Adjusting photophysical properties of five daylight white-emitting copper (I) iodide hybrid complexes by modifying their ligands

Karima El Mir,Hao-Yu Zhu,Juan-Juan Shao,Yu-Wen Su,Paul Kwizera,Fang-Ming Wang,Li-Zhuang Chen

Five new copper iodide complexes ( 1–5 ) were prepared by the solvent evaporation method of cuprous iodide with derivatives of 2-(1 H -imidazol-1-yl) pyrimidine ( L 1 -L 5 ). All of them are daylight white emissions among 5079–6483 K and have good thermal stabilities. Their internal quantum yields (IQYs) range from 17% to 66%. By modifying the ligand's pyrimidine ring with different groups, they successfully adjust distances of Cu…Cu in Cu 2 I 2 rhomboid dimers and further influences their optical properties, which is confirmed by electronic structure calculations employing density functional theory (DFT). This research will be very helpful for understanding the structure-activity relationship of copper (I) iodide hybrid materials. And all these complexes can be used in solid-state lighting and other optoelectronic devices.

Graphitic Nitrogen-Regulated Direct I2/I− Conversion to Achieve Fast Kinetics and Stability for Zn–I2 Batteries

Yang-Yu Sun,Bao-Hong Xu,Yan-Xi Chen,Ya-Qi Wang,Jun-Jun Liu,Ming-Xiao Deng,Hai-Zhu Sun

Iodine (I 2 ) cathodes for aqueous Zn–I 2 batteries suffer from sluggish redox kinetics and severe polyiodide shuttling, resulting in poor utilization and cycling stability. Herein, graphitic nitrogen-enriched carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with a core–shell structure are integrated with a self-supporting porous carbon framework to construct a graphitic nitrogen-regulated porous carbon host. The porous framework provides abundant space for iodine accommodation and accessible pathways for mass transport, while CPDs introduce graphitic-N sites that strengthen iodine–host interactions and facilitate interfacial electron transfer. Their cooperative action favors a dominant direct I 2 /I − conversion pathway with substantially suppressed accumulation of soluble polyiodide species, thereby enabling fast iodine redox kinetics and excellent cycling stability. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized PCF-CPDs/I 2 -0.2 cathode delivers a high specific capacity of 146.1 mAh g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 with 99.6% capacity retention over 500 cycles. At 1 A g −1 , it maintains 117.5 mAh g −1 with 87.1% retention after 4000 cycles. This work demonstrates that coupling porous confinement with CPDs-mediated interfacial regulation provides an effective strategy for developing high-performance Zn–I 2 batteries. Graphical Graphitic-N-enriched carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) are integrated into a self-supporting porous carbon framework (PCF) to couple porous confinement with CPDs-mediated interfacial regulation. The resulting PCF-CPDs/I 2 -0.2 cathode substantially suppresses detectable accumulation of soluble polyiodide species, favors a predominantly direct I 2 /I − conversion pathway, facilitates interfacial charge transfer, improves iodine utilization, and enables long-term cycling stability in aqueous Zn–I 2 batteries.

A Type I Aggregation-Induced Emission Photosensitizer Enables Peroxide-Free Photodynamic Tooth Whitening While Preserving Enamel Integrity

