With the increased need for clean water and decreased supply of fresh water, purification of contaminated water can provide clean water that supplements the fresh water from nature. Physical adsorption, photo-degradation and solar-driven evaporation processes are promising ways to generate clean water with minimum environmental impact. However, different purification process requires different dispersion state of the treating agent to maximize its performance. Herein, we demonstrate that Fe 3 O 4 -reduced graphene oxide (MrGO) particles with switchable dispersion can be used as the multifunctional water treating agents to efficiently purify contaminated water through different processes. Under homogenously dispersed nanofluid mode, the MrGO particles have large exposed surface areas and can efficiently remove organic dye pollutants through physical adsorption. The uniform dispersion state also favors high contact efficiency facilitating decontamination of high concentration of organic compounds through solar-driven photocatalytic degradation by the MrGO particles. The excellent magnetic response of MrGO particles not only allows for easy collection of the treating agent from water but also enables assembly of MrGO at the air-water interface with external magnets. Under such interfacial assembled mode, clean water can be distilled out of the contaminated solution with high evaporation efficiency of 74.7% under simulated natural solar radiation. This work demonstrates that dispersion state can be used as another important means to optimize water purification performances.

In this research, we demonstrate magnetically tunable transmittance for the magnetorheological elastomer films comprised of polydimethylsiloxane and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The films bearing anisotropic and isotropic microtexture were prepared with and without magnetic field, respectively. The usage of toluene as diluent during the film preparation process leads to the increased tunable range of the magnetically induced transparency in comparison with our previous results. For the anisotropic film containing 1 wt% Fe3O4 nanoparticles, an increase of 23.01% in film transparency was observed at the wavelength of 600 nm with a magnetic field of B = ~ 80 mT applied, which is 2.67 times greater than the maximum change achieved in our previous research. The variation in transparency caused by the external magnetic field has been tentatively assigned to magnetostrictive effect. And the film microtexture might have a great influence upon the way an external magnetic field alters film transmittance.

Microwave-induced catalytic degradation is considered amongst the most efficient techniques to remove antibiotic such as chlortetracycline from contaminated water. Described here is a new microwave-induced oxidation catalyst based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated uniformly with nanoparticles of Fe3O4. The combination of dielectric loss and magnetic loss of the material contributed to its stronger microwave absorption and the ability to produce more “hot spots”. These hot spots promoted the oxidation of common antibiotics such as chlortetracycline, tetracycline, and oxytetracycline under microwave irradiation. Experiments with the addition of scavenger showed that hydroxy radicals (•OH) together with superoxide radicals (•O2–) contributed to the antibiotics removal as well. The final degradation products included CO2 and NO3– as confirmed by mass spectroscopy and ion chromatography analyses. The results indicated that the Fe3O4/CNTs was an efficient catalyst for microwave-induced oxidation.

Excellent electrochemical stabilities and superior electrocatalytic activities of inexpensive counter electrodes (CEs) play an essential role in the large-scale practical application of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Herein, the spherical Fe 3 O 4 was selected as a CE and high power conversion efficiency ( PCE ) of 8.76% was achieved, which was more than Pt's efficiency (7.80%). Unfortunately, the efficiency decreased expeditiously (from 8.76% to 7.88%) in three consecutive measurements. Cyclic voltammetry ( CV ) tests also reveal that the Ox1 and Red1 peaks of the CE disappear after a few cycles, which could be attributed to the fact that pure Fe 3 O 4 was easily corroded in the electrolyte, and the catalytic activity was gradually lost after repeated tests. Here, a novel strategy is that Fe 3 O 4 spheres are encapsulated within the 3D reduced graphene (3DRGO) networks to enhance the stability of CV. Three consecutive photovoltaic measurements demonstrate that PCE of the cell with Fe 3 O 4 @3DRGO nanocomposites as CE has been enhanced and the cell shows surprising stabilization (PCE = 9.10%, 9.07% and 9.05% in the three consecutive tests, respectively). The specific surface area of the composite is increased after introducing 3DRGO, which is helpful for electrons transferring rapidly from external circuit to the system of redox to catalytically reduce triiodide, and also decreases charge-transfer resistance. This work not only achieves the outstanding photovoltaic performance and stabilization, but also offers a promising strategy in constructing 3D nanomaterials with novel structure for wide energy applications.

