenming Xiong,Xingguo Tian,Xiaoyan Xu

MXene quantum dots (MQDs) exhibit vast application prospection the field of fluorometric sensing, but how to efficiently utilize MQDs for the selective detection of two components still remains a challenge. Herein, an off–on fluorescence sensor based on ethylenediamine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs (EDA-MQDs) was designed to selectively and sequentially detect Fe 3+ and histamine. EDA-MQDs were synthesized using a facile ultrasonic-hydrothermal method and exhibited bright blue fluorescence with a quantum yield up to 21.12 %. Inner filter effect occurred between Fe 3+ and EDA-MQDs, resulting in fluorescence quenching at 460 nm. Meanwhile, on account of the strong chelation between imidazole group on histamine and Fe 3+ , the Fe 3+ concentration in the system was reduced, so the fluorescence of EDA-MQDs was recovered. Thus, the as-designed fluorescence probe was used for dual-detection of Fe 3+ and histamine in real samples with satisfactory sensitivity and selectivity. The proposed sensing method was verified to possess good linear response in the range of 1–100 μM and 1–60 μM with detection limits of 0.11 μM and 46 nM for Fe 3+ and histamine, respectively. This work provided a highly effective tool for selective detecting histamine and Fe 3+ as well as tendered a novel strategy for functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs in food analysis.

One-pot synthesis of environmentally-friendly carbon quantum dots for “on-off” rapid fluorescent sensing of folic acid, Fe3+, and Ca2+

Qi Zhao,Hui-Hui Mao,Mingyue Xue,Xiao-Zhen Feng,Guo-Cheng Han,Zhencheng Chen,Heinz-Bernhard Kraatz

Detecting abnormal levels of folic acid (FA), Fe 3+ , and Ca 2+ in the human body is crucial due to their association with various diseases. Orange peel carbon quantum dots (OP-CQDs) with blue fluorescence (λ ex  = 370 nm, λ em  = 440 nm) were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method when waste biomass orange peel was utilized as the carbon source. An “on-off” fluorescence sensor, referred to as OP-CQDs-FA-Fe 3+ /Ca 2+ , was developed for quantitative analysis of the drug FA, as well as the metal ions Fe 3+ and Ca 2+ . Additionally, the sensor was utilized for fluorescence imaging of HepG 2 liver cancer cells, demonstrating its exceptional biocompatibility. The concentration of FA displayed a linear relationship in the range of 5.00–90.00 μmol L −1 and 0.30–2.50 mmol L −1 , with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.15 μmol L −1 . The spiked recovery in folic acid tablets ranged from 95.70% to 104.50%. The addition of Fe 3+ or Ca 2+ leads to a reduction or restoration of the fluorescence intensity in the OP-CQDs-FA system, resulting in an “on-off” sensor mode. The spiked recoveries in human serum samples were 100.15%–100.48% for Fe 3+ and 98.05%–98.18% for Ca 2+ . This study highlights the considerable potential of OP-CQDs for ion detection, drug analysis, and cell imaging .

Dual Functional Si, N-Codoped Carbon Quantum Dots for Selective Fluorescence Sensing of Fe3+ and Visible-Light Photocatalysis of Organic Dyes

Yun Wang,Guo Fu,Chunxing Li,Qin Meng,Xiaoxi Hu

This work reports a simple, low cost and eco-friendly one-step hydrothermal method to obtain Si- and N-doped carbon quantum dots (Si-N-CQDs) using only citric acid and (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane. These codoped Si-N-CQDs demonstrated 0D spherical morphology and an average size of ∼ 2.54 nm as well as good solubility in water and high quantum yield equal to 14.3%. Fluorescence emission of these Si-N-CQDs was quenched selectively under the presence of Fe 3 + . Based on this property, we developed a very sensitive sensor capable of detecting Fe 3 + up to 400 μ M concentration with a 3.14 μ M detection limit. This sensor was used for Fe 3 + detection in real tap and lake water and demonstrated satisfactory recovery equal to 102.3–108.0% and 103.5–108.5%, respectively. Photocatalytic activity of our Si-N-CQDs was demonstrated using methylene blue (MB) organic dye. The degradation rate of MB under visible light irradiation increased 2.7 times under the presence of Si-N-CQDs within 60 min. Such excellent performance was attributed to very efficient light absorption of Si-N-CQDs as well as excellent electron transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers.