Conventional hydrogen peroxide (HP) tooth whitening treatments frequently induce structural deterioration of enamel, necessitating the development of biocompatible and highly efficient alternatives. This in vitro study investigated the application of a novel functional biomaterial, the Type I aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer CPTQ, for peroxide-free photodynamic tooth whitening. Under white-light irradiation (25 mW/cm2), CPTQ (12.5 μM) demonstrated rapid degradation of representative chromogenic molecules (crystal violet, malachite green, and rhodamine B). Extracted human teeth stained with both model pigments and complex beverage mixtures (coffee, tea, and fruit juices) were allocated into four treatment groups: negative control (NC), CPTQ, 7.5% HP, and 30% HP (n= 6 per group). Colorimetric parameters (ΔE00, Δa*, Δb*, and ΔL*) and enamel-related endpoints—including surface morphology, roughness, mineral composition (Ca/P), and microhardness—were evaluated over 6 h and analyzed using one-way ANOVA. For pigment-stained teeth, the photodynamic whitening efficiency of CPTQ was comparable to that of 30% HP (ΔE00,p> 0.05) during the 6 h treatment period. At 1.5 h, the ΔE00value in the CPTQ group (23.35 ± 2.32) was significantly greater than those in the NC group (15.70 ± 1.78,p< 0.05) and the 7.5% HP group (15.02 ± 1.63,p< 0.05). For beverage-stained teeth, the whitening efficiency (ΔE00) of CPTQ was significantly greater than that of the control group at 1.5 h (6.22 ± 2.09 vs. 1.82 ± 0.56,p< 0.01) and was significantly greater than that of 7.5% HP at 4.5 h (10.94 ± 2.82 vs. 7.56 ± 1.78,p< 0.05). Crucially, unlike the change observed after 30% HP treatments, CPTQ treatment resulted in no statistically significant differences from NC in preserved enamel surface integrity, including morphology assessed by SEM, surface roughness (RaandSa, bothp> 0.05), mineral composition (Ca and P, bothp> 0.05), and microhardness (ΔHV,p> 0.05). Mechanistic investigations using reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers (TBA and DABCO) suggested that hydroxyl radicals generated via the Type I photodynamic pathway are the primary drivers of pigment degradation, reducing ΔE00from 12.56 to 1.09 upon •OH inhibition. CPTQ achieved measurable in vitro whitening through a predominantly Type I ROS-mediated mechanism while causing limited changes in the evaluated enamel surface endpoints.

Enhancing Hot-Electron Extraction via Naphthalene Tetracarboxylic Diimide-Based Molecule in n–i–p Perovskite Solar Cells

Zhengjie Xu,Xuan Lu,Jianing Wang,Qiang Lou,Jiazheng Wang,Xinxin Xu,Hao Zhang,Xinyan Dong,Liping Xu,Hong Meng,Yufeng Jin,Hang Zhou

Extraction and utilization of hot carriers are considered viable approaches to surpass the Shockley–Queisser limit of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we introduce N,N′-bis(4-trifluoromethoxybenzyl) naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid diimide (denoted as NDI-BOCF3) to modify the buried SnO2/perovskite interface, simultaneously accelerating hot-electron extraction and passivating interfacial defects. The NDI-BOCF3-modified SnO2 (denoted as SnO2–NDI-BOCF3) exhibits improved surface uniformity and optimized energy-level alignment and passivates oxygen vacancies (VO), thereby providing ∼22% enhancement in hot-electron extraction. Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations confirmed that NDI-BOCF3 enhances hot-electron extraction via higher-frequency lattice vibrations and more ordered nonadiabatic couplings at the interface. In addition, NDI-BOCF3 passivates multisite defects across various perovskite terminations. As a result, SnO2–NDI-BOCF3 devices achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.06%, compared to 23.96% for a device with pristine SnO2. An increase of PCE from 8.81 to 17.50% for SnO2-free devices is also achieved. Furthermore, due to passivation, the activation barrier for positively charged iodine vacancies (VI+) increases from 0.80 to 0.87 eV, resulting in an enhancement in the thermal and photostability of the perovskite thin films.

Colorimetric-chemiluminescent competitive lateral flow immunoassay for cardiac troponin I detection based on Au@CoO NPs nanozyme

Yingying Xu,Xiali Zhang,Shengwei Yang,Jiang Liu,Yan Li,Peng Li,Guanghui Zhang,Jiao Yang,Yingchun Li

Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI), a critical biomarker for diagnosing acute myocardial infarction (AMI), plays an essential role in clinical practice. While traditional lateral flow immunoassays (LFIA) are widely used for cTnI detection due to their simplicity and rapid results, they often suffer from limited quantification capability, low sensitivity, and compromised accuracy, limiting their broader clinical application. To overcome these issues, we developed a dual-signal LFIA (dLFIA) by incorporating Au@CoO nanoparticles (NPs) for quantitative and precise cTnI determination. The synthesized Au@CoO NPs present black color as colorimetric signals and its peroxidase-like activity was adopted to yield chemiluminescence (CL) signals. It is worth noting that sodium perborate was employed to replace hydrogen peroxide as the co-reactant for the aim of enhancing long-term stability and CL intensity. Such dual-signal strategy offers self-checking merit, significantly improving detection reliability. What is more, a portable assay device was designed for automatic release of the reagents involved, further simplifying the detection process. The dLFIA demonstrated a wide linear range with limits of detection of 0.39 ng/mL in colorimetric mode and 0.22 ng/mL in chemiluminescent mode, which are 8 and 15 times more sensitive than traditional LFIA, respectively. This dLFIA platform can act as a promising assay tool for point-of-care testing, particularly in AMI diagnosis and potentially in other applications.