Although two dimensional (2D) materials have already been studied as promising microwave absorption materials due to fascinating layered structure, it is hard to achieve both thin coating and excellent absorbing capability. Herein, 2D hierarchical composites of nano-sized Fe 3 O 4 particles on MXenes (TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /Fe 3 O 4 ) with different [TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x ]/[Fe 3 O 4 ] ratios were synthesized by using a moderate chemical hydrothermal reaction. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope techniques indicated that the surfaces of MXenes were densely covered with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles of ∼4.9 nm in diameter and TiO 2 particles. By tuning the ratio of [TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x ]/[Fe 3 O 4 ], microwave absorption capabilities in terms of the maximum reflection loss ( R L ) value and absorber thickness could be readily optimized. Specifically, the sample TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /Fe 3 O 4 -5 exhibited a remarkable absorption performance, with a maximum reflectivity of −57.3 dB at 10.1 GHz and a band range below −10 dB to over 9.1–11.1 GHz at a thickness of 1.9 mm. Therefore, our 2D MXene composites are expected to be promising candidates as ultrathin and lightweight absorbing materials.

In this study, we designed and synthesized two novel fluorescent magnetic nanoparticles . Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NH-GSH-CdTe (FSGC) (GSH = glutathione) nanoparticles were synthesized using amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles and GSH-stabilized CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs), while flexible Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -NH-GSH-CdTe-NH-NH 2 (FSGCN) nanoparticles were synthesized using the FSGC precursor and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine. These two kinds of nanoprobes exhibited excellent magnetic and fluorescent properties. By comparing the fluorescence quenching effect of folic acid (FA) on FSGC and FSGCN, we found that the quenching effect of FA on FSGC was acute and the process was too fast to determine the FA content. However, the quenching effect of FA on flexible FSGCN was mild and hence it could be used as a nanoprobe to determine FA concentration. At physiological pH, the fluorescence quenching effect of FA on the FSGCN nanoprobes was fitted according to the Stern–Volmer equation with a linear response in the concentration range of 0.14 to 4.20 μg mL −1 with a detection limit of 15.1 × 10 −9 g mL −1 (S/N = 3) under optimized experimental conditions. The proposed flexible nanoprobe was successfully used to determine the content of FA in folic acid tablets. Recovery was found to be in the range of 92.7%–105.6% with a relative standard deviation of 1.12%–3.84%. Owing to their good stability, environment-friendly characteristics, high selectivity, and good optical properties and biocompatibility, these nanoprobes have potential for usage in practical applications.

Magnetic microspheres (MM) were prepared using calcium alginate (CA) encapsulated biochar (BC) and Fe3O4 as a high-performance green absorbent for Cu(II) removal from aqueous solution. The effects of the initial Cu(II) concentration, initial pH value of the Cu(II) solution and equilibrium contact time were investigated. The results revealed that the adsorption capacity of MM was approximately 3 times higher than that of the magnetic biochar (MBC). The adsorption of Cu(II) by the MM was in good agreement with pseudo-second-order kinetics. The overall orders for fitting the isotherm models are Langmuir > Freundlich for Cu(II). Mechanism studies showed that coordination and ion exchange were the major mechanism for Cu(II) removal by the MM. Moreover, the presence of the magnetic particles in the microspheres allowed easy separation of the material from aqueous solutions. This study provides an effective method for biochar modification.

Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated semimetal Bi nanocomposites were fabricated by a solvothermal method based on the nonpolar 1-octadecene. Bi and Fe ions were introduced into the oil phase by the complex with sodium oleate in the as-prepared solution. The nanocomposites were oil soluble and dispersed well in any nonpolar solution with the surface modification of oleic acid. It is argued that hydroxyl groups as the reductant induce the formation of Bi microspheres and prevent Fe3O4 NPs from oxidation. The frequency dependence of complex permittivity and permeability indicates that Bi and interface polarization of Bi/Fe3O4 nanocomposites are responsible for the dielectric resonances, and superparamagnetic Fe3O4 NPs weaken the natural resonance.