Efficient elimination of phenazone by an electro-assisted Fe3+-EDDS/PS process at neutral pH: Kinetics, mechanistic insights and toxicity evaluation

Yuqiong Gao,Han Ning,Yanyan Rao,Kexuan Li,Chaole Zeng,Naiyun Gao

The feasibility of the degradation of phenazone (PNZ), a common anti-inflammatory drug used for reducing pain and fever, in water at neutral pH by an electrochemically assisted Fe 3+ -ethylenediamine disuccinate-activated persulfate process (EC/Fe 3+ -EDDS/PS) was investigated. The efficient removal of PNZ at neutral pH condition was mainly attributed to the continuous activation of PS via electrochemically driven regenerated Fe 2+ from a Fe 3+ -EDDS complex at the cathode. The influence of several critical parameters, including current density, Fe 3+ concentration, EDDS to Fe 3+ molar ratio, and PS dosage, on PNZ degradation was evaluated and optimized. Both hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 ●– ) were considered major reactive species responsible for PNZ degradation. To understand the mechanistic model of action at the molecular level, the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of the reactions between PNZ with •OH and SO 4 ●– were theoretically calculated using a density functional theory (DFT) method. The results revealed that radical adduct formation (RAF) is the most favorable pathway for the •OH-driven oxidation of PNZ, while single electron transfer (SET) appears to be the dominant pathway for the reaction of SO 4 ●– with PNZ. In total, thirteen oxidation intermediates were identified, and hydroxylation, pyrazole ring opening, dephenylization, and demethylation were speculated to be the major degradation pathways. Furthermore, predicted toxicity to aquatic organisms indicated that PNZ degradation resulted in products that were less harmful. However, the developmental toxicity of PNZ and its intermediate products should be further investigated in the environment. The findings of this work demonstrate the viability of effectively removing organic contaminants in water at near-neutral pH by using EDDS chelation combined with electrochemistry in a Fe 3+ /persulfate system.

Competitive adsorption of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Ni2+ onto Fe3+-modified argillaceous limestone: Influence of pH, ionic strength and natural organic matters

Shuran He,Yongtao Li,Liping Weng,Jinjin Wang,Jinxian He,Yonglin Liu,Kun Zhang,Qihong Wu,Yulong Zhang,Zhen Zhang

In present study, the feasibility of applying a natural adsorbent with Fe 3+ modification (Fe 3+ -modified argillaceous limestone, FAL) on the competitive adsorption of heavy metals (i.e., Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ ) was evaluated. The current results revealed an efficient adsorption on Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ in mono-metal system. Further experiments demonstrated a high selectivity of Pb 2+ during the competitive adsorption of Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ . The adsorption selectivity of the metal ions followed the order of Pb ≫ Cd > Ni. In addition, both pH and ionic strength are important factors affecting the metal adsorptions. It is interestingly that various NOMs (i.e., humic acid (HA) and glycine (Gly)) exerted different effects on the adsorption behaviors, probably due to the different affinities for Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ and Ni 2+ and the redistribution of newly-formed metal-DOM complexes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis together with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis revealed that the metal adsorptions were mainly regulated via the synergistic mechanisms of ion exchange by Na + , Ca 2+ , and Al 3+ , precipitation to form CdCO 3 and Pb 2 (OH) 2 (CO 3 ) 2 , as well as complexes of FAL-OPb and FAL-ONi by hydroxyl groups on the surface of FAL. The application of FAL would be a promising option in leading to an efficient heavy metal removal.