Enhancing Buried Interfacial Toughness and Performance in n-i-p Perovskite Solar Cells via Dipolar Molecule Interlayer

Haocheng Huang,Qiang Lou,Hao Zhang,Xinxin Xu,Zhengjie Xu,Xuan Lu,Hang Zhou

With excellent thermal and chemical stability, tin dioxide (SnO2) has emerged as a promising electron transport layers (ETLs) for the high-efficiency n–i–p perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, for perovskite films deposited on SnO2, the surface hydroxyl groups of SnO2 and lattice mismatch lead to severe nonradiative charge recombination at the buried interface. Moreover, the inherent brittleness of perovskite renders the buried interface mechanically more vulnerable. In this work, a dipolar π-conjugated molecule, 3,5-diaminobenzotrifluoride (CF3-mDA), is employed as a buffer layer to modify the buried interface of PSCs with a relatively wide bandgap (1.60 eV). This buffer layer effectively coarsens the perovskite grains at the buried interface, increasing the grain size from 381.50 nm to 503.47 nm, and further enhances the mechanical toughness of the buried interface and mitigates the risk of interfacial fracture. Furthermore, it passivates the defects of both SnO2 and perovskite through its functional groups, as well as induces a more favorable energy band alignment. With this buried interface modification, the champion device delivers an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased from 18.74% to 21.93% (22.12% under reverse scan, RS, and 21.74% under forward scan, FS), with an average open-circuit voltage (VOC) boosted from 1.188 V to 1.232 V and a significantly suppressed hysteresis. The modified devices also show a higher environmental stability than the control counterparts, maintaining an average 85.20% of their initial PCE after 16 days of storage in ambient air (with 25% relative humidity, RH, and at room temperature, RT).

Tuning CO2 separation of Type I UiO-66 porous liquids by varying the size of porous hosts

Shuangshuang Long,Jingwen Wang,Shuqian Meng,Yaxin Liu,Jing Zhang,Zihao Ren,Jiadi Li,Yangyang Xin,Zheng Dong,Baolu Cui,Libing Qian,Wenwu Zhou,Kai Hu,Luyao Wang,Peipei Li,Yaping Zheng,Zhiyuan Yang,Dechao Wang

Porous liquids (PLs), combine the high adsorption capacity of porous solids with the fluidity of liquids, show great promise in selective CO 2 capture. However, current studies on Type I PLs lacks systematic investigations into the regulatory role of porous host particle size and its impact on in-depth analysis of the gas sorption-separation process. Herein, we successfully fabricated PLs by grafting polyether amine oligomer chains onto the surface of size-tailored UiO-66-OH as the porous host, which endow the PLs with good thermal stability, transparency, low viscosity, and promising CO 2 /N 2 separation. UiO-66-OH-PLs were fabricated by grafting polyether amine oligomer steric solvent onto UiO-66-OH via dehydrative condensation. The effect of porous host size on CO 2 separation behavior of UiO-66-OH-PLs and the selective sorption-separation mechanism were systematically investigated using sorption isotherm and kinetic models. UiO-66-OH-PLs exhibit markedly enhanced CO 2 sorption capacity relative to the pure steric solvent, confirming the preservation of accessible cavities in porous hosts. The PLs further exhibit distinct size-dependent physicochemical and sorption properties as decreasing the particle size of UiO-66-OH porous hosts increases oligomer grafting density, reduces bulk viscosity and enhances both CO 2 sorption capacity and CO 2 /N 2 separation selectivity. CO 2 adsorption isotherms are best fitted by the SS-Langmuir-Freundlich model, indicating that CO 2 sorption by UiO-66-OH-PLs is single-component sorption on heterogeneous surfaces, integrating Langmuir monolayer sorption and Freundlich non-ideal sorption characteristics. Kinetic analysis reveals that the optimal pseudo-first-order kinetic model, demonstrating that CO 2 sorption rate is dominated by the sorption-desorption process between adsorbate molecules and adsorbent surface-active sites, rather than intraparticle or liquid film diffusion. This work opens up a promising avenue for the rational design of high-performance PLs that can be tailored to meet the demands of practical industrial chemical separation processes.