An active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate composed of graphene oxide (GO) wrapped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated-magnetic sphere Fe 3 O 4 (GO wrapped Fe 3 O 4 @Au hybrid) was prepared and used for aromatic dye detection. The hybrid was characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. This hybrid showed high activity for SERS detection of aromatic dye due to the synergistic interaction among GO nanosheet, AuNPs and Fe 3 O 4 sphere. The dosages of AuNPs and GO were optimized to achieve a high sensitivity. The unique GO wrapped Fe 3 O 4 @Au hybrid has several advantages (such as high adsorption to target dye molecules, low noise response and high SERS enhancement ability) as SERS substrate over previously reported Fe 3 O 4 and AuNPs co-decorated GO sheet. Finally, the hybrid was successfully used for SERS detection of aromatic dye pollutant malachite green (MG) and nile blue A (NBA) even at concentration down to 1 nM and 0.1 nM, respectively. Potential of this substrate for multiplex detection of dye mixture (MG and NBA), and practical detection of MG in real sample were also evaluated. Our results suggested that the hybrid of GO wrapped Fe 3 O 4 @Au can be used as an efficient SERS platform for aromatic dye detection.

Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) with Ag NPs evenly distributed on the surface are fabricated by using polydopamine (PDA) as the intermediate layer. Silanization and thiol chemistry are used to firmly combine the Fe 3 O 4 @ PDA core and outer surface Ag NPs. The spherical and hybrid nanoparticles are termed Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ag NPs, which possess a core–shell and hierarchical structure. After surface modification with 1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfluorodecanethiol, the hybrid Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ag NPs become highly hydrophobic. Slight rolling of a water droplet on the as-prepared NPs causes the formation of a “liquid marble”, which is capable of performing remote actuation on various solid surfaces, such as glass sheet, paper, plastic, textile, and ceramic, and at the liquid–air interface using a permanent magnet. Liquid marbles with self-assembled NPs on the liquid surface have potential to act as a miniaturized reactor for manipulation of inner liquid droplet with high positioning precision. In addition, the Fe 3 O 4 @PDA@Ag NPs are multifunctional and can be applied for oil/water separation and antibacterial purpose.

Large scaled uniform and size-controllable magnetic submicroparticles (MSPs) were synthesized via solvothermal method with ferric chloride as iron source and sodium acetate as trapping agent. The influence of Fe 3+ and NaAc contents on the size distribution of MSPs was investigated. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesized particles were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray power diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The well-dispersed MSPs with size of 100-1000 nm were obtained by simply adjusting the contents of Fe 3+ and NaAc. In addition, the hemolysis and cytotoxicity of Fe 3 O 4 MSPs, and their ability to case arrest in cell life-cycles were studied. The results indicate that larger size could lead to lower hemolysis. From MTT(3-(4,5-dimethylthuazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, the interactions between MSPs and adhesive mouse fibroblast cell line(L929) were probed. Larger size of Fe 3 O 4 MSPs demonstrates lower cell viability following an exposure to the cells.

We present a template-free synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 /SiOC(H) nanocomposites with in situ formed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with a size of about 50 nm embedded in a nanoporous SiOC(H) matrix obtained via a polymer-derived ceramic route. Firstly, a single-source precursor (SSP) was synthesized by the reaction of allylhydridopolycarbosilane (AHPCS) with Fe-acetylacetonate [Fe(acac) 3 ] at 140°C. The SSP was heat-treated at 170°C to generate Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals in the cross-linked polymeric matrix. Subsequently, the SSP was pyrolyzed at 600°C–700°C in argon atmosphere to yield porous Fe 3 O 4 /SiOC(H) nanocomposites with the high BET surface area up to 390 m 2 /g, a high micropore surface area of 301 m 2 /g, and a high micropore volume of 0.142 cm 3 /g. The Fe-free SiOC(H) ceramic matrix derived from original AHPCS is nonporous. The in situ formation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles embedded homogeneously within a nanoporous SiOC(H) matrix shows significantly enhanced catalytic degradation of xylene orange in aqueous solution with H 2 O 2 as oxidant as compared with pure commercial Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles.