A Novel Ratiometric Probe Based on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots and Rhodamine B Isothiocyanate for Detection of Fe3+ in Aqueous Solution

Lin Liu,Lu Chen,Jiangong Liang,Lingzhi Liu,Heyou Han

A ratiometric probe for determining ferric ions (Fe3+) was developed based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) and rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RhB), which was then applied to selective detection of Fe3+ in PB buffer solution, lake water, and tap water. In the sensing system, FePO4 particles deposit on the surface of CDs, resulting in larger particles and surface passivation. The fluorescence (FL) intensity and the light scattering (LS) intensity of CDs can be gradually enhanced with the addition of Fe3+, while the FL intensity of RhB remains constant. The ratiometric light intensity of CDs LS and RhB FL was quantitatively in response to Fe3+ concentrations in a dynamic range of 0.01–1.2 μM, with a detection limit as low as 6 nM. Other metal ions, such as Fe2+, Al3+, K+, Ca2+, and Co2+, had no significant interference on the determination of Fe3+. Compared with traditional probes based on single-signal probe for Fe3+ detection, this dual-signal-based ratiometric probe exhibits a more reliable and stable response on target concentration and is characterized by easy operation in a simple fluorescence spectrophotometer.

Investigation of the luminescence mechanism of multi-color nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots and their application in the detection of Fe3+

Yun Wang,Caimei Liang,Chunxing Li,Xiaoxi Hu

This study reports the successful preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with a quantum yield of 15 % utilizing the hydrothermal method . Citric acid was employed as the carbon source, while 1,3-Diamino-2-propanol was utilized as the dopant . It was discovered that the emission of synthesized N-CQDs was dependent on concentration and excitation. By altering the N-CQDs concentration, the fluorescence emission peak was shifted from 453 to 574 nm, causing the emission to transition from blue to orange. The presence of multiple fluorescence emission centers within N-CQDs was confirmed through two-dimensional fluorescence matrix scanning. As the concentration of N-CQDs increased, the distance between these centers decreased, ultimately leading to aggregation. The energy or electrons were transferred as a result of the surface functional groups' interaction, which ultimately causes the fluorescence emission peak to shift to the red. Furthermore, an increase in concentration results in the formation of larger aggregates and larger sp 2 carbon domains, ultimately resulting in longer wavelengths. Because of the convenience of use, high sensitivity, and rapid response of the fluorescent probe detection approach, multi-color N-CQDs with tunable concentration were used for the identification of Fe 3+ , with a 10–200 μM linear detection range and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.56 μM.

Interfacial adsorption for efficient removal of Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, and Sr2+ from wastewater using synthetic clinoptilolite via single-treatment approach

Tallat Munir,Jiawei Zhou,Ming Liu,Shiyang Bai,Jihong Sun

A highly effective synthetic clinoptilolite (SCP) was developed and assessed for its potential in the simultaneous removal of Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , Mn 2+ , Sr 2+ , and Fe 3+ from an aqueous solution. The present work explored the influences of SCP dosage, initial metal ion concentrations, temperature, contact time, and pH value on the adsorption performances of these metal ions. The results revealed exceptionally high adsorption capacities, reaching 2000, 1720, 1875, 1510, and 22 mg/g for Ni 2+ , Fe 3+ , Cd 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Sr 2+ , respectively. The specific surface area of SCP increased from 31.4 to 44.7 m 2 /g after five cycles. The adsorption mechanism and structure assessment were elucidated by XRD patterns and SEM images, showing that the Fe 3+ adsorption conformed to the Langmuir isotherm, while that of Mn 2+ , Cd 2+ , Sr 2+ , and Ni 2+ followed the Freundlich isotherm model with the adsorption kinetics best described by the pseudo-2nd-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters showed endothermic behavior for Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Sr 2+ , exothermic for Fe 3+ , and spontaneity for all metals except Sr 2+ . SCP retained over 90 % of its adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles, maintaining structural integrity under thermal, acidic, and recycling conditions. These findings highlight SCP’s robust characteristics, reusability, and potential for sustainable heavy metal removal from wastewater.