Broad-temperature-range thermoresponse of Cu(I)-based organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides with multimode dynamic luminescence

He Jiaman,Kang Liwen,Zeng Weigang,Shi Wanxin,Ling Qidan,Lin Zhenghuan

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIMHs) based on Cu(I) ions show broad application prospects in the field of stimulus-responsive luminescent materials based on their rich structural diversity and highly adjustable electronic state. However, achieving sensitive and broad-temperature-range thermal responses for OIMHs remains a significant challenge, despite the growing interest in smart luminescence materials. In this study, 4-morpholinopiperidine (4-MP) and CuI are used to synthesize a zero-dimensional warm white-light emitting OIMH, namely MPC-W ((C 9 H 20 N 2 O) 4 (Cu 2 I 4 )(Cu 2 I 6 )(H 2 PO 2 ) 2 ), which features hybrid structures of [Cu 2 I 4 ] 2− and [Cu 2 I 6 ] 4− . Owing to the coexistence of three luminescent mechanisms-organic cluster luminescence (CL), self-trapped exciton (STE) emission of [Cu 2 I 6 ] 4− , and cluster-centered (CC) state luminescence of [Cu 2 I 4 ] 2− , MPC-W exhibits temperature and excitation wavelength-dependent dynamic luminescence. When the temperature is increased from 77 to 297 K, the luminescence color of MPC-W can be continuously tuned from blue to cyan, green, yellow-green, and white. In the range of 217–463 K, MPC-W displays an abnormal luminescence enhancement phenomenon with increasing temperature. Additionally, upon chemical stimulus, MPC-W can reversibly transform into a blue-light emitting crystal named MPC-B ((C 9 H 20 N 2 O)Cu 2 I 4 ), and a yellow-light emitting crystal named MPC-Y ((C 9 H 18 N 2 O) 7 Cu 8 I 8 ). These unique dynamic luminescent properties endow MPC-W with great application potential in temperature sensing, optical anti-counterfeiting, and password locks. The work provides a new insight for the development of novel wide temperature-responsive multifunctional intelligent luminescent materials. One-pot Synthesis and Optical Properties of Cu(I) and Sn(IV) Codoped CdS Quantum Dots (QDs)

Wang Luanjiao,Rao Pinhua,Yao Wei,Zhang Wenqi

CuSn-codoped CdS (CdS:CuSn) quantum dots (QDs) with different Cu(I) and Sn(IV) doping levels have been successfully synthesized by a simple one-pot procedure. It was found that the doping ratio of Cu(I) and Sn(IV) in CdS QDs significantly affected the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs), Stokes shifts, and emission window of as-prepared QDs. Compared to single Cu doping, CuSn codoping further significantly improved the PL QYs of as-prepared QDs (up to 24.6%). The CdS:CuSn QDs may be used as potential emitters in the PL industry.

Solubility Determination, Modeling, and Solvent Effect Analysis of Tanshinone I in Several Solvents at (278.15–323.15) K

Linlin Sun,Guodong Su,Zhenghui Li,Renjie Xu

The equilibrium mole fraction solubility of tanshinone I in acetone, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), methanol, ethanol, water, ethylene glycol (EG), n-propanol, isopropanol, and 1-butanol as well as methanol/ethanol/DMF/acetone + water was determined by the isothermal saturation method at 278.15–323.15 K under 101.2 kPa. The temperature and the composition of solvent mixtures play a decisive role in the solubility of tanshinone I. Then, four monosolvent models (Apelblat, van’t Hoff, λh, and NRTL) and three cosolvency models (Jouyban–Acree (J-A), van’t Hoff–Jouyban–Acree (V-J-A), and modified Apelblat–Jouyban–Acree (A-J-A)) were utilized to correlate the mole fraction of tanshinone I. The maximum deviation (relative average deviation (RAD) and root-mean-square deviation (RMSD)) between the experimental data and the solubility data calculated by the monosolvent models are 6.21% and 3.02 × 10–4, respectively. The maximum of RAD and RMSD for the mixture systems are 1.58% and 1.35 × 10–4, respectively. The Kamlet and Taft linear solvation energy relationship model was used to analyze the solvent effect, and the nonspecific dipolarity/polarizability interactions between the solute and solvent played a major promoting role. All in all, the experimental and computational data are able to provide basic data for the optimization and improvement of the recrystallization process of tanshinone I.

2,6-Pyridinedicarboxylic Acid Covalently Bound Polydopamine for Enhanced Tumor Photothermal Therapy in NIR-I and NIR-II

Xingxing Gao,Jingjing Li,Xiaoxu Li,Xing Yin,Shunze Cao,Ximing Pu,Juan Wang,Xiaoming Liao,Zhongbing Huang,Guangfu Yin

Polydopamine (PDA) possesses potential as a photothermal agent for tumor treatment owing to its photothermal capacity, chemical modifiability, excellent biocompatibility, and selective biodegradability. However, weak near-infrared (NIR) light absorption seriously hinders its actual utilization, especially in NIR-II. This study presents a novel molecularly modified PDA with remarkably increased NIR absorption and remarkably enhanced photothermal conversion capacity in both NIR-I and NIR-II. Dopamine monomers are covalently bound with elaborately selected 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) through an amidation reaction and then undergo an oxidative polymerization to form DPA-doped PDA nanoparticles (DPA-PDA NPs). By constructing donor–acceptor pairs and extending the conjugation length of molecular units, the energy band gap of DPA-PDA between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is diminished from 0.77 to 0.45 eV, facilitating the electron low-energy transition. Meanwhile, the content of carbon-centered free radicals is obviously raised via suppressing their dimerization and quenching by the conjugation effect and steric hindrance effect, where the strengthened electron spin and vibration may promote charge and energy transfers, increasing and accelerating the excited electron nonradiative decay. As a result, the DPA-PDA NPs exhibit the enhanced NIR light absorption (196 and 205% over PDA) and much higher photothermal conversion efficiency (1.4 and 2.1 times that of PDA) under 808 and 1064 nm irradiation, respectively, achieving more effective tumor cells inhibition in vitro and tumor ablation in vivo. Interestingly, photothermal therapies with DPA-PDA for tumor-bearing mice emerge with higher tumor elimination (nearly 100%) under 1064 nm irradiation than that under 808 nm irradiation (94.3%), without recurrence within 20 days, which is attributed to both the enhanced photothermal capacity of DPA-PDA and the stronger tissue penetration ability of NIR-II. This design provides a new option to enhance the photothermal capacity of polydopamine as an applicative photothermal agent for tumor therapy.

Senkyunolide I suppresses hepatic stellate cell activation and liver fibrosis by reprogramming VDR-dependent fatty acid metabolism

Zhu Mengyao,Ren Lu,Xiao Wenlong,Wang Longjian,Hu Zhiming,Wang Nani

Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation represents a central pathological mechanism in liver fibrosis, with emerging evidence implicating fatty acid metabolic reprogramming as a critical regulator of this process. Our study established the vitamin D receptor (VDR) as a key transcriptional coordinator of fatty acid metabolism during HSC activation. Genetic VDR deletion in mice exacerbated liver fibrosis progression, which was associated with elevated TGF-β1 levels and increased Smad3 phosphorylation. Mechanistically, VDR deficiency disrupted lipid homeostasis through the upregulation of lipogenic enzymes (fatty acid synthase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1, ATP citrate lyase) and desaturases (stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1, fatty acid desaturases 1/2) and the suppression of the β-oxidation gatekeeper carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A). Pathological VDR downregulation was observed in both TGF-β1-activated HSCs and fibrotic liver tissues, suggesting a disease-associated regulatory circuit. Calcitriol-mediated VDR activation reversed TGF-β1-induced Smad3 phosphorylation and normalized metabolic enzyme expression, effectively reducing lipid accumulation and collagen deposition. We further identified senkyunolide I as a novel natural VDR agonist that rebalances fatty acid metabolism by simultaneously downregulating lipogenesis/desaturation machinery and upregulating CPT1A. The complete abolition of anti-fibrotic effects of senkyunolide I following VDR knockdown confirmed its strict receptor dependency. These findings identify VDR as a master regulator of metabolic reprogramming in HSC activation and validate pharmacological VDR activation as a promising therapeutic strategy for liver fibrosis. The dual metabolic regulatory capacity of senkyunolide I through VDR signaling highlights its potential for targeted antifibrotic intervention.
